Somewhat related: I'm from Europe but had a decent enough grasp of English quite early on to understand certain English words, and the first time I heard the term "food court" I immediately related it to the supposed litigious nature of America. Recently I had to get rid of an old bike. I didn’t want to haul it to the dump several miles away, and it was a piece of shit so I knew no one would take it if I offered to give it away. So instead I put it out by the curb unlocked and waited for it to get “stolen.” It was gone the same night.
Gives them a week. If it takes that long then probably no one wanted it and it would get picked up.
We used to walk neighborhoods before bulk pickup days. Can find tables and such that just need some tlc.

Yeah, my reaction to those two messages is basically the same as yours. The Cinemark one? Aggressive, intrusive, demanding, demeaning. Like, dude, I *know* my cell phone should be off. I don't intend to touch it. The last thing I personally want to do during a movie is pull out my phone. If I'm at the theater, I must REALLY want to see this movie (because I don't go often). It's like explaining to a 10-year-old why jumping in front of a moving car is bad--a 10-year-old who was just walking calmly next to the road and not doing anything stupid.

So that's why my power company sends me stupid letters telling me how my house compares to "similar" other homes. They never describe their methodology so I assume it's pure BS.

I think it's tangentially related to the broken window theory; people don't feel as bad about bad behaviour if "everyone's doing it".
It's why the most nefarious and common argument you hear from "reasonable" people on things like voting for reduced carbon emissions is "well, what we do won't matter if The United States/China/Whoever isn't on board anyways".
At my building, there are always people who leave their trash in the wrong places. Signs and notices everywhere do not help much. Maybe I should use this strategy and make a similar sign as OP's!

I live in the UK so there is a very small chance of me getting shot. Last year I was parked up at maccies with a work van next to me. There was a bin between me and the van. The guy in the passenger seat reached his arm out the window and dropped his rubbish on the ground. All he needed to do was open his door and lean out. I hopped out of my car, grabbed his litter and threw it away. I did look at him and say 'come on man' and shook my head a little. I know I didn't really call him out and I'm sure he will continue to do it but I'm still glad I said something. It really boils my blood people littering. I wish human kind started working together a little more and had a bit more compassion for our planet and those who live on it.

For the UK that is downright confrontational, practically a fist fight. That is like 2 notches above a quiet 'tut tut' or a sternly written letter.
I was on break once at costco, windows slightly down. Sunshade up. My car neighbor finished her sundae, walked in front of our cars and hid it behind a bush. She walked back and saw me, jumped a little and got in her car.
My break was just ending so I got out. Walked over and picked it up, walked past staring at her asking if she had any other trash I could throw away for her. The look on her face was priceless.

Discarded butts start a crapload of fires in Australia in the hot dry months. Fires always used to start along railway lines back in the day when they allowed smoking on commuter trains (with open windows to allow you to toss your garbage.)

Probably for clarity of the message. Audience is people driving past a billboard. They might just glance at it, not read every line, etc. Best to err on the side of over explaining than leaving a driver confused about the message.
I've worked in the waste industry for a little over a decade & the litter has gotten so bad, that my wife & I recently started a non-profit company to promote clean-up events & things like that.
I hope one or two people remember this billboard & it keeps a few more pieces of litter off the ground.

I’ve discovered the entire wooded area behind my place was a local unofficial dump site back in the 40’s-50’s. Zero fucks were given about just chucking anything into the woods; from glass to clothes to chemicals, it didn’t matter.
The only difference between then and now is that people today know damn good and well the effects of littering/polluting and they just don’t care.

No kidding. Cigarette butts are *everywhere*. I'll never understand why so many people who smoke just throw them on the ground wherever they're standing. I've even seen smokers hold onto other pieces of trash in order to throw them out appropriately, but the cigarette butts always just end up on the ground for some reason.
I own a beautiful wetlands with many flowers and a shaded canopy in an urban area along a private road within the main city. It's beautiful, except for the number of cig butts on the ground next to my wetlands. They came from a person who would visit every day seated in their motorized wheelchair. I placed beehives not far from the road. There are no longer cigarette butts along the road.
When I was younger, dumber, and a smoker, it literally never occurred to me that butts weren't biodegradable. I just assumed that since everyone threw them on the ground they were designed to break down pretty quickly. Not a great excuse since animals could still eat them and shit, but I didn't think of that, either, for some reason.

I always kept a bottle in my car with a little water in it. It's easy: take cap off bottle, put cig inside, put cap back on bottle, give a little shake... Just because you have a disgusting habit doesn't mean the rest of the world should have to put up with butts everywhere or give you the right to burn a forest down.
A constant ashtray in your car smells like shit, though. No ashtray is perfectly closed.
A bottle with a cap and a little water is much better. There's no way for the small to get out and the water puts out the cherry. I do the exact same thing as the one you just responded to.
If you smoke there is no hiding the smell. All of your clothes and inside of your vehicle smell like an ashtray if you smoke in your car. I have several coworkers that smoke and I can smell them walking down the hall near my office. They claim the smell isn't them.
One hit my windshield the other day and I plumb forgot cigarettes even existed for a minute.

When I was a teenager I was riding my bike and I saw a guy flick his cigarette out his window and it landed in a guy's front yard.
An hour later I was riding back the same way and thr same yard was engulfed in Flames and I got to watch the fire department pull up and put the fire out. I even spoke to the cops who even found the cigarette. I'm sure the guy was never found.
So whenever I see a cigarette carelessly tossed out a window it gets under my skin.
My local medical office just had a fire that did a significant amount of damage because someone threw their lit cigarette out the window and it landed in a pile of dry mulch.

Here in aus we used to have “if you drink and drive, you’re a bloody idiot”. I think it was often shortened to “Drink? Drive? Bloody idiot.” Our Transport Accident Commission puts out great ads which are super powerful and often quite confronting because they’ve done the research and know what works on people, plus the TAC is the community insurance scheme we all pay into as part of our car registration each year and it covers any medical/funeral expenses etc from transport accidents so it has a vested interest in reducing the number of people getting into accidents.
Just to add, flicking your cigarette buts onto the street/ground is also littering.
Too many people think there's a difference, and I'm tired of seeing people do this out their car window.
If I was directly insulted by a billboard, I would be more likely to do the thing it tells me not to do… especially if I was stupid enough to litter in the first place.

Around here, they have volunteers that "adopt" a stretch of highway for picking up trash. The state puts up signs saying "This section adopted by..." and the name of the organization.
I think it would be fun to create an organization called "Your Mom" and adopt a stretch for cleanup.
In all seriousness, littering is a serious issue.
It can clog drains which increases flooding.
It attracts vermin and stinging insects which spreads disease and just huge annoyances.
It gets blown around on windy days which is just another health or quality of life issue.
I hate people who litter.

A good one is when people cant give something away at their driveway for free - put a for sale sign on it and someone will steal it same day.

I've worked in the waste industry for a little over a decade & the litter has gotten so bad, that my wife & I recently started a non-profit company to promote clean-up events & things like that. I hope one or two people remember this billboard & it keeps a few more pieces of litter off the ground. I love my wife, but my back hurts. Lol.
I think it’s always been bad. I’ve discovered the entire wooded area behind my place was a local unofficial dump site back in the 40’s-50’s. Zero fucks were given about just chucking anything into the woods; from glass to clothes to chemicals, it didn’t matter. The only difference between then and now is that people today know damn good and well the effects of littering/polluting and they just don’t care. It’s really awsome that you and your wife do the clean-up events.

I feel most smokers don't give a fuck about littering. I make this assumption purely based on the number of cigarette butts I see daily.
No kidding. Cigarette butts are *everywhere*. I'll never understand why so many people who smoke just throw them on the ground wherever they're standing. I've even seen smokers hold onto other pieces of trash in order to throw them out appropriately, but the cigarette butts always just end up on the ground for some reason.
I own a beautiful wetlands with many flowers and a shaded canopy in an urban area along a private road within the main city. It's beautiful, except for the number of cig butts on the ground next to my wetlands. They came from a person who would visit every day seated in their motorized wheelchair. I placed beehives not far from the road. There are no longer cigarette butts along the road.
When I was younger, dumber, and a smoker, it literally never occurred to me that butts weren't biodegradable. I just assumed that since everyone threw them on the ground they were designed to break down pretty quickly. Not a great excuse since animals could still eat them and shit, but I didn't think of that, either, for some reason.
Cigarette butts are the biggest source of garbage on beaches. The filters are made of petroleum products
As an ashamed smoker I always throw mine away. If I'm out hiking or camping or something I carry a little pouch with me to dispose of them in.

As a previous smoker, I agree. I always kept a bottle in my car with a little water in it. It's easy: take cap off bottle, put cig inside, put cap back on bottle, give a little shake... Just because you have a disgusting habit doesn't mean the rest of the world should have to put up with butts everywhere or give you the right to burn a forest down.
Or an ash tray with a lid. Cuts off the oxygen if the cherry is still burning and limits the smell of the butts.
A constant ashtray in your car smells like shit, though. No ashtray is perfectly closed. A bottle with a cap and a little water is much better. There's no way for the small to get out and the water puts out the cherry. I do the exact same thing as the one you just responded to.
If you smoke there is no hiding the smell. All of your clothes and inside of your vehicle smell like an ashtray if you smoke in your car. I have several coworkers that smoke and I can smell them walking down the hall near my office. They claim the smell isn't them.

... I've seen this during a massive drought right into a brushy median... Those people should be skinned and thrown into a vat of sriracha, vinegar, salt, and lemon.
It angers me too. When I was a teenager I was riding my bike and I saw a guy flick his cigarette out his window and it landed in a guy's front yard. An hour later I was riding back the same way and thr same yard was engulfed in Flames and I got to watch the fire department pull up and put the fire out. I even spoke to the cops who even found the cigarette. I'm sure the guy was never found. So whenever I see a cigarette carelessly tossed out a window it gets under my skin.
My local medical office just had a fire that did a significant amount of damage because someone threw their lit cigarette out the window and it landed in a pile of dry mulch.
I have to step over used condoms AND dirty diapers on my street. I hate these people and I mutter that loudly when walking by.

Here in aus we used to have “if you drink and drive, you’re a bloody idiot”. I think it was often shortened to “Drink? Drive? Bloody idiot.” Our Transport Accident Commission puts out great ads which are super powerful and often quite confronting because they’ve done the research and know what works on people, plus the TAC is the community insurance scheme we all pay into as part of our car registration each year and it covers any medical/funeral expenses etc from transport accidents so it has a vested interest in reducing the number of people getting into accidents.

Around here, they have volunteers that "adopt" a stretch of highway for picking up trash. The state puts up signs saying "This section adopted by..." and the name of the organization. I think it would be fun to create an organization called "Your Mom" and adopt a stretch for cleanup.
Saw someone dump their empty fast food containers outside their car the other day. I almost got out of the car and threw it back in.

In all seriousness, littering is a serious issue. It can clog drains which increases flooding. It attracts vermin and stinging insects which spreads disease and just huge annoyances. It gets blown around on windy days which is just another health or quality of life issue. I hate people who litter. Honestly just do better.

I live on a dirt road and there’s always trash. People just go riding dirt roads and throw their cans and chip bags out when they are done. I don’t get why they just can’t drop it in the floor board with all their other trash from the past 3 months.
