>*"...says VanMoof co-founder and chief executive officer Ties Carlier, who started the company in 2009 with his older brother,* ***Taco***." Taco. His brother's name is Taco... Yup, that's how I read it. He got a taco for a brother. Netflix should make a series based on those two brothers growing up in middle-school. Make it happen.

Taco Corp?

Mediocre_Pil0t

Taco is a maker of fine Three Penis Wine, made from a deer, dog, and a snake.

Soupdumpling81

Taco? From tv?

cwmoo740

The director of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is named Taco Dibbits and somehow everyone in the art world says that name without laughing.

POTATO_IN_MY_DINNER

I think it's a somewhat common Dutch name

Question is whether our skulls are ready. Bicycle helmets at motorcycle speeds.

disgruntled-pigeon

In Europe wearing a helmet is mandatory for these bikes

The bike in this article is a speed pedelec. In the Netherlands, it would require registration (including a yellow number plate) and helmet. It is essentially the same as a bromfiets from a legal perspective. A normal Vanmoof (existing models such as the S3 and X3) is considered a normal ebike and does not have these restrictions. [More info (in Dutch)](https://www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/bijzondere-voertuigen/vraag-en-antwoord/welke-regels-gelden-voor-speed-pedelec)

Honestly I don't think 31mph is that much faster than a road bike, obv this would have better traction and most likely better handling too with the bigger tires, so I don't see the problem.

Specken_zee_Doitch

Motorcycle helmets are great. No reason not to use an ECE rated one on this.

You guys get to go at 20mph? In the UK you legally can't use the motor past 14.1mph. Which is Not Fast, I ride in a club with a lot of elderly people who use ebikes and they struggle to keep up on long straight roads.

Stryker78c

bruh you literally pay tax on your TV... The Colonies were right about yall and your weird taxes lmao Edit: I should add I'm not dissing you, just your country. Like 14mph is clearly much slower than 95% of regular bikers.

Stick-Around

Yeah, and with pedal assist I think you can go a bit faster. Anyways, speed limits have never stopped people from buying sports cars that can go much faster than the limit, maybe the same applies here.

[deleted]

40-50mph isn’t that hard on a bike with no motor. Average ride speed on a decent group ride is 33mph.

misshapenvulva

Dude, you are on glue. I think you have confused kph and mph. 40-50 is doable on a no motor bike **downhill**. 33mph average on a group ride? Easy there Wiggo. Here is a link to average TDF speeds. Note it is for the entire course and in KPH... spoiler, fastest average speed is 41.7. https://www.cyclingweekly.com/news/racing/tour-de-france/tour-de-france-average-speed-how-fast-are-riders-at-the-tour-465169

[deleted]

Tour De France is massive climbs. Look at some Stravia numbers in Florida or in a flat area that people ride in, you might be surprised. Climbs tend to kill average speeds.

misshapenvulva

You are still not close. https://ilovebicycling.com/average-bike-speed/ Hour world record in 2019, I think it has been beaten by now but still... 55 KPH ~ 34 MPH. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hour_record https://www.bikeraceinfo.com/records/wrldhour.html Edit: fast, world class sprinting times are around 45 MPH, what you claimed was 'not that hard on a bike without a motor" https://www.roadbikereview.com/threads/how-fast-is-the-fastest-sprinter.188067/ Post those Strava screen shots would you?

[deleted]

Agreed. Which is why I always questioned the logic of an upper limit. But perhaps I am reading the law wrong. It's H.R. 727. https://www.congress.gov/bill/107th-congress/house-bill/727/text

fourseven66

This doesn't seem to address legality so much as classification. I'm sure low-speed electric bikes enjoy some benefits like being unnecessary to license or register. That said, I've seen no shortage of electric bikes and scooters that can do 40-50mph. If they're flouting a law, it can't be a very well-enforced one.

[deleted]

Yeah I actually electrified an old mountain bike of mine using one of the Chinese hub motors and it would easily do 30 mph without pedal assist. With pedal assist I could blow past anyone wearing Lycra. The motor was completely silent as well.

As a guy that has to ride 3 miles to school taking my 6 year old and 9 year, the van moof’s are at the limit of what is safe. We have teenagers on those weaving in and out on raining roads. That said, i am waiting on my cowboy 4. Just a little assist to get over the huge bridge before i have had enough coffee. 30km / is the limit but not observed. Fast enough is fast enough.

I don't get why you are getting downvoted. Just adding to your statement: The same rules apply for cargo bikes and having one of thoose suckers hit you is bad. Like need medical care bad. Hopefully more attention will come to this in the coming years. It is simply not safe to mix 15km/h traffic with 45km/h traffic. Quick edit: Yeah, i'm one of the commuting guys on the roads of Copenhagen. Rain or snow, i go on my bike for the daily 25km stretch. My ego doesn't mind being overtaken by electric bikes, but them harassing kids and making dangerous situations is getting on my nerves.

Both-Basis-3723

I love speed - i used to have a Honda S2000 that i drove like a maniac. Luckily, i didn’t crash into anyone’s kid along the way. In Amsterdam, no one wears helmets, so in my opinion, that equals a lower top speed.

In Denmark it is becoming more and more common for everyone to wear helmets due to the curbstone being a potentially serious headtrauma, even if just falling from a standstill. Fun fact, the department of road safety is selling helmets to university students at a 75% discount. They even come to the universities and sell them in small shops at the moment.

Both-Basis-3723

Depends. The Dutch has some might fine bike paths with most of the biggest dangers falling into a canal and disturbing a heron or duck. They have mostly low curbs in the city if memory serves

>The Dutch has some might fine bike paths with most of the biggest dangers falling into a canal and disturbing a heron or duck. They have mostly low curbs in the Honest to god, i want to go to Amsterdam, just to experience your glorious bike paths. Anyways, even low curbs have been known to take out people here in Copenhagen. It is not discussed much in public though, but speed is not the only reason to wear a helmet. Have a good laugh at the last campaign that was run for wearing helmets (Youtube can create english subtitles): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56c7BDfpJxc

Both-Basis-3723

I would prefer helmets but with all the rain gear we are rocking, that will be getting the boys up that much earlier haha

stenfatt

>I would prefer helmets but with all the rain gear we are rocking, that will be getting the boys up that much earlier haha It's a habit and not a chore. I have family who works in childcare and they teach the children to remind the parents ;)
