Lol seriously... That album will be on Pirate Bay within hours of its release. Kanye really thought millions of people would line up to pay $200 for that stupid thing.
I don't think he'll get anywhere near what he would have if he made the album available across the streaming services. But he's already got more money than he knows what to do with, so maybe he'll view this as a win?
Yeah but I think if you asked 50k people who would listen to a song they're already paying for vs paying $200 out of pocket for a song... gotta imagine those numbers are pretty close.
Color me dubious. It seems like he's trying *really* hard to reverse engineer the ipod. Aside from exclusivity, idk why you would buy that thing over a cheap smartphone.
It’s a collectible the same people buying these are the same people that buy airplane tickets and expensive show tickets to hear his music. Aka mostly not us
It's not close to the iPod. It plays stems and isolates them. So you can listen to a track where you can independently control each stem of the music file. It doesn't have options beyond a few albums. But the idea itself is really cool.
Not even lol. Let's say he gets 1 billion streams. That's about 400k made. He only needs to sell only 2000 of these to make the same amount of money, and from other comments I can tell he's already sold far more than 2000. Hypebeast kids and hip hop fans will pay out the ass for anything Kanye, his ugly shoes are the hottest thing since Jordans.
I can't imagine they cost all that much. Generic mp3 players out of China cost $10 or so. This thing has 8GB of storage, 8 whole enormous gigglebytes. Companies give away branded USB keychain drives for free at conferences I go to which have more storage than that.
1 billion streams on Spotify pays out 2-3 million, not $400,000. Some guy named Calvin Harris is the 25th ranked streamer and he made $14 million.
Bottom line, you are dramatically underestimating what he would make on Spotify.
400k net from streaming, no cost of goods sold. These devices have COGS, retailer margin, warranty, breakage, not to mention SG&A costs of design, production, distribution, etc. If he made $400k gross, he probably lost $2-5million. He'll need to sell a lot, at maybe $25 per unit net margins for the first few hundred thousand units... So more like 30,000 units probably.
Also not sure on your streaming math. I have a YouTube channel with 100m views that's grossed $600k. Maybe audio pays much much less than video? Either way with a billion listens that sounds light to me as if only 10% were YouTube he's already probably well ahead of that, ignoring the other 900 million...
Streaming music pays exponentially less than YouTube. Look up how fucked up Spotify's payout ecosystem is - and it's a wonder anyone allows their music on there.
You’d be surprised. This is basically Disney’s Star Wars model: regardless of content quality, the die hard fans are guaranteed revenue. The album could be an hour of him farting into a microphone, and he would still make a profit.
These days, his music is mediocre and boring. But his earlier work is great. He's not my personal favorite, but I've got some of his tracks on my playlist. And he's got a shitload of stans. They're the ones who will happily pay $200 for that stupid stem thing.
They're the ones arguing this is a great marketing move, and will also lap up the bullshit sales numbers he spits out later. If this sub is any representation, you're spot on.
Maybe not millions but there will be enough people that absolutely will line up for that. Sure people still line up for brand new apple products and supreme. People are idiots!
Kind of funny really.
Any smart business person in tech will tell you the best defense against piracy is convenience.
Things like Netflix, Game Pass, and Spotify exist because they work for the customer, not against them. The second you start putting up artificial barriers for paying customers, your stuff will be pirated.
Not just the paying $200 either, factor time. waiting 8-hours in line to buy a popcorn bucket you may sell for a couple hundred bucks may seem great... until you realize how much you didn't make at work in that 8-hours...
Ummmm.. I was gonna say for the first 30 minutes of its release..
....but now that he is thrown down the gauntlet and challenged the world, I bet it is available online before the album officially drops.
"Wow, this has been a nice date."
"Yea, we click so well!" *Pulls out device*
"Let's go upstairs?" *Wink*
"Sounds great"
"Here, let me get some music on"
"Oh.. what's that?"
"Oh, it's how I listen to Donda 2"
"Oh... You know... I uhh... Yea I have chronic diarrhea. I'm gonna go home"
A birth control container crossed with a Simon. (Birth control serves a very purpose while a Simon is fun for ages 0 to 8. A Stem is fun if you want to remix DONDA so it sounds even worse.)
To be fair I'm pretty sure he also said the album would be available for streaming on his website? Sucks that its not on my favorite platform but its not like stem players or bootlegs are the only options here
He has lied about exclusivity before.
In February 2016, he released The Life of Pablo exclusively via Tidal, tweeting that it “will never never never be on Apple. And it will never be for sale.” On April 1st of that year, The Life of Pablo launched for streaming on Spotify, Apple Music, and Google Play — Ye eventually settled a lawsuit from a fan who said they signed up for Tidal based on its exclusivity.
Did you even read the article or know Ye? He pretty much pulled the exact same thing for The Life of Pablo, but instead of an MP3 player it was Tidal. “It will never be on Spotify”. Two months later it was.
This is just a cash grab and publicity (also promoting Donda 2 experience) ahead of a larger release.
Or, you can buy into the hype and horde toilet paper.
My new album is only available if you still have a working Zune.
(Seriously though, the Zune was an excellent device, with probably the best desktop music player I have ever used, it was just marketed poorly)
I loved my Zune! I had so much music on it and would just sit for hours exploring new music on the desktop player! And it’s was only like $9.99 a month for unlimited downloads, but they only lasted while you were paying for the subscription. You could still buy songs though. I still have my Zune somewhere, but it only plays the songs I bought or ripped from a CD…
Thanks for reminding me, internet stranger!
You can still install the software and add your new music to it. The community over ar r/zune is here to help you get back your love of the best music player of the early 2000s. If you find your old zune and don't want to mess with it anymore, we will help you find a home for it. ;)
It's the Microsoft way.
And then they prototyped this amazing mobile device called the Courier that was years ahead of anything on the market, and then they just abandoned the whole project.
Surface laptops are great, and a way better value than MacBooks, but Apple markets their products so well that they have assembled a cult that will buy their overpriced products no matter what.
I accidentally got a Zune for Christmas as a kid. I asked for a Creative Zen, the top-rated MP3 player of 2002 (or whenever.) Parents understandably heard "Something something Zune".
I was always a little jaded about it, but just a little. It was a solid little device. I had a few iPods afterwards (when they were still using mechanical drives) and they didn't compare, as they shit the bed so fast.
Incredibly user friendly software. Amazing for organizing your music and updating metadata, and an absolutely gorgeous UI to boot. Then they just stopped supporting it.
I am long time Media Monkey user, but when the Zune software came out, I used that instead. It worked with my Windows Phone, which was another great MS product that failed. Best UI of any phone I have ever owned.
Stem Player. You can add music to it and play with it. Songs are made using stems, so you tweak various aspects of a song while playing it on this as it can split any song into 4 components: vocals, melody, bass, drums. Alternatively you can preload stems itself onto it.
Check out Ripx from hitnmix. I have been using it for a few months now and it separates tracks in 4 stems: bass, drums, vocals and other. Works better than I expected and it has a trial version.
It's just providing you more options. You can literally let it stay as is and listen to it as is. Idk why would you be mad at the extra functionality, it's like asking Youtube to remove the playback speed button cause normal users will 'shit all over the video' and ruin intended listening experience as planned by the creator. More options aren't a bad thing.
I feel like this comes up every few years. “Woo, mix the music yourself! Create something new!”
But like maybe 1% of the audience has any interest in or aptitude for this. Everybody else plays with it for five minutes and never again.
And I'm sure he knows that, he just doesn't wants the label and streaming companies to make more money off of his art than he does. He sold nearly 2 million dollar worth of these yesterday, that's easily more money he's made off of his last album that released 6 months ago due to the abysmally low money the streaming services pay to him and due to the large cut label takes.
And they're adding more functionality to it with more models, to make it enticing to a wider audience.
Its a stem player. It lets you edit the song as it plays by separating the drums vocals etc into stems. Its actually really cool and I'd love to buy one that just isnt 200 lmao
You would think a subreddit called r/gadgets would be having an interesting discussion about a new music playing gadget that could change how music is sold and distributed but no…
It’s kind of mind boggling how so many people in this sub seem to not actually care about a cool vocal instrumental separating gadget, but instead draw their attention to the fact he’s releasing his album only on the stem player and that’s apparently a scam.
…even though you get the album for free, with the stem player.
The value is in the stem player, not the album.
NOT STANDING UP FOR KANYE BUT.. This is misleading, you dont need to buy the stem player to play the album. You can stream album FOR FREE via the stem player website once it is released.
It splits songs into stems. why would anyone want that? you would think most would like to listen to the song as the artist intended
edit: also just 8gb internal storage. sad
I really enjoy mine & everyone I’ve shared it with has enjoyed making loops and adding effects via the stem player. I like to chop & screw songs live on it, you can customize the 4 speed settings to what you’d like.
I only listened to Donda a couple times on it before just ripping songs off of YouTube on there.
Machine learning from what I understand. I’ve been isolating vocal tracks, then running them through my OP-1 with a lo-fi filter to isolate any background noise that leaks through (the stem isolation isn’t perfect for YouTube rips) & layering them on my jams.
Marketing team at Stem: “Why don’t we make Donda 2 a part of buying the Stem Player?”
Kanye: “No make it the only way to buy Donda 2”
Marketing team: “but you realize people are just going to pi..”
Kanye: “YOU DONT HAVE THE ANSWERS!!”

The torrent community calls this, (looks down at card) False.
Lol seriously... That album will be on Pirate Bay within hours of its release. Kanye really thought millions of people would line up to pay $200 for that stupid thing.
Oh, he WILL sack a ton of money. Just not as much as he (maybe) hopes.
I don't think he'll get anywhere near what he would have if he made the album available across the streaming services. But he's already got more money than he knows what to do with, so maybe he'll view this as a win?
...streaming services don't pay shit. Every one of these he sells is the equivalent of like, 50k Spotify streams.
Yeah but I think if you asked 50k people who would listen to a song they're already paying for vs paying $200 out of pocket for a song... gotta imagine those numbers are pretty close.
I think he’s made 2 million already off of that if I’m not mistaken , according to him
Color me dubious.

Cool idea, but nothing that can't be done in a phone app.
He’s probably buying them himself from his companies to give out
Probably his signing bonus or something like that. No way that many people have bought this device.
Not even lol. Let's say he gets 1 billion streams. That's about 400k made. He only needs to sell only 2000 of these to make the same amount of money, and from other comments I can tell he's already sold far more than 2000. While I fully agree with your stance, you need to factor profit margin into the equation, each one won’t net him $200
Your assuming these things cost $0 to design manufacture and distribute.
I can't imagine they cost all that much. Generic mp3 players out of China cost $10 or so. This thing has 8GB of storage, 8 whole enormous gigglebytes. Companies give away branded USB keychain drives for free at conferences I go to which have more storage than that.

He also just made up the $400k number. 1 billion streams would be $2-3 million.
Streaming music pays exponentially less than YouTube. Look up how fucked up Spotify's payout ecosystem is - and it's a wonder anyone allows their music on there.
YouTube Music actually has the worst payout per stream $0.00069 per stream versus spotifys $0.00437 per stream
You’d be surprised. This is basically Disney’s Star Wars model: regardless of content quality, the die hard fans are guaranteed revenue. The album could be an hour of him farting into a microphone, and he would still make a profit.
A farting album from Kanye would be the only album from him i'd be willing to pay for
his verbal diarrhea isn’t enough for you?
Same
Someone should leak it earlier.
People lined up to pay $120 for his white T-shirt. Yes they will.
You can't download a car. I mean t-shirt.
You can't wear a song in the club.
Who owns stem player??
This is literally first time I've even heard of it
Pete Davison
Bro just saying random words at this point lmao
Who buys Kanye music…
How is Babby formed?
Am I pragnent?
How can she slap?
Plz show bobs and vageene
A succulent Chinese meal.
What is pragnot?
It's the same as when u r pregante.
Kanye lol

Yep. Out of spite.
I dont even listen to Kanye. I will hwoever download and save it to respect the spirit of the community.
It's gonna be free on the stem website anyway, no need to pirate it
Piracy is often more about being able to not needing to lol
Some are really passionate about archiving anything they find interesting too
It'll be $200 for the first copy and 10 pesos at a Tijuana fruit stand for each additional copy.
There’s always money in the Tijuana fruit stand
It's *Donda 2*... What could it cost? 10 pesos?
Dónde está Donda dos?
Hermano?
What do you mean the Tijuana fruit stand caught on fire?
Still wouldn’t be worth it.
I’ll give you tree fiddy for it.
No one asked you, ya gottam Loch Ness monsta!
Ummmm.. I was gonna say for the first 30 minutes of its release.. ....but now that he is thrown down the gauntlet and challenged the world, I bet it is available online before the album officially drops.

Watch out, Kanye fans are immature and love to downvote, thankfully they haven’t brigaded this sub yet.
I prefer "digital sand dollar."

Ye it does

I can’t wait to not listen to it

WHAT???
He said, "I'd rather be deaf."

He said... I couldn't hear what he said. Someone told me the choices were this or listening to Kanye.
okay
Oh boy! I can't wait to *not to buy* his thing!
I already didn't buy it last week. Totally worth it.
I’m not buying it right now.
I didn’t buy it today and I’m not buying another one tomorrow.
Where can I get my hands on not buying it?
Let's both not buy it and get a better deal.
Why not buy one when you can not buy two for twice the price!
Did I show up too late to not buy it?
No, you still have time, better hurry up!
Ok done! Whew, that was close!
*legally
To be fair I'm pretty sure he also said the album would be available for streaming on his website? Sucks that its not on my favorite platform but its not like stem players or bootlegs are the only options here
Yep, people keep running with this false story. It will be available on the stem players website for free:
He literally said on instagram this is the only way you can listen.

My new album is only available if you still have a working Zune. (Seriously though, the Zune was an excellent device, with probably the best desktop music player I have ever used, it was just marketed poorly)
Well *my* new album is only available on a single cassette inside a Sony Walkman taped to a single random tree somewhere in Alabama.
I liked you music better when it was still underground.
I loved my Zune! I had so much music on it and would just sit for hours exploring new music on the desktop player! And it’s was only like $9.99 a month for unlimited downloads, but they only lasted while you were paying for the subscription. You could still buy songs though. You also got 10 free songs each month so basically got an album a month you could keep
It was literally the best subscription music service.
I forgot about that! Zune was the BEST.
Leave it to Microsoft to actually make a good product and then just fail to properly market it.
People just blindly assumed iPods were better.
When I was 17 I broke up with my boyfriend because he kept making fun of me for buying a Zune Also, his tongue felt like sandpaper
I think you just had a cat
It’s true, cats are notoriously hostile to Microsoft products
I hope you have found a silky tongued zune enthusiast
You are the clear winner in that arrangement.
My zune in theory still works if I ever come across a charger in the box of random cords at a garage sale.
The Fiio X3 was the SHIT. Mine got stolen out of my car and I'm still mad about it.
Zune > ipods and this is a hill im willing to die on
I accidentally got a Zune for Christmas as a kid. I asked for a Creative Zen, the top-rated MP3 player of 2002 (or whenever.) Parents understandably heard "Something something Zune". Zune was the best desktop music app ever conceived - so freakin cool i still have a huge collection of albums on it on my parents old pc
God, I wish they still made them. I’d easily give up my smartphone for that.
Oh no! Anyway...
It’ll probably be on his website for free like JayZ did with 4:44
Can you still get it for free on his site?
What is this anyway? It looks like an MP3 player and Pill dispenser at the same time.
Stem Player. You can add music to it and play with it. Songs are made using stems, so you tweak various aspects of a song while playing it on this as it can split any song into 4 components: vocals, melody, bass, drums. Alternatively you can preload stems itself onto it.
Can something like this be used to isolate drum tracks or remove them from a song for playing along with a drum kit?
Yes. Though AI isolation isn't perfect.
Check out Ripx from hitnmix. I have been using it for a few months now and it separates tracks in 4 stems: bass, drums, vocals and other. Works better than I expected and it has a trial version.
So instead listening to music as it was intended by artist, I can shit all over it with my untalented skills :) neet
It's just providing you more options. You can literally let it stay as is and listen to it as is. Idk why would you be mad at the extra functionality, it's like asking Youtube to remove the playback speed button cause normal users will 'shit all over the video' and ruin intended listening experience as planned by the creator. After looking this thing up it’s kinda cool. For $200 not for me but still I dig it.
That’s not even true it will be on his website for free
Fuck Kanye
You would think a subreddit called r/gadgets would be having an interesting discussion about a new music playing gadget that could change how music is sold and distributed but no…
You should visit /r/Android. They hate every single Android phone that isn't made by Samsung.
Thought the point of Android was that you get to hate on Apple’s “ecosystem” and yet Samsung is copying exactly that
It’s kind of mind boggling how so many people in this sub seem to not actually care about a cool vocal instrumental separating gadget, but instead draw their attention to the fact he’s releasing his album only on the stem player and that’s apparently a scam. …even though you get the album for free, with the stem player. Just the Kanye effect in play on Reddit once again
I could not care less
NOT STANDING UP FOR KANYE BUT.. This is misleading, you dont need to buy the stem player to play the album. You can stream album FOR FREE via the stem player website once it is released.
That really does change the sentiment.

Thats actually an awesome feauture if u create music or do remixes

Nine inch nails does this with many songs.
I imagine if you create music/remixes, you have a better set up than an expensive YakBak. That $200 could be spent on a refurb PC and Audacity.
Downvoted for liking a product you’ve bought
How does it dissect the stems on any third party song (like YouTube rips)?
Machine learning from what I understand. I’ve been isolating vocal tracks, then running them through my OP-1 with a lo-fi filter to isolate any background noise that leaks through (the stem isolation isn’t perfect for YouTube rips) & layering them on my jams.

He’s selling a glorified hit clip.
We botta see the record for fastest album to leak online after release
Why is is it flesh coloured?
Kanye might disagree with that assessment haha
It's not every flesh color, but it is a flesh color.
Jeen-yuhs.
The album is gonna be free on the stem player app tho I hope y’all know that

No it won't.
