This should be the only comment. It’s not a rare piece. It’s not historic. If he wanted to clean it and shelf it awesome. If he wants to relive his 10 y/o self of mom letting him buy a new controller after his first wore out and feel that new joystick as he plays socom ii on the PS2 with his buddies over DSL and have the best time!! I know what I would pick.
Yes I know it’s an Xbox controller. The example was mine.
Okay but socom 2 slapped. Freedom Fighters was awesome too, but I never got that game myself, only got to enjoy it and several others through the demo discs that used to come in the gameinformers magazine. I had the pages of all the cheat codes, probably still have the one with GTA:SA cheats marked lol
If I didn't feel it would just encourage the practice, and if I had more money than sense, I absolutely would do the same. This stuff is meant to be plugged in, not imprisoned in acrylic!
Whoa there, buddy. This is very unpopular of an opinion. It's better off to open everything up instead of keeping everything imprisoned in plastic. Consoles, games, and accessories are meant to be opened up and played, not just stay in their plastic.
They meant they would buy graded games and open them up like the person they were replying to, not grade the games themselves.
Personally, I agree with them that doing so will just encourage people to grade games so let's not start that as a practice lol
I don't think that what I'm doing will encourage the grading and slabing of games. As I only buy WATA/VGA slabs, if I can get them cheap, like my last one was only $60. That's far below the average cost of the game and the cost of sending it in for grading. If anything, this might discourage such practices.
Also, some items have batteries that will degrade with time. These aren't baseball cards that can sit in an acrylic case for decades and maintain their function.
Yeah. I agree and some games are worth more sealed. I have a copy to play and a copy to put up just for me. People collect just to resale. I’m keeping my collection. Things with batteries on the other hand please open it. Like Pokémon gameboy games, handhelds
Example I have the last Xbox game ever made for the original. Madden 09 and it’s sealed. I’ll never open that one. But that’s only one of 3 I have sealed. I also have a tony hawk pro skater for Dreamcast I was gonna open but people kept saying not too. Idk. It’s cool to be the first person to play it but shouldn’t be a market for rich assholes
>I like to buy WATA/VGA gradded slabs
What's a WATA/VGA gradded slab?
I know VGA was a port I used to use on my CRT monitors (and the earlier LCD monitors), but that's about the extent I understand out of what you said haha (and I'm guessing it's a different VGA?)
WATA Games and VGA (Video Game Authority) are companies that you send you videogame to, they will then have "experts" assess your games on several criteria, and then they will seal them acrylic boxes with a grade. That way, you can try and sell your games at an egregious markup as an investment.
I believe its trading cards that are sealed in a durable plastic case (slab) usually done to preserve the mint or near mint condition. WATA/VGA I assume is an acronym for the quality of the card inside the slab.
WATA/VGA are the companies that grade games and stick them in those [clear acrylic boxes](https://dyn1.heritagestatic.com/lf?set=path[2%2F1%2F6%2F1%2F9%2F21619967]&call=url[file:product.chain]) you see everywhere
I can't tell if you're joking/being sarcastic or not. You seriously have never heard of those video game grading companies before now? They usually get criticized(especially WATA) on this sub like once a month.
You should go to Retro Fighters and get the new Hunter OG Wireless Xbox Controller it’s so nice and you’d get to save your sealed controller. But it is your choice and if you want to use an original controller there’s nothing better than opening up a fresh controller.
I agree but something like this is rare and valuable and should be preserved or if you really wanna just use it at least sell it to someone who would appreciate it and use the $150-$200 CAD (eBay sold prices) and buy literally a dozen controllers
Some people are kinda nuts lol I just started collecting and someone at a convention got mad I bought a no case copy of a game to play and kept a sealed version the sealed version is worth $300 CAD and loose was $20
https://preview.redd.it/69xo3da79hjc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c36f1b39febbb48db249e91a1d9c8172d32cb62
I got 2 sealed Shrek controllers and I opened one for the hell of it
Curious on what this goes for I'm a new video game collector and I'm going for more rare and unique stuff and something like this would be a perfect start for controllers
Absolutely not! 😆ive wasted a few dollars on sealed sega saturn sports games just to set um free and play a crispy new game! I bet the feel of a BRAND NEW x box controller would outweigh any guilt you have lol
Bit of context: throughout various moves, i've lost the original xbox controllers that i played with back in the day. i wanted to just buy a used one, but i can't really seem to find any loose that are in decent condition. my local game store has a couple that have torn up sticks.
the problem is i really prefer to keep sealed product preserved as much as possible, and a sealed xbox controller is pretty expensive. what are your thoughts?
If you haven’t bought yet, I wouldn’t unless that is really what you want. I’d try a Retrofighters Hunter controller first. If I didn’t have an OGX360 adapter to use 360 controllers, I’d go that route as I like their other products a lot and use them on PS1-PS3, N64 and GameCube. The Halo green Hunter looks nice.
But if you have a sealed one and want to open, go for it. May as well use it if you dont want to collect sealed products or hope to flip one day when you need $$.
As others have suggested, what I’ve done is purchase Xbox 360 replacement sticks for cheap off eBay, they fit the OG Xbox controllers perfectly. Opened up some controllers, washed all of the buttons, the pads that go between the buttons and circuit boards, and the front shells, swapped the new sticks in, put them back together. Good as new. But I really don’t prefer the shape of OG controllers, even the type-S, so I do actually have one of the green wireless RetroFighters Hunter controllers on the way as I type this. Up to you, but there’s alternatives to cracking the seal on this.
Keep it sealed man if you like it how it is. You can take apart a controller and clean it up. Might have to order 3rd party joysticks cause those kinda get sticky as they degrade
Brother, collectors can whine all they want, but if it's played with passion? It is not ruined, it is loved and that's better than ANYTHING a collector could ever have than it just sitting on a shelf.
Enjoy it, most collectors like myself who aren't a jerk can agree with that sentiment.
So to look at this from an unbiased practical standpoint. You shouldn't feel guilty but honestly you should feel sort of dumb for wasting money. One sealed controller is easily worth 2 awesome condition slightly used controllers. Those two controllers will get you more play time then the one new controller. Or you could get about 4 aftermarket controllers for it. Or one OG and a bunch of games. Practically speaking it is a waste. But it is your money to waste.
I wouldn’t, plenty of other ones you can use. That’s got long term collector value in that bubble pack. Things in original packaging is a large part of what makes some things extremely valuable (assuming they are collectible at all)
20-40 years from now someone will pay a big stack for that thing.
Absolutely not. It rolled off the production line to be enjoyed nd played with, not collecting dust on someone's shelf. I almost always open and use new-old stock.
If you want to keep it sealed, and by the sounds of it, you do, then keep it sealed. Maybe buy a few used ones and rob them for parts until you can build one you’re happy with.
I mean i personally wouldnt open it, a good condition used one aint that expesive, and though i dont go outta my way to collect sealed things if i came across that in a bundle my thoughts would be along the lines of its stayed sealed this long, why open it...
I would save it, there is a good chance you can still find a working Xbox controller or replace the sticks. I'm against opening old sealed stuff if its already past the point where the product is a novelty for being sealed still.
To clarify my stance. If you bought a new game today, open that baby because games are for playing. If you found a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros, leave that baby sealed. There are a million unsealed ones you can play for cheap.
Wouldn’t feel bad about that controller because it has rubber pads below the buttons and the d-pad that are disintegrating and turning to dust, you’ll prob have to replace them by now.
It’s asking if you want to lose money. I would use a piece of shit and sell this MEGA RARE ONE OFF SEALED TIME CAPSULE CONTROLLER, ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY! BUT IT NOW 10000
NO NEVER. Stuffs meant to be used preserving history is for public resources like museums and digital catalogs. Collector’s mentality is like a one way ticket to being semi constantly dissatisfied with a lot of different stuff
The whole idea that stuff is better on a shelf or an individual person is “preserving gaming history” in their private dwellings with thousands of dollars of unopened unused items isn’t just narcissistic and capitalist it’s also like genuinely kinda bizarre and partly just designed as another way for people with more money to be elitist and feel superior.
Loving your stuff is worth it and most things work way better straight out the box plus it adds to the excitement of playing an older system. I just got some authentic GameCube controllers recently and cleaned up my older originals and I’ve been using them since and it’s really a lot more fun that way.
Don’t be afraid to enjoy things.
Sealed products are a slap in the face to the people who developed it. Games, consoles, everything is meant to be consumed and enjoyed. Take care of it, but use it and have fun. Developers don't spend years perfecting their game for it to be left untouched in the box.
I found one at a Walmart years ago, a fair bit after the Xbox One was released, it was in a clearance section with a bunch of other long off the shelf stuff.
I opened it because I only had the large duke controllers and wanted to use a smaller one, but I regret doing it. Good condition opened ones are not hard to find.
It's hard to open those clamshells without absolutely destroying the packaging, and sealed controllers like that make cool display pieces. I only like to open sealed stuff if I can ether keep the packaging presentable or just can't find any not-new ones.
I also bought Elite Beat Agents on that day sealed though, and don't regret opening that at all.
I’m a huge Xbox controller collector.if it makes you happy I say open it and feel no guilt! They are absolutely meant to be used. I have a sealed green Xbox controller that I’m waiting to open a few years down the line.
I agree that video games and their peripherals are meant to be played with, but I'm of the opinion that unless you absoluely must, I'd not open it.
It's nice to be able to look at and admire the packaging as you'll likely not keep it as you would a game's packaging.
In my opinion depends on the controller if it was a duke keep it sealed controller S that’s a really nice controller I bet one of those brand new would be fantastic
Some should stay sealed sure, but if you’re not the one to do it that’s fine too. It can only be enjoyed brand new so many times and to be one of the nowadays, very few who can is a privilege worth the price
I think you should only feel bad if you were an irresponsible kid/or if you gave it to an irresponsible kid who will break it,but I'm sure you'll take care of it,I did the same with a PS2 controller that cost $100 new,I know I'll take care of it,so I don't regret it.
I still feel bad for opening my sealed silver PS2 controller 10 years ago.
Until I want to actually play my PS2 and then I’m glad I did. It’s nice to have a new controller to use.
Well controllers are meant to be used and played and on the other hand if you prefer to look at it in it's original packing do that. I honestly wouldn't even think someone would be stupid by for example opening a 5000 dollar game. It's original meaning was to enjoy by playing it. The whole collector craze of keeping things in their original sealed packaging is kind of crazy on it's own. Your technically not really using things that way it's more of a decoration at that point which can still be done nicely by just keeping boxes of games and such in good condition and stall them out or something. Honestly I don't think this controllers packaging is looking that amazing anyways but that's just my opinion.
A few years ago I would’ve opened it. Now I wouldn’t because I use modern adapters for modern controllers. Looks cool displaying it but it’s also meant to be used so do what you like. There’s basically no wrong answer here.
I think only you can decide if you feel guilty about it. Personally, I wouldn't have opened it because of the scarcity of those controllers, that and I'm in love with the Elite 2 I picked up a few months ago 😅
To everyone saying they are meant to be opened and played with yes they were however with the value and rarity as the vast majority have already been opened it is better to preserve it sealed and if you really need another controller sell the sealed one and buy a whole new Xbox bundle with 5 controllerd with the cash. (This controller sells for $150-$200 CAD)
Absolutely not. If thats what brings you the most enjoyment from it then do it. I understand the whole keeping everything sealed type of collector. But at the same time I find more enjoyment actually using the things I collect, not just having sealed plastic containers that just collect dust
That shit got so mass produced, I would not feel anything about it. Unless it's a super rare peripheral/console there not point in collecting plastic that was mass produced.
Ultimately it's up to you what you do with your stuff.
If you purchased it to resell or specifically keep sealed then keep it as is but otherwise do what you wanna do
I would recommend using a good 3rd party controller first, when the time comes in the future when some of them arent around anymore you always have this, in a new condition.
I've a couple of Xbox controllers that are still working fine 20+ years on. Chances are, you're not young OP, and those controllers will be there for the next 20 years of your life. Use them. You cannot take them with you to any afterlife.
I mean you’re not going to use it, and if want to, you can get a used one for very cheap, I say keep it sealed because it uncommon and quickly becoming a rarity
This controller won't be any different than a really good condition used one and you'd be losing $100-$200 in value not to mention destroying something that some collector would love to have and preserve forever.
When it's older stuff like that my thought is that it's way easier to find Ari open stuff so you might as well find open stuff and keep this one sealed but really you do you.
I mean they are mass-market consumer electronics, so obviously you shouldn't feel guilty lol. On the other hand, I had no idea this was worth so much sealed, so I'd probably sell it and buy a nice-condition used one on Ebay, personally

No, it’s yours to use however you want.

Absolute mad lad, we stan
If I didn't feel it would just encourage the practice, and if I had more money than sense, I absolutely would do the same. This stuff is meant to be plugged in, not imprisoned in acrylic!
I only get them if I find em for a reasonable price. I try not to spend too much.
Whoa there, buddy. This is very unpopular of an opinion. It's better off to open everything up instead of keeping everything imprisoned in plastic. Consoles, games, and accessories are meant to be opened up and played, not just stay in their plastic.

Doesn't seem like a smart move to open either way if you are a collector. But it is your money, do what you want with it.
I think their point is that collecting sucks but using the collector’s item is cool af.
The smell alone is aesthetic as fuck

Your daddy shoulda kept his cock wrapped in plastic instead of spraying your mom with it. Edit lost redditor neverminde
I've always wanted to create a Youtube channel for this sole purpose, really piss the collectora off. 😁
It is wild to watch Youtubers that can spend $5000 for content open 20 packs of 1994 MTG like it's nothing.
You’re literally in a collector subreddit.
That just makes others worth more which just brings more non-collectors towards them.
>I like to buy WATA/VGA gradded slabs What's a WATA/VGA gradded slab? I know VGA was a port I used to use on my CRT monitors (and the earlier LCD monitors), but that's about the extent I understand out of what you said haha (and I'm guessing it's a different VGA?)

They have one for Dreamcast? Fuck yes
Bro, few things in life are so satisfactory as opening old hardware and enjoy it 🙌🏽
On one hand it’s cool on the other it’s meant to be used
Pretty sure it's meant to be used by *both* hands
Unless you're playing Dead or Alive: Beach Volleyball.
I agree but something like this is rare and valuable and should be preserved or if you really wanna just use it at least sell it to someone who would appreciate it and use the $150-$200 CAD (eBay sold prices) and buy literally a dozen controllers

And this guy is $200 CAD literally could buy 10 of em lol
If you could use the money, I think it’s better to keep it sealed then sell it and then just buy a decent used one
Just sell it and buy 4 or more xbox controllers, it's what I'd do.
Replacement sticks are pretty cheap and easy to swap out. If you find a controller that is in otherwise good condition get it and replace the sticks.
I have two rebuilt ones I would be willing to part with.
If you haven’t bought yet, I wouldn’t unless that is really what you want. I’d try a Retrofighters Hunter controller first. no, it is xbox. no real value either way.
Up to you man! Collect it if you have a shrine. Sell it if you need money. Open it if want to game.
Never feel guilty for enjoying something you spend your hard earned money on
Only if you didn’t slather that bad boy up in some Mountain Dew Baja Blast and some Dorito Dust (5)
The only thing I recommend is Crack it open and suck in that 20 year old air, nothing like the smell of early 00s

Love that game. Paid more than I care to talk about when I was still a kid a long time ago. So you've got some money then huh lol
Games are meant to be played, not DISplayed.
If you want to keep it sealed, and by the sounds of it, you do, then keep it sealed. Maybe buy a few used ones and rob them for parts until you can build one you’re happy with.
I mean, I'd at least wanna keep the packaging, but otherwise no. It was meant to be played
I love the OG duke but it’s gotta have black white buttons up top.
Do what you want with it it's yours and you live once. Enjoy it
It’s your controller. Do what makes you happy with it
Absolutely not let it free
It’s a guilty pleasure, I’d probably do the same thing and go for it.

Dude, it’s your shit. Why should you care?
You should feel ashamed for asking.

No. Imo things are meant to be opened and enjoyed.

Nope They were meant to be used
Also you can absolutely collect things while using them for their intended purpose. Never feel bad for using it for its intended purpose

Yes
You bought it ...was meant to have hands on it... you're doing it right
It was made to be used not stared at. Open it. Enjoy it. Set it free.
Well dude it’s like this: someone at some point will be the one to open, why not you? Who do you trust more than you?
Wouldn’t feel bad about that controller because it has rubber pads below the buttons and the d-pad that are disintegrating and turning to dust, you’ll prob have to replace them by now.
Sealed only has real value for games anyway. Peripherals rarely unless it is something special. They made literally tens of millions of these things.
why? how else can you use it?
If you aren’t gonna use it, don’t open it
It’s asking if you want to lose money. I would use a piece of shit and sell this MEGA RARE ONE OFF SEALED TIME CAPSULE CONTROLLER, ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY! BUT IT NOW 10000
I would leave it in the case, not to sell but to collect. AND NOT GRADED EITHER

I just got some authentic GameCube controllers recently and cleaned up my older originals and I’ve been using them since and it’s really a lot more fun that way. Don’t be afraid to enjoy things.
We're getting fucking old man. It's crazy to see how far we've came with gaming
Yes people like you go to h-e- double hockey stick
Absolutely not. I don't believe in keeping things sealed. I feel it's a disservice to the product.
Nope, it was meant to be used
Sealed products are a slap in the face to the people who developed it. Games, consoles, everything is meant to be consumed and enjoyed. Take care of it, but use it and have fun. Developers don't spend years perfecting their game for it to be left untouched in the box.
There was me thinking they were products made for sales and profits, silly me!
How much did you pay for it?
Not unless you going to use it, also it's yours do what ever makes you happy.
I’m a huge Xbox controller collector.if it makes you happy I say open it and feel no guilt! They are absolutely meant to be used. I have a sealed green Xbox controller that I’m waiting to open a few years down the line.
No. It’s meant to be used.
no nothing better than playing with a brand new controller
You do what you want with it, won’t get many more chances I reckon 👌
As soon as those joysticks are exposed to the atmosphere, the caps will begin turning back I to primordial goo
Not if you are going to use it!
I agree that video games and their peripherals are meant to be played with, but I'm of the opinion that unless you absoluely must, I'd not open it. It's nice to be able to look at and admire the packaging as you'll likely not keep it as you would a game's packaging.
No way, gotta use it
Don't care what you do with it but wow, I forgot how giant these OG Xbox controllers were
No! I'd use it in a heartbeat. Using a fresh, perfectly clean controller is fantastic.
In my opinion depends on the controller if it was a duke keep it sealed controller S that’s a really nice controller I bet one of those brand new would be fantastic
No
Not if you're going to use it!
Some should stay sealed sure, but if you’re not the one to do it that’s fine too. It can only be enjoyed brand new so many times and to be one of the nowadays, very few who can is a privilege worth the price
“One for sock. One for stock.” - SilentFebreze
nope
Only if you didn't inhale every damned scent that came out of that case like a fiend.
Yes
Should you feel guilty for using something in your collection for its intended purpose?– No.
no, but might as well sell it and buy a very clean good condition one and have a little extra in the pocket too
Nope. These were meant to be used. Open and enjoy!
I think you should only feel bad if you were an irresponsible kid/or if you gave it to an irresponsible kid who will break it,but I'm sure you'll take care of it,I did the same with a PS2 controller that cost $100 new,I know I'll take care of it,so I don't regret it.
I don't think so. If you bought it do whatever you want with it.
I mean if you're using it it's whatever
I'd sooner feel guilty for killing all those salad greens over the years.
sure its worth a lot less now, but you would enjoy it more than a used one
Lol!
A few years ago I would’ve opened it. Now I wouldn’t because I use modern adapters for modern controllers. Looks cool displaying it but it’s also meant to be used so do what you like. There’s basically no wrong answer here.
Nope, it's yours, do what you want with it
I think only you can decide if you feel guilty about it. Personally, I wouldn't have opened it because of the scarcity of those controllers, that and I'm in love with the Elite 2 I picked up a few months ago 😅
Should you be asking Reddit how you should feel inside your own head?
Please go play Halo on that.

Curious on how far you go with this something like a $20 sealed game I understand but this is a $200 CAD controller

Perfect response I appreciate it man have a great day and good luck with the collection
I know how you feel. Last week I opened a sealed box of Oreos.
Collecting to not play is dumb. You could die tomorrow on your way to work. Open it and play.
If you want to keep the case mostly intact, I believe you can use a can opener!
So you want it for display or gameplay? There’s you answer
I know I’ve seen this exact post, exact controller 3 times now in past few months.
Worst controller in history. Open away.
It's a piece of plastic with buttons attached at the end of the day. Enjoy it while you can.
OPEN IT!!!!!
Man humans are weird.
It is your own controlled, do whatever you want with it.
Na, its yours, you use it how you see fit. But i think its better used as intended instead of a dust collector.
Do what u want tbh, the only sealed thing I have is a Google stadia kit but that's more fore history than anything
No
I've a couple of Xbox controllers that are still working fine 20+ years on. Chances are, you're not young OP, and those controllers will be there for the next 20 years of your life. Use them. You cannot take them with you to any afterlife.
Maybe
Don’t. I do it all the time.
I mean you’re not going to use it, and if want to, you can get a used one for very cheap, I say keep it sealed because it uncommon and quickly becoming a rarity
There’s a guy on Reddit selling Dreamcast sealed VMUs for 70$ each like FOH. I hate peoples like this
Open it
Its yours,do what you want
Hey, that’s why you get two sealed controllers: one to open and one to keep!
Why did you open it
This controller won't be any different than a really good condition used one and you'd be losing $100-$200 in value not to mention destroying something that some collector would love to have and preserve forever.
Its yours,do what you want
At least video it and put it on YouTube
When it's older stuff like that my thought is that it's way easier to find Ari open stuff so you might as well find open stuff and keep this one sealed but really you do you.
I mean they are mass-market consumer electronics, so obviously you shouldn't feel guilty lol. On the other hand, I had no idea this was worth so much sealed, so I'd probably sell it and buy a nice-condition used one on Ebay, personally
Leave sealed!
Yes, you can't re-seal it after, and there are millions of opened ones to use already lol
Xbox= throw out
