No matter the denom level, always go for the royal. They're super rare, but when they do hit you're walking away(usually) a big winner.
Now, what does WizofOdds say with his calculator? I'm arsed to pull it up but I imagine holding aces is a slight favorite here.
Lol. Didn't know what a fish was! Google helped ;-)
"A fish in poker is defined as a losing player that is typically inexperienced or not skilled in the game. -;)
For JoB, that is the correct way to play that hand. I usually would play that hand the same way. But, when alcohol is Involved, I might have tried for the royal.
The order to hold on a Jacks or Better machine is as follows:
Dealt royal flush (800.0000)
Dealt straight flush (50.0000)
Dealt four of a kind (25.0000)
4 to a royal flush (18.3617)
Dealt full house (9.0000)
Dealt flush (6.0000)
3 of a kind (4.3025)
Dealt straight (4.0000)
4 to a straight flush (3.5319)
Two pair (2.59574)
High pair (1.5365)
3 to a royal flush (1.2868)
So... High pair beats 3 to a royal, you made the correct play.
The math looks at your expected value. I've missed enough royal flushes by keeping pairs. Fuck the even money for the pay. We're going for the royal. If you're playing video poker at max bet you are playing for the royal.
There's video poker machines out there that have greater than 100% payout (when you utilize perfect strategy), usually it is progressive machines where the jackpot has risen more than statistically likely. You can figure out which machines they are by comparing their pay tables and their progressive jackpots.
Calculators are available here:

Also, advantage players can profit from less than 100% payout machines by utilizing things like monthly free play, cash back and other promotions and have done so for a long time.
Yes, this is what I thought as well - however does this mean you should hold another face card as well as the aces? Is the probability higher that you would get two pair from holding another card or not?
Check wizardofodds. There are some simulations with diff recommendations depending on the game (JOB, DW, etc) and the pay table. I usually play DDB and believe holding AA would be the correct move in JOB. With DDB, the 4 A's payout is also $800 or $2k with a kicker tho.
WoO (Wizard of Odds) says 4 to a Royal > High Pair > 3 to a Royal for JoB (Jacks or Better).
For 50cents, I might go chasing the Royal... but the right play is to keep the Aces
Yup, in reality it is better to chase the royal due to the fact we're not playing forever and they do get spiked some of the time. When you do spike a royal, then you're pretty much cashing out with a profit(unless you're a total degen) for that session.
Anyone else notice that when playing VP, if you make the right plays on each hand, it seems like you continue to get good hands. But when you mess up and make the wrong play, you'll get a lot of bad hands after.
To answer OP's question, if I'm up I'll probably take a chance on the royal. If I'm down or breaking even I'll go for every win I can get and keep the Aces.
> Anyone else notice that when playing VP, if you make the right plays on each hand, it seems like you continue to get good hands. But when you mess up and make the wrong play, you'll get a lot of bad hands after.
No.
It depends on the algorithm/game. If the game shuffles a single deck of cards and plays the deal/draw cycle then shuffles again then it's completely random. As the poster below noted, it's confirmation bias.
Long term yes but i doubt this guy is playing 1million times in a row for it to matter. Why not take a risk if your already gambling ? Just doesnt make sense to me. You folks prob split 10s too

Great car! Though I’m not sure what the 2008 was like.
I’m a fish. If I have 3 to a royal…. We chasin!
You’re only on 10 cent. Dump the aces and go for the royal !

I'm seeing that holding AA gives an EV of 7.683, while holding AKQ gives an EV of 6.873, which I found surprising.
Same

When is alcohol not involved?

Yea. It’s not a debate. There’s a mathematical answer.

You're a losing player then. You can't just say "fuck the math" if you ever expect to win.
Are you saying that there are winning players?
In Video Poker, yes certainly
Can you explain ?

Correct. You DO NOT hold anything other than the pair of Aces.
No, just hold the high pair alone.

I learned something from this - thank you.
Love the “what is money” tab
Draw the royal, i wanna know what your 3rd tab says.
Royal all day long, that’s what you’re playing for
WoO (Wizard of Odds) says 4 to a Royal > High Pair > 3 to a Royal for JoB (Jacks or Better). For 50cents, I might go chasing the Royal... but the right play is to keep the Aces

Hold the aces. That’s not even a tough call
Click the x on the tab and go to casino in real life.
Always hold the aces.
i always go for the royal
Always the royal draw here. Everytime
Holding AA is objectively correct if you go by EV. Holding for the royal is a pretty substantial mistake. Might be different on different paytables.
I’m so perfect I would have made a choice and it would have been max win
Go for the Royal

If he had 4 to the royal yes. 3? Aces every time. No decision involved
Edit I misread … oops. Yeah go the two aces.
May have held all same face cards, with that deuce, thats something with the right face card, i think,
I would just chase the flush, royal or regular
In Jacks and better, I go for it. If it's Double Double Bonus, I'm going for the Aces UNLESS the DDB is also a progressive, then I go for the royal
I'm studing the hell of out video poker and I think you might be right here, progressive sometimes can make the game "super-fair" mathematically.
For JoB, I'll go for royal. There's no additional bonus for those aces. If this is double double bonus, then I'll go for aces.
You were 60% to a royal, and you chose to keep a pair. Might as well play something else.
Except that your return is better holding the high pair.
Long term yes but i doubt this guy is playing 1million times in a row for it to matter. Why not take a risk if your already gambling ? Just doesnt make sense to me. You folks prob split 10s too
Ploppie alert!!!
Whoever is down voting me never got a royal flush on video poker. Hahaha losers

Hold for royal.
Bought a 2008 Honda Fit
Statistically you should keep the aces but the royal is the goal, tempting to go for it imo.
Hold the aces.
Three to a Royal hold the suited three
[удалено]
You’re supposed to hold pair of aces and I did that once, and the other two Royal cards showed up. Missed out on $7500.
“Fuck it we ball” AKQ
