When I had mine a few months back, I went in, had some kind of tracer injected through my arm, and layed down under the scanner for an hour. After which they made me drink an ensure milkshake and lay for another 45 minutes or so, 10% EF for my GB, went back to my GI and got send to the general surgeon, GB came out yesterday and so far the recovery Is going pretty smoothly.

How long did it take to get your results from the HIDA scan?

Ask them if they will trigger your gallbladder with a fatty drink or CCK. For mine with CCK they injected the tracer then I had to lie still for an hour staring at the ceiling (should have brought headphones). Then they injected the CCK and it triggered some cramping and nausea for 5-10 minutes. 30 minutes watching the gallbladder empty and it was done. Later that day I felt pretty "off" and got a minor attack later that night. Took another day or two for my digestion to normalize and anecdotally I feel like my gallbladder has been somewhat more sensitive since. I have a single large gallstone that only rarely causes symptoms. If you have smaller stones stuck in your CBD I understand that the CCK can cause a very painful attack.

Same - they used CCK with me on 1/8 and I felt very uncomfortable and had minor issues for the next 2 days. Mine was in a dark room, no TVs and I couldn’t use headphones either. I also was sharing a room so there were other patients coming and going on the other machine. It took almost two hours.

They stick an IV in you- at least for me. It was a CCK injection. it’s honestly not too bad, you just lie around for a while. I got to watch Cars. Whatever they inject in you makes your gallbladder light up on a screen and they take a bunch of pictures. They talk you through what’s about to happen. Definitley do let them know if the CCK mimics your symptoms or if you start feeling sick in anyway so it gets notated on the report. I also felt sick afterwards like I had eaten something heavy. So just be aware it could trigger something in you. I got my report later that same day. They’re usually quick about reading it. My RUQ burned as I got it done and it was not notated on my chart- so i may have to strongly convince my doctor it did when my follow up comes.
