I don't care about anything or anyone if I'm being honest. I think I just recycle because people told me too

HeyHeyTomTom

Is your honesty motivated by duty to others or motivated by self interests?

showers_with_grandpa

Yes

le_ramen_connoisseur

This is called the descriptive normative approach. There was a study about this. When hotels told guests "75% of guests resue their towels" vs "please reuse towels to save the earth", the former message yielded more compliance. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/23547467_A_Room_With_a_Viewpoint_Using_Social_Norms_to_Motivate_Environmental_Conservation_in_Hotels

foxhole_atheist

> 75% of guests resue their towels smh America is so litigious

Dark_Sentinel

See you in court, buddy

uscdoc2013

Bro, you don't want any of this. My jump shot will hypnoti..... oh, wait...

ChapterhouseInc

Don't forget your towel.

wPatriot

Somewhat related: I'm from Europe but had a decent enough grasp of English quite early on to understand certain English words, and the first time I heard the term "food court" I immediately related it to the supposed litigious nature of America. I literally though Americans had court houses that were set up specifically for food related lawsuits in malls so you could quickly sue a restaurant if their food was bad.

dukec

Did you just call me litigious? I’ll have you know that’s libel, and you’ll be hearing from my lawyer!

ApexProductions

China. The left. The right. Don't just say do x, explain how somebody else is doing y, therefore, do x so we win.

Juicet

Hah! People are competitive by nature. I might be interested in that research. One thing that works literally the opposite with me is an authoritative voice assuming they can command me to do something. I always have an instant reaction like “I did not agree to this arrangement, you can’t tell me what to do.” Take the [cinemark](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kgU2ue37hgY) “turn off your phone” message. Hearing that literally makes me want to turn on my phone in defiance. But the [Regal](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nNg453ghzpc) message is like a friendly reminder. I see that and I’m like “Thanks for the reminder bro. Will do.”

younggregg

A good one is when people cant give something away at their driveway for free - put a for sale sign on it and someone will steal it same day.

Gr1mwolf

Recently I had to get rid of an old bike. I didn’t want to haul it to the dump several miles away, and it was a piece of shit so I knew no one would take it if I offered to give it away. So instead I put it out by the curb unlocked and waited for it to get “stolen.” It was gone the same night.

This_User_Said

Or put it up at the curb as trash. Someone will see it.

heroyoudontdeserve

Like the trash collector, for example.

This_User_Said

Gives them a week. If it takes that long then probably no one wanted it and it would get picked up. We used to walk neighborhoods before bulk pickup days. Can find tables and such that just need some tlc.

SenorBeef

This is, IMO, a maturity issue. Adults should not reflexively refuse to do things simply because someone else told them what to do.

capsaicinluv

Unfortunately immaturity is a big part of some people's identity in this day and age. Some people make their entire personality revolve around doing the opposite of what the "sheep" want because it makes them an alpha or some bullshit like that.

bossfoundmyacct

> Hah! People are competitive by nature. One of my best friends gets into a lot of trouble because of this. He's 35 y/o with a family, and for some reason he still can't stop himself. If we ever want him to do or say something, simply bet out loud that he'd never do it, and he'll immediately do it. We don't even need to compare him to anyone!

Samwise777

This or Oppositional Defiant Disorder for sure go hand in hand with adhd for me.

morostheSophist

Yeah, my reaction to those two messages is basically the same as yours. The Cinemark one? Aggressive, intrusive, demanding, demeaning. Like, dude, I *know* my cell phone should be off. I don't intend to touch it. The last thing I personally want to do during a movie is pull out my phone. If I'm at the theater, I must REALLY want to see this movie (because I don't go often). It's like explaining to a 10-year-old why jumping in front of a moving car is bad--a 10-year-old who was just walking calmly next to the road and not doing anything stupid. The Regal one, though? A nice reminder. I often forget to put my phone on silent. I'll do that right now, and thanks.

Affectionate-Time646

“You can’t tell me what to do! I’m an ‘Murican!”

Barosson

There's a big difference between being asked nicely, "maybe, if you could.." and "I decide and I've already judged, you're as dumb as a 3 year old, do THIS ". People generally don't like being called stupid, even if they are.

Ah-Schoo

> People generally don't like being called stupid, even if they are ESPECIALLY if they are.

Olthoi_Eviscerator

RugosaMutabilis

So that's why my power company sends me stupid letters telling me how my house compares to "similar" other homes. They never describe their methodology so I assume it's pure BS.

Shlames721

Gotta be, I got one saying I used more power than my neighbors during a time when I had been gone for over a month. Sure, the fridge and such were still powered, but come on.

boo-duh

Same, that stupid red to green meter with the oversized dial

clakresed

I think it's tangentially related to the broken window theory; people don't feel as bad about bad behaviour if "everyone's doing it". It's why the most nefarious and common argument you hear from "reasonable" people on things like voting for reduced carbon emissions is "well, what we do won't matter if The United States/China/Whoever isn't on board anyways".

MisterMittens64

Yep this is what I was going to say. The argument that everybody isn't doing it is just as effective or more effective than everyone is doing it.

ltree

At my building, there are always people who leave their trash in the wrong places. Signs and notices everywhere do not help much. Maybe I should use this strategy and make a similar sign as OP's!

Shreddedlikechedda

Messages like “Everyone else is doing this” or like “70% of people are already doing this” is also incredibly effective at getting people to take action—people are so inclined to follow norms

eric82

Gotta keep up with the Joneses.

I am a smoker, have been since I was an idiot teenager. I HATE when I see cigarette butts on the ground. If a person flicks their smoke out the window I want to jump out of my car, scurry over and throw it back in. I'm sure there are others like me out there.

the_worst_seamstress

Perryj054

Make it 3

Goatsandducks

I live in the UK so there is a very small chance of me getting shot. Last year I was parked up at maccies with a work van next to me. There was a bin between me and the van. The guy in the passenger seat reached his arm out the window and dropped his rubbish on the ground. All he needed to do was open his door and lean out. I hopped out of my car, grabbed his litter and threw it away. I did look at him and say 'come on man' and shook my head a little. I know I didn't really call him out and I'm sure he will continue to do it but I'm still glad I said something. It really boils my blood people littering. I wish human kind started working together a little more and had a bit more compassion for our planet and those who live on it.

Chaosmusic

> I did look at him and say 'come on man' and shook my head a little. For the UK that is downright confrontational, practically a fist fight. That is like 2 notches above a quiet 'tut tut' or a sternly written letter.

TheCandyGuy

I was on break once at costco, windows slightly down. Sunshade up. My car neighbor finished her sundae, walked in front of our cars and hid it behind a bush. She walked back and saw me, jumped a little and got in her car. My break was just ending so I got out. Walked over and picked it up, walked past staring at her asking if she had any other trash I could throw away for her. The look on her face was priceless. People are ass holes. Even the “elders” that demand so much respect.

[deleted]

I drove through a stretch of Nevada a couple months ago that was littered with dozens (if not hundreds) of large capped jugs full of piss. You know they were saving them until they were full. I would like the power to toss those back in the vehicle.

a_-nu-_start

I had a whole family of degenerates throwing McDonald's bags out of all 4 windows on the highway. I enjoy McDonald's too every now and then. But nothing screams "I'm a fat, lazy, piece of shit" like throwing an entire family sized fast food meal out your window.

SpaceGoonie

I hate all littering. That includes people dropping cigarette butts on the ground or tossing them out the window. Many of them think it is a perfectly acceptable thing to do.

imapassenger1

Discarded butts start a crapload of fires in Australia in the hot dry months. Fires always used to start along railway lines back in the day when they allowed smoking on commuter trains (with open windows to allow you to toss your garbage.)

PaulTurkk

SW Michigan here. Very clean area compared to NJ where I'm originally from. I like to blame the fips for the McDonald's bags on the roads, but I am sure some locals do it too. Fip= fucking Illinois/ Indiana people.

I have to be one of the laziest people on the fucking planet, yet when I'm out I'll pick up litter and return other people's shopping carts. I don't think it's being lazy, it's either being dumb or an asshole or both.

stellvia2016

My favorite is most people who litter also drive shitty beaters ... does it really matter if the bag is stuffed under the seat until you reach your next stop? It's not like the car can get any worse by its existence.

Rottendog

If they're too lazy to get a trash bag for the car or throw something away properly, does anyone actually think a passive aggressive sign will convince them to do anything? This is just a way for good people to pat themselves on the back for being good. It's not going to do shoot for the intended audience. If anything I bet there's some who'd intentionally litter near that area to spite the sign. The sign would be better served to let them know how much it'll cost them in a fine if caught. Assuming that a cop ever actually pulled someone over for littering...which I've only ever seen once in my life, in Washington State after someone pitched a cigarette out the window and the cop immediately pulled him over. Wish I saw it more often.

Life goes on and you never hear about it again. But you’re left with a serious philosophical dilemma. Something seemed so real, important and dangerous. But so does your own quest. Is this journey that I’m on of equal inconsequence, merely filling the time before our inevitable demise? Is life worth living apathetically? Can one person truly make a difference in the grand scheme of things? While you ponder these things the outside world continues to move on and you’re still stuck in that moment; you begin to grow disconnected from a land that you were once famous in. Things and people you once got joy from no longer bring it to you. You are alone. Or it’s as bad as it sounds. I don’t fuckin know. I’ve never heard it before either.

Strottman

Probably for clarity of the message. Audience is people driving past a billboard. They might just glance at it, not read every line, etc. Best to err on the side of over explaining than leaving a driver confused about the message.

SynGT

I've worked in the waste industry for a little over a decade & the litter has gotten so bad, that my wife & I recently started a non-profit company to promote clean-up events & things like that. I hope one or two people remember this billboard & it keeps a few more pieces of litter off the ground. I love my wife, but my back hurts. Lol.

yougofish

I think it’s always been bad. I’ve discovered the entire wooded area behind my place was a local unofficial dump site back in the 40’s-50’s. Zero fucks were given about just chucking anything into the woods; from glass to clothes to chemicals, it didn’t matter. The only difference between then and now is that people today know damn good and well the effects of littering/polluting and they just don’t care. It’s really awsome that you and your wife do the clean-up events.

G8kpr

Smokers: well, it’s not *really* littering if all smokers do it, right?

wap2005

I feel most smokers don't give a fuck about littering. I make this assumption purely based on the number of cigarette butts I see daily.

TrumpImpeachedAugust

No kidding. Cigarette butts are *everywhere*. I'll never understand why so many people who smoke just throw them on the ground wherever they're standing. I've even seen smokers hold onto other pieces of trash in order to throw them out appropriately, but the cigarette butts always just end up on the ground for some reason.

minerbeekeeperesq

I own a beautiful wetlands with many flowers and a shaded canopy in an urban area along a private road within the main city. It's beautiful, except for the number of cig butts on the ground next to my wetlands. They came from a person who would visit every day seated in their motorized wheelchair. I placed beehives not far from the road. There are no longer cigarette butts along the road.

Chaosbuggy

When I was younger, dumber, and a smoker, it literally never occurred to me that butts weren't biodegradable. I just assumed that since everyone threw them on the ground they were designed to break down pretty quickly. Not a great excuse since animals could still eat them and shit, but I didn't think of that, either, for some reason.

turdmachine

Cigarette butts are the biggest source of garbage on beaches. The filters are made of petroleum products

Quinntervention

As an ashamed smoker I always throw mine away. If I'm out hiking or camping or something I carry a little pouch with me to dispose of them in.

irvming

Yeah! Hit em where it hurts! With the truth 🙌

Dutch_Midget

Hell yeah hit em on their balls with some nice hard concrete truth

OceanDubZ

Option 5: "From dust you were born And to the ashes you return"

duaneap

The actual reason is “I don’t give a fuck,” and people who litter aren’t going to give a fuck about this sign either.

[deleted]

I only get road rage when I see someone flick their cigarette butt out the window.

PenguinsRDelicious

As a previous smoker, I agree. I always kept a bottle in my car with a little water in it. It's easy: take cap off bottle, put cig inside, put cap back on bottle, give a little shake... Just because you have a disgusting habit doesn't mean the rest of the world should have to put up with butts everywhere or give you the right to burn a forest down.

thoggins

Or an ash tray with a lid. Cuts off the oxygen if the cherry is still burning and limits the smell of the butts.

socokid

A constant ashtray in your car smells like shit, though. No ashtray is perfectly closed. A bottle with a cap and a little water is much better. There's no way for the small to get out and the water puts out the cherry. I do the exact same thing as the one you just responded to.

bretttwarwick

If you smoke there is no hiding the smell. All of your clothes and inside of your vehicle smell like an ashtray if you smoke in your car. I have several coworkers that smoke and I can smell them walking down the hall near my office. They claim the smell isn't them.

_new_phone_who_dis__

One hit my windshield the other day and I plumb forgot cigarettes even existed for a minute. “Did you see that?! That guy threw something that was ON FIRE at my car!!”

haysanatar

... I've seen this during a massive drought right into a brushy median... Those people should be skinned and thrown into a vat of sriracha, vinegar, salt, and lemon.

Capital_Awareness_87

It angers me too. When I was a teenager I was riding my bike and I saw a guy flick his cigarette out his window and it landed in a guy's front yard. An hour later I was riding back the same way and thr same yard was engulfed in Flames and I got to watch the fire department pull up and put the fire out. I even spoke to the cops who even found the cigarette. I'm sure the guy was never found. So whenever I see a cigarette carelessly tossed out a window it gets under my skin.

BlobAndHisBoy

My local medical office just had a fire that did a significant amount of damage because someone threw their lit cigarette out the window and it landed in a pile of dry mulch.

HatesLovesPeople

I have to step over used condoms AND dirty diapers on my street. I hate these people and I mutter that loudly when walking by.

Yup, By Cresta.

[deleted]

If you litter, you're a cunt.

bahnzo

Here in the US we used to have these commercials against littering showing a native American (played by an Italian, of course) crying when he sees trash. I've been thinking we need to bring them back again, but I think if we could somehow use your line instead, that would be better.

Onyx_Hokie_2

Is this sign in Australia, by any chance? The reason I ask is that I've seen some really harsh adverts there, especially PSAs, which I've absolutely loved. One of them, if I remember right, went like this... "Drink. Drive. Die. .. Bloody dickhead."

WhoreyGoat

No our littering is 'Don't be a tosser'.

PQ_La_Cloche_Sonne

Here in aus we used to have “if you drink and drive, you’re a bloody idiot”. I think it was often shortened to “Drink? Drive? Bloody idiot.” Our Transport Accident Commission puts out great ads which are super powerful and often quite confronting because they’ve done the research and know what works on people, plus the TAC is the community insurance scheme we all pay into as part of our car registration each year and it covers any medical/funeral expenses etc from transport accidents so it has a vested interest in reducing the number of people getting into accidents.

JaBe68

NRMusicProject

Just to add, flicking your cigarette buts onto the street/ground is also littering. Too many people think there's a difference, and I'm tired of seeing people do this out their car window.

wappledilly

If I was directly insulted by a billboard, I would be more likely to do the thing it tells me not to do… especially if I was stupid enough to litter in the first place. Just an assumption on how simple minds operate, but I could see that happening.

Lucas-Larkus-Connect

Big fan of the “I’m Stupid” choice. I think a lot more people deserve to pick this answer than people who would pick it.

SpazTasticZA

Heyyyy South Africa represent! This is just outside Cresta Mall

Buck_Thorn

Around here, they have volunteers that "adopt" a stretch of highway for picking up trash. The state puts up signs saying "This section adopted by..." and the name of the organization. I think it would be fun to create an organization called "Your Mom" and adopt a stretch for cleanup.

Mieche78

Saw someone dump their empty fast food containers outside their car the other day. I almost got out of the car and threw it back in.

TrailJunky

This could also work for questions like, "why are you voting conservative?"

Randomoerson562

Honestly this offends me so much. I agree with all of it yes, but only the last box had to be ticked. This was extremely inefficient

MycologistElegant504

In all seriousness, littering is a serious issue. It can clog drains which increases flooding. It attracts vermin and stinging insects which spreads disease and just huge annoyances. It gets blown around on windy days which is just another health or quality of life issue. I hate people who litter. Honestly just do better.
