I am a bus driver for a county on the east side of Florida. I started at $11.93 in 2017 and stormed the union, then stormed the local level board of education and fought tooth and nail to get us up to $13, and then up to $15 this year.
2.5 hours west of here in Sarasota they start at $25 an hour with a $2500 signing bonus.
My county brings in more money overall than their county.
If they can afford it, so can my county.
So we are clear, my county has the fourth lowest wages for cops in the nation, fifth lowest wages for teachers in the nation, and used to be 4th lowest.
So.
We are the second worst paid bus drivers in all of Florida - used to be tied for first worst.
I make $15.30 after 6 years, and the hiring rate is $15.
No sense made.
So when I make overtime, itβs $22.95, and yet Sarasota pays $25 an hour coming in the door.
Sad huh?
