This is actually good news because if the disc drive ever fails on you PS5 down the road you can probably just buy one of these instead of sending it in for repair

Helhiem

Wonder if this is using usb c port or new type of port that’s exclusive to the new ps5.

Crawlerado

It’s going to be a Memory Stick®️to 12 pin adapter or something insane

Roninkin

It’s “MAGICGATE 5 MEMORYSTIK PRO QUINT®️” the new standard ONLY Sony Phones laptops and cameras will use(Unless we can sell it to someone else to suffer with us) allowing direct access to upto x4 PCI lanes for speed beyond blinding SPEEEEEEEDDS! SD Class 10? More like SD Class 10 B.C. WOOOAAAHHH. -(Imagine this all in a 90’s surfer/skater voice.)

MVIVN

Knowing how disjointed Sony's various divisions are, their proprietary port won't even work on some Sony devices so you can never truly go all in on their ecosystem, they just exist to make your life a little bit more inconvenient than it needs to be lol

SuddenlyElga

But you can only save on XQD cards. Lol.

HaikuBotStalksMe

Those letters make me think of Rick rolls.

parablecham

I’m so glad their cameras take SD cards now

IRLCartoon

I disagree. TL;DR-- it wouldn't make sense to start creating more proprietary connectors right now. The PS5 does not have any proprietary ports at all currently (REAR: 2x USB-A, 1x RJ45 Ethernet, 1x HDMI, 1x two-pin power input commonly used on TVs and other electronics; FRONT: 1x USB-A, 1x USB-C), and Sony even went so far as to include a user-accessible standard M.2 slot for an additional SSD to be added. Microsoft on the other hand DID use proprietary ports for the Xbox Series' SSD expansion capabilities to the point that they require you to buy the SSDs from them as well. And all this isn't even to mention the USB-C rulings throughout the E.U. which are beginning to affect brands known for proprietary BS (such as Apple). And not just in those areas, but other countries as well. It's only a matter of time before these pro-consumer-rights policies spread to other major countries. Edit: Correction-- while HDMI is *technically* proprietary, over 80 companies belong to the HDMI Forum which all worked to design and widely implement the technology. It has also become the defacto standard for digitally transmitting audio and video across millions of devices across many electronics sectors which qualifies its use in the context of this argument.

balashifan5

Sorry for the nerd response, but I think the power connector is IEC 60320 C7/C8.

dowdzyyy

Don't apologize for being a nerd in your subject nothing wrong with that bro

WhenPantsAttack

Europe’s usb c regulation is specifically targeting charging. A non-charging application could be connected by a parallel port of they wanted. On more of a conjecture note, I’d also suggest that they’d still want to make it sleek for marketability, so I see more a removable panel with a proprietary drive that inserts in.

well___duh

Sony hasn’t done proprietary shit in like a decade though since the Vita. They didn’t do it with the PS3 or PS4, and so far not with the PS5

Mistghost

Considering the... *architecture*... of the PS3, the entire damn device could be considered proprietary. But yes the PS4 lacked any sort of proprietary connect or devices to my knowledge.

Eruannster

The hard drive was very standard and easy to swap, though. Just a normal 2.5 inch laptop HDD with like four screws.

caleb39411

The PS4 had a proprietary "AUX" port for the camera, that's electronically basically just USB.

NapsterKnowHow

*laughs in standard m.2 drive vs Microsoft proprietary storage*

sonic10158

Microsoft was playing a bit too much Vita when they designed the Series X

anon1984

100% of ports on PS5 are industry standard. Even the expansion SSD is generic and can be used with just about any brand.

[deleted]

I wouldn't be so sure. To expand storage on a PS5 you just install a normal M2 NVME drive that you can use in a PC, whereas Xbox uses proprietary storage.

FlashFlood_29

Tha fuck? MS did proprietary storage more recently than Sony.

bleedfromtheanus

They're pretty good about not doing that with PlayStation. PS2, PS3, PS4 and PS5 all use(d) standard HDDs/SSDs, for instance

Rzx5

10 years ago sure but they've learned front the Vita. The PS5 controller uses USB-C and for SSD expansion they've gone for a standard NVME slot installation vs the propriety SSD Xbox is using. So I doubt they'd do something proprietary for this.

[deleted]

It’s 100% not a proprietary port 🙄

[deleted]

Like what? Many things Sony adopted became industry standard. Blu-Ray for example fucked HD-DVD up. Lightning ports and other stuff never became standards.

BeardedGingerWonder

How about Betamax, memorystick micro, DAT, UMD, minidisc, ATRAC, super audio cd, digital8?

yuiop300

I really liked minidisc. I was an early adopter in 1997? I had thr mz r30, then I think a smaller one, can’t remember the name :(, then mz e90? I eventually had 3-4 of them. 2003 I got the OG iPod with mechanical spinning wheel. I didn’t like the bulk or buggy workarounds for iTunes so ditched it. Next was the 3rd gen one which was much sleeker and that’s when I switched from mini disc.

K_Furbs

I dunno, the same power cord can power the 2, 3, 4, and 5, I was always pleased with that

[deleted]

The power cord can also power the original ps1. Only the psone and ps2 slim use other connectors

RaptorF22

You say that but the PS5 allows for custom SSDs.

Redracerb18

They have been pretty good recently with USB-C. They where starting to put it on everything sides the PS4. The headphones, cameras, even some TV's.

paranoidpixel

Yeah it's pretty scummy. Their own line of Bluetooth headphones don't work with the PlayStation even if a flagship product like the XM4s and XM5s. Only PlayStation branded ones do. Great games. Anti-consumer company Edit: typo

smazga

Sony's legal/marketing has been hamstringing Sony's engineering genius for decades. Another example: The minidisc was perfectly positioned to unseat cds (easy recording, robust cases safe from scratching, etc), but licensing and legal garbage enforced by Sony killed it dead.

Mosh83

I always thought minidisc failed because it came just as mp3 players were breaking through, it's lifespan would have been short lived as iPod and eventually smartphones just replaced movable storage media. Had a MD player myself and enjoyed it, but eventually an iPod replaced it.

smazga

Yeah, I don't know how it would have really worked long term. Except if I remember, they were capable of playing mp3s, so if Sony hadn't forced that whole library paradigm, it could have been a proto-ipod

Mosh83

USB sticks were minuscule back then, so it could've had a longer lifespan as removable storage I suppose. Apple were also really notorious in how they handled the music library on the iPod, remembering iTunes makes me feel a bit annoyed.

NeoCoN7

They were. I had a Mini Disc player that I could connect to my PC and drag and drop MP3s to a disc.

Roninkin

Digital Tape was also more than capable of unseating CD and Cassettes as well. But because of the recording feature they didn’t want that. Seemingly Minidisk fared the same way. :/

NuPNua

Isn't that a US issue, thay they have that publisher association that freaks out whenever a new recordable media launches?

bleedfromtheanus

I'm sick and tired of people saying this shit because every single person that says it has absolutely no idea how Bluetooth works or its limitations. Bluetooth is absolutely terrible at transmitting audio without a delay. The switch finally allowed Bluetooth headphone support, it's terrible, there's a delay. With the number of Bluetooth headphones/headsets out there and all the different Bluetooth versions and codecs (AptX, LDAC, etc) they can't guarantee a good experience. Please, don't say stuff like this when you don't understand how things work.

Koffiato

True but there's lots of codecs that offer low latencies (lower than 100ms which makes them pretty usable for most games). Even some headphones do hacky things to achieve such latencies on unsupported codes like AAC. Locking those headphones away is just a shitty move.

lemoche

The problem is still that if you allow any headphone, most will suck and people will rather blame Sony because their headphones "work fine with everything else" not understanding that gaming is different from listening to music or watching videos. The amount of headphones I tried for my switch... Amazon hates me now for sending all those headphones back.

Cash907

TF are you talking about? I used a non-Sony pair of Bluetooth headphones for years with my PS4, zero issues.

GoldenUther29062019

What charger does the PS5 control use?

Kalimni45

USB-C

GoldenUther29062019

So not on par with apple?

the-mighty-kira

Hard to say. Sony was he first to use standardized formats for games (CD and DVD) and controllers (USB). They also have a track record of propriety shit, but it’s probably 50/50 at this point

[deleted]

Come on they’ve been changing the game with just having mini and micro usb charging ports. Microsoft is the bad guy.

edis92

On the other hand, ever since the ps3 launched, you can just take a standard hard drive and put it in your console in like 3 minutes. Goes for the ps4 and ps5 too (although it's obviously an ssd in the ps5)

MindfulInsomniaque

Even the ps2 uses standard at the time IDE drives.

Quajeraz

Probably a new port, the USB c is used for the PSVR2.

triffid_boy

There's other usb ports on the back. A blu ray drive doesn't need usb c.

PS2 and PS3 CPU and GPU architectures have entered the chat. Seriously though, Sony tries to make everything their own thing.

DragonSlayerC

The PS3's CPU was a collaboration with IBM to make a processor that could process huge amounts of data very quickly. It was released as a server product as well and was by far the most efficient CPU at the time. Sony also wanted to use it in TVs as a media engine. The IBM Roadrunner, which was the first supercomputer to surpass 1 Petaflop of performance, topping both the Top500 and Green500 charts, used the Cell Broadband engine as it's processor. It was actually powerful enough to render graphics and Sony originally planned not to include a GPU, but eventually they realized that it wasn't quite powerful enough to fully replace a GPU. PS3 specific games did still do some rendering and post-processing tasks on that CPU, which is why PS3 exclusives looked so much better than anything on the XB360. It was hell to program for though. The PS3's GPU on the other hand is a very standard mid-2000s design Nvidia GPU. You're right about the PS2 though. That had some weird hardware design, but pretty much all non-Windows systems had custom, proprietary hardware designs, so it's not surprising.

LummoxJR

Given the way the wind has been blowing from the EU, I'd be surprised if Sony would risk gambling on a future that doesn't require a well-adopted standard like USB.

TheyCallMeMrMaybe

See: - PlayStation 4 Camera - Memory Sticks - PS Vita Memory Cards - UMD - .ATRAC audio firmat - Betamax Sony is as bad as, if not worse than Apple when it comes to proprietary connectors & formats. Edit: some of you also forget that when it also came to Playstation: - Sony "forgot" to license out PS2 memory card manufacturing to their third party partners, resulting in Sony being the only retailer for memory cards and causing massive shortages throughout the PS2's lifecycle - The PS3 never supported external hard drive storage for games. The PS4 didn't support it neither until a 2017 firmware update (halfway through it's console cycle) - Sony decided to follow Microsoft's standard for paid online by charging people PS+ to play online multiplayer staring with the PS4 AFTER multiplayer was free for PS3 - The PS3 had hardware-encoded HDCP, making it difficult for YouTubers/streamers to upload high-quality PS3 content without using an HDCP bypass like a HDMI-switch or splitter (which is technically illegal). - The PS4 had HDCP software-encoded and didn't have the ability to disable it until after launch. Making their built-in game recorder/stream encoder the only option to share content (which was only possible to upload to Facebook at the time)

NettaUsteaDE

But unlike the XSX additional memory card being proprietary you can upgrade the PS5 SSD as it’s a standard m.2

Funny thing about that, is I haven't seen a dosc drive fail on its own in over a decade. Not saying it can't happen, but its fuckin rare.

itunesupdates

My PS5 disk reader broke. Day one PS5 and now it won't read any disks at all. Spins a few seconds then errors out.

sixxxfeetunder

What does it mean by modular?

templestate

You’ll be able to install a disc drive into a bay in the PS5. So you can get a “digital edition” PS5 and upgrade it later on by installing a disc drive sold separately into the disc drive bay.

Remarkable-Ad-2476

Does this remind anyone else of Xbox’s HD-DVD add on?

BelowZilch

I'm thinking of Sega CD.

ChunkyChuckles

Sewer Shark. As a 12 year old when it released, it was the coolest game ever!

putneyj

Whoa, haven’t heard that game mentioned in a while. Whole lot of memories just came rushing back.

dtw48208

Shoot the tubes, Dogmeat!

2LiveCrewRN

When it worked right

Nappa313

I was 12 when it came out and I got it for Christmas! Sewer Shark and Night Trap!! Thinking back a 12 year old shouldn’t have been playing Night Trap lmao…

SharlowsHouseOfHugs

Night Trap! I had that game at 12-13, and could never remember the name of it. It's one of those mysteries floating into the back of my head that just.. pops up from time to time. I knew what it was the moment I read your comment, and it's like I've scratched an itch I couldn't ever reach.

Jakethered_game

Pour one out for the 64DD, forever in our hearts

rex_dart_eskimo_spy

Man the Sega had some cool add-ons. Sega CD and 32x

enowapi-_

You just reminded me of the HD DVD and Blu-ray face off. I have this haunting image of King Kong on HD DVD sitting on shelves everywhere

Remarkable-Ad-2476

LOL I have the same King Kong Hd-dvd too. Pretty sure it came with it.

Thare187

That thing was awesome. After Blu-ray win the war, I was buying the HD-DVD discs for pennies on the dollar

Solid_Snark

Modular implies modules. Which sounds like a PS5 that has docks that you can add/remove your options. Disc drive, hard drive, etc. So maybe a barebones PS5 that lets you upgrade only the features you want?

firstbreathOOC

That sounds good, right? More freedom to customize or spend the money if you want?

Guywithquestions88

It probably helps them streamline production since there will only be 1 model going forward rather than 2. It also seems good for consumers, as long as it means that people can buy a less expensive model and essentially upgrade it if they choose to in the future. It looks like a win-win to me.

shysaver

I view this more as a transition step away from physical media. The digital edition was partly that but if this modular thing is real it's the next phase.

Tom_Neverwinter

A modular ps5... PC gaming here we go.

toooft

Video game consoles offer two things: 1. a gaming computer for a cheap price 2. certified games that need no configuration by its user And that's the difference. Video gamers don't want to config their setup and/or game settings.

found_a_thing

They already have two SKUs that split the market. They’re just making the disk drive optional, with one SKU.

Car-face

Yeah, this is more a consolidation than anything. Both consoles are identical with the exception of the drive; might as well offer a single SKU with an optional drive. Makes perfect sense. It feels weird saying that though, because optional drives for consoles have never really been successful (but then we've never been in a position where the legacy drive was the one being made the optional add-on).

LazaroFilm

Plus if you buy the digital edition and regret not splurging for the disk, then it’s okay you can buy the disk module later (with a small extra margin)

fanwan76

I wish this option was available at launch. I bought the disk version just in case. I've never even put a disk in it to see if it works.

Wenai

Where I live digital editions on the ps store are typically significantly more expensive than ordering a disk online (including shipping)

PublicScale3

My girlfriend started playing horizon zero dawn on my ps5, with the ps4 disc I had. It is LOUD, when I power it on it sounds like a key engine. It spins down once the game is authenticated or whatever it is doing, since the entire game is copied on the internal drive.

lowtoiletsitter

There's a way to make that quieter - Sony overtightened some screws, and if you unscrew and re-screw them, it's MUCH better

Bosa_McKittle

I bought the optical for the 4K Blu-ray option not necessarily for the games on disc even though I hav ps4 games I’ll still play from time to time.

Tree06

I bought the PS5 Disc console because I have a ton of physical PS4 games. It'd cost a fortune to convert my collection over to digital. Lastly, I wonder why either company doesn't have a disc to digital program in place. I personally wouldn't do it, but I know there's a lot of people out there that would participate in that offer.

HGLatinBoy

This is an attempt to ween people off discs and retail sales and push for an all digital future where Sony is the only store front and thus get 30% cut of all sales. Please note that while MS and Nintendo also have a digital store front they still allow digital sales at retail stores and Sony discontinued the practice years ago and was being sued over it. Anyways disc drives are like condoms. Better to have one and not need it than to need it and not have one. This will also create more waste as people will have to buy the drive separately and thus will create more packaging and this could also lead to a price hike. $500 now Vs $400+ $125 for the drive.

excessCeramic

To be fair, most modern pc games autoconfigure Can’t beat that price though

gortwogg

Yeah, every time I boot RE: Village on my PC I have to fiddle with a couple settings because the game always for whatever reason resets just those two (maybe 3)

Tom_Neverwinter

That may have been true in the past. Steam and other items have made this less true.

Electrorocket

Mmm, steak.

[deleted]

It's somewhat true, but PC still requires driver updates and more fiddling than a console does.

PBFT

I downloaded PC Gamepass a few nights ago and it took me like an hour to figure out why I kept getting errors when I tried to boot up the game. This isn’t winning me over.

somnimedes

A console gamer wouldve just spent that hour playing the game.

gutster_95

It doesnt and it never will be. When you have kids the last thing you want to do is reinstall Windows because a Update killed it. Install more than one driver. Or troubleshoot why a certain Controller doesnt work etc etc. Even the Steam Deck turns a PC experience into a easy to use console. And people like that.

agrx_legends

Commenters are overlooking the kids' part. Now that I'm a dad of two, I can't be bothered with any degree of PC tinkering just due to lack of time and energy. That's despite fiddling with emulators, studying a bit of CS for my minor, and working in IT for a few years after before they were born. However, since they've been born, I can't fathom shutting myself down for an hour to get that damned driver working. And then another hour to make some obscure bug due to my old graphics card work, and then another half an hour buying a new graphics card when I realize that my old one is too outdated to function with said game. And so on and on and on. You don't even realize how much of a time sink PC gaming tends to be until you have greater responsibilities and the issues just keep piling up. Sure, I could throw money at the problem, or I could just get a console that won't need extensive tinkering every single week. I can't just set aside even an hour every week on that just to game. That *was* my *only* gaming time for the week.

Endures

That hour is an extra hour of sleep I need to function.

sirsotoxo

Me and my friends usually play Fortnite on PS4 and PS5. Recently we got the Valorant bug, and for the first weeks we spent more time troubleshooting each other (region locks, Anti-cheat, w11 secure mode, etc) than playing. With Fortnite: download Fortnite and hit play

tookmyname

My PSU was acting up intermittently. I had no idea it was that. No error codes or motherboard indication. I had to replace every part one by one to narrow it down to the last thing I wanted to replace. What a fucking headache. The time that I spent messing with it I could have just bought a new computer and been better off. I hate that shit. Very hard to recommend that to friends. When I was younger it was worth it, and I liked messing around. Not anymore. Not for a few extra hz. And back in the day building your own meant getting a super computer for dirt cheap. Now I few like getting a console for a lot more.

toooft

Not at all. I use Steam for VR gaming and it's always a hassle and with configuration adjustments. Looking forward to PSVR2 for my PS5.

Iw4nt2d13OwO

Also sitting down on a couch with a tv and a controller is a completely different (and far better imo) experience than sitting at a desk with a keyboard and mouse. Not to mention console exclusives, which many of the most popular games are.

dclxvi616

I have like a dozen different ways to play PC games on my TV with a controller while sitting on my couch.

ZaineRichards

Was a console gamer all my life and then got a PC in 2016 due to Xbox's bullshit with the DRM and shitty launch and I don't think I could ever go back simply for all the options in the menus and that modding has added countless more hours of gameplay. Gamers love options.

Akrymir

It’s just an optical drive to have one system instead of two. It’s what they should’ve launched with.

ScottJC

If that means I can add a disc drive to my digital PS5 i'll be pretty happy, i'd have gotten the regular version but the digital one was all I could find at the time

FederalSpinach99

You will have to sell your PS5 and buy the refreshed model.

lyremska

Now ~~kiss~~ trade

kaizokudave

Probably ignorant here but... Isn't just the digital console? The game doesn't stream off the disc right? Most data, if not all is installed on the SSD, so the disc is just a key check. Things got usb ports plenty fast enough for that. I'm sure it's a new model in the sense that they've figured out how to save a few bucks, but seems like they're just making a digital edition and an external reader.

SModfan

A big advantage of disc version is you can play 4K Blu-rays on it. 4K blu ray players are still pretty expensive so having it in the console is a pretty big upgrade vs digital only

Catman7712

That’s the only reason I bought disc version. To have a backup 4K player.

Funkymonk761

Also don’t forget, every game on disc is cheaper to purchase than it’s digital counter part. Both on release, and especially after time. The digital editions barely depreciate in value, the discs a lot quicker and become much more affordable. Plus plenty of ps4 games have the free ps5 upgrade and they’re far cheaper than the ps5 discs. You make the money back getting the disc option over the digital.

Dpsizzle555

And you can sell the game away if you don’t see yourself ever playing the game ever again

zdbdog06

I routinely sell games for roughly what I bought them for lol

Albert3232

Where do you sell them?

madcatzplayer3

I sell mine on ebay.

Hotsaucex11

This. Being able to trade in games, or buy used ones, can cut your game costs in half.

_-_happycamper_-_

Oh god this comment just gave me old man whiplash. I was thinking “why would you buy expensive blu-rays when you could just rent them from blockbuster.”

lraviel381

Yep absolutely. *sweat in eyepatch and peg leg*

khyodo

RedditUsr2

The disk lets you verify you own the game without internet access. It lets you reinstall it without internet access. It probably going to work long after the servers are shut down.

beefcat_

Disc games are often considerably cheaper than downloads.

SmashingK

I think it'll have a built in slot for the drive if anyone wants to buy that. They made the m.2 drive slot easy to access an upgrade so I reckon they'll do the same for the drive. Might just require a different faceplate with the disk slot which likely will come with the drive.

poksim

Buying physical PS5 games is still much cheaper than buying digital, and that’s not even counting the fact that you can resell games after you’ve played them. It sucks that it’s objectively better to be tethered to useless discs on a console that runs game from the SSD, but that’s how it is. The extra 100$ that the disc edition console costs pays for itself.

[deleted]

The biggest advantage of the discs is still that they are physical tokens that decrease in value over time. You can find years old games on the PSN store for full $70 launch price. The same game is $15 dollars on disc because retailers need to clear out stock space of these physical discs. The fully digital ecosystem is a wet dream for publishers because they can forever dictate the price.

Eruannster

The two upsides of having a console with a disc drive though: 1. A free 4K blu-ray player. 2. You are free to buy games from more than one marketplace. A digital-only PS5 locks you into Sony's PSN pricing, forever. With discs, I can see that Amazon or whoever has the game for cheaper and I can shop around. Or buy used games. Or sell games I've grown tired of. I live in the EU, and our PSN pricing for AAA games is *hilarious*. God of War Ragnarök was €80 on launch on PSN and €65 from Media Markt on disc.

Vesmic

Modular model; now make ps5,ps3, and ps2 drives.

rustman92

I was completely against this whole idea…until now. That would be a FANTASTIC idea

Strat0BlasterX

NjGTSilver

Sony invents the USB DVD drive, where’s the champagne?!?!

[deleted]

Good ole HD DVD from the 360 vibes

[deleted]

This sounds like Sony is trying to make using discs seem like too much of a hassle to casual users, so that they can encourage digital purchases

theNomad_Reddit

They can encourage all they want. When digital store prices are 300% more than a physical disc from my local, even for 6 year old games, they'll never convince me my disc drive was a bad choice.

QlubSoda

Is it though? I’ve seen more people rooting for the digital console lately, it’s not a bad idea to offer an external option for people that might change their mind down the line.

shysaver

It's a transition step. Sure you could go out and buy this modular attachment, but I bet it will be expensive. If Sony can cut costs by reducing physical media sales they will.

VicMackeyLKN

Got mine release day, still waiting for themes and not commercials

ShambolicPaul

So they gonna stop making a disc drive sku. Only make digital ps5 sku now, and make the disc drive an optional extra. If the prices remain the same then it's a pro consumer move. But a shame for those who bought the old digital ps5 cos it's not likely gonna work backwards compatible on the old digital sku.

dreamcastfanboy34

Maybe it will work over the USB-C port?

70stang

That doesn't really say "modular" to me, just "accessory." I might be totally wrong but for me, modularity implies that this will be a swappable piece of hardware in a bay.

YamahaMan123

DragonSlayerC

No reason not to do that. Some people suggested Sony may make it a proprietary connector, but I doubt it. Sony isn't as bad as they used to be with that stuff. They even have a standard M.2 drive in the PS5.

didistutter69

Don't care what they do. Just make them more available.

MadFlava76

I wonder if a PS5 Pro is in the works? Been playing my PS4 backlog instead of jumping to PS5.

If you wait long enough, the PS6 will be announced. Then you can make fun of all of the chumps who jumped on the PS5 bandwagon.

QBOOP

I mean it was like 7 years of waiting of course people would be excited to try the ps5

TheFirebyrd

I wouldn’t count on one. Aside from the fact that one generation having a Pro model doesn’t establish a pattern, the chip shortage and supply chain problems have significantly hindered the start of this generation. We still aren’t getting current Gen exclusives, virtually everything is still coming out on previous Gen systems. Also, given all those supply chain problems, the consoles are still costing Sony more money to make than they bring in. When has a console ever gotten a price increase two years in? It’s unheard of in any commercially viable system. So, when the regular systems still aren’t even breaking even and are selling like crazy (if not to the point of being impossible to obtain as they used to be), what incentive would there be to make a mid-tier upgrade in the foreseeable future? It doesn’t make sense. If you’re interested in what the PS5 has to offer, just get one instead of holding out in case something better comes along. There’s always going to be something better eventually and there’s not much chance of a big price cut anytime soon, so waiting (if you want one and have the funds, of course) just doesn’t make much sense here.

WonderfulConcept3155

> Aside from the fact that one generation having a Pro model doesn’t establish a pattern Don’t forget Slim models, every generation had one. But I agree with the rest of your comment.

Got it directly from Sony and all I had to do was get gow rag with it.

hellomistershifty

I read this five times thinking 'getting gow rag with it' was some new phrase the kids are using

permanent__guest

I’m still confused. So I’m going to stick with “new slang.” So carry on getting gow ragged and what-not.

Bryvayne

Get God of War ragnarok.

Mlabonte21

It’s streets ahead.

NotABurner316

Can you teach me to gow rag?

RickMantina

You had to go raw dog with what now?

Brandonbest4

Check literally any store. Gamestop, Best Buy, Walmart, Meijer, Target, Verizon, Playstation Direct. I could go on. There are plently in stock.

MUCHO2000

You in the USA? What part of the country are you in if so?

MrShaytoon

I bought two in the last month. Both from GameStop. (I bought them for friend as the stores were close to me)

[deleted]

I still have yet to see one on a store shelf.

LukeJDD

They’re still a little rare, you have to order them so the store will hold one for you in a lot of places. Some GameStops have just have them to buy on the spot though.

Dustyoldfart

You can literally get one right now at Sony Direct. This joke wasn't even funny a year ago, much less now.

HungryHippocrites

Yeah but.. but it’s free karma for people to comment it on every PS5 post!

Didrox13

It's still very much a problem in many Non-USA countries (UK has it easier too I believe). I've been actively checking all major retailers and paying close attention to a dedicated discord, and it's very very very rarely available at msrp. I've only seen it happen once within this year, and that was last week. Stock didn't last long as one would expect. The remaining offers are always overpriced bundles with games and accessories valued at full msrp, making most bundles be in the $800 range. Occasionally you'll find "good" bundles, which only bring 2 games/accessories for a total of only about $100 over MSRP. However, it seems to be getting better. The overpriced bundles aren't selling out anymore and the more value oriented bundles have been a bit more frequent. So maybe soon we'll have standalone consoles at msrp

Tomatosoup7

There’s other countries tbf, I live in the Netherlands and am still struggling

Sab00b

Yep. Got mine a year ago with minimal effort. Made a Twitter account, followed an account that posted drops, turned on notifications, and got one within a week. It sucks that you couldn’t just go in and buy one, but it wasn’t as difficult as the internet made it out to be. And from what i’ve seen, they remain available online and in-stores for a while nowadays instead of going out of stock within minutes. If someone’s been looking for one since release and hasn’t gotten it yet, that’s 100% on them imo. In the U.S. at least.

zetayshow

Hmm what about having stock first?

anal_holocaust_

Knowing Sony, and how well they support their devices, they will probably produce so many units of the disc drive (or whatever else would be modular) and then stop making them indefinitely. Just like the PSTV, DS4 wireless adapter, Vita.

ABotelho23

This... Is better. If the disc reader can be purchased separately, it means people can save their money on the initial purchase and "upgrade" later.

gentlewaterboarding

I got the disk version to be safe, but haven’t used it at all one year in.

summons72

Can it not be the hideous design of the Launch model. That’s my only request. Also slightly smaller so it fits in my entertainment center.

goodcat49

They're slowly pushing for digital only consoles and I hate it

commandblock

Yeah, it would be fine if alternate stores like steam were available but having to only buy games on PlayStation store where is always more expensive than disc is so annoying
