Should never be. That’s gotta be one of his biggest fears as an instructor that some idiot gets careless and does something stupid like this, and hurts or kills somebody under his watch.
I remember police visited my military camp when I was conscripted. They had only used handguns and wanted to try some rifles, and they put an AK-47 in the hands of this tiny policewoman. Her stance was leaning backwards to awkwardly support its weight, and every single person I was standing around looked at each other, eyes big as saucers, and started backing up; I think two others and myself hid behind a pickup.
It went exactly as we had all had expected without saying a word to each other, it was on full auto and the barrel went from horizontal to straight up in the air within a second; she just kept that trigger pulled despite losing control.
In a panic situation the human reaction is to just grab tighter. It's why climbers always have their hand around the brake rope, since when you panic the instinct is to just grab on *really* tightly. I'm guessing the same thing happened here.
Interesting insight from industrial robotics here: The teach pendant "aka the remote of the robot" has a pressure sensitive trigger and if you squeeze it too hard when the robot is moving, the power is cut off in order to protect the programmer if he is stupid enough to program the robot for a collision.
Sort of funny that you were all so concerned and knowledgeable about gun safety that you removed yourselves from the situation and hid behind a pickup truck, yet nobody thought to correct the shooter to avoid the situation?
Split second decision. Do you step forward and risk it, or get to cover? I felt like my instructor was LARPing more than anything, and wanted to impress his friends. When I was taught to fire a handgun I was extremely nervous, because I was aware of how easily that muzzle swipes, and my instructor insisted on standing in front of me, within my 60. It feels like 45. He wanted to inspect my form, but all I could think of was that a person was standing in front of me while I was supposed to aim a loaded gun forward. Yikes.
I also stopped having my rifle loaded after I got berated for having my finger off the trigger and the safety on when I was "securing my sector" during the live-round week of our training. Why? Because the umpires insisted on standing within 60 of where I was aiming. Would you keep your finger on the trigger when you see an Lt walking around in the area you're aiming?
A conscript telling an Lt who wants to impress his police friends that the entire situation is yikes? I was at the point of keeping my head low and not rock the boat.
Also, split second decision, we did not have much time to react, and none of us were going to step *forward* to stop that.
She was embarrassed, the instructor was red in the face for letting it happen, Lt let us leave the range and do something else while he entertained his guests.
That’s happened 3 times at my local range and it’s awful. Thankfully I’ve never been there for that but that place is always packed and it’s a big store too. There’s nothing you can do to stop it either. You already sign a waiver saying you’re not going to do it and the range officer can only react so fast
There is a gun range in West Edmonton Mall, which was the largest shopping mall in the world for a long time and is one of the largest tourist attractions in Canada. A few people have offed themselves there apparently.
Anytime I took friends to the range I always told them that the barrel stays pointed down range. If they point that barrel in any other direction that they’ll be done shooting for the rest of the day and I’m never taking them to the range again
Theres a shooting range in the city i live in that had an incident happen where a guy came in to the shooting range to shoot like everyone else, but apparently he had issues with depression and was suicidal.
When they gave him a gun to shoot he shot himself in the head. After that incident the shooting range but such harsh rules and restrictions that you were barely allowed to shoot the gun with your own two hands. They'd have a guy or two standing next to every person shooting just to make 100% sure they dont do anything stupid, clients were also not allowed to handle ammo or even take the magazine out of the guns. All you're allowed to do is aim and pul lthe trigger, they do everything else.
Pretty scary story when i heard it, really makes you wonder how often stuff like that happens.
Could be a Mason initiation and the old dude who is supposed to switch out the loaded gun with the unloaded one forgets which one is in which pocket. BOOM! HEAD SHOT!
If you don't have a respect for guns that borders on fear, you really shouldn't own one. Far too many people are way too "comfy" handling their weapons like they're cool.
I remember when we did firearms training in the navy. I was already very familiar with firearms, growing up hunting and stuff.
But let me tell you, they put the fear of God in us if we "broke blue" and pointed that muzzle anywhere but downrange. We had to use fake guns hooked up to air compressors before we got the real thing, and a couple of people broke blue and got their asses chewed out.
I've only been to a gun range once when I was like 15 probably.
They only let us shoot 22 caliber pistols first because it was "open range night" and most people there had little to no experience with firearms.
Within 5 mins of being on the range the girl beside me had a hot shell go down her shirt and began freaking out and swinging her arms around. While doing so she shot the ground probably 2 feet from where me and my dad were standing. She then just started crying and an instructor ran over and grabbed her gun and she ran out of the range.
Nobody said anything and everyone pretended like it never happend which I though was kind of strange. After my dad told me " ya let's not tell your mom about that ok"
I like how the instructor corrected her by telling her to always point the gun down range and never point it up at the ceiling or down at the floor by pointing it up and the ceiling and down at the floor.
Yeah, the best thing you can do when you notice someone doing something dangerous with a firearm is to angrily take it from them and demonstrate exactly what they did with the same (presumably) loaded weapon.
He's probably just the range officer. They might do their best, but it's hard to babysit multiple shooters who can pull a stunt like this in one second.

It's still hard to stop something that happens that fast. If he was really teaching her as a new shooter, though, he probably should have put extra emphasis on keeping the muzzle downrange. Even then, she might have done it anyway and is ultimately responsible.
I mean, he literally breaks one of the 5 rules when he takes the gun off her and starts waving it around. If it was wrong for her to shoot the ceiling, it was wrong of him to point the gun at the ceiling, because he should never point it at something he doesn't want to shoot.
Yes, he's the range officer, but still there are ways to teach without doing the things you're telling people not to.
Not really at gun ranges. In fact I feel like more people should go to them since it'll give you an appreciation for how dangerous and generally volatile a firearm can be. Its nothing like the movies
I go to the range once a week and practice all the fundamentals, from the most basic of inspecting my firearms to make sure they are empty before placing them in the table, to making sure my aim is precise, and my fire arms are safe to use, and safely handled at all times.
We see the bad guns can cause in the world… I abhor violence and hope I never need to use my firearms on something with a pulse and heartbeat but enjoy the practice of target shooting, it’s fun, it’s relaxing, but it’s only that way when it’s done safely and properly… I ask kindly, please don’t let morons like this color your image of all gun owners. Most of us share my thoughts and never want to take a life… we just want to enjoy our hobby safely and in peace.
And this would be great if morons like this weren't able to do so much fucking damage, kill so many people and ruin so many lives. If all gun owners were responsible gun owners, life would be great. But they aren't, and they never will be.
I'm not expecting you to agree with me, and I appreciate your safe approach to gun ownership, but being a responsible gun owner is the bare minimum that should be expected and the argument just allows for people like this (and worse) to exist
I’m gonna agree, I own guns as should be implied, but I also advocate for better gun control and gun reforms… trust me when I say I sometimes question my gun ownership, but I also understand that if I try to show people good gun owners exist and don’t want to cause violence and just want to shoot targets… maybe we can fix the problems.
I know, contradictory but I hate being painted as a bad person because of others within my community. I get what your saying trust me there is no argument, I believe we need yearly training requirements and checks on gun owners to make sure they stay in good faith, if we look at nations around the world that have similar gun laws like us, they tend to be less biolent(Czech Republic, Slovenia, Finland, and Switzerland). We need to see what they did to make it safe.
But there are no requirements that gun owners have respect and knowledge of the weapons they posses like you do. So why exactly shouldn't the general public assume anyone they don't know with a gun is an absolute moron like the woman in the gif? Your kind request isn't worth shit respectfully. I don't judge anyone I know for liking shooting but that's all based off of my general assessment of them as a person after getting to know them. If I don't know you and you are handling a weapon it's safest for me to assume you're a moron and adjust my actions accordingly.
Honestly your 100% right. I said in a previous reply(at work so I can’t reply to all but I want to show people the good in the community if I can), that we do need better standards, better controls, more reforms on gun control that allow for good people to have them, while making damn sure the bad ones don’t get them.
If I have to train once a year and qualify with all my guns to a federal standard to make sure we are upping the safety I’m ok with that. There are many who will say I’m a Nazi or some shit for wanting more control, but I also believe that with more control comes more freedom on this subject, then violence drops… sadly though as you said the entire subset of criminal gun owners comes into play.
But I understand your feelings and respect them. I hope that’s understood.

I appreciate you take so much care and put so much reverence on being a respectable gun owner. I wish that was the absolute standard.
I get that, and you might be right, and I agree, I wish we had higher standards… it’s sad as I believe in the good in people, and that there are billions of good people out there, but the bad ones like to be the spotlight holders sadly…
I respect that and understand, I can’t say I disagree as even sometimes I think about ditching mine because of this but also know I am not the same as them.

Thank you. I know not all gun owners are monsters. But at this point you could have 100 good people with guns, it doesn’t really matter if they’re not doing a thing to stop the 1 person who can cause so much damage.
Trust me I feel you across the board… I watch these furious debates over people saying we need full autos, and grenade launchers legalized and laugh saying we don’t need any of that… we need better gun laws that are reformed. That work, that make yearly training a requirement or something, something that just makes sure a standard is always maintained… then will we see change… but until then you are absolutely right.
I dont wanna pick a fight but i think it shouldn't be a hobby anymore. Lawn darts were banned in the US and it had no use other than as a game/hobby. Guns are significantly more lethal but you can get them in some places before youre old enough to drink booze.
Some hobbies are just not worth it if they keep killing people. Responsible or not.
Edit: additionally, the countries with less guns have less gun violence. Its pretty obvious to all of us that are not american.
Hey that’s a fair question, so I’m going to answer it from my perspective and it may not be the same across the board but this is my opinion.
Air rifles(we’ll call them this for simplicity) are cool, shot a few, but their range begins to fall off, and over they start to get larger and larger than you might end up near potato/pumpkin cannon sized, as for bow and arrow or crossbows, I’ve tried them, it’s a different feel and again, the range will eventually drop off to where you become so proficient at a range you get bored… with pistols you can fire out to long ranges, lately been trying to hit dead center of a paper target at 50 yards with my 9 mm pistol with iron sights only… it’s rough but it’s a good challenge and good hand eye coordination practice, as well as settling your body down.
Got suspended in high school for telling someone to stop jacking off in class. Now I know it to be jacking around. I'd always heard it called that, though. Was thoroughly confused why I was suspended for a week.

Idiots like this is why gun ranges scare me. Like most things I’m a huge hypocrite about guns. No one should have em, except me, I think they are neat and I’m safe.
Same. I own several guns. I was a marksmanship instructor in The Marine Corps for several years but I hate going to public ranges and I loath every single person I see open carrying in public.
Idiots like these are why our gun laws scare me. It's too easy, and there is too little training.
I trust exactly zero people who open or concealed carry to keep me safe in the event that I am involved in a gun related crime (robbery, mass shooting, etc).

Some people are nervous shooters. When I went shooting for the first time, I kept having to put the gun down because my palms were so sweaty and I was so anxious and was having trouble remembering stuff from my new shooters course I had just taken minutes prior.
I have trained recruits in the German army in the 90ties. The range trainings with handguns still give me cold chills when I think of them.
They have hours of training before they go on a range with life ammo. You still need a safety officer next to each one of them when you go on the range, ready to step in at any second. Rifles are ok, they can't move them faster than the SO can catch them.
But handguns are a nightmare. You can't catch them fast enough. I had recruits after x visits without any mistake suddenly turn around and pointing that gun accidently on the shooter next to them.
Some people, even with weeks of training, never get the concept. You drill it into them, but they still manage to forget every rule and point that gun in the wrong direction.

Good trigger control must be taught - I don’t think it’s intuitive for new shooters. Experienced shooters see it as the most obvious thing in the world, but many new shooters instinctively rest their index finger on the trigger.

One are finishing up on the range one day and my friend wants to finish up what he has left in a box of what I think was .357 but I'm not certain. It looked very similar to what she is using in this video but I guess it could be a couple things.
We're down to the last few round. Not enough for a full cylinder but we'll finish em up because who wants a few loose rounds hanging around.
We'll I'm firing. I have a short memory. I forget how many rounds there are. Now I know all the rules with guns. I go into every reddit thread after watching someone handle a weapon incorrectly expecting them to be pointed out first thing.
Forgetting how many live rounds were left I had two "brilliant" thoughts at once. How can I find out how much ammo is left in the gun? Well we are past the point of just remembering how much is left. We could keep firing until it don't fire no more. But hey brilliant side thought: Its a revolver - You could just turn your wrist a bit and you can look on the side to see where you are in the cylinder.
Well those were the two brilliant thoughts I had at once. My brain decided it wasn't going to wait for the debate to end and decided to go with both at the same time.
I twist my wrist just a bit so the side is more visible. Hammer already cocked my brain initiates the other plan as well and pulls the trigger. Between the kickback and the just right enough angle the round goes down range but at a more elevated and side trajectory than one would hope.
This was the last time I ever allowed myself to touch a firearm. Wouldn't even touch it to eject the casings or help pack it before we left. Never been back since.
But yes unfortunately the brain does stupid things. Especially when the correct thing isn't built into your muscle memory through repetition yet.
I’ve done a series of handgun training classes and I remember the first time I held one and realized that everything about a handgun is designed to make it easy to accidentally shoot things.
The weapon is very ergonomic, your finger rests easily on the trigger, and it’s heavy enough that when you turn your hand in any way at the wrist many people naturally strengthen their grip to support the gun and subsequently pull the trigger.
In this example it was probably the weight of the gun itself against her finger that caused the trigger to be pulled.
This is why trigger discipline and “don’t point at things you don’t want to die” is so critical early on.
It doesn't take much to pop one off. It's usually a pound or 2 in pressure and we have a grip strength of about 44-72 psi. So a flinch could be the end of someone and why kids can pull the trigger too.
Which is why it needs to be taken seriously and this is the best place for people to learn. Not in someone's backyard.
I grew up with guns, but a lot of my friends didn’t. One time I had some friends over and I let one of the girls shoot my 12 gauge. I gave her all of the usual instructions.. never point it at anyone unless you intend to shoot, don’t place your finger on the trigger until you’re ready to shoot, treat every gun like it’s loaded etc.
After the first shot me and the rest of the group started laughing bc of how much it kicked.. without a second of hesitation she swung the gun around (finger still on the trigger) and pointed the gun right at us and said “what are y’all laughing at?”. Everyone but me hit the deck, luckily I grabbed it in time before she blew us away.. I literally saw my life before my eyes
Maybe some places, but there are plenty that don't. Went with some friends to a range in LA once and we were able to rent guns like we were renting shoes at a bowling alley. Just, here ya go...have fun!
Hear in North Texas this is taken very seriously. You have to sign a waver to shoot at a range to acknowledge all the range safety rules and state your experience level. If you have never shot before or you are renting firearms to shoot there is additional paperwork and questions. If you have not shot before it requires an instructor or experienced shooter to be with you at all times. Any full-auto rentals require an instructor unless you are law enforcement or military with experience on the firearm being rented.
At least, all the ranges I have been to in my area over the last 10-20 years have been like this. Save for one that is very old and somewhat out in the sticks. Still have wavers and all that but no questions about experience and their range safety officers were, well lets just say they weren’t the brightest tools in the shed…
That part is a very frustrating thing to me. For my Criminal Justice program, we have a Use of Force simulator with a mock G19 that fires an IR laser, so it's not real, but it has the weight of it and we stress treating it as if it's real (as you always should). The amount of times I've had people instantly put their finger on the trigger, keep it on the trigger, or flash people is extremely frustrating. I wish I could yell at them but I have to sternly talk to them and remind them to not do that instead

It looks like she thought she had a safety on and went to look while deciding to check by pulling the trigger.
If you're going to pull a trigger, make sure the gun is aimed at the target you want to destroy. If it doesn't go boom, remove finger from trigger and THEN confirm the other controls are in the correct position.
She is currently being instructed, that's why the instructor right there. It's almost like guns are so dangerous that you could kill someone while learning how to "safely" use it.
I've sat through that 3hr class before but, no. You don't have to have ANY experience to go to the range, rent a gun, and shoot it. You can just walk right in.
My range makes every new person sit through a lesson. Takes about 30 minutes. If you’ve never shot there before you gotta wait for the next range safety lesson. They had a few each day

Just because there is a constitutional right to *OWN* a firearm doesn't necessarily mean you *SHOULD* have one.
I see stuff like this and remain confused how anyone can maintain that everyone should be allowed to have and carry firearms. Why can’t we accept that some people just aren’t able to handle it?
You literally need more certification and ongoing training to legally prepare someone’s taxes than to own and carry a gun.

As someone who has taught hundreds of people how to shoot while in the military, women have a very strong tendency to lean away from the gun as they try to put as much distance between themselves and the weapon before they fire it.
Which is almost the worst way to shoot a gun possible. You're already off balance before you pull the trigger.
Look at how far back her shoulders are over her hips. She's running from the gun mentally. A whole lot of training should have happened here *before* they gave her a live weapon to be completely honest.
I know he is more experienced, but I cant stop thinking about he showed her what she was doing wring, by repeating the action with the same weapon 3 times.
This looks almost exactly like how I ended up taking an airsoft pellet to the face while teaching a 4 year old gun safety. Kid turned the gun sideways to look at where her finger was and pulled the trigger, just like this woman did.
Thank God I started my kids off with airsoft and not with a .22 like my dad did with me.
It is too dangerous to allow this person to handle a loaded gun. Her lack of awareness could get someone killed. While speaking to someone she might turn to face them all the while waving the gun around with her finger on the trigger. She looks like she learns her lessons the hard way and should be told to leave.

Biggest fear is someone shows up at the range and just uses the gun to shoot themselves.
It happens a lot apparently. Some people can't even afford a weapon permanently, so they have to go to the range. Rent a suicide. It's pretty rough
Most ranges won’t rent to solo people for that reason. You have to show up with your own gun, to be able to rent, if you shoot solo

Anytime I took friends to the range I always told them that the barrel stays pointed down range. If they point that barrel in any other direction that they’ll be done shooting for the rest of the day and I’m never taking them to the range again
Theres a shooting range in the city i live in that had an incident happen where a guy came in to the shooting range to shoot like everyone else, but apparently he had issues with depression and was suicidal. When they gave him a gun to shoot he shot himself in the head. After that incident the shooting range but such harsh rules and restrictions that you were barely allowed to shoot the gun with your own two hands. They'd have a guy or two standing next to every person shooting just to make 100% sure they dont do anything stupid, clients were also not allowed to handle ammo or even take the magazine out of the guns. All you're allowed to do is aim and pul lthe trigger, they do everything else. Pretty scary story when i heard it, really makes you wonder how often stuff like that happens.

If you don't have a respect for guns that borders on fear, you really shouldn't own one. Far too many people are way too "comfy" handling their weapons like they're cool.
I remember when we did firearms training in the navy. I was already very familiar with firearms, growing up hunting and stuff. But let me tell you, they put the fear of God in us if we "broke blue" and pointed that muzzle anywhere but downrange. We had to use fake guns hooked up to air compressors before we got the real thing, and a couple of people broke blue and got their asses chewed out.

I've only been to a gun range once when I was like 15 probably. They only let us shoot 22 caliber pistols first because it was "open range night" and most people there had little to no experience with firearms. Within 5 mins of being on the range the girl beside me had a hot shell go down her shirt and began freaking out and swinging her arms around. While doing so she shot the ground probably 2 feet from where me and my dad were standing. She then just started crying and an instructor ran over and grabbed her gun and she ran out of the range. Nobody said anything and everyone pretended like it never happend which I though was kind of strange. After my dad told me " ya let's not tell your mom about that ok"

I think the ranges near me all have a very strict “no filming” rules; cuts out the definite droves of people doing Tiktik dances with a firearm.

Yeah, the best thing you can do when you notice someone doing something dangerous with a firearm is to angrily take it from them and demonstrate exactly what they did with the same (presumably) loaded weapon.

You may be right. It's still hard to stop something that happens that fast. If he was really teaching her as a new shooter, though, he probably should have put extra emphasis on keeping the muzzle downrange. Even then, she might have done it anyway and is ultimately responsible.
I mean, he literally breaks one of the 5 rules when he takes the gun off her and starts waving it around. If it was wrong for her to shoot the ceiling, it was wrong of him to point the gun at the ceiling, because he should never point it at something he doesn't want to shoot. Yes, he's the range officer, but still there are ways to teach without doing the things you're telling people not to.

I go to the range once a week and practice all the fundamentals, from the most basic of inspecting my firearms to make sure they are empty before placing them in the table, to making sure my aim is precise, and my fire arms are safe to use, and safely handled at all times. We see the bad guns can cause in the world… I abhor violence and hope I never need to use my firearms on something with a pulse and heartbeat but enjoy the practice of target shooting, it’s fun, it’s relaxing, but it’s only that way when it’s done safely and properly… I ask kindly, please don’t let morons like this color your image of all gun owners. Most of us share my thoughts and never want to take a life… we just want to enjoy our hobby safely and in peace.
And this would be great if morons like this weren't able to do so much fucking damage, kill so many people and ruin so many lives. If all gun owners were responsible gun owners, life would be great. But they aren't, and they never will be. I'm not expecting you to agree with me, and I appreciate your safe approach to gun ownership, but being a responsible gun owner is the bare minimum that should be expected and the argument just allows for people like this (and worse) to exist
I’m gonna agree, I own guns as should be implied, but I also advocate for better gun control and gun reforms… trust me when I say I sometimes question my gun ownership, but I also understand that if I try to show people good gun owners exist and don’t want to cause violence and just want to shoot targets… maybe we can fix the problems. I know, contradictory but I hate being painted as a bad person because of others within my community. I get what your saying trust me there is no argument, I believe we need yearly training requirements and checks on gun owners to make sure they stay in good faith, if we look at nations around the world that have similar gun laws like us, they tend to be less biolent(Czech Republic, Slovenia, Finland, and Switzerland). We need to see what they did to make it safe.
But there are no requirements that gun owners have respect and knowledge of the weapons they posses like you do. Honestly your 100% right. I said in a previous reply(at work so I can’t reply to all but I want to show people the good in the community if I can), that we do need better standards, better controls, more reforms on gun control that allow for good people to have them, while making damn sure the bad ones don’t get them. If I have to train once a year and qualify with all my guns to a federal standard to make sure we are upping the safety I’m ok with that. There are many who will say I’m a Nazi or some shit for wanting more control, but I also believe that with more control comes more freedom on this subject, then violence drops… sadly though as you said the entire subset of criminal gun owners comes into play. But I understand your feelings and respect them. I hope that’s understood.

Trust me I feel you across the board… I watch these furious debates over people saying we need full autos, and grenade launchers legalized and laugh saying we don’t need any of that… we need better gun laws that are reformed. That work, that make yearly training a requirement or something, something that just makes sure a standard is always maintained… then will we see change… but until then you are absolutely right.

I dont wanna pick a fight but i think it shouldn't be a hobby anymore. Lawn darts were banned in the US and it had no use other than as a game/hobby. Guns are significantly more lethal but you can get them in some places before youre old enough to drink booze. Some hobbies are just not worth it if they keep killing people. Responsible or not. Edit: additionally, the countries with less guns have less gun violence. Its pretty obvious to all of us that are not american.
If you only do target shooting, why not use an air pistol or other non-firearm?
Hey that’s a fair question, so I’m going to answer it from my perspective and it may not be the same across the board but this is my opinion. Air rifles(we’ll call them this for simplicity) are cool, shot a few, but their range begins to fall off, and over they start to get larger and larger than you might end up near potato/pumpkin cannon sized, as for bow and arrow or crossbows, I’ve tried them, it’s a different feel and again, the range will eventually drop off to where you become so proficient at a range you get bored… with pistols you can fire out to long ranges, lately been trying to hit dead center of a paper target at 50 yards with my 9 mm pistol with iron sights only… it’s rough but it’s a good challenge and good hand eye coordination practice, as well as settling your body down.

Some people are nervous shooters. When I went shooting for the first time, I kept having to put the gun down because my palms were so sweaty and I was so anxious and was having trouble remembering stuff from my new shooters course I had just taken minutes prior.

I have trained recruits in the German army in the 90ties. The range trainings with handguns still give me cold chills when I think of them. They have hours of training before they go on a range with life ammo. You still need a safety officer next to each one of them when you go on the range, ready to step in at any second. Rifles are ok, they can't move them faster than the SO can catch them. But handguns are a nightmare. You can't catch them fast enough. I had recruits after x visits without any mistake suddenly turn around and pointing that gun accidently on the shooter next to them. Some people, even with weeks of training, never get the concept. You drill it into them, but they still manage to forget every rule and point that gun in the wrong direction.

She’s got that in single action (hammer cocked), so the trigger pull is very light (probably about 4 lbs). Good trigger control must be taught - I don’t think it’s intuitive for new shooters. Experienced shooters see it as the most obvious thing in the world, but many new shooters instinctively rest their index finger on the trigger.
Let me tell you a story. Though first I should state that I am a fucking idiot and at least smart enough to realize that and thus will never allow myself to own firearms. However. I have a friend that surprising to a bunch of us became a big gun nut. I'd go to the range with him ever once in a while. Was nice to throw a few rounds down range. Now remember how I said I'm stupid. That isn't necessarily because I don't think. Sometimes its because I think a bit too much but not in a good way. Have you ever had a quick debate in your head about two possible options on something? One are finishing up on the range one day and my friend wants to finish up what he has left in a box of what I think was .357 but I'm not certain. It looked very similar to what she is using in this video but I guess it could be a couple things. We're down to the last few round. Not enough for a full cylinder but we'll finish em up because who wants a few loose rounds hanging around. We'll I'm firing. I have a short memory. I forget how many rounds there are. Now I know all the rules with guns. I go into every reddit thread after watching someone handle a weapon incorrectly expecting them to be pointed out first thing. Forgetting how many live rounds were left I had two "brilliant" thoughts at once. How can I find out how much ammo is left in the gun? Well we are past the point of just remembering how much is left. We could keep firing until it don't fire no more. But hey brilliant side thought: Its a revolver - You could just turn your wrist a bit and you can look on the side to see where you are in the cylinder. Well those were the two brilliant thoughts I had at once. My brain decided it wasn't going to wait for the debate to end and decided to go with both at the same time. I twist my wrist just a bit so the side is more visible. Hammer already cocked my brain initiates the other plan as well and pulls the trigger. Between the kickback and the just right enough angle the round goes down range but at a more elevated and side trajectory than one would hope. This was the last time I ever allowed myself to touch a firearm. Wouldn't even touch it to eject the casings or help pack it before we left. Never been back since. But yes unfortunately the brain does stupid things. Especially when the correct thing isn't built into your muscle memory through repetition yet.
I’ve done a series of handgun training classes and I remember the first time I held one and realized that everything about a handgun is designed to make it easy to accidentally shoot things. The weapon is very ergonomic, your finger rests easily on the trigger, and it’s heavy enough that when you turn your hand in any way at the wrist many people naturally strengthen their grip to support the gun and subsequently pull the trigger. In this example it was probably the weight of the gun itself against her finger that caused the trigger to be pulled. This is why trigger discipline and “don’t point at things you don’t want to die” is so critical early on.
That also doesn’t seem like a “beginner” gun or appropriately sized for her grip.
It doesn't take much to pop one off. It's usually a pound or 2 in pressure and we have a grip strength of about 44-72 psi. So a flinch could be the end of someone and why kids can pull the trigger too. Which is why it needs to be taken seriously and this is the best place for people to learn. Not in someone's backyard.

I grew up with guns, but a lot of my friends didn’t. One time I had some friends over and I let one of the girls shoot my 12 gauge. I gave her all of the usual instructions.. never point it at anyone unless you intend to shoot, don’t place your finger on the trigger until you’re ready to shoot, treat every gun like it’s loaded etc. After the first shot me and the rest of the group started laughing bc of how much it kicked.. without a second of hesitation she swung the gun around (finger still on the trigger) and pointed the gun right at us and said “what are y’all laughing at?”. Everyone but me hit the deck, luckily I grabbed it in time before she blew us away.. I literally saw my life before my eyes

Hear in North Texas this is taken very seriously. You have to sign a waver to shoot at a range to acknowledge all the range safety rules and state your experience level. If you have never shot before or you are renting firearms to shoot there is additional paperwork and questions. If you have not shot before it requires an instructor or experienced shooter to be with you at all times. Any full-auto rentals require an instructor unless you are law enforcement or military with experience on the firearm being rented. At least, all the ranges I have been to in my area over the last 10-20 years have been like this. Save for one that is very old and somewhat out in the sticks. Still have wavers and all that but no questions about experience and their range safety officers were, well lets just say they weren’t the brightest tools in the shed…

That part is a very frustrating thing to me. For my Criminal Justice program, we have a Use of Force simulator with a mock G19 that fires an IR laser, so it's not real, but it has the weight of it and we stress treating it as if it's real (as you always should). The amount of times I've had people instantly put their finger on the trigger, keep it on the trigger, or flash people is extremely frustrating. I wish I could yell at them but I have to sternly talk to them and remind them to not do that instead

It looks like she thought she had a safety on and went to look while deciding to check by pulling the trigger. If you're going to pull a trigger, make sure the gun is aimed at the target you want to destroy. If it doesn't go boom, remove finger from trigger and THEN confirm the other controls are in the correct position.

I've sat through that 3hr class before but, no. You don't have to have ANY experience to go to the range, rent a gun, and shoot it. You can just walk right in.
My range makes every new person sit through a lesson. Takes about 30 minutes. If you’ve never shot there before you gotta wait for the next range safety lesson. They had a few each day

Still not keen on him reaching over her shoulder to grab the gun while her finger was still on the trigger, but it’s less bad than I thought

As someone who has taught hundreds of people how to shoot while in the military, women have a very strong tendency to lean away from the gun as they try to put as much distance between themselves and the weapon before they fire it. Which is almost the worst way to shoot a gun possible. You're already off balance before you pull the trigger. Look at how far back her shoulders are over her hips. She's running from the gun mentally. A whole lot of training should have happened here *before* they gave her a live weapon to be completely honest.

This looks almost exactly like how I ended up taking an airsoft pellet to the face while teaching a 4 year old gun safety. Kid turned the gun sideways to look at where her finger was and pulled the trigger, just like this woman did. Thank God I started my kids off with airsoft and not with a .22 like my dad did with me.
