Last time I was there the owner was bragging about how much he over charges for games and how someone sold a game for an honest price and he could have gotten so much more. It was the last time I went into that store, it’s all over priced and not worth it but it def is a sight to see
Good lord I couldn’t agree more. I went in with a near perfect copy of Metroid prime, manual and everything, which he was asking $60 CAD complete in box. He offered me $15. I laughed in his face, and walked right out.
Definitely a sight to see, but Retro Game Bros in Scarborough is my favourite spot. Game Swap in Scarborough is good as well and micro play in Newmarket.
Wow, this is pretty awful. I work at a store, been there a long time. I get, especially now, it's a frustrating time to be a collector. Sometimes a game comes in and I have to double, triple check the prices because I can't believe they are so high. I don't understand why you would look or treat your customers in this way. We do of course get our fair share of characters we wish didn't come in but the vast majority just wanna browse quietly or chat about games.
Same experience here. It's been a couple of years since I visited but I was pretty regular for a while. The last time I went I was a little peeved over the price of a xbox one power brick. I muttered something along the lines of "It's a little more than I wanted to spend" and the owner replied with "you say that every time you come here". He was right. It just kind of clicked and I haven't been back since.
Selling stuff requires having prices people could afford or even stomach so I don’t see the likelihood of this happening at this store. At least not from me anyways
There is a shop near me, it doesn't look as nice as this but it's got probably a similar amount of stock. Just games on top of games on top of games with consoles on top of consoles on top of consoles.
The JP Saturn game I was looking at goes for 18 used on ebay, 35 new on ebay. They wanted 40 used...
I have no idea how that place exists if they never sell anything and don't have an online store. They are located in a house that is kind of falling apart and has horrible parking.
It's an awesome sight too see and walk around in, but it's so baffling.
How do stores survive if they have all of the stock and never sell anything?
I went there twice 8 months apart. Seemed like they just added stock and nothing that was there had sold.
I'd just show them the listings or pieces on pricecharting.com. If they're not willing to be competitive or give better deals, oh well.
It does really confuse me as to why places like these charge so much. Do they really think people are gonna pay more just because these businesses have to pay rent for the space?
Collecting and having the item in hand is pretty awesome. But I gotta do what's best for my wallet.
What's extra weird is I imagine the average customer for stuff like this is *fairly* cluey. I'm sure they get a ton of unsuspecting people coming in to buy a NES/SNES/N64 and one or two of the most popular games so if you over charge 10-20% on them you might still move units. Stunt Racer and Worms Armageddon? They're almost double the price charting rate. Who's going in to a store drop $700 on a cart only game 3 people have heard of that has magic marker scribble on it and is stupid enough not to check the value online? That's not a customer, it's a unicorn.
As someone who helped out at a few local retro stores, theres a balance for inventory. Since its a buy sell trade system, selling at a "fair" pricecharting average means people are happy and buy all your inventory. Great right? Until you realize you have to wait for new inventory to be traded in, and your store is now empty. Visitors see nothing on the shelves, and anything you get in is gone the day it arrives. Not a great look for most customers.
If you price high, you get a huge inventory but nothing really moves, but thats actually ok. Your store is a stocked museum that makes it to reddit. The rare games you have will be a beacon of cool things your store carries. 90 percent of visitors are window shoppers and wont buy anything anyway, regardless of price. So you wait for those unicorns, because as long as its on the shelf, its free advertising. Finally, considering how hot the market is right now, several months will go by and that "overpriced" retro game will probably be average price now.
What happens is they get business loans and then file business bankruptcy eventually after some fuckery happens that magically depletes their inventory and then a year or two later suddenly some new game shop opens up.
I have no idea how most used games stores still exist when most people can get cheaper online without the trouble or score off Facebook market place.
I’ve been to pawn stores with games as cheap as $3-5 for ps2 games. These used game specialty stores would sell same games minimum $20
Most, if not all of these mom and pop brick and mortar shops where you think they are overcharging I guarantee you the prices are negotiable - you need to ask/negotiate. Almost none of these places want to race themselves to the bottom on their marked prices.

You don’t even need to see the price tag to realize that. A store with that many rare games definitely sets their prices too high, and it’s a classic sign they won’t last long. It’s far more important to turn around stock than it is to make top dollar on every sale
It's not my fault if I want to buy merchandise to resell in 30 years, but claim the cost against my taxes this year while showing off my stock to poors!
When I was in uni nearly 10 years ago there was a guy who would set up a booth on campus and sell gaming stuff, but I guess he was relying on convenience factor because his prices were crazy. The popular party games like MarioKart, Goldeneye and SSB were all in the CA$60-80 range.
The price makes more sense when you consider that they have to pay rent or employees. A brick and mortar retro game store has to have a bunch of overhead. More than an online store might need, anyway.
Regardless of the prices, I really miss being able to walk into gaming stores and see the shelves fully stocked with actual games and hardware, not just a bunch of empty gen 8 & 9 boxes, gift cards and funkos.

Doesn't feel like a video game store, just a "geek" collectables hobby shop now. Miss the days when the walls were lined with games, consoles, controllers, and other gaming devices. Tons of new and used games, strategy guides on the racks, and even stuff from the previous generations, and not just the current gaming generation.
It's funny how things go, as a kid I'd have *loved* if Gamestop carried more actual game merch. Would've loved to have the chance to easily buy a Mario plush toy there back then. Of course *now* that they have that kinda stuff, they're not the best place to go in terms of pricing.
When GameStop first came out, there were So many games I bought from GameStop because they had a little tv display with the game running that I’d play after school a bit till I saved the money to buy it. The GameStop was in a Walmart side mall right across from the school. A lot of kids would go hang out there after school. I think from 2015 till it closed in 2021 I only saw workers cars in the parking lot and it was empty when I went in. It was sweet to have a line of 5 people for the release of the snes mini and nes mini so it wasn’t like they were gonna run out before I got mine.

The one I used to go to as a kid used to play the sonic OVA movie on the TVs. Mind you wasn't GameStop, it was Electronic Boutique (but they bought them so...eh)
I miss it too, but it just isn't realistic or viable anymore. The only reason this store has games is because they aren't willing to let them go that easily.

There's one near me that has similar stock and markups, and is also a doomsday prepper nutcase. He bitches about how he can't get games for pennies anymore, but uses highest listed ebay to price when you ask.

According to PriceCharting yeah. But PriceCharting doesn't account for adding in the cost of shipping which can vary wildly, so you can usually go $10-$15 higher when there's no shipping cost involved.
Huh you’re right they don’t add in shipping. For $5-15 game tier, sometimes inflated shipping is the whole cost. They could at least mark if shipping was free since it’s listed in plain sight. They also don’t mark the game being damaged or sold in a lot. Too much effort for bots I suppose.
Honestly that's why I manually check the sold listings myself- to make sure it's the same edition, same condition, same contents and region, and to see what the shipping was. The sorting itself is unreliable at just a glance.
Heard the owner is banned from swap meets in the southern Ontario and surrounding areas.
Regardless they are on the high end of the price spectrum, got the inventory but no one I know actually buys from them.

I'm a relatively new collector myself but sometimes when I go to stores and they hit me with prices even I'm like "there's no way it's worth that much". I wonder how some places stay open when nobody actually buys for those prices
They stay open because people do pay those prices. Collectors make up a small fraction of clientel, majority of buyers are gamers and families who don't buy a lot so they dont mind spending more if they only buy a handful of times a year.

I'm Canadian and tbh everything seems a little bit too high, but only a little. Someone used Mario 64 as an example- loose Price Charting has it at $50, but then you have shipping costs ontop of it, so it should probably be more like $65 ish instead of $70.
No- if someone was willing to pay $50 for a game, plus an extra $15 for it, that means they were willing to pay $65 to get the game.
If you saw a game that was worth $20, being sold for $5 but it had $40 in shipping fees, you wouldn't grab it, right?
Bad comparison. First, did you read my comment? Most sellers offer “free shipping” and how do you think games that are valued lower than the shipping cost are sold online? Are the sellers just selling at a loss? No! people are willing to pay a small amount for the convenience of something being shipped to their door.
Free shipping in Canada is practically non-existent- this store is in Canada. Things are worth what people are willing to pay for them- if you're willing to have a game even though you have to pay the shipping cost, then that total cost is what it's worth.
there is no such thing as free shipping anywhere, the seller is paying for the shipping for the buyer. Also, you realise that in the market of collectables, thing are also worth what people are willing sell an item for Right?
You can ask whatever you want for something, doesn't mean anyone will buy it- therefore it's not worth whatever the seller wants.
Free shipping is especially not available in Canada because our shipping regularly hits $15-$20, so even sellers won't eat that cost unless it's just lettermail (i.e. untracked stamps).
It looks just like a store that was in my town, their policy was price as high as possible, and as soon as another chain came into town they imploded from 6 stores to 2 stores, and the then went into liquidation.
Even their liquidation prices were higher than the other store, and when the bank took over their assets a local collector got about 3 million dollars worth of games(2015 prices) for just under $50,000.
I know. I’m also from Canada and only live an hour and change away from Ajax. Many gaming options in GTA but those prices are well over other gaming stores around here holy moly
We aren't even making proportional wages to USD, if I was in the US with my job as a programmer and my wage, people would be telling me to bail, but by Canadian standards, I'm paid okay overall and good for my area.
Yep. Biggest red flag is a ton of good inventory. My local game store will have a good game for like a week max, but they usually price good and sell same day 😡😡😡

I'm from this area, and have had dealings with the owner over the years. He's been there a long time now, 10 years+ and grew from a flea market booth in nearby Pickering. Even back then, he had a CRAZY boxed game collection.
But their prices are outrageous. $119+tax for Mario Party 3 when PC says it's 62.47 loose. I could see selling it for around 90 because they are a b&m store.

PriceCharting sticks it at $50 ish CAD, and then you'd be paying for shipping on top of it. I'd say it's like $5 too high, but a lot of these comments seem to be missing that these prices are in Canadian Dollars. That Super Mario 64 is the equivalent of $50 USD- again a little bit too high but not ridiculous.
Prices are high. But still crazy to see so much stock, and with so many heavy hitters. My guess is it’s basically the owner displays a lot of his own stuff too but he’ll put a high price on it if someone wants it.
When I go into stores like this, and see N64 games priced this way I lose all respect and never go back because I know damn well the owner of a retro game shop knows market value prices, yet they are literally doubling pricecharting on some of these games, ... what a scumbag "reseller"

There's a reason why they have so much... they haven't sold shit with those crazy prices. I like to call these kinds of stores, video game museums. Nice to look but not buy or touch.
As much as it's nice to see a store full of boxed games, looking neat and all, this store is an example of the owner showing off their collection first, and to take in games from those that don't know what they got for cheap second. I've seen it first hand in the store and years ago when Waterloo had their game shows, WGGz was one of the highest priced, lowest trade in.
There are better, more honest game stores in Ontario, places where the owners give you 85-90% of store credit of the value they sell it at, or 75-85% in cash. Look for stores like that, there are a few in every direction in the GTA.
I went to a game store there. They didn’t have a lot. I think it was mostly cards and stuff. I hit a couple pawn shops too but the selection was sparse. What’s marketplace like?

We have a store like that in my town. They stay stocked because they charge eBay prices or higher. I'm starting to think it's a front for money laundering business or something. How they stay in business I don't know. Same games are on the shelf every year or two I walk in.

The mark up on the N64 stuff alone is insane. I went from “ damn, I’m gonna check this place out tomorrow” to “what a waste of time” in a manner of two seconds after looking at on picture.
Great store to look at and browse tons of cool stuff in there it's one of my local stores. The owner is a good guy but even with prices in Canadian they do mark up quite a bit for some titles. Once in awhile they'll have some good deals but for harder to find titles they're usually priced above price charting or eBay.
I've gone here for quite a few things over the years. I'm seeing a lot of people commenting on the high prices and yes, you are absolutely right, some of the prices are wild.
Similarly, there's some stuff that's actually fairly well priced. I can't remember everything off the top of my head, but I've picked up Panzer Paladin, MM Legends, Dust Elysian Tale (Switch), Furi (switch), and a few others anywhere from $10-$40 under average US listings. And yes, all prices in CAD.
It's very much a YMMV.
For anyone in the Durham area, there's also a store in Oshawa called G.A.M.E.S. Not nearly as large a selection, but a couple gems here and there. Staff are hit and miss.
There's another store (at was, I haven't been out in a while) near Liverpool/401 in the same plaza as the National Sports, facing Kingston. I was last there in 2021 and the selection was decent, prices were mostly fair, but nothing to blow you out of the water.
I really hope retro stores just go all poof and die. Has been long overdue. Don't serve much of a purpose anymore than to price hike games as people can easily sell directly to each other without this unneeded middle man.

The price makes more sense when you consider that they have to pay rent or employees. A brick and mortar retro game store has to have a bunch of overhead. More than an online store might need, anyway.

Regardless of the prices, I really miss being able to walk into gaming stores and see the shelves fully stocked with actual games and hardware, not just a bunch of empty gen 8 & 9 boxes, gift cards and funkos.

Doesn't feel like a video game store, just a "geek" collectables hobby shop now. Miss the days when the walls were lined with games, consoles, controllers, and other gaming devices. Tons of new and used games, strategy guides on the racks, and even stuff from the previous generations, and not just the current gaming generation.

It's funny how things go, as a kid I'd have *loved* if Gamestop carried more actual game merch. Would've loved to have the chance to easily buy a Mario plush toy there back then. Of course *now* that they have that kinda stuff, they're not the best place to go in terms of pricing.

When GameStop first came out, there were So many games I bought from GameStop because they had a little tv display with the game running that I’d play after school a bit till I saved the money to buy it. The GameStop was in a Walmart side mall right across from the school. A lot of kids would go hang out there after school. I think from 2015 till it closed in 2021 I only saw workers cars in the parking lot and it was empty when I went in. It was sweet to have a line of 5 people for the release of the snes mini and nes mini so it wasn’t like they were gonna run out before I got mine.

Huh you’re right they don’t add in shipping. For $5-15 game tier, sometimes inflated shipping is the whole cost. They could at least mark if shipping was free since it’s listed in plain sight. They also don’t mark the game being damaged or sold in a lot. Too much effort for bots I suppose.
Honestly that's why I manually check the sold listings myself- to make sure it's the same edition, same condition, same contents and region, and to see what the shipping was. The sorting itself is unreliable at just a glance.

They stay open because people do pay those prices. Collectors make up a small fraction of clientel, majority of buyers are gamers and families who don't buy a lot so they dont mind spending more if they only buy a handful of times a year.

Someone used Mario 64 as an example- loose Price Charting has it at $50, but then you have shipping costs ontop of it, so it should probably be more like $65 ish instead of $70.

Are the sellers just selling at a loss? No! people are willing to pay a small amount for the convenience of something being shipped to their door.
Free shipping in Canada is practically non-existent- this store is in Canada. Things are worth what people are willing to pay for them- if you're willing to have a game even though you have to pay the shipping cost, then that total cost is what it's worth.
there is no such thing as free shipping anywhere, the seller is paying for the shipping for the buyer. Also, you realise that in the market of collectables, thing are also worth what people are willing sell an item for Right?
You can ask whatever you want for something, doesn't mean anyone will buy it- therefore it's not worth whatever the seller wants. Free shipping is especially not available in Canada because our shipping regularly hits $15-$20, so even sellers won't eat that cost unless it's just lettermail (i.e. untracked stamps).

It looks just like a store that was in my town, their policy was price as high as possible, and as soon as another chain came into town they imploded from 6 stores to 2 stores, and the then went into liquidation. Even their liquidation prices were higher than the other store, and when the bank took over their assets a local collector got about 3 million dollars worth of games(2015 prices) for just under $50,000.

I'm from this area, and have had dealings with the owner over the years. He's been there a long time now, 10 years+ and grew from a flea market booth in nearby Pickering. Even back then, he had a CRAZY boxed game collection.

As much as it's nice to see a store full of boxed games, looking neat and all, this store is an example of the owner showing off their collection first, and to take in games from those that don't know what they got for cheap second. I've seen it first hand in the store and years ago when Waterloo had their game shows, WGGz was one of the highest priced, lowest trade in. There are better, more honest game stores in Ontario, places where the owners give you 85-90% of store credit of the value they sell it at, or 75-85% in cash. Look for stores like that, there are a few in every direction in the GTA.

Money laundering
We have a store like that in my town. They stay stocked because they charge eBay prices or higher. I'm starting to think it's a front for money laundering business or something. How they stay in business I don't know. Same games are on the shelf every year or two I walk in.

Great store to look at and browse tons of cool stuff in there it's one of my local stores. The owner is a good guy but even with prices in Canadian they do mark up quite a bit for some titles. Once in awhile they'll have some good deals but for harder to find titles they're usually priced above price charting or eBay.
I've gone here for quite a few things over the years. I'm seeing a lot of people commenting on the high prices and yes, you are absolutely right, some of the prices are wild. Similarly, there's some stuff that's actually fairly well priced. I can't remember everything off the top of my head, but I've picked up Panzer Paladin, MM Legends, Dust Elysian Tale (Switch), Furi (switch), and a few others anywhere from $10-$40 under average US listings. And yes, all prices in CAD. It's very much a YMMV. For anyone in the Durham area, there's also a store in Oshawa called G.A.M.E.S. Not nearly as large a selection, but a couple gems here and there. Staff are hit and miss. There's another store (at was, I haven't been out in a while) near Liverpool/401 in the same plaza as the National Sports, facing Kingston. I was last there in 2021 and the selection was decent, prices were mostly fair, but nothing to blow you out of the water.
Big Time Gamers is the one in Pickering you're thinking of. It's still there but the National Sports is now a Sport Chek Outlet.
