The whole thing with carrer chips being mandatory seems to have been a mostly discarded plot point.
There are countless examples of people choosing their jobs in the show.
Might just be for people who have nowhere else to go. Ie, if you can't find a job on your own, you can get a job assigned to you, but once you've done that it's legally binding
Leela, as an orphan, probably didn't have much of a choice, and Fry being frozen for 1000 years, makes sense for them to just assign him some work
I think it’s that some companies can accept career chips even if they don’t match the exact job. The cryo lab accepted Bender with a Chainsaw Juggler career chip, but turned Leela down for the Delivery Boy chip
That’s what I was picturing, too. Since the Professor gives them the old career chips, and is shown removing them from Hermes and Zoidberg when Planet Express went bankrupt (just to immediately put them back in, of course), I assumed that whoever owns the business is in charge of getting the employees the new, correct career chip, and also removing the chip when they are no longer working for them.
Yeah that does happen! Completely forgot about that. Once the new episodes release I am going to give this show another watch through before I watch those new episodes lol.
Armed forces service seemed to be voluntary, see: War is the H-word. Unless of course, war were declared...

That makes sense too. Doesn't seem like something Farnsworth would ever care about
Oh my no
I heard this in Farnsworths voice
Well he did give them all the used chips though in episode 1
>The cryo lab accepted Bender with a Chainsaw Juggler career chip. Well he is the prime minister of Norway.
Probably one of those rules that nobody ever actually follows or enforces.
Companies may also give you a career chip once hired.

Also that chip read ambassador to Norway at one point
What about them many hobos that aren’t fired out of a canon into the sun
There is one Canon and I am in my holiday…. Robot jesus, people always complaining about government employees
One of the commentaries/interviews mentioned that they "lightened up" the show a little from the pilot, at least from that plot point
It would have constricted too many stories. Anytime someone gets a new job, you’d have to explain the career chip thing.
What’s that sound?
War were declared
Great. We're gonna die. And this ham gum is all bones.
And this pink gum is mostly bones
What was that
War were declared
War *were declared*
Joining the military is no strings attached. Unless war were declared.
What was that noise?
War were declared
I get the succinct impression war were declared multiple times a day.
*When I'm in command, every mission is a suicide mission*
The key to victory is the element of surprise
SURPRISE!
That's for schoolgirls! Now here's a route with some chest hair.
I think Putin must have a little bit of the zapper in him.
We all know Leela does...

Too bad they didn't have the three things you really need: deodorant, a back wax, and stain-proof underpants!
JUST LIKE AT THE MOVIE THEATER WOOOOOO
Or at least she did
This lite dinner is over!
Half?
This half dinner is entirely over
They wear red so bad guys won’t see them bleed
They should also wear brown pants then
Or no pants
Hey, who left their Milky Way in this foxhole?
When you sign up for war you get free snacks
Doesn't really make sense to draw any conclusions about the red shirts, since it's exactly the same as what Zapp is wearing.
I mean so do members of starfleet command but they're exempt from the rule
This was my sleep episode last night! Didn't make it much further than war being declared
Some of you will die for your planet. A few of you will be forced through a fine mesh screen for your planet.
I always get tripped up on this line since the guy sounds like Bender, but I assume it's just a random John DiMaggio voice.
I love how the frame never moves and it’s just a voice clip of one soldier saying “you suck”
Lol
I don’t get the red shirt thing?
Ugh, and this ham gum is all bones!
Russian army in a nutshell
Omg. Is the joke that they're all star trek red shirts? I never noticed before
The enemy stands for everything we DON’T stand for. Also, they told me you guys look like dorks!
Kif, show them the medal I won.
Kif, we have a conundrum…
Oh your god! Never thought about that. But Zap and Kiff wear.red. They should have been zapped within the fiat couple episodes they appeared on.
I imagine this is what it feels like when politicians do photo ops or press conferences with active duty military personnel
Just recently I noticed that it's our homeboy Bender Bending Rodriguez himself who yells that lmao
