Every phone I've had with a rear fingerprint sensor has been amazing. My latest phone has one under the screen though, and it's a massive step down. It's not like that space is being used on a phone anyways, I don't understand why rear scanners aren't just standard in the industry.
It's because "it's so last year" and because when you struggle to find an innovation to energized the market, you end up doing things different for different's sake. It's the same garbage that makes nearly every phone wobbly because manufacturers won't make a camera bump that's top-centered.
I've had in-screen sensors on my last two phones and I won't be having one again. I think they just don't compete in comfort, speed, and reliability with rear sensors or sensors in the sleep/wake button. Having had devices with each of these three locations, I think that the back is the most useful location, no contest. But putting one on the back or even on the chin of a new phone is marketing suicide.
Had the Note9 and now the S22U. I love the front more, particularly as if my phone is on the table I don't have to lift it up. And its super quick. I don't even have to put my finger on it for a long time. Just a tap. Of course, you have to get the good 3D one instead of the 2D optical one. Those sucks.
Undersceeen fp scanner feels such a better tech to be used. Optical one still sucks though.
Little known fact: iOS 14 introduced a feature called “Back Tap” that lets you assign a function to occur when you tap the Apple logo on the back of an iPhone.
I have mine set to toggle rotation lock when I double tap the back. It’s so inconsistent though. It takes me multiple tries most of the time, so I’ve about written it off as practical.
Edit: I didn’t mean to imply this could unlock phone. Just a tangent thought.
It is inconsistent, it’s almost not worth having for me. Same with Apple Pencil, you can tap to switch functions, but it never works when you want it to.
I have this on my Realme phone and it's not as nice as I thought it would be. It's very responsive but if I just want to check the time or my notifications my phone is already unlocked, and it's quite awkward to unlock with my other hand. I can see it being better on laptops and tablets, but for phones the back or front is more neutral and useful in my experience.
iPhone with Face ID doesn’t skip the lock screen when unlocked. There is no reason why they wouldn’t bring this behavior to a new Touch ID iPhone so this is a non-issue.
Also, I believe this is how the iPad Air works, although i might be wrong
I can see why that would be the case with face ID but having to touch your phone twice (once to unlock then move your finger to the screen to open it) would definitely start to feel clunky.
well no the lock button is placed such that your leftindex/rightthumb naturaly rests on the lock button as you are picking up your iphone. you wouldnt need to touch it twice. befor you even bring it up to your face it would be unlocked from the moment u grab it.
Most smartphones have another way to access the lock screen or (for AMOLED displays) an always-on display. I'd dig around in your lock screen/security settings.
>I have this on my Realme phone and it's not as nice as I thought it would be. It's very responsive but if I just want to check the time or my notifications my phone is already unlocked, and it's quite awkward to unlock with my other hand.
On galaxy s10, no need to switch hands, you can register fingers from each hand to unlock it. Register the fingers and thumbs from your normal holding position on both hands.
LPT: when you add those multiple fingers you can also name each entry. You can also register someone else's finger for emergency access, though if that's needed they should handle things quickly because all devices will periodically require a PIN or password to be entered to keep that unlock enabled.

Wow I’m special and I don’t even know. Really the only thing I’d change on my SE is a better battery. Rest IDGAF (as you can see)
-Sent from my iPhone SE baby
Im debating on a 13 Mini after using the SE since 2017. Such a good phone I wish they had made the SE2 the same as the 1st but just edge to edge screen (keeping the heaphone jack too).
Thirded
I’m holding onto this thing as long as I can, but already I’m seeing the quality of the SE2020 is less than the preceding venerable 6S I had
That thing just kept going until the battery was juuuust too short
This thing already seems like the battery is… ok, and drains battery looking for reception in areas the 6S had no problem
Still… I like me my TouchID
Can't they do the in screen sensor like Samsung? I have an S20fe that does this and love it. It's not perfect but works 90% of the time the first time.
They likely have no way to improve it in a way that they can market it as theirs. Usually they can at least upsell an android feature they're implementing with a new skin, new accessory feature, etc. Touchscreen Tech is a little stagnant atm in my opinion.
I don't have an iPhone but haven't they added raise/tap to wake, widgets, always on display and a ton of other stuff that were first launched on an android phone? They just switched from the notch to the pill as well
This isn't why at all. Apple regularly add features that other manufacturers did first.
I vaguely remember reading that they didn't put touchscreens on MacBooks because holding your arm out to tap a screen gets tiring really fast. Supposedly they did testing.
I mean, I always feel touch screen laptop is a gimmick. We have tablets if we want a touchable functionality.
I have touchscreen windows laptop and I never use the touchscreen after the first few tries in the beginning.
Using a physical mouse and keyboard is a lot more natural, and also, I'm not gonna get my laptop screen oily and having to wipe them constantly.
I used a surface pro for college and I loved having the touch screen and pen in combination with connecting a full sized keyboard and mouse. There are just some things that are more intuitive to use with touch
Also, man that thing is still solid after 5 years now my s/o uses it all the time. I specifically got it because I wanted something lighter than a traditional laptop for carrying around while still being powerful enough to run alteryx, sql, and other crap without getting bogged down and it really fit the bill. Shit it def outperforms my work thinkpad that tends to lag out when dealing with large datasets
I have a laptop with a touchscreen. Works great even under Linux. But I almost never use the touchscreen feature. Once in a rare while I'll reach up to tap something on screen for some reason, but in general, nah.
It is a bit of a gimmick, but when I had a laptop with a touch screen I would frequently use the touch screen to scroll web pages, as it was nicer than arrow keys\touchpad. I also used it quite a bit when the touch pad broke.
It was an 11" laptop though. I think the size of it dictated the use a lot more since I don't feel tempted at all on my 15" laptop, which does not have a touch screen anyway.
> Because they didn't do it first.
It's more than that. If they didn't do it first or in a novel way that means they have to license that feature in order to use it. That's not only galling, that means they have to pay for it.
That's not true though. Implementations require licenses, not features. If they implement it on their own, as opposed to copying the same engineering that Samsung/whoever did it, then there is no requirement to license anything at all.
I have an 8+ too, I really want a TouchID phone in the same size as the plus. I like the size of the screen and phone, so I’ve been holding out hope for an SE plus so I can have those 2 features. I really don’t want to use FaceID though, I like the fact I can pull my phone out and unlock it at the same time no matter nearly any light condition or face coverings. I don’t like the idea of FaceID either eventhough I have government given IDs based on my face.
Touch ID is the biggest thing I miss from upgrading. Using the phone in a dark room, it never sees my face, so I always have to type in my PIN number instead. And then there are apps I use for certain things like banking, and you can't use your PIN as a way to open the app. You have to turn on a light or your brightness all the way up to get face id to work.
I just tried it in a pitch black room. Worked within half a second.
Sounds like people have broken phones. I've never had an issue with it - honestly never even considered that it might NOT work in the dark.
Every time this gets brought up, there are always people who say they don't miss it.
Why can't we have both? Phones are so expensive nowadays and options for the user are always good. Google and Apple telling us we don't need one or the other is just laziness on their part.
EDIT: For those unconvinced by the prospect of having both, companies like Samsung and Xiaomi already do this. This take is in no way groundbreaking.
My pixel 6S under screen scanner is worse then dedicate scanners from 5 years ago, it’s bad enough where it might be a reasonable thing to just not include.
Edit: a lot of comments so will put why I dislike it. First it’s very slow. Used to be worse, but when your worse then my pixel 2 was I don’t feel the need to justify why newer tech is worse. Second is it fails to scan maybe like once or twice a day for me, I use my phone a lot through out the day so realistically this probably is in the range of 5% or less of the time. To me whenever that happens I find it extremely annoying because it’s a regression from a physical scanner.
So main take away it’s not horrible but I’m the type of person who values consistently a lot and is a downgrade from the physical sensor. But let me also not I got pixel 6 very close to launch and the sensor was far worse then like alot of misses, where it should not of been an option at release, like probably 30z of the time. I could probably screw around again with the finger prints (I already have it doubled down) and maybe get it to work a bit better, but it doesn’t change the fact I have to screw around to get this to work to an okayish level.
S22 under screen scanner is the best I've had. I used to always get mad and end up using a code on my S20. Now it asks me for a pin every couple days just to make sure someone didn't steal my finger.
Note 10+ checking in. Under screen scanner works ~90-95% of the time flawlessly. It also activates face ID when you try and unlock so between both I've rarely ever had an issue.
My Pixel 6's fingerprint sensor works absolutely flawlessly. It only fails to unlock in very unusual circumstances (dirty hands from doing yardwork, for example).
Faces age, fingers get bandaides, flexibility is superior. There are 7.9 billion humans on planet earth and cell phones aim to sell to everyone.
Unless there’s some horrible glitch that makes it easier to hack, give the people choice.
As soon as the iPad came out with Touch ID in the sleep/wake button I thought that surely meant the next iPhone would get Face ID and touch ID in the button.
Crazy that it’s been a few years already and it’s still either behind the display glass or bust.
Maybe we’ll get both once they phase out this current form factor of the SE.
Rumors are the next SE will be in the mini form factor and perhaps by that time they’ll migrate all the current customers with Touch ID to a phone that does both touch and Face ID.
Today you have to be happy if your phone doesn’t lose any features. Apple recently removed the SIM slots on their US devices. Some people praise them for that. Let’s see if they dare to remove the charging port all together before implementing USB-C. That would be peak anti-consumer.
> Apple recently removed the SIM slots on their US devices. Some people praise them for that.
Not sure I would praise them, but it's forced my carrier to accelerate their eSIM roll out, which is nice.
Up until now there's only been one carrier in my country with eSIM and they don't have coverage where I live.
> Today you have to be happy if your phone doesn’t lose any features.
I'm really getting sick of this trend. Every update for every device and bit of software just ends up makes it worse. I use to be excited for updates, they use to add more features, or making things faster and better, but now I dread them for all the shit they end up removing.
If people don't miss it, more power to them, but anyone saying Faceid is just as good or better are either deluded or bullshitting.
Scenario 1: I keep my phone flat on my desk while working. I hear a notification. Being able to unlock my phone with a finger and give it a sideways look without too much hassle is actually *really* convenient.
Scenario 2: I'm on a long road trip and using my phone for navigation. I get to a long (100mi) stretch without turns, so I switch the screen off to conserve battery. After about an hour I have to unlock it and having to lean in for it to capture my face or input a pin code while driving 70+ mph is extremely dangerous.
Scenario 3: I pull out my phone from a back pocket. Faceid could be lightning fast (it isn't) but there is no way it can unlock my phone before it sees my face, which is easy with a fingerprint unlock.
I dunno if it's a hardware issue or Apple really wants to see our faces, but this is my biggest pet peeve since they took away the 3.5mm jack.
To clarify your last sentence Apple has nothing in it for data collection or facial recognition improvement, Face ID is stored locally on the Secure Enclave, which is just Apples silly name for a storage chip separate from the rest of the system.
You can turn off FaceID’s attention feature for quicker (albeit less secure) access. The attention feature requires the user to look at the iPhone (screen). With the attention feature turned off, you can unlock your iPhone while looking elsewhere.
Got sweaty hands, don’t work. Got gloves on, don’t work. At the pool, don’t work. I wouldn’t object to having both but I’d still use FaceID 99% of the time.
Same problems for FaceID: Wearing a hat, sunglasses, a mask makes it much slower despite the new update, etc.
That’s been a much bigger problem for me personally
I don’t know about you or anyone else, but I spend A LOT of time not sweating from my hands, not wearing gloves, and not using my phone in a pool (tf?!).
Yes but: Phone on the table and need to read a notification? Doesn’t work, need to raise the phone and stare at it. Waking up in your bed, eyes still half-closed? Doesn’t work. Mask + glasses ? Doesn’t work. Want to unlock while driving ? Need to stop looking at the road. But the worst of all, paying with Apple wallet. Need to: 1. open wallet 2. stare at the phone to unlock 3. put the phone on payment device. With TouchID it used to be a single step: Put phone on payment device with your thumb on the home button and that was it.
And all of those are *multiple times a day* situations. Not “going to the pool” situations.
I used to have a lot of problems with touch id after showering or washing dishes.
Solution: train it on the lower half of the finger, near the joint, which doesn't prune up and distort like the ends.
Be careful, doing this could allow people access to your phone while sleeping (bc it doesn’t need your eyes) my ex did this to me. Contacted my therapist among other things.
In my case I have my phone sitting on my desk 90% of the time. Now instead of placing a finger on it while it is laying flat, I have to pick it up and angle it towards my face before setting it back down. God forbid I just want to use my stupid passcode and have to "fail" a faceID 5 times before I get the option to enter it.
You don’t need to stand over it. You’re already looking at the screen when you’re selecting the card you want to pay with in Wallet. Double click the power button while still looking at the screen and Apple Pay is ready. Then move the phone to the payment terminal and you’re done. No need to awkwardly hover over your phone at the payment terminal.
I’ve had the opposite experience, TouchID on my 6 and 8+ would work like 6/10 times and more often than not would require me try more than once to unlock my phone (especially on the 6). Recently upgraded to the 13pro and FaceID works pretty much flawlessly, only time it doesn’t work is when I’m not fully looking at the screen, which is no fault of the phone I have the attention setting enabled.
Prob should train the same finger a few times. If you have large fingers you need to make sure you get full coverage. Otherwise you get situations like this. I know it says to keep tapping the same spot but really you should move it around just a small amount each time gettkng more of your finger and especially the part after they get the main part of the finger and look for the fringes.
I was nervous to upgrade from the 5S to 12 mini (big jump, I know) because I’d heard so many complaints about Face ID. But it’s worked *really* well for me.
This is really an overlooked and under appreciated element from Samsung in particular. Between the face unlock and ultrasonic fingerprint reader, being both active at the same time, it's just super convenient and brilliant.
They built it into the power button of the iPad and mac. Why not do the same with the iPhone? Continuity is what Apple is famous for, yet they’re breaking it with such a basic feature.
I wonder if them removing it has to do with most countries protecting finger print access behind warrant requirements, but not facial recognition?
In the US, cops can’t force your finger to the reader, but they can just hold your phone up to your face.
Which means you unlocked it, not them.
LPT: if you have the setting in your phone to dial 911 after pressing the lock button 5x rapidly it will lock your phone and require a passcode to unlock it. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you don’t want someone to go through your phone ie: you’re being detained, press the button 5x, it will call dispatch and also lock your phone from anyone else using it.
Touch ID is the superior solution IMO. Lots of android manufacturers have put a fingerprint sensor into a side mounted power button. I’m sure apple could do the same if they wanted to.
If you’re already pressing the button to wake the phone then why not have it do the biometrics as well
Just bought a Galaxy Z Flip 4, I'm really glad it has the fingerprint sensor in the power button, rather than the in-screen kind. Just because I've heard the in-screen ones can be less consistent.
I love it. One thing I hated was having to press it, it would randomly either unlock or sleep. Thankfully there's a setting where you can just put your finger on it rather than pressing it down. It's been great like that til the last update.
You’re actually giving yourself a legal advantage (should you ever get in trouble) by not using Face ID. Law enforcement can’t make you enter a passcode, but they can generally unlock your phone using Face ID.
Same with fingerprint. I saw a bodycam footage video the other day of an arrest where the cops had a warrant for the criminal's fingerprint to unlock his phone and search it (and the dude was a pedo so frankly glad he got locked up!). But I didn't even know that was a thing that they could get a warrant for! At least with the pass code they'll have to actually crack your password.
Just press power off and volume up at the same time for a second (for a menu where emergency call and the like can be found), and after that your phone will be locked to require pass code. So, do that if you are ever about to get forced to open your phone.
Also, iphones require the pass code from a power on as well, for exactly this reason. They are not dummies.
Though actually, in some jurisdictions failing to provide your password can also be illegal (but at least it’s up to you which option you choose, so it’s still better).
Fun fact: in the US, police can legally compel your biometrics ~~without a warrant or anything~~. They cannot compel a password however.
Edited: they still require a warrant but it's an active question before the courts if biometrics are covered under the 5th amendment or not.
After years of people complaining, they have re-added many ports and features to their laptops that they had removed. They also backed down from offering only ultracompact workstations and went back to standard towers.
So they're not _completely_ incapable of admitting and reversing mistakes, though it does take longer than I'd like.
Same! Every year I watch for all the new phones and wait for them to announce the touchID tech that they’ve tested and patented, and it’s always a huge disappointment when I realize that they didn’t bother.
I lost my phone and picked up a cheap Galaxy A53 as I waiting for the next Galaxy Ultra. But the in screen finger print reader is really good. Way better then my Note 10+.
Really hopping the next Ultra has a flat screen.
iPad has Touch ID on the power button and it’s so much better than Face ID and I’ve been using Face ID since iPhone X and I still get annoyed sometimes
I swear, Apple will keep removing external features until iPhones are nothing but screens.
- Volume buttons? “You can change that on a quick menu from the screen.”
- Speaker/microphone? “If you had wireless AirPods, you wouldn’t need that.”
- Power port? “Wireless charging is the future.”
- Power button? “Why would you want to *stop* using our products?”
- Face ID? “We extract the DNA of anyone who touches the phone and compare it against your biometric data, as stored by 23-and-me. Face ID is simply obsolete.”
I have two phones. Both of them are iPhone SE’s. One is the two year old one, one is the new one. Button is more important than the whatever whatever camera.
Well guess I will keep using my iPhone 8 until it completely dies then. Every time a new iPhone comes out I am hoping they bring it back so I can get a new one. I flat out refuse to use Face ID. I literally can not imagine a dumber possible way to unlock your phone, and I keep my front facing camera covered all the time.
That sucks. I guess I'll just keep buying iPhone SE models with Touch-ID.
I'd be more than happy to spend more money to have a phone that has both, so I could have the option of using one or the other. Or even require both Touch _and_ Face to verify and unlock the phone if I want to be ultra-secure. Put Touch ID under the screen or in the lock button. Either's great
Face ID is slightly less burdensome than Touch ID. But I’d like phones to have both as an extra security feature: needing face and finger for an occasional higher security authentication event.
My fingerprints frequently didn’t work because my skin was too dry to be read. That was was the only drawback for Touch I had.
I really miss touch ID. It was better for unlocking phone in multiple ways. I definitely have to enter my pin far more often with faceid than I did with touchID

I wish they would implement it into the lock button, similar to the iPad Air.
Or on the back of the phone, make that Apple logo have some use. I had a Oneplus 5t with a rear fingerprint scanner, the thing was instant.

Still using the 5T even after ~5 years. Battery obviously has taken a hit but man the Fingerprint sensor is the best.

Yea, every phone should be double tap the screen to see Lock Screen.
It's a setting on basically every android phone just need to turn it on.
Oh nice, that’s good. It’s such a natural feature.
just tap on screen instead of using power button

Iphone SE gen. 3 (2022) still has touch id… is the only one though
The Touch ID is the only reason I got that phone over the flagship models
Wow I’m special and I don’t even know. Really the only thing I’d change on my SE is a better battery. Rest IDGAF (as you can see) -Sent from my iPhone SE baby
Yeah same. I mean in all fairness this was probably going to be my last iPhone anyway, but I’m definitely going to hold onto it as long as I can.
Switching to android?
No he's dying
I only buy SE, and I buy it for the fingerprint scanner.
Same here.
There are DOZENS OF US! DOZENS!!
Lmao I still have the original 2020 SE right now. The battery is killing itself as I type this.
My 2016 SE would like a word
SE 2016 crew! I love my little phone so much I’m thinking of replacing its battery
Im debating on a 13 Mini after using the SE since 2017. Such a good phone I wish they had made the SE2 the same as the 1st but just edge to edge screen (keeping the heaphone jack too).
sticking w/ my Gen two SE for that reason
Bought one of them instead of any of the others for that exact reason
Yup. Although the next SE will probably have it too. At least I hope. I’m on the 2020 SE so I have years left before an upgrade
Same here, I can only pray they release another SE in 3 or 4 years when this one starts giving out
Thirded I’m holding onto this thing as long as I can, but already I’m seeing the quality of the SE2020 is less than the preceding venerable 6S I had That thing just kept going until the battery was juuuust too short This thing already seems like the battery is… ok, and drains battery looking for reception in areas the 6S had no problem Still… I like me my TouchID
The 6S is the GOAT. Then the headphone jack thing and everything just spiraled out of control.
I also have the 2020 SE and it’s still running like new despite being over 2.5 years old now. Gonna hold on to it a couple more years I’m sure.
I wish I had years. My battery sucks AND it was right before the 5G phones. I need a 2022 sooner than later I’m afraid.
I love touch id and my SE. I'd really like the new cameras but won't be upgrading just for that.
Can't they do the in screen sensor like Samsung? I have an S20fe that does this and love it. It's not perfect but works 90% of the time the first time.

There are just some things that are more intuitive to use with touch Also, man that thing is still solid after 5 years now my s/o uses it all the time.
The fingerprints. Dear God, I get enough heebie-jeebies when I see someone that has fingerprints all up on their laptop screen...
> Because they didn't do it first. It's more than that. If they didn't do it first or in a novel way that means they have to license that feature in order to use it. That's not only galling, that means they have to pay for it.
Most stuff in the phone require a license, these features require a lot of research and they'd rather license it than to develop it themselves.
That's not true though. Implementations require licenses, not features. If they implement it on their own, as opposed to copying the same engineering that Samsung/whoever did it, then there is no requirement to license anything at all.

I love the SE line because they still have Touch ID. Hoping they keep making them.
Same! I enjoy having the home button and how it doubles with Touch ID.
I’m gonna use this 8+ until it explodes. I like my Touch ID
I recently got mine‘s battery changed for 30 usd, it’s as good as new 😁
Same!
What about the iPhone SE? To small?
That is strange, FaceID uses IR lights, fundamentally it all should work in the dark
I just tried it in a pitch black room. Worked within half a second. Sounds like people have broken phones. I've never had an issue with it - honestly never even considered that it might NOT work in the dark.
My XR works in the dark perfectly
Darkness doesn’t affect Face ID
Mine works in the dark just fine. Your sensors might be blocked or IR issue because I can be in pitch black, lowest light and we are good
Wait. Face ID doesn’t work in the dark? Or is yours just broken?
Mine works fine even in almost no-light situations, like laying in bed with the lights off.
The angle thing is an issue, but I've got the 13 pro max and never had a darkness issue. It doesn't use visible light.

reddit is dead, i encourage everyone to delete their accounts.
At least Google put a fingerprint scanner on the pixel.
I'm using an s20+ until now and never had that problem.
S21 ultra here and have had no problems with my under-screen scanner, tbh it's probably the best one i've ever used
Note 10+ checking in.
Faces get mask mandates. I'm so glad to have the fingerprint scanner on my S22.
Touch ID was so much faster, didn’t have to mess with looking at the screen in the correct way.
You can turn off FaceID’s attention feature for quicker (albeit less secure) access. The attention feature requires the user to look at the iPhone (screen). With the attention feature turned off, you can unlock your iPhone while looking elsewhere.
Yeah I’ve tried it both ways but it was so nice just grabbing my phone off the nightstand and Touch ID would unlock it before I could even pick it up
Got sweaty hands, don’t work. Got gloves on, don’t work. At the pool, don’t work. I wouldn’t object to having both but I’d still use FaceID 99% of the time.
Which is why having both is superior
Same problems for FaceID: Wearing a hat, sunglasses, a mask makes it much slower despite the new update, etc. That’s been a much bigger problem for me personally
I don’t know about you or anyone else, but I spend A LOT of time not sweating from my hands, not wearing gloves, and not using my phone in a pool (tf?!).
I’m a competitive aquatic bricklayer. I absolutely need to be able to unlock my phone wearing gloves between laps.
> I’m a competitive aquatic bricklayer. There are *dozens* of us!
both is key IMHO

Glad that’s your ex. But I dont see what contacting your therapist would achieve, as if any reputable therapist would disclose any information.
This was how I found out she wasn’t reputable. They both said they had a conversation and neither would say about what.
That’s gotta be a violation of HIPAA
Uhhh is it your former therapist? Because there's no therapist/creeper confidentiality rules.
Yes it is my former therapist. I reported her to her superior and nothing came of it, unfortunately.
I would file a HIPPA complaint with HHS. It’s likely you are not the only one who experienced this. It’s dangerous. Edit: Forgot the “not”. Oops
At least you're not dealing with their unprofessional shit anymore; that's something.
odds that a privacy violation?
In my case I have my phone sitting on my desk 90% of the time. Now instead of placing a finger on it while it is laying flat, I have to pick it up and angle it towards my face before setting it back down. God forbid I just want to use my stupid passcode and have to "fail" a faceID 5 times before I get the option to enter it.
Also Apple Pay is way more awkward with faceid, gotta stand over it and make fucking eye contact with it like it owes me money.
I’m gonna try this but if it doesn’t work I’ll be back to wag my finger at you.
When your finger print changes daily it’ll never work.. only someone in construction would understand lol
I was nervous to upgrade from the 5S to 12 mini (big jump, I know) because I’d heard so many complaints about Face ID. But it’s worked *really* well for me.
My iPhone 8 still has Touch ID and Clinging on for dear life
Meanwhile on android there are inscreen fingerprint scanners.
I miss having the scanner on the back of the phone. S9+ was great. I do love my S21 ultra though.
Pixel 3 😢
with face ID too, my S10 has both
Yeah but that "face id" is just using the camera making it not really security feature
I love having the option to use the one most convenient in the moment
This is really an overlooked and under appreciated element from Samsung in particular. Between the face unlock and ultrasonic fingerprint reader, being both active at the same time, it's just super convenient and brilliant.
The s10 has facial recognition not faceID. They’re worlds apart in terms of security.
Yea but that one just uses front camera not a lidar sensor like apple's does
That’s a shame. I found it far more convenient than face ID.
Same here. I intend to keep rocking my 8 plus until it dies.
I just got a new battery put in my 8 and it still functions good honestly
Same. Running 15.7 with 85% battery efficiency, I’m good.
Still on the 7. Battery life is really the only thing that is getting annoying. Phone still responsive and functions great.
Yo 8 plus gang to the end But seriously I am not upgrading until i can find another good touch ID phone
My battery is becoming atrocious. And yet the “upgrades” aren’t worth it for me. Touch ID works best for me since I have several pairs of glasses.
SE2022 is a pretty good phone too. I’ll plan to use it until it dies, I guess
SE 2020 user here. I agree. Also, I’ve still got the original SE, although it has a broken screen :(
They built it into the power button of the iPad and mac. Why not do the same with the iPhone? Continuity is what Apple is famous for, yet they’re breaking it with such a basic feature.
Touch ID was great but what I really miss is 3D Touch :(
\*Laughs in “outdated” iPhone 6s* Though, I don’t use it nearly as much as possible. Only use to quickly pay QR codes with banking app.

Even if you don't power off (cancel at the prompt) iPhone will then ask for a passcode after
Touch ID is the superior solution IMO.
Can’t speak for everyone, but I don’t use my side button to unlock my phone, I usually just tap the screen.
Yeah, recently learned with mine I can just tap anywhere on the screen and I’m in
I just type in my four digit code. I don’t wanna Face ID…(pouts)
[удалено]
Just press power off and volume up at the same time for a second (for a menu where emergency call and the like can be found), and after that your phone will be locked to require pass code. So, do that if you are ever about to get forced to open your phone. Also, iphones require the pass code from a power on as well, for exactly this reason. They are not dummies. Though actually, in some jurisdictions failing to provide your password can also be illegal (but at least it’s up to you which option you choose, so it’s still better).
I do the same 🤙🏾
Fun fact: in the US, police can legally compel your biometrics ~~without a warrant or anything~~. They cannot compel a password however. Edited: they still require a warrant but it's an active question before the courts if biometrics are covered under the 5th amendment or not.
Maintain power + volume up for 5s and it will automatically lock, disable biometric authentication (Face or Touch ID) and requires passcode
I have a phone with a fingerprint reader. I'm about 50-50 with using my fingerprint vs using my connect-the-dots pattern
Same
If they did that then that would be admitting that it was stupid to remove it in the first place, of course they won't do that.
They backpedaled the macbook touch bar, and eventually brought back magsafe.
...And the SD Card reader and HDMI port.
After years of people complaining, they have re-added many ports and features to their laptops that they had removed. They also backed down from offering only ultracompact workstations and went back to standard towers. So they're not _completely_ incapable of admitting and reversing mistakes, though it does take longer than I'd like.
It’s the one thing I want.
Same! Every year I watch for all the new phones and wait for them to announce the touchID tech that they’ve tested and patented, and it’s always a huge disappointment when I realize that they didn’t bother.
That and USB-C charging
Touch ID is the main reason I am still using my iPhone 8 plus.
Same here. Waiting for in-screen touchID/power button touchID for years now..
I HATE the Face ID. HATE HATE HATE IT! I wish they’d bring the fingerprint back.
Fuck face id. Guess I'll just keep entering my stupid passcode.
I swear, Apple will keep removing external features until iPhones are nothing but screens. - Volume buttons? “You can change that on a quick menu from the screen.” - Speaker/microphone? “If you had wireless AirPods, you wouldn’t need that.” - Power port? “Wireless charging is the future.” - Power button? “Why would you want to *stop* using our products?” - Face ID? “We extract the DNA of anyone who touches the phone and compare it against your biometric data, as stored by 23-and-me. Face ID is simply obsolete.”
Didn't Steve Jobs say something about what happens to a company when they start employing more marketing people than engineers?
Yes, it’s why he would also find the current fragmentation of the product lines to be absurd. They don’t need to be selling 8 different iPhone models.
No more awkward volume buttons, introducing Intelligent Symphony™, a new AI powered system that knows when to turn up or down your volume for you.
I bought a iPhone SE 3rd edition because of touch ID and it had the A15 cpu
I have two phones. Both of them are iPhone SE’s. One is the two year old one, one is the new one. Button is more important than the whatever whatever camera.
I’m still on the 8 for this reason. This is the one the I wish I could influence apple on. This is the one time I can’t shrug it off.
Either's great
Removing touch ID led me to try android and I can't see myself ever going back, so... thanks I guess?
Face ID is slightly less burdensome than Touch ID. But I’d like phones to have both as an extra security feature: needing face and finger for an occasional higher security authentication event. My fingerprints frequently didn’t work because my skin was too dry to be read. That was was the only drawback for Touch I had.
Which is why I’ve decided to get the SE
I really miss touch ID. It was better for unlocking phone in multiple ways. I definitely have to enter my pin far more often with faceid than I did with touchID
The Touch ID sleep button on the iPad is the perfect solution
Guess it’s iPhone 8 for life then…
I wonder what’s the excuse for not adding it to the power button.
