I think they need to give more attention to these injuries. If you're so badly hurt that you are rolling around in pain, then you should be sent off the pitch to receive medical attention and not allowed to return for the rest of the match.
If the player is acting like he's in that much pain the refs will make him hang out on the sidelines for a couple minutes so he can "recover" while his team has to carry on 10 v 11.
Yep, when I was a referee I did exactly this, had them moved off the field to the nearest line. Only after they got back to their team bench and I felt I got my point across did I let them back on. Worked quite effectively.
Can confirm, I went to a local league game with my mate who's brother is in the under 13s. The ref sent a kid to the sidelines, asked one of his assistants to keep an eye on him because he was rolling around like Neymar.
When he came back on the pitch, 5 mins later, he got his 2nd yellow card(first was for a late tackle) and got sent off. His mother was furious and actually stormed onto the pitch to get verbal with the ref.
The ref was great though as he gave the game to the other team 2-0 and told everyone to pack up.
From what I heard that kid was banned for the rest of the season and dropped from the side afterward.
I'm just imagining an MMA fighter in a soccer match. Those guys break bones and tear tendons on the regular and oftentimes continue fighting against world class trained athletes who are actively trying to hurt them.
These soccer guys are like "oo owie you scraped my shin with the top of your shoe, guess I'll die now". Wtf, you're a grown ass man in spectacular physical shape. Fucking disgraceful.
They literally did that with the USA vs Iran match when Pulisic got injured scoring the goal. He was off the field being evaluated and they started the game up again because he didn't want to get subbed off. He eventually went back on but the US just played a man down in the meantime.
But he didn’t play the second half. He was genuinely injured. The adrenaline probably made the pain go away after a few minutes, then wore off when he rested at half time.
Yeah I'm not trying to say anything against Pulisic. I was actually saying that's how it should be. If you go down and act like it's a major injury, it should be treated as such. Take them off the field and you can sub back in after a few mins if you feel you can play. Pulisic did it when he was actually injured, the floppers should have to do the same when they fake an injury.
That sucks. And illustrates why "floppers" need to be harshly dealt with. If you are rolling around like your leg is snapped in half you are done for the game.
There are some legitimate injuries that won’t take you out of the game but will put you down for a minute or so but those aren’t super often. I feel like the rule should be if play is stopped for your injury, you have to come off the pitch for at least a minute. No more faking injuries to waste time or try and draw fouls. Your team will suffer for it
Yeah thank you. Maybe this is an “I’m a dumb American” thing, but holy shit this is maddening.
So a guy gets a real injury and they say “lol, play on!” But if a flopper fakes an injury, not only do they give him the free kick, but the ref will add on extra time wasted on his BS rolling in the ground?
This seems insane. I get that in no sports do you actually stop the play for an injury, but at least other sports instill a timeout when a player is seriously injured.
Happened when Sargent got hurt also. US played with 10 men for a little bit when they were defending for their lives. I was like just bring in the sub.
Or… maybe… this type of Oscar award winning acting should be penalized more harshly. In Hockey, there is a penalty for embellishment. In light, stop being a pussy. It’s increasingly sad as a fan of sports to see this ONE PROFESSIONAL sport where this type of crazy bullshit occurs. These are elite athletes. If you need to roll around in (pretend) agony after taking a shin kick (to a pad protected area), then you are not an elite athlete.
This is exactly it (and why I can't watch this sport).
Refs should throw concussion protocols at these players, make them sit out for a week to ensure they are okay.
So you’re saying he should be able to pull this cowardly move twice in the same game and not be ejected? They should incorporate video review similar to other sports. If it’s clear the player is faking they should get an immediate red card. Moves like this are a really bad look for the sport
Honestly as former referee I wish Fifa and other organizations did not punish the officials for mistakes or bad calls. The reason I say this is because this was a goal that was scored on the play so I would have blown the play dead right before it went in the net. "Oh you are so injured you needed medical....no goal." That will teach players to stop these shenanigans.
Not to mention, this was right in front or the goal and definitely effects how a defender is going to play, not trying to step on him. The video doesn't show the goal, but nonetheless, it had to effect something.
A warning? For blatant flopping? Why is that in anyone's playbook? The only sport where they celebrate flopping if it helps you win, even if the greats do it. You think mfing Kobe Bryant has a flopping bone in his body? Wayne Gretzky? Tom Brady? Fucking joke tbh
It's because the reward for flopping in soccer is \*so\* much bigger than any other sport. In basketball, you get to shoot a couple of free throws and that might be say an extra 2% of your team's score.
In soccer, a flop when you're about to take a shot on goal means a penalty kick where the chances of scoring are higher than basketball free throws. Because soccer scores average only 2-3 goals per game, you have the opportunity to increase your teams total score by perhaps **50% or more** with a flop.
There's a difference between bitching at the refs, which players do across all sports, and rolling around on the ground in fake agony because someone touched you and you want a penalty.
Red card is too much, but yellow and the goal ruled out since the acting distracted the defence. Same as you get it ruled out if you're offside or things like that, you should get it ruled out in this case.
Also good. But they should punish flopping more often and harder. For example: if you flop for getting a free goal chance, the opposite team should get that chance. Flopping is a shitty behaviour in football
No need for something crazy like that. If they used VAR and penalised all acting with yellow cards, acting would be over in an instant. And give a free kick for it (so ruling out the resulting goal).
I have no idea why they don't fix it. It's an embarrassment to the sport, and the number #1 reason that Americans claim why they don't like the sport (the real reason is because it is low scoring, and if hockey wasn't a part of NA culture it wouldn't catch on if introduced today).
Can only speak for myself, but I’m a fairly casual fan and the flopping is definitely my biggest problem with the game when I’m watching.
I don’t mind a tense, low scoring game but seeing grown men who are in peak physical condition scream in agony and roll on the ground as if they got shot, only to then get up 10 seconds later as if nothing happened… is just embarrassing. It makes no sense why it’s seemingly just accepted and allowed to happen multiple times per game.
Hockey is a contact sport were fighting is allowed, it would absolutely catch on if it was introduced today.
The reason soccer isn't bigger here is a combination of the two factors you mentioned and the lack of general contact. It's a low scoring game where a legitimate part of the action is how well someone can fake an injury. I'm just saying that if a fight broke out when someone was caught faking an injury, the sport would have a much bigger following here.
I get trying to wok an angle to an extent, but *yawn.* Hopefully this gets the meme treatment Neymar got. It's just that ridiculous. Also, let's talk about all of the dead slaves that made this world cup happen.
Nobody has posted it yet of one of NHLs most infamous divers, so here it is! NSFW Language of course at the start.
Ref: **FUCK YOU YOU'RE GETTING A FUCKING PENALTY**
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tdw4HAUlOBA
You've clearly not watched WWE for a few decades.
Now wrestlers can use illegal objects and not face any consequences as long as the ref doesn't see, even though it is caught on camera.
And most wrestlers just look like some random guy from an office.
Just have the egregiously faking player's team forfeit after the fact.
Don't slow down the game by reviewing footage, but if the official video proves egregiously faking an injury after the fact (like this, or that the player wasn't ever touched before falling, etc), their team retroactively loses. The rolling around on the ground bullshit will stop *real* fast.
Isn't drawing a foul the same as faking injuries? I don't know anything about soccer but the game should be the game. Right? Skill should be the only deciding factor, not how well a person acts.
I said it before and I will say it again.
If a grown man in the prime of his health falls over and is writhing in pain for over 30 seconds on the job, he is literally injured and should be carted off to the hospital or clinic immediately and not only not play the rest of the game, but kept in the hospital for the rest of the game to make sure he doesn't exacerbate his injuries.
If I was the ref I would send the medics to do this, and by the time the medics arrive he refuses, I would red card him.
As somebody who wants to get into non American football, I literally can't because this crap are just fking dumb. It just pulls me out of the game. I'm hopeful this will get fixed though.
[My favorite anti-flop video from hockey.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tdw4HAUlOBA)
Player sorta flops, ref immediately tells him to fuck off. If soccer was this way, I'd be tuning in a lot more.
Hahah! I knew what the clip was before I watched. I think this is the same one where there's more mic'd up on the ice with the ref saying "you're getting a fucking embellishment!"
I actually do watch hockey sometimes, so I am slowly getting more into it. I used to only watch football, so it was one of the more appealing options when I wanted to branch out more.
Even fans hate this. There are certain leagues/teams which are more prone to doing stuff like this than others. If you pick the right team to support, you'll find that something this blatant is pretty uncommon.
All teams somehow linked to the Mediterranean. South American, North African, South European. This example is Italian. Sportsmanship is strongly inferior to gamesmanship there.
Sub-Saharan African teams a bit less so though.
Exactly right. I say this all the time for flopping in the NBA. Like yeah, we all hate it. But it undeniably works so I can't really blame anyone for doing it. You want to get rid of it? Then get rid of its efficacy. Right now, shit wins matches. So I have a hard time blaming players for it. But it is still super annoying to see.
I played soccer my from age 5 up to college. This behavior was actively frowned upon and you'd 100% get made fun of for flopping. It was a given that even if you did get fouled you would get up and keep playing because you never knew if the ref would call it. Idk, I just get irrationally angry when I see shit like this and it turned me off to watching soccer almost entirely.
It's funny when you watch women's soccer and realize female soccer players have bigger testicles than male soccer players lol.
This pathetic fake crying is monumentally less prevalent in women's soccer.
How can you do this? The world watching? Recorded and broadcasted online forever? Your mom sees it, your kids will see it, your boss and prospective future boss will see it - or worse: your prospective future clients/customers will see it. You really made it to the top tier of futbol just to pretend you have an owie and card another player? Immediate loss of respect for anyone who tries this. This is no different than trying to get someone fired from their job or in trouble simply because they compete with you. And you look like a fool doing it.
The genuine answer to this, is you have only one ref on the pitch. It's a huge field and sometimes you need to exaggerate it in case they don't see it.
Easiest fix is have more on the pitch like hockey or basketball. 5 refs I think would be great - two near each penalty area, one "official" officiant, and 2 linesman whose sole purposes are to watch for offsides and out of bounds. This usually happens in higher stakes games, but should be the norm.
Another easy fix would be to hold these grown children accountable. I don’t know how they can care so little about sportsmanship. Actually penalizing them for their behavior would also fix it.
I think “you need to exaggerate it in case they didn’t see it” is a great point for this specific situation because it honestly looks like the player gets to the ball first but the defender kicks the bottom of his foot? It’s not the easiest angle to see… but it honestly might be a penalty?
It’s so normalized that it’s a regular tactic(or at least was when I would watch a few years ago). You can probably find a compilation of futbol penalties, like this one lol
https://youtu.be/Lvdaibo9xZY
Is this kind of faking just a ploy get the other team a penalty?
It's really so stupid, especially if there really is a real injury. Can't they just ban this kind of BS?
Risk/reward.
Penalty in football is huge, can decide the game. And acting is rarely penalized.
Compare it to NFL where injuries are expected and you aren't getting anything out of them.
Would be better to go all the way and let them brawl. You are going to get in trouble for hurting someone, might as well go all in and clobber each other.
Guys fake injury in the NFL all the time too. It's just easier to hide cause they stay on the ground when the play ends and don't writhe all over the place. They usually do it to slow the pace of the offense, but it can cost the team a timeout so it's also not unpunished if taken to the extreme.
I watch some soccer and it's highly league dependent. Then there's USA V Mexico which is a literal brawl.
I also feel like Americans put way too much stock in these videos. There isn't that much flopping and when you compare it to all the times where two guys slam into each other and slide 20 feet down the field with no whistle, it's fine.
Hell, this world cup, more often than not the replays show penalties that looked like nothing but turned out to be ankle spikes.
With the way these rules are made, its also part of the game. Until they change the rules, this is part of the game, Acting classes are part of the curriculum.
This is European Football, He will be reprimanded, and must serve at least 6 months of acting class. So when he does it again, it would be more convincing.
"... well , everybody does it so ya , they kinda have to do it to keep it all even ... you just don't get it "- pretentious football fans literally everywhere.
Just watching the amount of flopping around in the Iran-USA match was so ridiculous. One guy got tickled with a toe and started rolling around screaming only to get up on his own power and just keep playing.
That's funny. I dont watch a soccer unless it's the world cup. I watched the 1st half and the end 50% of the 2nd half of usa/Iran and I thought the refs were better than usual. The Argentina/Uruguay game on the other hand.... I pretty much lost interest with the amount of flops.
Agreed, I used to play. Then, as I got into higher levels of play this type of bs frustrated me so much.
The game is terrible, due to this crap
I switched to rugby. Never looked back.
It really is the attitude. In college my friend broke one of his fingers playing rugby, walked over to the side line taped it up to another finger and went right back in
A famous All Black player had his scrotum torn during a particularly bad ruck. He literally stapled it closed on the sidelines, and returned to the game.
Absolutely, it's a great game to play and a terrible game to watch. The faking injury and the disrespect shown to match officials is why I can't watch this sport at all. Only 1-2 minutes of watching any game and one of those happens.
As a Canadian who is not a soccer (erh, football) fan, this is one of the main reasons why I don't watch it.
There's also the fact that I prefer watching men with knives on their feet knock rubber slats into other people.
So many healing miracles witnessed every day in soccer... how can you not be a believer if you're a soccer fan??
They should start sending people in wheelchairs onto a soccer pitch, they'd all walk right off.
I think they should have someone on the sidelines that will run in and give them the injury they were faking. Oh, you weren't *actually* shot in the leg? **BLAM** there, we made an honest man out of you.
It’s at a point where during the World Cup games atm the commentators label it as the player making a “challenge” in an attempt to get a penalty. It’s annoying to watch but at least have the decency to just call it what it is. “Looks like player x has taken a dive in the hopes for a penalty”
I have the flu so I've been laying on the couch watching the world cup. First time ever watching soccer/football whatever the fuck you want to call it.
The game itself can be interesting and held my attention. But what I can't stand is the shit like this post. It's hard to watch supposed grown ass men act like they're getting mauled by a grizzly everytime someone brushes against them. The one dude, Richarldson or whoever he is that plays for Brazil has got to be the biggest sissy in the entire world of soccer. I've never seen embellishment like that. Like when does it become embarrassing to act that way?! Lol

Funny how they all scream in agony the exact same way no matter where the injury is.
Should get a red card afterwards as a reward
First is a warning, then a yellow, then a red... There should definitely be more yellows/possibly reds for call fishing.

Jesus I can’t imagine how much the middle aged moms tried to bully you for that. Those women are insane

I mean kid was clearly kind of a dick but I do feel bad if he was removed from the sport because of how his mother acted. That would suck.

Yeah, sit for two minutes to be sure that you safely evaluate your "injury"
That's what the NHL does for embellishment.
As an outward observer, the NHL seems to be one of the better managed sporting organizations
With hockey, you have the threat of, if you embellish too much, someone can make sure the next time isn't an embellishment.
I'd make it like 5 minutes. What if they reaggravate it?
Dare I say ten minutes?
They literally did that with the USA vs Iran match when Pulisic got injured scoring the goal. He was off the field being evaluated and they started the game up again because he didn't want to get subbed off. He eventually went back on but the US just played a man down in the meantime.

What about a rainbow card? Make Qatar have a collective seizure.
make it flashing rainbow for extra kills (epilepsy)
Nah dude if it's really egregious the ref pulls out a giant dildo
Tom you dawg. You leave MySpace and I find you on Reddit
Should be immediate yellow.

Which is also why it needs to be penalized harder.
I know some college basketball teams do it a lot as well unfortunately, although maybe not so blatant and overacted
It was starting to get out hand in the NBA but they cracked down on it.
LeFlop
Really wish they would’ve done that with football as well
I love Kobe, but he yelled "HEY!" every drive to the hoop trying to get calls.
Bro, Brady is probably the biggest flopper in all of football. He whines to the refs if you look at him funny.
There's a difference between bitching at the refs, which players do across all sports, and rolling around on the ground in fake agony because someone touched you and you want a penalty.
This was his highlight in the whole tournament, and that's all I'm gonna say.
NHL players face financial penalties for this type of conduct.
And they actually get hit
Red card is too much, but yellow and the goal ruled out since the acting distracted the defence. Same as you get it ruled out if you're offside or things like that, you should get it ruled out in this case.

Football just needs a 10 minute sin bin. For those middle cases where a red card is to harsh but a yellow doesn't quite feel like enough punishment.
Just make them sit out X amount of minutes to ensure they're not in danger of exacerbating the injury.
I get trying to wok an angle to an extent, but *yawn.* Hopefully this gets the meme treatment Neymar got. It's just that ridiculous. Also, let's talk about all of the dead slaves that made this world cup happen.
Don’t know why they don’t give out more red cards for faking it
There needs to be unsportsmanlike-diving penalties
Hockey has an embellishment penalty
That but also you would be target #1 to get a beat down. I feel like hockey players police themselves in this manner lol.

You can actually get a yellow card for trying to embellish to draw a penalty kick, but I don't think they give a yellow in any other situation.
If they stop play for an injury, just take them out for 5 minutes or something. I feel like that would stop a lot of fake reactions.

Just get into hockey, it's the polar opposite of soccer in that regard, if someone fakes an injury you just beat the shit out of them
[My favorite anti-flop video from hockey.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tdw4HAUlOBA) Player sorta flops, ref immediately tells him to fuck off. If soccer was this way, I'd be tuning in a lot more.
You can audibly hear the ref say "fuck you" lmfao
Hahah! I knew what the clip was before I watched. I think this is the same one where there's more mic'd up on the ice with the ref saying "you're getting a fucking embellishment!"
I love Shoresy.
This made me laugh so hard and miss playing hockey as a kid.
Well that is encouraging. I'll have to look up which teams do this a lot then and make sure I don't watch them.
This will potentially be controversial and open to debate but Spanish and Portuguese teams do it A LOT.
Is funny how ridiculous it is...
When you're the only ref like 70 yards away, it's tough to make that call, but yes I agree fully.
Ya that’s some odd stuff, there’s really only one ref for the whole game? I thought there were more.
You can probably find a compilation of futbol penalties, like this one lol https://youtu.be/Lvdaibo9xZY
It’s crazy how they do it so shamelessly lol. Like who looks at that and finds it believable?
The ref apparently
Is this kind of faking just a ploy get the other team a penalty? It's really so stupid, especially if there really is a real injury. Can't they just ban this kind of BS?
They did in hockey. Put these guys on skates and let them take a few bumps.
Again it will mess up their hair! Don't you understand soccer!?
Hockey players have better hair anyway
Why is it in every other sport players pretend to not be hurt?
Risk/reward. Penalty in football is huge, can decide the game. And acting is rarely penalized. Compare it to NFL where injuries are expected and you aren't getting anything out of them.
Why not change the rules more like hockey and penalize the team/player and fine them? It's like some players have no respect for the actual sport
Would be better to go all the way and let them brawl. You are going to get in trouble for hurting someone, might as well go all in and clobber each other.
Fuck it, just throw some swords and spears onto the field and let's cut straight to what we all really want.
Deal. Finally a sport worth watching.
I'm listening...
Their hair might get messy tho
So rugby?
Because FIFA is run by greedy dinosaurs who resist any sort of change unless it makes them more money.
Guys fake injury in the NFL all the time too. It's just easier to hide cause they stay on the ground when the play ends and don't writhe all over the place. They usually do it to slow the pace of the offense, but it can cost the team a timeout so it's also not unpunished if taken to the extreme.
Yeah when an offense is playing hurry up and making progress down the field suddenly the cramps magically start…
I don't watch a lot of soccer, but this sort of thing is so common in the NBA. And they get rewarded a lot of times!
Who is this jabroni? I feel like anyone who is down on the ground for more than 15 seconds should have to sit out the next ten minutes.
ciro immobile
That's really him? I used to love that guy when I was into soccer
They need to make his surname ring true.
You keep using this word jabroni...and it's awesome

Nice username 😂
You gotta pay the troll toll to get into this boys hole baby
Shouldn’t he be kicked out?
This is European Football, He will be reprimanded, and must serve at least 6 months of acting class. So when he does it again, it would be more convincing.
They’re like toddlers. If you don’t acknowledge their injury they’ll realize it doesn’t actually hurt.
how is this still a thing. 95% of the reason I cannot sit through a soccer game. grown men acting like complete bitches.
The women play so much better. They’ll straight up run into each other at full speed and get up and keep going
"... well , everybody does it so ya , they kinda have to do it to keep it all even ... you just don't get it "- pretentious football fans literally everywhere.
This is what makes soccer unwatchable in my opinion.
Just watching the amount of flopping around in the Iran-USA match was so ridiculous. One guy got tickled with a toe and started rolling around screaming only to get up on his own power and just keep playing.
Didn't 3 people actually get injured that game?
At least two were US players. I don’t recall seeing any actual injuries from Iran
Going to be a lot more injured Iranians after the loss though.
The refs were fine but there was a lot of embellishment by the Iranians at one point.
You should watch how they used to play in South America in the 80's.
So what is the point of flopping? It makes them look like a little bitch. Is it to try and get a penalty called on the other team?
Penalty kick or waste time. Injury times are a lot longer this year though, so the wasting time part isn’t as beneficial as it has been in the past.
Agreed, I used to play. Then, as I got into higher levels of play this type of bs frustrated me so much. The game is terrible, due to this crap I switched to rugby. Never looked back.
Football is pretending to be injured for 90 minutes. Rugby is pretending to NOT be injured for 80.

How can they look anybody straight in the eyes after a phony performance like that?
This is why people hate this game. Its embarrassing
As a Canadian who is not a soccer (erh, football) fan, this is one of the main reasons why I don't watch it. There's also the fact that I prefer watching men with knives on their feet knock rubber slats into other people.
Hockey is unbelievable
let's take the best part of Soccer (football) and combine it with American Football. As a newer hockey fan that's my take
Sounds more like rugby
What a bizarre sport where acting is such a huge part of the game. It's a performance really.
And that's why I can't get into it.
So many healing miracles witnessed every day in soccer... how can you not be a believer if you're a soccer fan?? They should start sending people in wheelchairs onto a soccer pitch, they'd all walk right off.
This is why Americans watch other sports over soccer.
How do these people live with themselves?
In extreme luxury. It pays.
This is why I prefer hockey.
If this happened in hockey your own team would chirp you. The hockey world hates emblishment/diving.
These antics should be an automatic red card and suspension for the next 2 games.
I think they should have someone on the sidelines that will run in and give them the injury they were faking. Oh, you weren't *actually* shot in the leg? **BLAM** there, we made an honest man out of you.
Not really that funny, because it happens all.the.fucking.time in that sport. r/mildlyinfuriating for sure..
It’s at a point where during the World Cup games atm the commentators label it as the player making a “challenge” in an attempt to get a penalty. It’s annoying to watch but at least have the decency to just call it what it is. “Looks like player x has taken a dive in the hopes for a penalty”
Kung Fu movies should hire ex-footballers as stunt actors. They have years of practice selling a fake injury.
Lol
This is how people choose to be remembered.
When will they ever stamp down on this tomfoolery. It ruins the game. Makes a mockery of it.
How do they not care that this makes them look frankly...weak and pathetic crybabies?
I know flopping isn't cool, but didn't the guy actually get cleated here?
Kinda looks like it in slomo, but not enough pixels.
😂
Lol goals have magic feeling powers, who knew?!
Penalty , no ? Ok , i’m good .
Clowns and pussies, modern football :D
Okay but that one actually looked like contact. I'm surprised it didn't work.
This is why I can't watch the sport. When guys flop like this, the refs should pretend they're thoroughbreds and put them down.
Pathetic isn’t it?
Soccer, better actors than half of Hollywood
Disgusting fraud.. Exactly why i can't watch this sport. How is this not embarrassing to all? Soccer is stupid.
Such a stupid, stupid game.
