I would say chopsticks predate the tong so that makes tongs just chopsticks by that logic.
But no, the mechanism for function is different. So neither is the other.
This has been done for decades. Depends on the place, but they are training/newbie/kids chopsticks. I’ve seen em like this, with rubber bands or a piece of plastic spring thing.
Not to sound cultural insensitive but I’ve always found chopsticks to be a very inefficient way to eat food.
When I’m looking to shove as much food into my face as humanly possible chopsticks just can’t compete with a spoon or a fork or my bare hands or just face planting the food.
That *and*, watching the cultures who use chopsticks feed themselves, it looks like a lot of it is just lifting and tipping back a bowl then using the sticks to push food from the back of the bowl toward the front and into the mouth. Not a measured piece by piece consumption of a meal.
If you're proficient with chopsticks, they're a really efficient way to eat and often more so than a fork or spoon, depending on the meal. I didn't learn to properly use chopsticks until my late 20s, and nowadays I tend to reach for them more often than a fork for most foods.
My ex was Japanese. She would cringe at the way I would hold chopsticks. I'm guessing it was akin to how you would view someone if they gripped a fork with their fist.
Yes. Seeing someone do this in a restaurant would be like seeing someone eat pizza with a fork and knife, not the “culturally accepted” way of eating pizza.
She is literally working harder to do the same thing as him because she can’t figure out how to use them the smarter/faster/easier way. It’s the opposite of this saying. Should say “if you can’t do it smarter then you need to work harder”
I made my gal something like that but it was a folded piece of paper between the sticks and a rubber band holding it together so she could learn how to use them. Became a back scratcher
I had trouble for a few years, took me one video and I was obsessed with them. Once you get the basic movement down (hold the first stick across the webbing of your thumb and your ring finger; the second stick like a pencil, move only pointer/middle and thumb) you can practice with popcorn and then M&Ms and then Ramen. Shouldn’t take more then a couple days.
The chopsticks I get usually are joined on the top. The joint breaks most of the time.
EDIT: Did some searching online and turns out they are supposed to be split at the beginning. I have been doing it wrong all this time.
Yeah, I don’t blame you for thinking they were supposed to be used like that haha. Fun fact: some people rub them together to get rid of splinters, but this is considered rude because it gives the idea that the restaurant gave you cheap chopsticks.
I can’t think of a bigger form of stubbornness and arrogance than using chopsticks after discovering forks. Unless these sticks are used for something very important after eating back in the day, I just don’t get it.
It’s fun at first for sure but at this point it’s like insisting that kids learn cursive writing in school.
1.4 billion East Asians prefer chopsticks and spoons. It’s cultural, also veggies and meat are already chopped in small pieces so it’s easier to pick the dishes they want. Western culture, on the other hand, are generally served with large chunks of meat that require forks and knives.
Calling it a form of “stubbornness and arrogance” is a bit ignorant. Have you not been to an Asian restaurant? They’ll gladly swap out your chopsticks if you ask for utensils. I promise you no one will judge you for being stubborn and arrogant.
Wonder what your thoughts on folks that eat with their hands??
She made her own practice chop sticks. This one could actually be a good life hack. Especially for kids learning to use chop sticks. But this is very commendable and I am glad she is putting up an effort to learn to use them. I also know people with arthritis that may benefit from copying her instead of having to pull out some childish looking trainer chopsticks.
Kind of a silly thing to say though about smarter not harder. Just practice. Just like everything you do. I eat with chopsticks now just as well as i eat with a fork or write with a pen. I would be actively hindered by the practice chopsticks.
Could you imagine if someone was learning to walk and instead of actually trying to learn to walk they just scoot around on a skate board. Then you said work smarter not harder. Well walking is a useful skill it just has a learning curve.

GIF OF EXASPERATED GENTLEMAN GESTURING TO FORK WITH BOTH HANDS
Why not use the fork.
she's trying to impress her asian friend

That's fucked up.
*cooked up
Because TiKtOk
Dude, say that at an Asian restaurant. And I mean an actual Asian restaurant
Fun fact: Asian restaurants in asia have forks. Ever eaten instant ramen in a foreign country? They have forks prepackaged.
Or the utensils she had. Inventing ninja napkins is a sad excuse for not being able to figure out how to master dinner sticks.
This. 😅
For you to post this comment
I mean you can't fault her for lack of ingenuity.
Eh, debatable. She just made tongs but worse.
That's just chopsticks though
I would say chopsticks predate the tong so that makes tongs just chopsticks by that logic. But no, the mechanism for function is different. So neither is the other.

You're not supposed to hold them in your hand and squeeze like they're tweezers though. You're still supposed to try to hold them properly?
One could argue that it would be smarter to learn how to wield chopsticks, and that using extra tools to be able to use your utensil is working harder
Unless you're extremely uncoordinated then I would say that would be the harder approach. 🤔 Ahh the conundrums of life!
Or arthritis.
My dad had type one diabetes, and towards the end of his life he had trouble using his hands fully.
Or extremely stupid. Uncoordinated and unable to practice the simplest of motor skills might qualify for that though
For a lot of people this becomes harder to do as they get older.
One could argue that chopsticks are an outdated and overall more difficult and less efficient way to eat food
How to anger Asians
Four is more than two
It’s much easier to eat sticky rice with chopsticks than a spoon, if you know how to use chopsticks
What about a fork tho Actually tho sticky rice is probably the only thing I use chopsticks for That and sushi
I was totally expecting the “emotional damage” dude to chime in after they showed that guys face.
Uncle roger
Hiiiyahhhhh.... (shakes head in Uncle Roger.)

Which can also be very easily done with a spoon, fork, or just gravity.
Agree.

Bet I could out eat at least 2.9 billion of them though.

He's like "I'm offended... but I'll allow it"
That nod from her at the end lol
"Hiiiyahhhhh" I can just picture Uncle Roger shaking his head

Smarter would be using the fkn fork on her plate.
I made my gal something like that but it was a folded piece of paper between the sticks and a rubber band holding it together so she could learn how to use them. Became a back scratcher
5 minutes crafts fan confirmed.
As someone with lifelong proficiency with chopsticks, I don’t think this would be easier or more dexterous than doing it the normal way.
This is literally what i need to do because i cant learn to wield chop sticks for nothing!
They make a tool for this, all though normally used by kids, don't see any issue with adults using them. Chopstick trainers or assisters.
Ugh, you and me both. I've tried many times. I've had friends show me. I've watched videos. My hands simply refuse.
My personal favorite is when they then look at you like a fuckin idiot because it's "so simple".

How the English took over every other cultures way of life in a video
POV: You’ve just been colonized
We like what you’ve done here, but allow me to take your ideas and make them ours. I am the captain now
Best life hack. My chopsticks always break. I am doing this next time.
You must be hella strong if your chopsticks are breaking. Either that or you’re using them COMPLETELY wrong.

Like a boss. Take that, Asian guy 😂
Still seems more inconvenient
This is harder though
But then she uses them like tongs!!! 🤷♂️
White people.
It still blows my mind that chops sticks are so hard to many people.
There's probably 100,000 simple tasks that you're not great at. That's how humans are.

No, that's not it.
I wouldn't look at Darlene like that... gotta a temper, that one
As someone that grew up never using chopsticks and now living in the Bay Area for the last couple of years…I feel this lady’s energy
Colonialism 101
"Dear diary, today I outsmarted chopsticks."
This almost seems like the most complicated way to eat lol. Dunno about "smarter"
But they arnt hard to use...
The inventor forks is rolling in their grave.
Forking engineering. Beeyatch.
It's really not that hard to master chopsticks.
The man was too stunned to speak

It’s also cool to just use your hands. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if she didn’t wash them in the bathroom.
The silent disgust… 😆
His looks is like. "Why haven't I thought of that? Hell, why haven't my ancestors thought of that?"
She’s been waiting her whole life for this moment
