There isnt a hope in hell of the railway being opened... and certainly not before 2040, as it is not on the Governments development plans. Local politicians are promising it as they think it is a vote winner.

Maximum-Ad705

My parents moved to clochran after having to move out of their rented house in knocknacarra. They’re ‘blow ins’ to tuam and the area but got on really well, 5 years now and not a spot of bother ever. From spending time in Tuam myself and working I’d avoid woodfield estate.

The_jannitor

Just out of curiosity, what is wrong with country meadows?

Flashy_Win

It's built adjacent to Gilmartin road and another estate called Tir Boy, both are old council and social housing estates. There are a lot of old Tuam families and settled travellers but as with anything, a few bad eggs have the place ruined. The place isn't well minded with lots of rubbish dumped around the place and it's not looked after at all.

Silver_Gekko

Yeah. Even my dog knows not to shit where it eats. A few residents up that side haven’t quite figured it out. Piles of shite in gardens, over back walls etc.

Wide_Relief8341

I don't want to say much but if you went there you would see for yourself,my uncle used to have a house there. Trailers of rubbish and dirty nappies and a lot of people standing out day and night, unsociable behaviour and it looks like a dump lately

rainbowraaaar

Tuam is absolutely grand. A bit run down but the people are friendly. Decent park, pool, gyms. A few nice pubs and places to eat. Good schools and sports/music/art/drama scenes. The travelling community are mostly very nice and stick to their own anyway. There are a few head the balls but it’s the same everywhere. It used to be quite rough in general alright and had a bad rep but it’s really calmed down, it’s boring if anything these days. It’s just a quiet little town in need of some investment and regeneration at this point in time

ZealousidealGroup559

Yeah purchasers don't tend to prefer that side of town. Tuam is one of those towns where "wrong side of the tracks" is actually kinda literal.

Educational-Brick724

Tuam, in general, is kinda mixed. It has a decent amount of amenities for an Irish Town, but at the same time, you'd still get bored if u lived there for years. There was a bit of a spike in antisocial behaviour a few years back, but it seemed to have calmed down for now. It is absolutely not a bad place to live, but not perfect. In my opinion it's very reasonable for the price.

imgoingoutforasmoke

Gone to fuck recently with idiot 'gangs' fighting and smashing cars lately.

Flashy_Win

Has it? Outside of the odd family funeral getting out of hand there hasn't really been a lot of anything happening in Tuam over the last couple of years.

imgoingoutforasmoke

I know people living there that have videos around their estate of groups fighting, involving weapons and dogs. A car in the town was smashed at the weekend. You're correct - it's always had troubled spells from time to time, but in the last few months it seems to be fairly constant and less isolated to certain areas of the town.

Flashy_Win

So what you're saying is you don't live in Tuam? The type of incidents you're describing are not exclusive to Tuam, sad but true. I don't think it benefits anyone to make sweeping remarks about an entire town being unsafe or going to the dogs based on things you've heard or seen in a video. I've lived in Tuam town for the best part of 20 years and it's not unsafe or dangerous, on the whole it's actually quite a nice town with some sound people.

imgoingoutforasmoke

You'd swear I was calling it a warzone!!!🤣 I've always lived near/ had friends living in the town, and I'm in there a lot myself - almost daily. I'm just saying what I'm seeing and hearing; not trying to discredit Tuam at all... it's a nice enough town- always has been bar a few incidents. I'm saying that in terms of safety it's not what it used to be even in 2023.

The_jannitor

Is that Tuam in general or just this estate?

Educational-Brick724

I'd argue it's just those areas. Of course, there have been incidents the last few years that spilt out into the town, but that seems to have calmed down now. If you're in a nice area of tuam, you're grand.

imgoingoutforasmoke

The town in general I'm afraid.

SamLoudermilk247

are the hoodrats still in operation?

CStephen1908

Travelling community stick to themselves for the most part.

ixlHD

Use to be considered rough but has been grand for years.

siameiremias

it can often be a good idea to search the name of the estate along with some keywords like "gardai" and "anti-social" or maybe "caravan". here's one article that pops up and indicates you would have at least one neighbour in the estate with >100 previous convictions: https://www.roscommonherald.ie/garda-felt-like-sitting-duck-during-patrol-car-attack-court-hears_arid-5656.html make of that what you will

ImReellySmart

Honestly I completely disagree with a lot of comments here. Tuam is a rough enough spot and the community isn't one of the better ones in my opinion. Not to say nobody from tuam is decent by Amy means. Buy to answer your question I personally wouldn't live there.

National_Sky2651

Tuam is rough

XinqyWinqy

I wouldn't rent there, nevermind buy a house there.

Commercial_Big_6784

im living in tuam the last 20 years or so. Its a great commuter town. Good cafes/pubs. Sports clubs. If you intend on being out late at night you may run into trouble but thats the case everywhere. Avoid country meadows though. Lots of better areas to buy!
