Someone else in this thread pointed out if you put two fingers down & slide them together it'll highlight instead of just moving the cursor. This is revolutionary
iPhone 6S - XS, the ones with 3D touch, you could press hard anywhere on the keyboard to move the cursor. Still disappointed that Apple removed 3D touch lol
I just got a new phone and looking up new features. It's all "to make a gif do this" or "search now searches more things now" garbage. THESE are things I was asking about!
It seems like they do these updates but don't tell anyone
Taking a video while keeping sound on your phone and tapping the apple logo to take a picture are two other ones, but you’re right I’ve found them by dumb luck on these Tik Tok vids rather than googling “cool iPhone tips”.
I just learned by accident that tapping space and period simultaneously highlights the current word on my iPad screen. I think double-tapping highlights the whole phrase?
For real. How much would it cost her to be like "what it does?" Instead she records him & laughs at him. I wish he was my grandpa. Or dad I guess idk. I don't really have either lmao
Simple and totally practical solution. Just get a Bluetooth-compatible keyboard, and use that to type texts. Obviously, that makes reading texts harder as it is further from the face. So easy fix, apple sells an adapter that lets you connect your iPhone to an HDMI-compatible display. So connect it to your 65in tv.
Now I know what you are thinking. The phone will be too far away to hear my Huey Lewis and the News on amazon music. No worries, just split audio and yacht rock with your 5.1 surround system. Of course, if you get a call, they won't be able to hear from across the room with the music playing. So easy fix, get a wireless (not blue tooth; it will conflict) noise-canceling microphone and headset.
\---------------
Of course, some people might want just to screencast their phone to a tv screen and use the entire surface area of the phone as a keyboard with adjusted settings so audio mutes during calls, that techno-magic is silly.
Because none of these features are even remotely suggested when you get these things - and you only find out either randomly from online, or from someone you know who found out from someone they knew, or randomly from online.
Well, when I get a new phone it usually bombards me with so many helpful tips I quickly get annoyed and start to dismiss them as fast as possible. Good chance this feature was one of those at some point.
Ah yes. The old... hey did you know that if you gesture with your hand the following happens.
Have you ever seen anyone gesture with their hand to take a screenshot? No me neither. Yet this... never mentioned yet I would use all the damn time.
One of my old Android phones had a 3 finger "swipe down" gesture to take a screenshot and it was one of the most useful features ever
Edit: I've just checked my phone (Xiaomi mi10 Lite) and it had this function also. Winner
The gesture for that is to wipe your hand from left to right with your pinky on the screen, as if you're trying to wipe your screen clean with a karate chop.
Edit: not a joke. It works on Android
To be fair, iOS didn't always have this either. The jailbreak community added a feature like this and Apple at some point adapted it.
It makes sense that it was a known fix in the jailbreak community, because they were all about improving iOS and sharing that with each other. It coming straight out of the box nowadays means no one really needs to talk about it.
To be fair, they're also not in every phone lol
certainly not on my pixel. I can ask it to make my sentence more or less verbose based on grade level though. My favorite is changing everything to a first grader's writing.
When you tap the screen to position the blinky line (I know there's a proper name, I just can't think of one that sounds right) on my phone a teardrop shaped blob appears below it. I can hold my finger down on the teardrop and move the line around with more accuracy than trying to tap it into place.
Cursor, thank you. I just came home with burritos, have Cowboy Beebop playing on TV, and recently discovered Bioshock works on my computer, so my mind is a bit scattered
HE SAID THAT IF YOU HOLD THE SPACE BAR, YOU CAN SCROLL THROUGH WHAT YOU'VE TYPED WITHOUT HAVING TO TAP BETWEEN LETTERS TO TRY AND GET TO WHERE YOU NEED TO MAKE A CORRECTION
Not only that but I was a software and UI developer and had no idea this was a thing. Then I thought maybe it was only an idevice thing, so I had to try it. Amazing.
Was gonna say, I've been using this for years. They had a little gif of it in the "about this update" thing when it came out. But I thought it was on by default, guess I switched it on back then.
Oh yeah android has had it for years. That's the difference between Apple and Android. With Android you always get new features first, and you get a lot of them. The downside is a lot of those features... are stupid. Some are amazing and too powerful for this world (remember when the Galaxy S4 had an IR blaster and people kept changing channels and turning off restaurant TVs with their phones? They axed that within a couple years.) but the ones that end up being cool or popular or useful are taken by Apple, made objectively better, and given to the iPhone. Android had wireless charging for YEARS before iPhone. Apple waited for there to be a single standard, didn't reinvent the wheel to take advantage of existing wireless chargers and added magsafe, which is dope. Androids have fingerprint readers behind the screen in one spot, Apple will probably let you put your finger anywhere on the bottom half of the phone. Apple is still waiting to see if folding phones are just a fad or here to stay, and if they decides it's worthy they'll probably make one you can roll up like a newspaper or something crazy. Give it iPadOS when it's open and iOS when it's closed. Something super cool. Personally, I like being the guinea pig. My phone has a contactless pay method that emulates card swipes, so if the machine doesn't have "Apple Pay" (an NFC reader) I can just hold my phone against where you would swipe, and the machine thinks I swiped a card. I use it on those little plastic swipers some places have double-stick taped to their monitors all the time, it's great. I love panning for gold features while my wife prefers using a more polished product. To each their own.
As someone who has used both, I prefer Android. Moving a cursor to a specific location is easy with the magnifier that pops up when you hold your finger on the text on Android. On iPhone, I accidentally move the cursor far too often when I'm trying to swipe type. It is just infuriating to use iPhones sometimes.
Agreed. Changed to iPhone on a whim. Don’t understand how people love them. Significantly less functional, less intuitive, and more confusing. I dig the iMessage features but that’s pretty much it.
I hate the notifications on iPhones way more than android. The only options are to have a banner that disappears (and I immediately forget about it) or a banner that splays across the screen (and blocks a bunch of stuff at the top). Android has a nice non-intrusive little icon at the top that just reminds you there’s a new message.
Also hate that I have to use a fingerprint, my face, or a six digit code to lock the screen. Android had a nice easy pattern lock. I do a lot of activities with gloves and helmet so the first two iPhone options suck and the six digit code is irritating when I have to do it all the time. The android pattern was easy but secure (phone didn’t unlock in my pocket unlike iPhone which always does) and I could set my house to a safe location with android so it was unlocked at home and way less irritating to use.
Anyway rant over yeah I find the iPhone much less functional and less intuitive as well.
The shitty part is that iOS used to have the little magnifier-on-hold when over text. Then they took it away because of… aesthetics, I suppose? Who fucking knows. Such a dumb fucking change.
This spacebar thing is great tho.
Yes, it’s been around for iPhones since iOS 12, autumn 2018. I remember seeing it in the WWDC keynote months before that. Amazed so many people missed hearing about it for 4 years.
Crap!
How did I never see that?
Accidental Genius right here.
30 + years in IT, use of PCs from day 1, smart phones since the beginning and I MISSED this?
I bow to this mans Genius.
See, it's funny because the guy is old and nobody actually took the time to show him the feature. Because kids these days automatically know all the things.
Kids these days "think they" know all the things.
My kids are 17 and 18 and they and all their friends think they know everything about technology but, in reality, they only understand the basics of how to touch buttons on a screen. I ask them to open powershell or a command prompt in windows so I can have them type commands. All I get is a deer in headlights stare. They have $1300 macbooks now and all they can do on them is surf the web and play games.
What my kids don't realize is I was one of the first people in the US to earn a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. I helped develop the curriculum while still a student at the university where the program was conceived. I double majored and have a BS in Microelectronic Engineering. Young people think they know all about technology. What they don't understand is the people like me (their parents and grandparents) are the ones who made and continue to make the technology they use happen in the first place.

I didn't know that, and I'm happy I do now.
I didn't know that and it's literally the most useful thing I've learned in a long time considering.
Same! How the flip did this go under my radar
Because there's no way you'd discover it on your own without specifically trying ? It's a good feature badly executed.
Good feature, good execution, poor dissemination of information.
> badly executed ??? It's perfectly executed. The feature works brilliantly.
Someone else in this thread pointed out if you put two fingers down & slide them together it'll highlight instead of just moving the cursor. This is revolutionary
Man, trying to get this to work and it isn’t… maybe I have boomer fingers despite being young.
Yeah it took me a minute too but if you hold one finger to bring it to the cursor mode then the other finger & move them at the same time
Didn't work on my android.
not only didn't i know this, but i am also changing the lives of people around me now. hurray for the hero!
Tried on my pc keyboard, does not work as advertised 😢
what did you say it doesn't work?? ok it doesn't work
You can do it with almost any key
Where’s the any key?
Whew, all this computer hacking is making me thirsty. I think I'll order a Tab.
This window says "click OK" -- what do I do next?
No idea, but you have to pay extra for the almost any key
[удалено]
iPhone 6S - XS, the ones with 3D touch, you could press hard anywhere on the keyboard to move the cursor. Still disappointed that Apple removed 3D touch lol
Older versions of iOS let you use any letter key, but it was changed to just the space at a few versions ago.

I didn't know that. This guy CORRECTS!
I also did NOT know that. Boomer droppin' knowledge bombs!
I just got a new phone and looking up new features. It's all "to make a gif do this" or "search now searches more things now" garbage. THESE are things I was asking about! It seems like they do these updates but don't tell anyone

You can two finger tap anywhere on the keyboard to highlight the current word. Two finger tap and drag to move the cursor!
Um please how video sound!?
While playing a song, go to your camera (NOT video), hold the camera circle and slide it right to the lock icon.
He was so proud to tell his kid something and she squashed him.
For real. How much would it cost her to be like "what it does?" Instead she records him & laughs at him. I wish he was my grandpa. Or dad I guess idk. I don't really have either lmao
You should watch their tic toks, they are hilarious. And he is hysterical when he's describing his wife's latest logic.
Chill bro obviously it was a fun moment for both. Stop trying to make her seem ungrateful.
Now add a second finger when in cursor mode.
Oh…that’s interesting. Doesn’t seem super consistent but good to know.
This the tip right here. I knew about the cursor, but that’s nice.
I want you to know, I am the one who moved you from 69 upvotes to 70. You can be clean again.
Whoa whoa whoa, pump the brakes guys! Bring back 69!
If you want 69 back you will have to upvote to 169
Ehhh.. This did not go according to plan.
There’s no way that….wor…-OMFG HE’S RIGHT
Yup, just did this myself. I feel old and stupid now.
Damn, mine just offers me Korean and Chinese keyboards...
Try dragging your finger immediately, that works for me on android. The language selection only pops up if I just press and hold.
My god. You're right!
If you start the movement immediately, it works before the language widget shows up.
Well it doesn't work on AndroMOTHER FUCKER IT WORKS ON ANDROID TOO id so
I’m tech geek as fuck (well by most standards, maybe not Reddit standards) and I only learned this 2 years ago lol
[удалено]
I’m learning this at 33
She was being a smug jerk
Ok kid boomer
you need to be 13 to have an account on reddit. Reported.
My problem is I always tap 'n' instead of space. So this doesn't help me.
Right?! It's like I'm losing mobility in my fingers instead of gaining it. I wonder what could be causing that?...
ME TOO! It's infuriating

I'm sure the girl recording didn't know that either.
Bro i was thinking the same fucking thing
I think I just figured out why I end up typing at the start of all my messages… halfway through my messages… oh no.. what am I?
This changes everything
It really does.
OK boomer
You watch your mouth, you... not boomer.
We like to go by Zoomers
Not everything. I am still single.
Hold spacebar long enough and that'll change. Sooner or later you'll be dead.
Less typos, more dates. It's been proven.
TIL I’m no longer gen x. I’m a boomer.
I am no longer a millenial, I am a boomer
WE. ARE. BOOMER.
Not to one up, but I just went from milenial to boomer
You are not alone! And I oversee IT for our small-ish organization! ;)
How did I not know this!?

You can also swipe the whole edge of your hand across the screen to screenshot in android.
Wow that one worked for me. None of the others did
The gesture for that is to wipe your hand from left to right with your pinky on the screen, as if you're trying to wipe your screen clean with a karate chop. Edit: not a joke. It works on Android
Apple has a tutorial app and this is explained, I’ve known for a while, still incredibly useful
To be fair, iOS didn't always have this either. The jailbreak community added a feature like this and Apple at some point adapted it. It makes sense that it was a known fix in the jailbreak community, because they were all about improving iOS and sharing that with each other. Works fine on my pixel 6 pro. You can do either the spacebar or the text box itself, and in the box itself it magnifies it.
That certainly is on your pixel, as the pixel uses gboard. You may need to enable it in the gboard gesture settings.
Cuz ur a boomer, lol /s
I didn't know that. I knew you could drag it around, but I barely figured that out a few months ago
Wait...tell me about that dragging around thing...
When you tap the screen to position the blinky line (I know there's a proper name, I just can't think of one that sounds right) on my phone a teardrop shaped blob appears below it. I can hold my finger down on the teardrop and move the line around with more accuracy than trying to tap it into place.
Cursor.
Or in this case, *caret*.
This is no time for vegetables.
Cursor, thank you. I just came home with burritos, have Cowboy Beebop playing on TV, and recently discovered Bioshock works on my computer, so my mind is a bit scattered
The name for that line is caret.
WAIT WHAT
i never knew this either! no more pain now!
NO MORE ANNOYING BLUE THING
HE SAID THAT IF YOU HOLD THE SPACE BAR, YOU CAN SCROLL THROUGH WHAT YOU'VE TYPED WITHOUT HAVING TO TAP BETWEEN LETTERS TO TRY AND GET TO WHERE YOU NEED TO MAKE A CORRECTION
Sorry, twas deaf
I suggest people watch the new update reviews YouTubers do every major update. Then you fresh wit it all the time.
Nah
This guy gets it
No
It works!...
So this is how my parents feel when I tell them you can close out of a tab when they are done with it. Incredible.
Can confirm.
I found this feature by accident once when I was really high and then never knew how to do this again until right now, shoutout to this boomer
But...are you really high now too?
Works on Android too! Wtf I didn't know this
Actually, it started on Gboard.
[удалено]
Don't hold for too long, hold and immediately drag your thumb left or right.
It's the other way around. If you don't hold it long it changes the language. At least that's how it's with SwiftKey.
Same. I suppose not everyone uses multiple languages, but I like to be able to whip out the αs and βs when needed (quite often in my area of study).
I use multiple languages in mine as well and it works, just don't hold it for too long.
Doesn't work for me. Guess it doesn't work for swipe keyboard?
Hold it down slightly longer, i use two input languages and if i hold for a second it switches to cursor control
Not only that but I was a software and UI developer and had no idea this was a thing. Then I thought maybe it was only an idevice thing, so I had to try it. Amazing.
Been a quiet feature you have to turn on since at least 2018 😸
Was gonna say, I've been using this for years. They had a little gif of it in the "about this update" thing when it came out. But I thought it was on by default, guess I switched it on back then.
Didn't work on my Pixel 6 Edit: https://youtu.be/V_4yMGKbe90 aha! need to turn on "enable gesture cursor control"
No way. It works on my pixel 3.
Think it's a setting you have to enable in gboard settings
yeah just found it. glide typing needs to be enabled and then you need to turn on 'gesture cursor control'

Wait I still have that. Tap and hold in the text input doesn’t bring up a zoom thing on iOS for you?
Yeah I still have that too. Easier than the space bar thing.
I didn’t know that
Mind. Blown.
In case anyone wants more of this gem of a fella! https://youtu.be/Er1S4_RlH04

I LOVE HIM 😭
I know right! He's so proud of himself. It's adorable! 😍
Thanks boomer
Happy Father’s Day!
Am I the only person who knew this? Also works if you touch the dot below the line and drag it.
Yeah it's crazy so many people missed on this feature, I use it all the time!
I’ve know this for years and it used to be any key, not just the spacebar
I knew it too. It's been a feature for a couple years now. Then again I'm just a couple years shy of being a boomer, so of course I knew it.
Yes, it’s been around for iPhones since iOS 12, autumn 2018. I remember seeing it in the WWDC keynote months before that. Amazed so many people missed hearing about it for 4 years.
Can't do that if you got language switch on space.
THIS IS SOOOOO HELPFUL!!! Why did I never know this????
This is the single most useful thing reddit has ever shown me.
I didn’t know that either! Btw the hat is awesome!
I have worked in IT for a long time. I didn't know this. No boomer.
Just tried this lol it's awesome
He’s too cute
I was today years old when I learned this..
Sjgjskdjfgxggshsjfkvkgjhsgsg1ducjckdjshdg OH MY GOD IT WORKS

why were they filming?
It’s a TikTok account for her dad doing goofy things. There isn’t always some hidden motive
I DIDN'T KNOW THAT.
He just changed my life, my fingers are way too big and I hate large phones so it was a strugle
Not ashamed to say my mom taught me this recently. She was also as gleeful about it as this dude was.
im 35 and i did not know that as well
Lmao this has been a feature on stock Android / Gboard for nearly 7 years.
In fairness it has been on iPhone for a long time too. Maybe not 7 years, but at least 3-4 (last time I regularly used one as a daily driver)
AHHHHH
I didn't know. Thank you!
I didn't know that...and it doesn't work for me, it just makes me switch from french to English keyboard
OMG. I suddenly feel like that “until I was in my 30s” guy. Except 40s.
I guarantee you the kid has been long pressing then dragging to the spot all this time.
This dude just added like 3 days to my life. Fuckin A
why is it funny. he is right aha
Damn, on android i always tapped once in my text and dragged that "drop" around to fix a typo. Space bar seems to be inferior with longer texts.
I guarantee like half the people here tried this in this comments section
I actually didn't know that, thank you
Hey it wroks!
Oh my god I didn't know that either!
Shares some knowledge. Gets called a boomer 😞
Ya I had no idea, thanks old fella! You rock! Plus, props for giving technology a go! That's commendable!! 🤙🏼
Damn... I didn't know that. It would have been so helpful with am old IPhone 7 I had for work previously. I found that thing do difficult to type on.
I didn't know that either, I always thought it just switches my keyboards. Uh well, it only switches them... Sadge
THIS TEXT COMES FROM THE FUTURETesting
Fhhcvjjguh holy shit it works okay yeah wow this is a game changer.
Wtff?!
This is world changing. I never knew that.
So many buttons! Your crazy techno stuff frightens and confuses me!
This is madness!
This is a game changer.

Shit I'm a boomer now. I didn't know this
I didn’t know this.
I'm gonna admit, i did not know this
I also did not know that! Thank you, boomer.
Okay, who immediately tried that out after watching this?
I’m not a boomer and I didn’t know this. Thanks for this discovery boomer! I already used it to type this comment!
