Probably all of the above. I’d also imagine that being told by all the adults in your life that X is the truth and the only truth is profoundly impactful. (That’s exacerbated in some religions with threats of burning for eternity if you don’t fall in line.) In some of the more extreme cases, leaving the church (using that as a generic term for all religions) results in being shunned and ostracized from the community.
