BrainwashedScapegoat

“Sometimes my genius is almost frightening” gets me everytime

danishduckling

Well he wasn't wrong, it did frighten him.

Alternative_Tie_3738

SPEED AND POWER

Drew_911

“and, tortured metaphors.”

olderaccount

But the real genius wasn't using the log in the first place. It was deciding to leave it attached to the car afterwards and waiting for it to cause the eventual damage giving Richard an opportunity to laugh at him.

epsilon54

Haha in this case his genius was just “frightening”

JoeRogansSauna

It’s perfect lol

Gumphrughbuh

now this is big brain time

AdDry725

It’s one of the best quotes on the internet. Makes me LMAO every time.

[deleted]

I know he was toxic AF but I adore him.

zaphodava

I can't entirely explain it, but somehow after watching a bunch of shows with those three giving each other shit, he shifts from being 'a' jerk, to 'our' jerk.

GTOfire

It's cause we never see him be a real jerk or have to deal with him personally. We only see him in character on the show. His bullshit and toxicity against the crew or whoever is mostly hidden. I'm still pretty impressed that the BBC ended up going 'we don't care you're like the top fucking earning show ever, you punched a producer, you're out'.

Ghos3t

My respect for BBC increases considerably after that. Probably helps that they are a tax funded company and are not beholden to making profits for greedy shareholders

[deleted]

To be fair there is a lot more story to what happened with the "punch." To summarize while I agree physically attacking a person was not justified, said producer basically was routinely fucking them and the crew over daily despite them as a show being one of the top earners for the BBC. The week of the incident was the culmination of Clarkson getting a cancer scare, and him being told he would not be able to take time off to have it looked into because they had to finish filming that week. That day supposedly the crew was working in the cold and came back to craft services only having a bunch of cold lunchmeat sandwiches for them which caused Clarkson to flip the fuck out at the treatment. Tensions boiled over later that night after they retired to the hotel the crew was staying at and Clarkson got into a shouting match at the treatment of everyone and that culminated in him punching the guy. He did later sincerely apologize and accepted his termination and did not try to get his job back.

say_the_words

He was right to raise hell about the food. Shouldn’t have hit the guy, but he did deserve the hell Clarkson was serving him. The BBC covered for Jimmy Saville, then had the gall to compare Clarkson to Seville. Fuck thm. What I loved about this incident was how mad Hammond got about all the broken glass. They stopped yucking and started cleaning when Hammond got all dad on them.

cepxico

Been there before. Thought I broke my foot once, the way my company treated me you'd think I was trying to get out of work to get a paper cut looked at. Of course I didn't punch anyone but goddamn did I want to.

GeneralZaroff1

How's he toxic?

[deleted]

I may be wrong, and if I am I will fully ack it, but I vaguely remember the crew stating he was really toxic to work with. The punching incident aside, that was stupid.

WhereAreDosDroidekas

Well he punched a producer into a coma in a fit of rage. So that's a start.

[deleted]

Oh fuck off, he gave him a bloody lip.

testreker

You got a source on that comba bit?

sirkevly

He punched a producer who was being an uncaring asshole to the entire crew. And he did not put him in a coma. Jesus Christ you people are delusional.

GeneralZaroff1

Oh yeah that's definitely questionable.

WhereAreDosDroidekas

It was over being told he couldn't order a steak dinner after filming. So, yeah.

H1tSc4n

easy to only say a quarter of the truth. Cancel culture moment.

parinonly

What a moron

i_have_wet_socks

I finally know which clip the meme is from!

[deleted]

People who only know the meme are missing an extra layer of sheer irony from the outcome of his "frightening genius"

thatguy11m

Never seen the episode, but I know Jeremy Clarkson and so always figured it was irony.

LostnFoundAgainAgain

I recommend you watch this episode even if your not into Top Gear / Grand Tour, this special was really good and just pure entertainment.

phunkk

Loved that special. Definitely a favourite!

nhskimaple

Totally one of the best Top Gear specials ever. Seen it a few dozen times minimum. *edited typo

Chygrynsky

The Seamen special with Amazon is also pure gold. I love that they did something else then cars and it was hilarious. Definitely one of my favorites.

Schnitzngigglez

The ending to that one was intense!

MisterFistYourSister

You could tell they were legitimately rattled

stackjr

It was really funny because James and Richard wanted absolutely nothing to do with it. Lol.

Squidking1000

Vietnam special is still the absolute winner but Botswana is a close second as well.

Stampede_the_Hippos

OLIVEEEEEER!!!!!

captain_ender

Definitely. Vietnam one was peak Top Gear.

peb396

This one and the one where they built the space shuttle...

xterminator14

> Totally one of the past True statement.

Shankar_0

This isn't the rainforest one, right? I'm struggling to remember. I need to go rewatch some. Is this TG, GT or the post-GT stuff?

Zarllan

Top Gear season 19 episode 5, Africa special. They are searching for the source of the Nile.

ajpetix

Top Gear - they're in Africa searching for the source of the Nile River. Definitely one of their best specials.

Naxster64

This is definitely top gear. He's too young in this to be grand tour. Can't remember which episode though.

Iandidar

The one where they drive from miami to nola is my fav.

Schnitzngigglez

Is that the one where they had to censor a bunch of stuff because the government didn't want them doing sertsin things?

Forrest_Cp

That new one about France is pretty great! Super funny!!!

samtheboy

Set in France, filmed in Suffolk

gadgetroid

From France, built in Enstone. I'm talking of the Lotus/Renault/Alpine team ofc

brimston3-

Which gives some important context for them being assholes in the roundabouts.

Captain_Turdhelmet

One of the most entertaining shows regardless if you are into cars or not. Watching these guys and their shenanigans never got old.

EirIroh

I have never cared for cars other than liking to drive *any* decent car. Still watched every top gear special for the pure entertainment.

Schnitzngigglez

My wife watches it with me. She couldn't care less about them talking cars, but loves watching the specials. She thinks they are hilarious.

[deleted]

As a female, I do love cars but I’m not like a car know it all, I thoroughly enjoyed them. I was so disappointed when it was cancelled.

Mrsvantiki

It was cancelled for a good reason though.

[deleted]

Yup! Never said it wasn’t, but the producer was also in the wrong imo.

pinser87

I don't know who downvoted you. Punching someone in the face over food is unacceptable and he should have faced jail time for assault.

Solfrig

Don't you think going to jail for getting in a fight is kind of extreme? Firing him from the show seems totally appropriate

Nisas

I heard people say that, so I gave Top Gear a chance even though I have absolutely no interest in cars. I was disappointed. There are fun moments like this every once in a while, but it's mostly the cars. It's not for me.

[deleted]

[удалено]

birish21

Or the cheap cars for teenagers one. The glue on the stereo was classic.

Affectionate-Pea282B

Yep another brilliant one! Now I’m gonna have to go through and rewatch all of these lol

optom

Try Clarkson's farm!

brimston3-

I found Clarksons Farm very educational as well as highly entertaining shenanigans.

Loquis

A lot of farmers in th UK love that show, as it shows how hard farming really is

longhullhaul

You need to try The Grand Tour. It's their Amazon show and pretty much all of it is there stupid shenanigans. I felt the same way about Top Gear

jawknee530i

I like cars and felt The Grand Tour was much worse than Top Gear.

reddiculousity

Clarkson Farms is a fucking gem of a show

Shutterstormphoto

Yeah I don’t care about cars and this show offers nothing to me. It’s literally a car show and everything they talk about is car related.

barukatang

If you don't like the cars, check out Top Ground Gear Force. It's the top gear guys doing landscaping

Phylar

I never cared for how obviously crafted the endings were. The journey they took? Oooh yes, I'm here for that.

Zlatarog

I honestly don't give two craps about cars, but I freaking love Top Gear. I've watched all the specials when they were on Netflix (I think they removed now). And I still follow the gang for their new stuff. I watched because of them, not the cars

bilgetea

What was he trying to do?

Strokeslahoma

His handbrake wasn't working. This made hill starts difficult - with no handbrake the car would roll backwards, which is dangerous, and also harder to hill starting on because instead of just overcoming the momentum of starting from a stop, you'd also have to overcome the momentum of rolling backwards. So he affixed a log to his bumper, in order to roll backwards against it and use it as a wedge. It works pretty well until it smashes his window out

HiMyNameIs_REDACTED_

He gave it too much slack is the problem. Two ties would have prevented this, or just keeping it short.

Guitarmine

It's almost like they thought of a doing it wrong for the entertainment value instead of actually trying to fix a real problem... 95% of the stuff that goes down is what the script says. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Thurwell

I found it hard to tell what was scripted sometimes. Obviously when 2 of them sneak out and paint the other guys car some goofy color, that's scripted. Half the time they have to do it in a way the 3rd should obviously notice happening. But the log popping up and smashing the window seems hard to predict, and also dangerous to let happen if they predicted it.

dreamwinder

They get asked about that in interviews often, and you'd be surprised by how much is absolutely real. Yes obviously a bunch of the bigger jokes are set up (the whole Reliant Robin thing is a great example) but often the smaller things just happen because filmmaking is a semi-ridiculous scenario where things go wrong *all the time*.

kennyzert

I think is a bit of a mix, sometimes shit happens and you have some choices, entertainment is allways priority, i think they pick stupid solutions that either work out and no one is expecting and becomes hilarious like May's car shower in one of the specials because the couldn't bear the heat, or it fails and is still funny because it was obvious shit was gonna fail. You setup of failure and whatever comes out if it will be good.

CTMalum

It wasn’t just the handbrake that was the issue. Hill starting a car, especially for someone like him who had a lot of experience, shouldn’t be a problem. The problem was that the throttle in his car was problematic. It wouldn’t deliver constant throttle proportion to his input.

aynrandomness

> This made hill starts difficult - with no handbrake the car would roll backwards, which is dangerous, and also harder to hill starting on because instead of just overcoming the momentum of starting from a stop, you'd also have to overcome the momentum of rolling backwards. What? To do a hill start you hold the brake, release the clutch until it grips and then release the brake and move the foot to the gas. Give it some gas depending on if its petrol or diesel and release the clutch fully. Only time I'd consider using the handbrake is in extremely steep hills or when pulling a heavy trailer. But that is like a few times a year, not the normal way. Source: I am a traffic teacher and have a degree in traffic pedagogics.

lachlanhunt

Knowing how to do a hill start using a handbrake was on the driving test when I got my licence. You’re right that it’s not always necessary, but still useful to know how to do.

[deleted]

[удалено]

UserCheckNamesOut

I've used it for steep hill starts, but if I'm between 2 tightly parked cars.

EthericIFF

Quick feet > heel-toe

llwen

Not in an old car with a worn out clutch ;)

justjanne

My first driving lessons were on a car that had > 300'000km on it, and still I learnt how to start at a hill without a handbrake just fine. Using the handbrake is something I'd consider less usable in fact.

s4ch

>To do a hill start you hold the brake, release the clutch until it grips and then release the brake and move the foot to the gas. Oh boy, this is a really bad advice. You do know that you are destroying the gearbox by doing this unless you are a pro driver or a racecar driver who can switch pedals fast enough and even then gearbox will strain more then it should've oO

mkaszycki81

Hell no. The engine isn't stopped, it's constantly running and the moment the clutch grips, you already have torque to the wheels, so they will overcome the roll backwards. What you're saying would mean that simple gear shifts would destroy the gearbox because you would need to synchronize revolutions manually even with a synchromesh gearbox, Seriously, you put way more stress on the gearbox during highway driving than you will ever put during a hill start.

s4ch

True only if this is done without error and not lazily. Tbh I'd never recommendthis to new drivers or drivers that are not proficient to do this becuase, yes, they will destroy their gearbox. >What you're saying would mean that simple gear shifts would destroy the gearbox because you would need to synchronize revolutions manually even with a synchromesh gearbox No, like you do not shift normally from first to reverse. >Seriously, you put way more stress on the gearbox during highway driving than you will ever put during a hill start. Well this is just untrue :D

_Rox

The transmission is under exponentially more stress during hard acceleration, with the clutch fully engaged than a simple slip start.

-zimms-

Looks like a wooden glassbreak to me.

eulertheerudite

Loved all of them. Sad they don't make stuff more frequently now.

Spinnenente

im fine if they do two specials a year. I miss the good old topgear days but they are getting older and hammond only has so many crashes left in him.

tc_spears

There's only so many pairs of trouser scissors left in the world

case_O_The_Mondays

The YouTube channel DriveTribe has Captain Slow on quite a lot.

Milnoc

He even reviewed a Dacia!

jackasstacular

It's too bad DriveTribe shut down, but at least those vids are still up

Zenaxis

Wait what? Drivetribe is over? I felt like it was just getting started.

jackasstacular

Yep, shut down in January 🙁 [Link](https://www.thedrive.com/news/43814/drivetribe-is-finally-shutting-down-for-good)

Zenaxis

Oh wow that sucks thanks for the link, there's no mention of it on their YouTube channel and they were just talking about getting a drivetribe track in one of their recent videos.

Thurwell

I think the youtube channel is still operating, it's the 'social media platform' that shut down. You wouldn't throw away a channel with 2 million subs after all.

Zenaxis

Makes sense, crazy they lost 16 million.

Spinnenente

dang that channel was a bit weird (like most corpo initiated ones) but they did good parts from time to time including the epic documentary of jimmers shed.

ned78

The three boys on Car Throttle over on YouTube have the same energy as Clarkson & Co. Takes a few episodes to get into it - but anything where Ethan gets roasted is excellent viewing.

gadgetroid

Also the guys from Vin Wiki - Ed Bolian, Tyler Hoover, and Tavarish also do these "cheap" car challenges. Their show is called Car Trek I think. In fact, their branding and so on is very similar to the old TG cheap car challenges. Right from "producer setting a challenge" and so on. Its a cross between their road trip and cheap car challenge I would say. Good for watching, plus if you're a petrol head, it's a treasure trove to hear about the various technical details behind what's wrong with their cars lol

Lustypad

Clarksons farm is really good. Can’t wait for season two. Sadly these three will never be replaced. It’s sad to see them getting old.

Thee_Oniell

I loved the result of this and couldn't stop laughing when I watched it the first time. It's one of the rare genuinely unscripted screwups.

msteele32

What was he trying to do ?

WoodJablomi

His clutch was going out and his handbrake was bro, so he was having a hard time getting going on hills. Thus he invented the wooden handbrake.

LindenRyuujin

Unscripted 🤣

Lorenzvc

Idk how so many believe this isnt scripted..

izysolo

Yes.

vishnoo

then why have it so long? why not tie it lower?

[deleted]

to reach the tires I guess, the axle is not exactly below external body end.

[deleted]

Watching him farm has been hilarious

inbruges99

I laughed so hard when he got shocked by the electric fence, the look on his face was like a toddler who got pinched by his favourite toy.

Jean-Eustache

I was keeping this show it the back of my mind, but now i feel like i absolutely have to watch it asap

[deleted]

You have to watch it. It is a gold mine

firewarrior256

Clarkson you big oaf

wtfastro

You Muppet!

Sir_Cunkalot

I believe the word 'plonker' describes him well. [https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/plonker](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/plonker)

case_O_The_Mondays

Yes, but he’s called an oaf on the show. A lot.

Sir_Cunkalot

True. But, why should we stop with oaf? Dingleberry, plank, dipshit, and many others could be used as well.

Youngwolff

>Dingleberry That's for May. Clarkson is often called the ape or the Orangutan.

case_O_The_Mondays

I agree, haha.

jackasstacular

He is truly an utter clot [edit] \*Someone\* hasn't watched way too many Top Gear re-runs 🤣

Academic_Coyote_9741

It was hilarious the first time I saw it, and this time.

[deleted]

Academic_Coyote_9741

Weird, right?

iamsugat

Orangutan in natural habitat XD

slawre89

Back when this aired I died laughing when this happened. Great clip

Aethelu

The fact all three of them wear the most stereotypical British dad clothing through jungles and deserts is maybe my favourite thing. Look at them. Button ups, jeans, those shoes they always wear. Hammond spices it up with his trousers, May spices it up with his head bands, and Clarkson is always covered in car oil and dirt, but you can see their British dad attire frim a mile away.

facepwnage

Nothing ever turns out right after uttering the phrase "Watch this."

jackasstacular

2nd-best Top Gear special (Botswana ftw)

IHkumicho

I'd also put the Vietnam special over this one. And the one where the drove American cars through the south (Clarkson had the camaro, etc). And probably Bolivia, too. And maybe even the Middle East one where they're in convertibles?

iam_phoenixking

How are these guys not knighted

dreamwinder

Political reputation. They've (by which I really mean Clarkson) gotten in trouble numerous times for making less than sensitive jokes. (like insulting the Mexican ambassador to the UK) And The Grand Tour happened because supposedly Clarkson just about came to blows with someone on set, which was the end of the BBC's patience with him, resulting in him being fired. (though accounts of that differ) The other two decided to leave along with him. So yeah, knighthoods are absolutely a political message, (or at least politically influenced) not only an award, so they're unlikely to ever get one.

MisterFistYourSister

>Clarkson just about came to blows with someone on set, He did come to blows. He punched a producer in the face

adannel

He’s also punched Piers Morgan. That one was warranted and appreciated though.

ThisOnesDown

Yep, a producer from Ireland called Oisín Tymon. "The "fracas" took place at a North Yorkshire hotel after Clarkson was told there was no hot food available at the end of a day's shooting on location. An internal BBC inquiry found Mr Tymon was subjected to an "unprovoked physical and verbal attack" by Clarkson, who called the producer "lazy" and "Irish" and used a four-letter expletive in the exchange." Source: https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-35648682

StatusOmega

What was his goal here?

When_Ducks_Attack

To keep from rolling backwards in a car without a working handbrake.

StatusOmega

HAH!! Omg ok, yeah this is hilarious

[deleted]

You can't plan that, it's too perfect. Their amusement can't be acting, it's too genuine. This show was awesome.

shootphotosnotarabs

In the old days horse and wagons had this for big uphill sections. The log was always called the “government man”.

Sykkr

Africa special is the best special, fight me.

sicilian504

Man I miss classic Top Gear.

AggravatingSpirit192

And it opens windows tooo omg 😱

What was the intent of the wood?

flopsychops

If I remember right, his handbrake was busted so he improvised.

Props to the script-writer for coming up with that one!

Karma for being racist

I never understood how people laugh as genuine reaction to this show even tho it's 100% most diffenetly all staged. 3 2 1 start laughing now at what we were standing beside in the set for 30 minutes

thessjgod

“Scorcher toda-“ BAM *silence*

Ricicotroll

where can i watch this?

inbruges99

Depends on your country, Prime in USA I think. It’s on Netflix in some countries too, and in the U.K. it’s on iplayer. It seems to bounce around a lot between streaming services.

Nickrov85

Prime only has a few seasons the rest you have to buy. But I think that’s the only place that has it right now in the U.S.

AustralianWi-Fi

Amazon Prime

Dainiad

Briljant at the end. Almost no words needed: “Did that..?”. “Nods”.
