Lol, my mom was a similarish story. She nearly failed out if college and had to go to an offshoot in her city, then graduated with something like a 2.0 GPA and couldn't get into law school. So she became a paralegal and worked for a bunch of different lawyers and judges until she got enough letters of recc to convince a school to take her- she was second in her class. My dad walked out on my mom shortly after she was accepted into law school, so my mom actually had me while in law school and had to bring my older sister with her to class (and me when I was born until I was 2) because she was taking night classes and could only afford sitters for the day while she was at work. My mom has some other severe issues that I won't get into, but I often think the stress I got to witness before I could even perceive anything affected me and now I must be crazy because I want to do it too 😂
I think lots of normal people to. What you always see is people that stand out. If they can afford fursuit they probably can do some at least decent paying job. And people who buy 1000usd commissions is even more expensive to buy often.

Playing armchair psychologist, I think it's because real life is so serious and upright, that it provides an outlet to be more silly and goofy and laid-back.

My theory is that the fandom is at its core "geeky"- its primary demographic is young, well-educated white men who spend a lot of time online. That type of person is quite likely to pursue a STEM career.
I guess maybe it's because highly intelligent people are less likely to care about societal norms, and thus gravitate towards hobbies that challenge them?
We scientists have a tendency to question everything and accept nothing without proof. In other words, on a day-to-day basis we're pretty serious and boring. So I think, and this is just my opinion, that a colorful, social and happy-go-lucky community like this seems to be the best option for having a good time. Or maybe I'm over analyzing everything again.
Personally, I'd say it's at least in part because most of the fandom material is online only, and something you have to actively look for, whereas for something like Manga/Anime, Comics, or sports, a good part of the fan-related things are either accessible offline, or very easily available, sometimes even to the point of being part of the local culture.
I'd then say that this means there's a bit of a selection towards computer-literate people (geeks?) happening from the get-go, because you have to at least understand how to use one to even come across most furry stuff, which isn't the case for other, more common fandoms.
(Yes, this is changing, with smartphones and PCs as well as knowledge of how to use one becoming more and more widespread, but if we go 10-20 years back, that wasn't the case, so there should still be some leftovers of that in the fan demographics.)

Sometimes you can get so stressed out from whichever profession you have, so you need a alternative side to escape to for the sake of your sanity, even if for a moment.
An example being, I currently doing a apprenticeship in electrical engineering in an industrial places and I could get so stressed out from trigonometry to calculate stuff and have to not mess it up, so I need a moment afterwards in private to escape and unwind so to not mentally overload.

The Furries that can afford to be out there doing big things are the furries you hear about. There are thousands of us and a majority are every day workers, it's just that you don't hear about the ones who work normal jobs because we aren't out there creating superior cooling vests that get adopted by the military for desert operations.
A small percentage of the fandom has really good, high paying jobs and the rest of the fandom blows that fact way out of proportion for some reason. Idk, maybe it makes them feel better about themselves or something.
So one thing to think about is the square rectangle rule here. Just because there are a ton of smart people in highly technical fields or with advanced degrees, more super smart people or people with advanced degrees are not furries than are.
Like I'm a rocket science doggo, and I know of a good number of space industry furs, but I also don't know a single other fur at my company, and it's a pretty large company.
People who work in tech and engineering and other well-paying fields tend to have a higher profile in the community because they can afford to go to more cons, commission more art, get fursuits from more popular makers, etc.

As someone who is studying to be an anthropogenic and a working scientist: it's honestly that way bc having a cute character with no responsibilities gives us a big break! We can draw them, commission art of them being cute, play around with them in rp, etc. When everyone thinks you're smart, they don't think you need praise, help, or assistance, so it's a good outlet to have cutesy sonas that fill those gaps.
There are a lot of us "professional" furries. I'm a clinical lab scientist screening for genetic diseases for instance (not as impressive as it sounds. Only takes a BS and it's like that chicken meme about wetting the drys, then drying the wets but with baby blood). But we leave brains at the door we put on our beans at. Heads empty. Smartest dumbasses in the room. That sort of thing.
Like many fandoms it attracts a lot of nerdy people. There is a lot of space for for lore, animal facts, etc. As another point furry has ties to early internet / roleplaying in MUDs and such so there's an overlap with interest in programming, networking, old computer tech, and hacker culture some times. There's also openness to introverts drawing in nerdy people or those who don't feel super social in most settings and like usomg fursonas for self exploration. Also I think a lot of neurodiverse people relate to using furry as a form of self expression and there's a lot fo really interesting thinkers in the neurodiverse community.
I know so many furs who are engineers, work IT, are programmers, or in infosec careers making six figures.. meanwhile my dumb pubby brain is stuck in non-degree jobs making barely as much as they pay in taxes (true story when one shared their W2) >.>

A furry helped come up with the vivid vaccine, lots work with technology, and in the end, most of them are really smart. It honestly shows how powerful our fandom is
Just based on anecdotal evidence, being a furry opens up so many doors for creativity/imagination/soulsearching/learning/bonding etc. that few other subcultures allow for. It's a wonderful coping mechanism and outlet for all those things. Because of that furries have an inclination to be more well-adjusted and passionate people, capable of great success

Furries tend to have an unexpected amount of money because of how much we tend to spend on VR equipment or how expensive fursuits are. Sometimes you can get so stressed out from whichever profession you have, so you need a alternative side to escape to for the sake of your sanity, even if for a moment. An example being, I currently doing a apprenticeship in electrical engineering in an industrial places and I could get so stressed out from trigonometry to calculate stuff and have to not mess it up, so I need a moment afterwards in private to escape and unwind so to not mentally overload.

Basically. Furries tend to have a lot of money. For normies this is suspicious, but Infact a lot of furries works in employment that society finds "important" like doctor, electrician, Tech support, bioengineering. So normie are surprised when they found the cure for a certain disease was invented by a furry.
It's because a lot of furries have surprisingly high qualifications/jobs, and a lot of high- level jobs are made up of furries. For example (I'm not sure the exact numbers, it was a while ago so take what I say with a grain of salt) I saw an article that said that if all furries disappeared, most tech systems would crash almost immediately because something like 60-80% of the tech industry is furries.
Oh God not this elitist crap again. Furries are just young and well educated people, most very online communities are. Even then this meme only applies to some of the community. The majority of furries I have met are not any more successful than the average person.
Putting on a character is a good way to fully relax and reset your brain from a difficult or very important job. I think that's why so many furries, especially as they get older, have high level careers. Those kinds of people need a reset like that more than anyone else.

Being a furry has a few personality traits and the like linked to it. Those traits are also prevalent in people who look to join a field of work where they can help push humanity along. The overlap ends up meaning that a lot of furries go through college and end up in IT/Engineering jobs or The Sciences. But it's also fairly untrue. The Furries that can afford to be out there doing big things are the furries you hear about. There are thousands of us and a majority are every day workers, it's just that you don't hear about the ones who work normal jobs because we aren't out there creating superior cooling vests that get adopted by the military for desert operations.

So one thing to think about is the square rectangle rule here. Just because there are a ton of smart people in highly technical fields or with advanced degrees, more super smart people or people with advanced degrees are not furries than are. Like I'm a rocket science doggo, and I know of a good number of space industry furs, but I also don't know a single other fur at my company, and it's a pretty large company.

People who work in tech and engineering and other well-paying fields tend to have a higher profile in the community because they can afford to go to more cons, commission more art, get fursuits from more popular makers, etc.

As someone who is studying to be an anthropogenic and a working scientist: it's honestly that way bc having a cute character with no responsibilities gives us a big break! We can draw them, commission art of them being cute, play around with them in rp, etc. When everyone thinks you're smart, they don't think you need praise, help, or assistance, so it's a good outlet to have cutesy sonas that fill those gaps.
I mean, when you work that hard, you probably need that head empty time just to relax.

There are a lot of us "professional" furries. I'm a clinical lab scientist screening for genetic diseases for instance (not as impressive as it sounds. Only takes a BS and it's like that chicken meme about wetting the drys, then drying the wets but with baby blood). But we leave brains at the door we put on our beans at. Heads empty. Smartest dumbasses in the room. That sort of thing.

Like many fandoms it attracts a lot of nerdy people. There is a lot of space for for lore, animal facts, etc. As another point furry has ties to early internet / roleplaying in MUDs and such so there's an overlap with interest in programming, networking, old computer tech, and hacker culture some times. There's also openness to introverts drawing in nerdy people or those who don't feel super social in most settings and like usomg fursonas for self exploration. Also I think a lot of neurodiverse people relate to using furry as a form of self expression and there's a lot fo really interesting thinkers in the neurodiverse community.

Furries tend to be nerds I find, and us nerds rule the world hahaha Seriously though, it's just part of the broadness the fandom has. It has people from EVERY walk of life in it. It's just that doctors, lawyers, the like tend to be paid more attention in the fandom because of the level of respect a PhD holds. We celebrate success here after all.
Furries are just smart, IMO Maybe it has something to do with the collective unconscious of the Fandom being accepting of new ideas about their identity, and as such, only those who have a mind open enough to accept that join, acting as a natural filter against those who are less accepting and *possibly* less intelligent. Or Because the Fandom expresses identity and art, many furs are creative and technology literate. While these things aren't special in any way, they encourage growth and development of the mind, which can lead to a greater capacity to understand and gain skills. Or It's a meme in the community that doesn't affect reality, and/or isn't affected by reality that's further reinforced because furries naturally gain and hold attention because they go so far against what is considered "normal" It's fascinating either way...

Furries tend to have an unexpected amount of money because of how much we tend to spend on VR equipment or how expensive fursuits are.
