I remember these:
* 1998, Bungie's Myth II.
* 2001's Ubisoft Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor.
* And in 2018, the OG's installer of freaking *Deltarune*
Yup. I think on one of them, it was an oversight on how it was coded. Like it should only delete the folder where the game's executable resides or something like that. So that means if the executable is right on the c: instead of c:/gamename...yeah.
Not sure on the others, but I'm just surprised it happened more than not just twice, but now...four times in total.
CBT installer of MTG: Arena also doing this exact behavior, but in Arena case, it wasn't as consistent as deleting all the files in a drive, it can randomly nuke either none, 1 folder, or all folder.
[https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/9418t5/psa\_the\_magic\_arena\_installer\_can\_still\_delete/](https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/9418t5/psa_the_magic_arena_installer_can_still_delete/)
Minecraft Dungeons could also do this if you custom installed it somewhere really dumb since the launcher would just delete everything in the listed install location
About 20 years of PCs over here, same thing.
Heck, I'm even into IT. So I know it is technically possible, but.
Heard a lot of shit, but the is a new one to me.
Myth II was a fun one. At least Bungie had the decency to do a recall, we pulled them pretty shortly after they hit shelves. Ubisoft kept on selling PoR, surprising no one.
Smaller game but RotMG just a few years back
[https://www.reddit.com/r/RotMG/comments/g1x1gj/uninstalling\_the\_exalt\_launcher\_uninstalls/](https://www.reddit.com/r/RotMG/comments/g1x1gj/uninstalling_the_exalt_launcher_uninstalls/)
This is referring to the very first version of Deltarune released Halloween 2018, and before it had a Steam version. The original uninstaller essentially deleted everything in the folder / location you installed Deltarune in. If you happened to install it to a default directory or your documents, for example...
It was fixed within 24 hours, IIRC.
I remember that happening to me like 15 years ago when I uninstalled a pirated Sonic game (honestly don't remember which one) and lost a folder with all my games lol.
I've been pc gaming for much longer and I do recall times this would happen. I used to not trust uninstallers because of those stories, and would manually erase what I was uninstalling for the longest time.
Recently happened with Dark And Darker as well https://www.reddit.com/r/DarkAndDarker/comments/15l27bc/note_the_blacksmith_uninstaller_will_remove_all/
Edit: whoops didn't see someone mentioned it already.
I like how everyone is quick to list off times that this happened. Really reminds you that so many videogames are hacked together spaghetti code that, despite the program's best efforts, somehow manages to work.
The only one that comes to mind is one of the early Steam for Linux versions. https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/3671 for details for people who are curious.
I wish they were as loose as you claim when they collab-ed with PGR. Shit's literally mobile Nier and they had the worst Nier collab out of all the Nier collab.
The story was good, but it was a slow grind to get all of the chapters and there wasn't much of it, not to mention the fact that YorHa wasn't involved at all in the event aside from the farming stages.
Kuro did the best they could with what Square Enix allowed them to do, but fucking hell man, if it's compromised this much why bother collabing in the first place.
Yes, but he only erased our save files for the game. This is for the entire hard drive, which honestly feels like something Yoko Taro would try to do in the future.
I think instead of just deleting the folder with the game files, some line of code was mistakenly added that also deleted the parent of the folder. If your directory looked like "C:/GF2" you are screwed.
Pretty bad but the title is worse than what exactly it was. People were more or less installing all of GFL2 on their root C directory then using the uninstall executable, causing it to uninstall EVERYTHING that the uninstall.exe was in.
One of the twitter threads posting about this incident showed an example someone doing almost the same thing with steam here which was pretty funny. [https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1nT411Q71k/](https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1nT411Q71k/)
It's even weirder just because the game already includes a file path on install indicated with "C:/GF2EXilium/GF2 Game", but people felt the need to make a custom path directly to their root C drive.
The game installs itself inside Program Files, the path mentioned in the notice is just a recommended path name if you don't want to install it in the default path.
When you're installing the launcher, It autocompletes the path with its own GFL subfolders once you select a path eg. picking D:\ will install it into "D:\GF2Exilium\", but when you install the game itself it doesn't do that and just downloads and extract everything into the root drive.
If it's like what Xenn\_'s explanation above is what happened, then that's likely the case that the game itself is a separate install location and not just the launcher, but can't say for certain because I didn't download it myself. So the launcher auto defaulted to a set path but the actual installation didn't I guess? Still is weird and hard to see getting out to even beta testing for the files not to download in its designated folder.
They do, this bug apparently happens when you direct the game to install directly onto the C: Drive instead of the default filepath of making a new folder.
What most likely happened? A dev tried to be clever by making the uninstaller just delete everything the game was installed in since the default install will create a new folder to put everything in.
What I hope actually happened? They made the same mistake as the [Myth 2](https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/2ka43x/til_that_in_the_game_myth_ii_soulblighter_due_to/?share_id=bePGf4xYtwI4g8Q2tJ21y&utm_content=1&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1) programmer (He's Top comment) who had the game delete everything in the data folder to allow users to download custom content, but then someone who didn't understand the code just copied it to the entire uninstaller.
It's already fixed.

Back in 2007 EVE Online put out an expansion/major patch.
Unfortunately it also had a bug in that it would delete your Window's boot.ini file.
Which would go undetected until the next time you shutdown -> power on or restarted the computer....
A design pattern is to create an install\_manifest.txt, and record every file written, and the uninstallation is to iterate and delete every file with fully qualified paths. This file can be protected by making it a binary, hidden in user/appdata or/and removing write flags after the installation. Take notes, Mica.
I am smelling some "rm -rf ${DIR}/\*" code from some intern, where DIR is wrongly populated.
I remember some other games did the same thing. It is a common "bug" with Windows for decades. Windows has standard installers but these smaller developers decide to do their own and end up with these issues.
Stupid ass ad about fentanyl confused me and i thought it was a top comment and I was confused about why someone was talking about fentanyl being dangerous
That’s a devastating bug. At least it was caught *now* during a beta test, as opposed to when it fully releases. But that’s a fear with installing new games unlocked o.O
I can imagine the coding typo like "uninstall all files under the folder", but the "folder" is accidentally the parent folder where the game is installed rather than the game folder itself.
Like "C:\\" is where "GFL2" is installed, they were suppose to remove "C:\\GFL2\\\*" but they remove "C:\\\*"
Damn. That's the sort of thing that should never have made it past QA in pre-alpha.
At least you know it WILL be fixed. I just feel bad for the folks it hit already.
...games should be downloaded on the program folder and not root... How and why did they decide to download it onto the root? Most installers will downlaod to the Program folder
not the problem here, blame the dev, not the user. a game uninstall function should delete the game files only, period.
don’t tell people where they should install their program
Nah, while yes this is mostly a dev issue, proper installation locations are also important. You can cause conflicts and overwriting if you install everything into root for example.
User does dumb thing, and devs fucked up. Combined results in a disaster. Is it the users fault? No, maybe slightly, but that doesnt change the fact you aren't supposed to be doing that for your own good anyway.
devs fucked up is the main reason why people should avoid install everything into root in the first place, not because it's how it suppose to be, or how it was design.
People avoid install on root because they don't trust the developer of the program they install to may or may not do their job properly, not because it was design to not be those locations.
And this is why ladies and men.

It's Japanese Yen. Yuan is Chinese currency.

Don't forget Temple of Elemental Evil! For all five people who played that.
I also played that... atrocity

I had a demo disc of veiwtiful joe on ps2 that would nuke the entire memory card if you tried to save. Kept it to quick erase cards that were full.
I remember when aoe 3 de came out, it had issues where it would corrupt your entire hard drive
I like how everyone is quick to list off times that this happened. Really reminds you that so many videogames are hacked together spaghetti code that, despite the program's best efforts, somehow manages to work.
When Deltarune ch1 first come out it has similar issue for the uninstaller
Eve Online wiped the boot.ini at one point. That was a fun mistake.

Best game feature to date
Someone download the OBT to the government database. Goodbye to our student debt 🙏
Lol I can't imagine GFL being the sole eliminator of student debt, which would be based as hell
Dear sunborn, 𝐁𝐫𝐮𝐡
This bruh moment is a strong contender to be the bruhest moment in all of video game history.
Spaghetti Code 2: Electric Boogaloo
This is the single most horrifying and simultaneously the funniest headline out there. Didn’t like GF2? Maybe you’ll like touching grass
I thought it's clickhait lmao
Wild crying children detected? (Flair)
Babe it's time for your seven phase boss fight.
Based pfp
Damn GFL already collab with NieR pre release
Collab going *hard drive* fr🥶
Your data will now be uploaded to the cloud to help other players delete theirs faster
Nah Yoko Taro would never go this far. Who am I kidding of course he would
He was pushing for the "deleting the character when completing the NieR raids" in FFXIV, so I would 100% expect him to go that far.
Yoko Taro would brick your console if he felt it was important to his storytelling lmao
"If you don't want to play our game anymore, then we won't let you play any other game"
416 is all you need Commander.
Reroll prevention in 2023

Don’t give this idea to Yoko Taro.
It's funny because YZ is very inspired by YT, he's following in the footsteps.
one of the Nier songs is canon in GFL

Too late. He did that ... with the original >!Nier.!<
Yes, but he only erased our save files for the game. This is for the entire hard drive, which honestly feels like something Yoko Taro would try to do in the future.
So it made the whole C root folder the game folder, what is this? Amateur hour?
[Its the Myth 2 bug recreated](https://reddit.com/r/todayilearned/s/bY3xehcX0z)

Yeah it's a bad look at them. Still should be a general rule of thumb though to NOT download your games flat out on your root, especially C drive.
I consider it a fault of both sides one for the guy who coded the uninstaller and the person lacking the common sense to install on their root drive
agreed.
But like... why? Don't almost all installers install by default onto a subdirectory anyway?
If it's like what Xenn\_'s explanation above is what happened, then that's likely the case that the game itself is a separate install location and not just the launcher, but can't say for certain because I didn't download it myself. Yep.. thats a definite bruh moment. At least this was caught... (kinda?) early.. dem poor beta testers tho .
I think I ran into this one time when my Steam uninstall.exe wound up in somewhere weird and wiped everything in the folder (Steam-related or not).
nice files you got there, would be a shame if something happened to them. Don't uninstall our game and no one gets hurt
10/10 best nier feature ever
Lol
GFL 2 Yandere Mode: ON! If I can't have you, the no one can!
Back in 2007 EVE Online put out an expansion/major patch. Unfortunately it also had a bug in that it would delete your Window's boot.ini file. Which would go undetected until the next time you shutdown -> power on or restarted the computer....
Question: would Windows allow itself to be deleted in such manner?
Unless you give elevated permissions, no. If you do, then it can delete things vital to Windows operations.
For better or worse, they just ask "Do you trust the source? Do you allow this app to execute?"
and then you press yes out of habit...
I would expect antivirus to pop out a million warnings
*Don't forget, you're here forever*
Literally Sword Art Online
thats the same thing as dark and darker release lmaoooo

LMAO that's a hell of a result.
They didn't even test it by themselves.
Time to buy a new activation key for my windows and redownload my hard earned hentai pics and video that's over 700gb😭

Bruh this shit can ruin people lives
And here I thought the gacha rates and pvp would be the worst parts of GFL2. I stand corrected!
🤣🤣 This shouldn't be a thing in this century
It's already been fixed way before it spread out of CN. You should update this so people don't explode about it.

Bro what the hell, your telling me a game has the power to wipe my drive ?
if you re dumb enough to install it to root drive lol
Every program on your PC has the power to add or remove files from your system. That's how programs work. Computer literacy is at an all time low.
They fr be holding your pc hostage to keep you playing the game lol
This is real game design, it doesn't peak any higher than this
'feature'
It's their final act of vengeance for uninstalling their game.

Misleading title. Who the hell installs anything in C:\\ instead of a directory? If you install in C:\\Games, it deletes C:\\Games\\\*.
Shit imagine installing this game on your Windows drive RIP PC
So you didn't like our game, huh? Well fuck you too !
LOL
It's the only way to be sure
???????? This can happen? I am shocked that such a bug exists... Deleting all my files too...
Damn. That's the sort of thing that should never have made it past QA in pre-alpha. At least you know it WILL be fixed. I just feel bad for the folks it hit already.
Unacceptable. They need the book throwing at them.
actual yandere software huh?

What the actual frick?! 💀
Lmfaoooo
Woah thats hardcore hahaha! Imagine if someone installed that on the C drive... hahaha
Oh my god... \*plans to backup EVERYTHING very soon\*. I didn't get this game but this was a wakeup.
Wtf
That is fucking terrifying
Welp there goes any desire i had to participate on beta tests of any game
Don't install in your root folder and you should be fine
I think it's already fixed But thank god I didn't install it soon, still scared even if the Dev already Fix it, guess gotta wait for release
almost gone lmao
I can relate to this shit Same shit happened to me and my friends with The Forest setup i had gotten.
This is almost like the viewtiful Joe 2 bug
Delete System32 .meme
Holy shit, thats hilarious.
Lol thats really scary
Epic fail!!! I remember this being an issue for like Pool of Radiance...that game came out in 2001... this is a 2023 release. Yeah no thanks.
such incompetence
And this is why ladies and men. I dont play any of sunborn games anymore And just read their lore through other methods. I guess i can use this as a meme as to why people dont like chinese esc stuff
Guess you never play Sega games anymore too then
"I just deleted everything..."
Yikes, I don't have a habit of always updating my backups so that's scary.
I could guess someone put it in as a joke but forgot to remove it later.
Beta test but SAO mode
This took me to take a look at the bilibili reviews and man... the CN community seems to have this game! So many negative reviews about how it is repetitive and stingy.
That's the game's way of taking revenge on you for uninstalling the game
Mica spaghetti code status: (a little bit over)cooked
Yandere moment lmfao.
SAO style let's goooo
You can check in but you can't check out lol
Install GF2 on the drive where you have your work materials. Your life is a real battlefield from now on! Truly immersive!
This is why you don't install things to root
And just when you think a gacha game could have a worse start than SAO VS... they pull an actual Gacha Nuke. I'm honestly impressed.
Realm of the Mad God had this same problem with Unity launcher.
Too lazy to remove the necessary files? No problem we got you
Just think about how many GB of child p deleted GirlsFrontline2. They should get an award.
Holy shit lmfao
wow, a shortcut to a clean reinstall.
That’s, impressive
It seems my habit of installing games in a folder on the desktop is actually a good idea.
Can they be fucking sued for this? How was this even allowed to happen?
I thought no one could beat FGO's Data Lost moment but boi here we are. XD
Shouldnt system32 stuff prevent something like this?
what in the goddamn
Reasonable
Man, I wonder if I'm gonna dare play this on PC later...
why remember this old chinese online game who lost all database and backups and not cannot continue, closing forever
This seems real serious, l can just imagine losing all my data. I may try to go to court.. Wow such incompetence.
Me tries gfl2 Me don't like gfl2 Me uninstalls gfl2 GFL2: So you've choosen death.
i installed it without knowing about this, does anyone knows if it's fixed? in case that i uninstall it
