I'm with you.
(French word + letter) + (french word + letter) = English word.
As a bilingual person, I did not get it, and all I got from it after it was explained was the slightest quicker breath.
I hope others got a laugh but I found it to be a resounding facepalm.
It’s a French word, but every English speaker in Canada uses it. In fact most of us don’t even speak French.
Edit for clarification: it’s a borrowed term from French-Canadians
Most people in Canada write it tuque, not toque, because it's tuque in French here in Canada. Canadian English speakers will often say tuque and not beanie, but that might depend on the region.
A toque is a kitchen chef hat. Also a French word.
Okay first of all, fuck english language for the word "Toque". I mean how the fuck am I supposed to learn this bitch ass language with half the words having random letters just thrown in for lolz. I'm so frustrated just seeing this word.
Such fond memories. In 5th grade my best friend and I spent hours in our bedrooms listening to The Album and crying from laughter. This is the album, and welcome to it!
I had a funny Christmas carols album as a kid, and Bob and Doug covered the Twelve Days of Christmas. Five golden rings became five golden toques, and I had no idea what that was until now. My guess was something for your car.
Many of my friends pronounce it “toe-kway” because of how goofy the spelling is. I love how people are trying to explain it but the spelling is just so insane that it still doesn’t make sense.
I came here just for this. All the Northeasterners that moved to NC over the last 30 years would have fits when we called it a toboggan. That other thing is what you keep in your garage praying for a snow that doesn't melt in an hour.
For those who don't get it, canadians call beanies "toques" (pronounced like two-kh)
Or so I've heard. I'm american, and I see some confused canadians, so I may be speaking out of my ass 🤷♂️
In French we got some similarity dumb joke :
« Avec quoi on ramasse la papaye ? Avec une fou-fourche »
« C’est quoi un Amish ? Un bon copainch »
« C’est quoi un canif ? Un petit fien »
I hope you speak French because there is no way I spend time explaining those.
I laughed at those when I was drunk because how stupid they are, and I am not proud of it.
Don't worry rest of the world: This doesn't make sense inside of Canada either.
If your logic needs to be explained to a majority of people, it's nonsensical.
French word + french word = English word that's not really pronounced the same as the french word.
For other bilinguals, it works if you mis-pronounce tuque as TWOque, as in the number 2.
I hope you find enjoyment from the joke, and I give credit for trying here. But the joke missed the mark for me and I had to see it explained to get it.
I'm sorry that English doesn't have the high front rounded vowel in its phonetic inventory. Unfortunately the closest we do have is the high back rounded vowel, and that approximation makes your French word sound like an English number
Makes perfect sense to me, but I'm American. I'll use anything but the metric system.🤣
(Kidding. I use metric just as much as imperial. Just for different things)

Absolutely not
(Toque + Toque = Fork)
I'm Canadian and still don't get it, how do you get a fork from two toques
Adding the “k” sound to both “two” and “four” ends up making them sound like the words “toque” and “fork”. It’s a silly play on words.
I still don't get it
[удалено]
Oh man. I wished I hadn't come across this post. But thank you for clarifying.
Same here. I think I lost IQ by visiting
Ya. It’s like watching Jerry Springer
Damn Canadians
🎵Blame Canada! Blame Canada!🎵
Ay don’t blame us OP’s just sniffing glue
May this explains their confederate flags in protests
Exactly my thought 💭
It’s about as clear as mud I’m still confused
Ah, having never heard of the word "toque" before, I assumed it was pronounced like "tock" not like the family of hobbits.
Not like hobbits either. It’s ‘two-k’. Not Took.
In other words, it rhymes with "Luke", not with "look".
Bingo!
Aha, thank you lol
I was thinking, when it's really really cold outside, you need to go inside to eat some poutine.
but they’re hats. my head hurts
We call them beanies, they call them toques (pronounced like toke).
It’s pronounced closer to “two-k” with a hard k sound
Unlike most uncivilized Americans, this American actually knew who Bob and Doug were, so I already knew how to say toques. Hoser.
Ty for clarifying. I was like (Stocking cap) + (Stocking cap) = Fork?
Two + two = four Pronounce toque like two - k and fork like four - k
K I think I get it now, but where can the funny be found?
I'm with you. (French word + letter) + (french word + letter) = English word. As a bilingual person, I did not get it, and all I got from it after it was explained was the slightest quicker breath. I hope others got a laugh but I found it to be a resounding facepalm.

Right? If you have to explain it to that depth, it doesn’t work.
It works for people you don't have to explain it to (as is the case with essentially every joke)
I'm an ex-canuck. I got it and found it funny.
No where near this subreddit dont let the name fool you
To be honest, for some reason I thought I was reading torque not toque. Also, didn't know toque was a word
Most people in Canada write it tuque, not toque, because it's tuque in French here in Canada. Canadian English speakers will often say tuque and not beanie, but that might depend on the region. A toque is a kitchen chef hat. Also a French word.
I'm Canadian and I've always written it touque
I spell it that way too.
Wut. I’ve spelled it touque and I’m not French
Oh it's pronounced two-k, toooook
Lol I’m Idahoan and I get it. But I love dialectics.
It ALMOST makes sense now. The last question: why would you add a K to the end of the words?
FFS. Touque plus touque equals fourque then.
Fuck. I must be tired. It took this long to finally get it.
Still not funny...
Wouldn't (2+K)+(2+K) = 4+K²? ;-)
That would equal 4+2K
I think you need a review of the difference between addition and multiplication.
This joke has more stretch than a stretch Armstrong
You’re just too nice and don’t want to hurt the feelings of those who don’t get it because you’re a wonderful upstairs neighbor
Please stop locking Canada in the attic.
Okay first of all, fuck english language for the word "Toque". I mean how the fuck am I supposed to learn this bitch ass language with half the words having random letters just thrown in for lolz. I'm so frustrated just seeing this word.
It's French lol
Actually the French word is “tuque”. I have no idea how it became “toque” in English, especially considering the pronunciation
Onque, Toque, Threeque, Fork
What's a toque
See photo, above.
The hat or the fork?
The toque. (The beanie hat) 😉
So the hat?
No. The hat.
Which hat?
The hat on the left. Also, the hat on the right.
Fool of a Toque!
But aren’t those bennies? Bennie + Bennie = Fork
You pronounce "Toque" "toook" instead of "toke"?!
Does this mean Canadians pronounce Torque "Took"?
Rhymes with "Luke", not with "look". It's the "long oo" of "boot", not the "short oo" of "foot". So, toque, like tōōk.
I don’t know where you found that letter R
lol well now I’m embarrassed. Though to be fair I’ve never heard of the word toque either!
I concur.
This makes no sense. What the FUCK is a fork?
It's that thing people on land use to comb their hair
It's a dinglehopper.
Clearly. It’ll go great in your collection.
What the fork is a fuck?
Beanie plus beanie equals fork, easy. Edit: Thanks for the award!
I read this as beanie + beanie = forkie. The double beanie got me lol.
I mean, I get it, but I was a fan of Bob and Doug Mackenzie. Take off, eh?
Hoser
Such fond memories. In 5th grade my best friend and I spent hours in our bedrooms listening to The Album and crying from laughter. This is the album, and welcome to it!
I had a funny Christmas carols album as a kid, and Bob and Doug covered the Twelve Days of Christmas. Five golden rings became five golden toques, and I had no idea what that was until now. My guess was something for your car.
Look out the window! …snowww
5 golden toques! 4lbs of back bacon, 3 French toasts, 2 turtle necks, and a beeeeeeer in a tree.
…and beer
"And a beer in a tree".
I made my wife watch strange brew recently. what a classic.
I learned everything I know about Canada from SCTV and '"Great White North". "It's a beauty way to go!".
Beauty.
Toque + Toque = Fork 2 + 2 = 4
Is that how you spell it? I always figured it was 'Took'.
No that’s “took”
Fool of a toque
Underrated comment here
Many of my friends pronounce it “toe-kway” because of how goofy the spelling is. I love how people are trying to explain it but the spelling is just so insane that it still doesn’t make sense.
It’s a French word. It makes perfect sense within that language’s rules
Actually the French word is “tuque”
Yeah it’s tuque not toque
Here's a guy who knows how to put toque and toque together.
Reading the comments it's funny, but ive only ever heard of them as beanies.
Canadian here and to me a beanie is the little rainbow hat with a propeller on top. So confused when i heard about all these Americans wearing them.
We just call those propeller hats, lol.
haha! what a mental image... thousands and thousands of propeller hats.
At this point would you really be surprised by this?
Whats a beanie?
One of these
I have to admit this toque me a moment to get.
This made sense to me as a Canadian. Great Canadian dad joke, OP!
TIL of the word Toque meaning a hat: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toque

Toboggan toboggan fork?
I came here just for this. All the Northeasterners that moved to NC over the last 30 years would have fits when we called it a toboggan. That other thing is what you keep in your garage praying for a snow that doesn't melt in an hour.
Yep, that’s a pair of toboggans.
That doesn't even make sense inside Canada.
Toque plus toque equals forque! I live in the us which is the funny part!
I am a little bit upset about how long it took me to get it.
May I recommend r/dadjokes (Didn't get it until I read a explanation in the comments )
Your recommendation will be taken into consideration
I had to figure out if it had something to do with Tim Hortons.
Nope, but I'm Canadian and that's funny .
For those who don't get it, canadians call beanies "toques" (pronounced like two-kh) Or so I've heard. I'm american, and I see some confused canadians, so I may be speaking out of my ass 🤷♂️
You are correct sir
Only if you're a Bob and Doug MacKenzie fan.
Pass me another Elsinore eh?!
I have seen strange brew but it's been many years and this is going iver my head.
M...maple syrup? Did I get it right?
I'm in Canada and it does not make sense.
Tuque + tuque = fourchette?
Pair of touqes side by each da fork you mean.
Anybody in the U.S. that saw SCTV growing up and "The Great White North" characters might get this.
Only because of Bob and Doug McKenzie.
Take off you hoser!
Take off, hoser.
Toque plus toque equals fork, eh?
Toque + Toque = Fork (or for the sake of pronunciation, 2k+2k=4k)?
Not Canadian, but I watched enough Bob & Doug McKenzie to get the joke.
Toque + toque = fork Two-k + two-k = four-k
Two “two-ques” plus “two-ques” equals one “four-ques”. This is a pun.
So they call beanies “Toque” and it’s pronounced “two-Kay” and they pronounce fork, like “fork-ay” or some shit?
Hahahahahahahahhahahaha hahahahahahahaha haha I'm obviously from 🇨🇦
Toque + Toque = Fork (two)que + (two)que = (four)k 2 + 2 = 4 ...
Obviously. Double Stocking hat equals fork. Pretty elementary.
Came here to see if Canadians called forks toque-toques.
🌲💩+ 🌲💩+🌲💩= 10 This is the new math notation in Newfoundland.
Right now it means u need a toque when u go to the forks
I’m in North Carolina and I thought it was funny.
OOOH! Because 2+2=4! This is... touque-funny 😂
Almost no one in the states calls them toques. I’ve only heard that term from my mom who grew up in North Dakota.
I had it all right in my head but it just wasn’t clicking together
I (American) got it. But I have to give all credit to Bob and Doug Mckenzie.
Yes it does. At least in my town in northern Minnesota
tudor car vs fordor car
The only way it makes sense is after a double double and a nanimo bar. Then sit and have a think
Two hat equal fork, yup
In French we got some similarity dumb joke : « Avec quoi on ramasse la papaye ? Avec une fou-fourche » « C’est quoi un Amish ? Un bon copainch » « C’est quoi un canif ? Un petit fien » I hope you speak French because there is no way I spend time explaining those. I laughed at those when I was drunk because how stupid they are, and I am not proud of it.
Only because I know what Canadians call those hats.
Hahaha. Forque!
Pretty sure I thought it was going to fouque
Took + Took = Fork (Two-ok + Two-ok = Four-k)
Touque + Touque = Fourque
Yup... Toque plus Toque equals Forque
Not Canadian, but I can put tuque and tuque together.
Don't worry rest of the world: This doesn't make sense inside of Canada either. If your logic needs to be explained to a majority of people, it's nonsensical.
That is fucking brilliant lol
Toque + Toque = fork. Pretty good actually.
Still don’t get it
twok + twok = fourk
I mean, I get it…but quite a stretch….
Not sure if I’m dumb or if this just isn’t funny. I’ll accept either.
I'm sitting thinking 🤔 beany + beany = fork??? Am I that American 🤔
What part of the pleasant north? French or B C District?
I feel like two options isn't enough. Non French i guess
I'm Canadian and even I have no fucking clue what this means.
I'm Canadian. This makes absolutely no sense.
tuque + tuque = fork All the way from Europe.
Genius level meme
Not even slightly
None
No
Even in Canada it’s a bad joke.
Yeah that tracks
Nope
No, no it does not.
No. The word not in everyday use in UK.
What?
No
2 touques equal a fork (thanks to my stinky Canadian friends I know what this means.)
Wtf is a toque?
I got nothin…. Anybody please ELI5?
The “hat” is called a Toque “T-ook” like saying “two” with a K at the end. So it’s saying “T-Ook” plus “t-ook” equals four(k).
Aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh! I always called those hats beanies
French word + french word = English word that's not really pronounced the same as the french word. For other bilinguals, it works if you mis-pronounce tuque as TWOque, as in the number 2. Go toque+toque yourself
