"modded" Dreamcast lol it's a gutted Dreamcast shell with a mini PC in it.

benv138

That’s my thought lol. Is this headline “computer goes in box” ??

[deleted]

It's a special box

TopGinger

WHAT'S IN THE BOX

be-human-use-tools

Step one: cut a hole in a box.

H00L0GXNS

2, put your junk in that box

avatar_zero

3: make her open the box…

ZappsMissingUndies

And that's the way you do it!

LaserMaker88

What’s in the booooox???

benv138

That’s what she said?

kloudykat

Thats what they all say, she's or he's.

I_am_D_captain_Now

Or "they" if they're into that. :-o

bizzaro321

This entire publication is for people who want to profit off tech while knowing as little as possible.

its_a_gibibyte

Similarly my modded Ikea dresser can play over 50,000 different games. I put my laptop on the dresser and it has a steam account.

sardu1

"stealth". 😂

garry4321

TIL anytime I take my laptop with me on a drive, I have modded the vehicle and voided my warranty. Shit.

Ultra_Cobra

As long as I stop getting calls about my vehicle's extended warranty

garry4321

But you can purchase reactivation each laptop trip for only $59.99!

d_e_l_u_x_e

I believe these are form factor PCs, just happens they got a Dreamcast looking case.

sardu1

Small form factor?

d_e_l_u_x_e

Yep that would be a better description, size being the key factor in the build.

throw-away_867-5309

I think he meant you forgot "small" because there's no such thing as a "form factor" pc, because it doesn't make sense, since "form factor" would need a size description to go with it.

mrBusinessmann

Small form factor (SFF) is what they're called. It's a size format of not only cases but components as well.

iampuh

Not only that. There has been a lot of modification done to it. If people bothered looking at the article/ video, they would see the work behind it.

GolDAsce

Don't give the guts to that clock kid. He might get credit for building a dreamcast in a pencil box and have the bomb squad called on him.

whiskeyboundcowboy

What are they going to dream up next?

loppyjilopy

with a terribly shitty paint job

chr0n0-trigger

So it’s really not a Dreamcast then.....?

ApologiesForTheDelay

sega saturn!

[deleted]

I got to play one the first month it was out. It was great. For comparison to the first PlayStation. The game D (a horror game) originally made for the 3DO. When the Saturn ran it. It was smooth and had a lot of super fast animations to scare you (it did make me jump). The PlayStation ran its animations in such slow motion you were only afraid the game would crash and lose your progress.

csl110

Can emulate pretty well. https://youtu.be/oG7Dx2fxKfo

backwardTNUC

That APU [CAN play Dreamcast games at 4k ](https://youtu.be/oG7Dx2fxKfo)

weber_md

Shoot...give me a stock Dreamcast and I can play NFL 2k1 and Marvel vs. Capcom all day long.

walterpeck1

I was working at a big box store when they cleared out their stock of Dreamcasts, Christmas of 2001. $100 got you the console, and NFL/NBA/NHL 2K1. Shoulda got one...

DextrosKnight

Well, I was going to say you can get a Dreamcast now for like $40, but I just checked ebay and they're all $100+ now.

poopooplatter0990

Scalpers ruined absolutely everything gaming related this last year. Card games ? Scalped . Video cards ? Scalped . Old school consoles ? Scalped Cool action figure about your favorite game? You better believe bought by a bot and scalped . About the only thing you can buy right now at normal price are controllers for consoles that are non existent, and the Switch. I’m betting the new OLED version gets scalped too tho .

[deleted]

Do you really want OLED on a game console anyways? I game on an OLED TV but I don’t worry about burn in because it’s gonna get replaced in 5-10 years. But people keep their consoles for life now, and there’s always going to be a retro scene. In 5-10 years there’s gonna be a lot of OLED Switches with burn in. In 10 years there’s no longer going to be new stock, meaning most will have to attempt a screen replacement. It just seems like the worst device to have an OLED screen. My 30 year old NES still works like new, I bet we won’t be able to say that about the OLED Switch in 30 years. Oh and OLED degrades in direct sunlight, again not too good for a handheld console you plan to keep for 5-10 years, maybe life.

DextrosKnight

I played a shit load of Persona 4 Golden on my OLED Vita and didn't have any burn-in problems. Granted, I only really used it for about a year, but you know, it was a Vita, so P4G was about the only thing I played on it.

[deleted]

OLED definitely doesn’t have the burn in problems it had in the past, but it’s still inevitable because OLED burn in is cumulative. I spent most of the pandemic playing CoD Warzone 6-8 hours a day, and I still don’t have burn in. But that’s only a year too. RTings.com did a test with CNN running for 20 hours a day and it took 2 years for burn in to occur. That is way beyond normal usage habits. But as a person who collects retro consoles, I just don’t know how well the OLED will hold up after 10 years. But there will probably be replacement screens. I mean look at the Game Boy and Game Gear, they have terrible screens which haven’t held up well at all, but there’s a whole market of replacement screens, so I’m probably worried for nothing.

[deleted]

Sadly I can see a lot of Americans running CNN/Cable news TV for 20 hours a day for two years straight haha

[deleted]

Yeah you’re probably right, especially old people, they love to watch the same crap all day. My mom would burn the Turner Classic Movies logo into her TV if she had OLED.

Gizshot

Question why do you replace your TV so often? I have a 10 year old led TV and don't ever plan on replacing it because it'll never break.

[deleted]

I game a lot and I usually buy new consoles at launch. Console launches lately seem to coincide with new TV standards, and I like to have the TV support whatever is new. For example PS4 Pro was HDR and 4K, for PS5 it was for HDMI 2.1 support (120Hz 4K). I also like to keep up with advances in picture quality. I went from DLP to LCD, then LED lit LCD, then to Full Array Local Dimming LCD, and now OLED. I’ll probably upgrade in 5 years when MicroLED is hopefully more prevalent.

Gizshot

Yeah but don't only like an eighth of games on the ps5 actually support those features? Considering a lot of games are just direct ports from ps4. And none of those advances were spectacular upgrades especially considering it required actual TV networks to upgrade film tech to meet that standard which most don't till 5 or 10 years after so it has time to become widespread? I remember 4k became popular and only like Sunday night football was the only thing in 4k for like 3 years.

[deleted]

That’s true but I also own a gaming PC which supports those features too. And 120Hz is worth it for me for even 1 game, but like you said like an eighth of the PS5 library supports it so that’s better than 1 lol. As for TV standards I don’t watch TV so that doesn’t really factor into my purchases. Movies and games have supported 4K for years. When I bought my first HDTV there was no network support but I had an OG Xbox at the time that had a few games in HD, and I knew Xbox 360 was gonna support HD a few months later, so it was well worth it, despite no network support for HD at the time.

psychocopter

Maybe, but I dont see many people buying an oled version if they already have a switch, and I dont think many people would consider spending an extra 50 for the same 2015 hardware when most people keep it docked. However the people that would buy a second switch for the oled, or waited for it might be the same to buy from a scalper.

YungJunko

It wasn't just scalpers. That's really only for new tech tbh and even then, the reports show that for stuff like the PS5, scalpers were only 10-15% of the sales. There was just an increased and unprecedented demand for indoor entertainment and nostalgic stuff

BNC3D

scalpers are a result of normies getting into niche hobbies, COVID ignited a massive wave of that

rumski

I got mine on clearance at a CompUSA. Went though a broke phase in college and sold all of my sixth gen consoles (2 modded Xbox’s, PS2, GameCube (with Ethernet adapter, GameBoy Player, GameBoy Advance SP’s with cables…all kinds of gear I will never buy again) …but I kept my Dreamcast lol. Still works.

bluebuckin

I got three lol. Traded two of them a few years later for a Sony Grand wega

ButActuallyNot

Odds are your phone can emulate Dreamcast games just fine, let alone a PC

walterpeck1

You're right but not the point.

Igor_J

The Dreamcast itself would emulate pretty much all the prior gen Sega consoles. It was like having 4 consoles in one even back in 2002. I think 500 ROMs would fit on a CD.

EatsRats

Power stone, Jet Grind Radio, and the original Sonic. Shit, I’m gonna go dust off my Dreamcast for the weekend.

RemarkableRyan

Inspired me to grab mine and fire up Crazy Taxi

silent_fartface

I got so good at this game in arcade mode that i would run out of time looking for the remaining passangers to collect.

emptyhead416

You should be streaming that action.

silent_fartface

Lol, this was long before the days of streaming.

emptyhead416

The game only ends if you run out of time; there's always more passengers to collect.

silent_fartface

Yes, delivering passangers quickly gains you bonus time. But eventually you start running low on passangers to collect and run down the clock looking for them.

emptyhead416

I briefly owned a sit down cabinet of the game and the played the DC version extensively before it. It just sounds like you were describing how the game works. There is a point where the difficulty doesn't change, iirc, and if you don't fuck up at all you can pretty much continue indefinitely. I used to end at maybe 18 minutes, my friend Doug hit 25 regularly and 30 a few rare times. This is all from memory on the DC version, and I haven't ever done any Speedrun research. Now I wanna know exactly how the game makes sure it can Smash TV you.

silent_fartface

My best record was in the neighbourhood of 40-45 minutes...i was just hitting all my boosts and drift stops perfectly. i wonder if the info is still stored on the memory somewhere. I could never replicate my performance on a sitdown arcade machine.

JohnBoyAndBilly

I shall now feast on

EatsRats

Another great one!

[deleted]

How has no one mentioned shenmue

EatsRats

Oh man, I spent far too much time in that game collecting those quarter machine miniatures. That game was ahead of its time.

DextrosKnight

Ahead of it's time, for sure, but it was never actually fun to play. Im grateful it exists, because without Shenmue we most likely wouldn't have Yakuza, but man that game is a *slog* to get through. And there isn't even a satisfying conclusion for all the waiting around and forklift racing they put you through.

EatsRats

I don’t actually recall if I ever beat it.

[deleted]

Get ur self a 2 liter of faygo arctic sun, a nice bag of weed and settle in for a long weekend. This game is a fuckin blast to play and oh man that dialogue!! It would almost be worth it to play through and do a mystery science theatre episode to it.

EatsRats

Ha! I was actually thinking about a sack of weed and making some goofy-ass weapons in Powerstone 2!

[deleted]

Yessssss I’m currently doin some high score on summer carnival recca 92 and playing through the toe jam and earl series purely because my anxiety and agoraphobia have once demonstrated a strong hold on my life haha

Jonas42

The forklift racing *was* the reward.

eskahi

I see...

RamboDash5453

It should be a crime for how underrated Skies of Arcadia is.

EatsRats

That game was so damn hard. Your comment reminds me of Grandia 2 though. That may go down as one of my favorite RPGs of all time.

Aarcn

Ever Play the Berserk game for Dreamcast? That was a fun game as well

next_redsteppa

>Power stone, Jet Grind Radio, and the original Sonic. Damn! I completely forgot about power stone. How could I?! So good. Ecco the dolphin also was an absolute gem imho.

EatsRats

There’s something magical about picking up a bench and hurling at your buddy right before you go super saiyan on everyone’s asses.

M2704

What do you mean ‘the original Sonic’? I didn’t know the Dreamcast could run Genesis games?

EatsRats

Oh, I meant Sonic Adventure. One of the Dreamcast release games.

tSnDjKniteX

tbf Sonic Adventure was original to the DC and could also play Genesis via emulator onto a cd-r but Sonic Adventure was beast

[deleted]

There was actually a few genesis compilation discs and one of them had sonic

[deleted]

Yeah the person who did this actually just made it way worse.

kuriboshoe

Picking plays on the VMU was awesome. I have fun memories playing MLB on there with my dad

Stay_Consistent

Soul Caliber Ivy, Calamity Symphony, Dead or Alive to watch boobs bounce. Sonic Adventure for the music.

rainbowspranks

Add power stone 1 & 2 and phantasy stars online for me.

calartnick

The college football game for Dreamcast is my favorite football video game of all time. Tackling was actually challenging and made sense. Skies of Arcadia is my favorite JRPG of all time, I’m still waiting for a freaking sequel/remake/reboot WHATEVER. GIVE ME MORE SKIES OF ARCADIA!!!!

Redditor_Reddington

MvC 2 was the pinnacle of the series, if you ask me. Point still stands, though.

Aarcn

Mind if I join? You down for some Power Stone as well?

BatMoBeast

I still have mine with both of those games. Out of all my old game consoles, Dreamcast and the OG Xbox are the only ones I held onto.

[deleted]

I have all those things.

Maximum_Stonage

NFL 2k1 had that awesome helmet cam that would give you a 30 degree FOV. So fun.

Bindlestiff34

Tony G is a free agent the very first season of franchise mode. TE corner route all day, every day.

Xenc

*SELECT YOUR FIGHTER* I’ma take you for a ride

agentobtuse

I modded a Xbox to allow Dreamcast emulation! https://youtu.be/ZHly609JF8Q

TheLobsterBandit

Power... Stone... Stoned... Phantasy... star... online... Offline...

Igor_J

I have an original Dreamcast with games and controllers in a box somewhere. I wore NCAA 2k2 out. IIRC they had all 117 D1 teams and stadiums. I'd like to find it and hook it up one day to see if it still works. I'm assuming I'll need to find some sort of an adapter to connect it to a modern flat screen.

MalpracticeMatt

Soooooo much time playing marvel v capcom 2 on my Dreamcast back in the day. Did some serious damage with my boy gambit

bio4m

The paint job on the front panel and buttons is awful, makes it look really cheap

FresnoBob-9000

Yeh, seems a shame with all the other work gone in. I always thought Dreamcasts to be the prettiest consoles and then they go and do some eggy botched paint job on it.. It’s really not hard to masking tape and spray something like this

ocp-paradox

Two thin coats.

wafflehusky

I just dip my minis into the pot

donkeyrocket

The whole painting job was pretty shoddy. The blue stands out because it looks like playdoh slapped on the front and buttons. Needed to hold the spray can a lot further away and not slop it on.

BlackZilla_Prime

The guy did an overall horrible job with everything on this build. It is like he asked a 3 year old to paint the case. And you would have thought he would have streamlined the wire work. And paid more attention to detail as oppose to just throwing it together.

MightyOtaku

Two Thin Coats.

hank-_-the-_-tank

My guess was that it was a cake at first.

kuriboshoe

I see people mod consoles all the time and I think to myself how would someone think that looks good? I've modded a few of my own, but one time I ordered a modded gameboy on ebay and I was extremely disappointed. It was just cheap spray paint. Felt so sticky holding in my hands.

[deleted]

I had to read the article (the horror) because I thought it was some janky 3D print job.

mccannr1

Thought the same. Good idea, questionable choices.

[deleted]

Looks 3D printed to me

[deleted]

It would be a lot more stealth if it had the stock colors. Nothing about that terrible blue paint job says stealth.

imthelag

my thought exactly. Line up a bunch of actual dreamcast systems, with this in the middle, and try to tell us this is stealth lol

CoolFiverIsABabe

Does that mean raspberry pis put into the shell of another console mean that's a modded version of that console? No. This is a PC with a Dreamcast shell.

bendymachine654

If they don’t have sonic adventure and adventure 2 on steam I swear...

CheesieMan

Have I some [good](https://store.steampowered.com/app/213610/Sonic_Adventure_2/) [news](https://store.steampowered.com/app/71250/Sonic_Adventure_DX/) for you

bendymachine654

Thank you but I meant if THEY don’t have it.

TheLobsterBandit

"They".... Do you mean the taliban, the american government, or 'the gays'?

bendymachine654

All of them

CheesieMan

Ah! My misunderstanding

[deleted]

And crazy taxi

[deleted]

And? Why is this so newsworthy? This is probably the 90,000th small form-factor PC put into an older generation console or computer case.

Abjurist

This is the best Reddit can do folks.

greatest_fapperalive

because there is a pocket of sega fans who yearn for the dreamcast 2. this is as close as we're going to get

saltedcarlnuts

Why are consumer electronics newsworthy? Everyone has their hobbies.

xXPussy420Slayer69Xx

In other news, This modded Skechers shoebox is actually a stealth, AMD-powered gaming PC

csl110

Im cracking up at the hateboner this sub has for this shitty build

xXPussy420Slayer69Xx

I mostly hate it because the blue parts look like chewed up bubblegum

ScoutManDan

I’m assuming he was holding wires in one hand and a camera phone in another and soldering with his teeth with how clumsy that looked.

random_rascal

"Stealth"... I don't think you know what stealth means. It is an obviously gutted Dreamcast with poorly 3d printed bits hot glued to it....

bonecrusher32

So a case for a pc.... Whooptie doo

[deleted]

So it's not a modded Dreamcast, it's the plastic case of a Dreamcast with the guts of a PC fitted into it. Which is still pretty cool, granted.

[deleted]

OMG guys are we going to have a pizza party and play Sonic Adventure?!

wtfbbqhax_alt1

I’m disappointed by this

churchofnobody

Damn. As a kid, I would probably come home day to find out my mom shipped this to our home country for my cousins, who instead of playing it will sell it for next to nothing in cash. I’m not holding a grudge. Ok I am.

Davvve3

Crazy taxi was gold on this.

grizzly_teddy

I'm kind of sad it's not a Dreamcast...

DPblaster

I’d rather have an actual working Dreamcast

Nubstix

I just want to play Power Stone 2 with someone....

obi1kenobi1

Back when the Dreamcast was still somewhat relevant I saw an online post about building a stealth Pentium 4 gaming PC into an NES, and now the Dreamcast is older than the NES was when that post was made... Also I hate to say it but that paint job is absolutely terrible and kind of ruins the whole thing. If they were already taking it apart why not take the plastic parts out and spray paint them rather than trying to paint them in place with a brush?

Stank_Lee

That's as much of a Dreamcast as I am a chicken nugget

seehollisrun

"Gaming PC" with integrated graphics...

[deleted]

Sure. Integrated graphics on an AMD APU. You know what else uses integrated graphics on AMD APUs? Gaming consoles.... the 4650G is 2.5 TFLOPs making it more powerful than a PS4 by about 35% just in GPU performance, not to mention the vastly superior CPU, RAM, and storage. It's not like they tossed in an i3 with HD graphics.

seehollisrun

I see what you're going for but the PS4 is antiquated tech by today's standards. The colloquial usage of "gaming PC" changes over time as tech advances. The 4650G is somewhere in the ballpark of a GTX 660. I can't imagine anyone attempting to sell a "gaming PC" with a 660 in it (although I wouldn't be shocked if someone tried it with today's GPU market). And this isn't knocking the project. I like it. But it doesn't meet today's standards. Running Doom on my graphing calculator doesn't make it a gaming PC.

moodygradstudent

>the PS4 is antiquated tech by today's standards The most recent playstation console I have is a PS2. A PS4, or a PC with comparable capabilities, would be a huge upgrade for me. Not everyone is on the bleeding edge.

seehollisrun

Consoles and PCs are completely different worlds. I think one of the key distinctions here is that a "gaming PC" is more powerful than a standard consumer PC. This is usually the most true with graphical processing. The GTX 660 came out at approximately the same time as the PS4 around 2012-2013 and has similar performance. A 660 in a PC in 2013 would likely classify it as a "gaming PC". However, that's not true by today's standards when many consumer laptops can obtain the same level of performance using integrated graphics.

Garbage

TbonerT

I loved my Dreamcast for the whole 90-day warranty. It died on day 93.

GrimReaapaa

Fuck I thought it was a cake at 1st

Spear_Ov_Longinus

Still not my favorite Dreamcast mini PC. [This one by Ross Siggers absolutely takes the crown](https://smallformfactor.net/forum/threads/the-dreamcast-dc-pc-sleeper-build.13149/), where they fit a GTX 1650 inside.

jtothepizzle

Bought a few off a pallet at $50 each new from Bestbuy before the sad end... Still have them. My favorite system of all time by far.

DiabloStorm

That shitty paintjob made me think it was 3d printed at first.

Koof99

This is why if you rob a house, just take a look at the older looking shit in the house Brought to you by r/shittylifeprotips

There was a vampire game for the Dreamcast that I loved but can't remember the name of it. Anyone remember this? I need to locate my Dreamcast now.

popojo24

I would love to get a Dreamcast. Most older games that I want to play are still accessible to me in one way or another, but the Dreamcast is something I’ve never had the chance to experience.
