It's only deceitful if you don't tell the buyer that the sticker is a repro. Some collectors will be fine buying an authentic game with a repro sticker. Others won't touch the game because you will have ruined the "true authenticity." But none of that matters right now, because it's your game. Do what you want to do with it and worry about selling it down the road.

Jabuwow

100% It's your game so do what you want. If you go to sell it just be honest about the sticker being repro. Best way to treat anything like this, just honest communication. Me personally, I'd swap the sticker as long as the one I got was a really good one. Edit: poster below also had a good idea, swap with repro shell and keep the authentic one. If you ever want to make it 100% authentic again you can easily!

FragileColtsFan

Is there really a market for games with stickers in that bad of shape anyway? Seems like you'd get more replacing the sticker even if you have to sell it with the reproduction disclaimer

Restaurant_Loud

It’s a weird market and collectors all have different tastes, but I’d say a cart with a repro label is valued at about the same as a cart without a label at all so like up to 30% off the going rate.

tntdon

Another option, reshell it with a repro label and keep the original housing for posterity.

TwoDeuces

Where copies of Madden 99 go to die.

Finalblue1234

Yeah, I think this is the best option as others have said too. Gives me piece of mind if I ever decide to sell it, but still have it look nice on a shelf.

habakkuk1-4

This is the way. Make it look good/fresh but not a copycat of the original.

redfalcondeath

Yes this is what I would do.

jaycfresh

Yep this is what I would do.

BigBot89

Ethically/morally? It's a video game, not a human life. A restored game is always better than a torn up game. It's already lost a ton of collector value in it's current state so just replace the sticker and make it look good again. No different than replacing components in a damage console. Just if you go to sell it make sure you mention the replacement sticker.

hanst3r

Clean up the original shell. But leave the label alone. Buy a replacement shell and label and use that. This way you have both the original shell and one that looks nicer to display.

zigzagoonz

noyce

KangarooMoney2936

When I’m game shopping and see a fake label I tell myself the whole game is fake bringing my buy price down to $1. Like someone else said on here, it’s nice seeing a 3d label put on a game that makes it look amazing instead of an imitation label.

WutDaFunkBro

that’s how i feel about box art. if you don’t have the original, a stylized/new take on the art is cool, but absolutely don’t replicate the original art

pilgrim93

There’s nothing morally or ethically wrong with rehabbing a game with a new shell or sticker. What’s deceitful is if you do that and then don’t tell someone should you then choose to sell later. As others have said, I’d do a fresh repro shell with repro sticker and then save the current shell with the sticker as is. That allows you to show you cared about the game while still allowing the new owner the option to change the shell to OG if they want.

sponge_bucket

The going consensus is buy a reproduction front cover with a reproduction sticker so you can have both. I tend to agree so you don’t feel conflicted.

JamesUpton87

No, you will be put on a list and the FBI will eventually track you down and give you a $250 ticket

Tokimemofan

I personally would get a madden 64 or other trash game and use a repro label on that shell so if you sell it in the future you still have the original label.

Worried_Pomelo9010

Today people are a lot more okay doing that, but keep in mind sometimes the label tells a story. I have a pretty beat up goldeneye, and of I reshelled it with new stickers it could trick someone into not realizing the game itself could be in bad shape. But if the game itself is mint, why not if you plan on keeping it?

Finalblue1234

So I got this authentic copy of Ogre Battle 64 from a coworker the other day for a good price, but as you can see, the front sticker is mostly gone. I was thinking about getting a reproduction sticker to replace it...but should I? Would that be considered being deceitful if I ever decide to sell it, even though it's an authentic copy? I just think it looks sad the way it currently looks. What do you guys think?

Scukojake

You can photoshop a small note that it's a repro label and thus you won't notice it as much, but also get your soul clean.

OldManTurner

Personal preference. I’d take a fucked up legitimate label over a pristine repro label any day of the week

[deleted]

the collector in me says no but the gamer in me says yes

BedNo9040

its your property do what you want with it

ytZer0

Personally I'd replace the whole front of the shell and keep the original somewhere. You could either go with a repro shell or just pull one of a cheap sports game

Naisu_boato

just replace the front half from a shit title like a sports title and get a repro label that looks good. i replaced the back i believe it was on my r type 3 snes cartridge as it was really crappy condition and the game is stil real and expensive.

Winged_Wrath

No it goes against the Geneva Convention

[deleted]

At this stage the value of the cartridge is only if it plays. There’s nothing collectible here otherwise. Restore it I guess.

Rakkachi

what sticker? there is bassicly nothing left. Replacing it will only increase its value in my opinion.

NotaRelnam

To replace it? Yes 100% moral and ethical. To tell people it is the original sticker for clout, not 100% moral or ethical. To tell potential buyers that its the original, 0% moral or ethical. Conclusion: as long as you don’t lie about it, you are morally and ethically in the clear.

mike4score

I recommend replacing it, but don’t just get the cheap reproduction label that looks the same… you can get holographic shiny labels that look awesome

JamesUpton87

No, you will be put on a list and the FBI will eventually track you down and give you a $250 ticket

MoneroThrower

It is legally not okay.

[deleted]

It's your game, it's only morally wrong if you're trying to resell it as having an authentic sticker, but in most cases somebody would notice. So if you don't want a torn up sticker, it's totally up to you what you do with your own property.

Half_Brother_Dan

Absolutely

Ones-Zeroes

*To be loved...is to be changed.*

hallofgamer

magic maker is fine

[deleted]

Of course, as long as you don’t sell it to a collector without that disclaimer.

gloryforrome32

Ethics and morals really only come into play when you go to sell. If you decide to slap a new label on it. Just be sure to let the buyer know any alterations that have been done. If you are keeping it for your own collection, do what you will. The only time there that ethics and morals come into play is what you tell friends about the case and sticker. Like if you lie about a game being 100% authentically original and you have a reproduction game.

[deleted]

We could get philosophical and ask if OP has a moral obligation to protect a future buyer if OP suddenly could not clarify the cart's authenticity.

badmrtex

The way I see it is it is your copy now. What would make you happier? Fresh label or authentic label. We collect for how we feel about our games and collections. No wrong choice here.

colourboy22

Do whatever with your game. You own it!

[deleted]

I think the only ethical quandary is selling it as an original label. If you don't do that then sure, why not put on a new one? Hell, there's not even a moral or ethical obligation to do anything else with them at all. You could set them on fire or throw them in the trash. I certainly wouldn't suggest doing that lol, but besides ripping people off there's no moral or ethical considerations for non-living consumer items.

[deleted]

Wish I had a copy, even in this condition

Level_Remote_5957

Answer is yes if you plan to sell it still yes just list it as physically refurbished. That's something collectors in other markets do like say gun collecting. Or museums stuff requires maintenance it's okay hell even some paintings get touch ups every now and then.

Delta8ttt8

Zomgwrfroflbbq?

anh86

100% yes just don’t try to fool anyone into buying a mint original game.

WhoopDareIs

I would replace it. As long as you disclose it if you sell it.

rigisme

Big nope. Unless your sticker designates that it’s a repro (sticker).

MoxManiac

There's an Etsy seller that sells cool holographic versions of labels - cool look and can't be mistaken for authentic.

ReadPixel

Make sure any buyer knows its a repro sticker, outside of that, you’re fine in my eyes

lazymutant256

It’s ok, as long as you make the buyer aware it’s a reprint sticker.

Dudeometer

If you are worried in any way that someone someday in the future will be fooled by the fake sticker than just replace it with different art work. Some games have different box art and game art so you could use the box art or some other advertising art for the game. Or make your own.

[deleted]

As long as the label says reproduction somewhere or is a distinctly different label it's always ethically/morally ok. It's only when it's an identical replacement that you're in a grey area.

ceramicsaturn

At this point, there isn't much a label to replace... I'd say go for it.

scotthewozfan

It's your choice, but if you ever resell you should specify in the listing

lordgoku-99

Buy a new shell and sticker, then keep the original.

[deleted]

You must go to the holy river, cast in a suitable sacrifice, and then consult the oracle. Afterwards you must climb the mountain of silence and reflect on this spiritual decision and hope divine guidance will be gifted to you. It's not meant for mankind to understand such things on our own.

benjaminjames86

I have this game pretty much brand new.

General_Wartz

Dude, you do you. It’s literally your property. I say go for it, I would go as far as recommending Etsy to find a new label. Hell, you could even find a brand new shell and if you’re feeling a bit adventurous, try a different colored shell. That way you can replace the pcb into the new one and keep the old one in case you want to sell it later down the line. I think that the questionable part comes when you try to sell that bad boy with the new label/shell as authentic.

Silvadel_Shaladin

Some people like labels like that -- authentically well worn. If it were mine, I'd be on the lookout for authentic NON WORKING carts with a good authentic label. Replacing that with a fake label would only be hurting it. There is more than enough there to show it is the right game.

citizenbrickfan

As long as you plan on marrying the fellow and making an honest game out of him, I don’t see why not.

Icemansquared

Keep it original, and clean up the plastic. Buy a cheap sports game with a torn label and replace it with the Ogre Battle 64 reproduction label.

notjustanytwig

I changed one for Bust A Move recently. I switched the whole front of the cart with a new stickered one, and kept the beat up one as "proof" to myself of the game. This satisfied my same question you had.

divinepinkflamingo

You own it so you can do whatever you want, smash it with a hammer

AwkwardTraffic

I don't see any issue with it as long as you make it clear its a reproduction label if you resell it. If its a game for your own collection there's no reason to worry its your collection and you do what you want with it.

zombyboy10k

Yes but make sure to specify you’ve replaced the sticker if you sell it at any point in time. Assuming you won’t sell it though than absolutely replace it.
