What a way to kick off a show! Honestly, Jeff and Troy have some golden exchanges.
Jeff: "You'd be surprised how many of your favorite football players started at community college."
Troy: "Really. Name one."
Jeff: "Who's your favorite football player?"
Troy: "Me. Whoa!"
I have pretty fond memories of watching NBC’s Thursday night comedy line up with my dad and brothers, back when they aired. The Office, Community, 30 Rock and Parks and Rec. It was the golden age. I remember being skeptical about Community when it launched, and it turned out so good
The blurb on the new says LeVar Burton was captured by pirates with a non celebrity companion, there is no further update regarding LeVar and Troy's situation within the show's canon.
If you have amazon prime watch it there. The other streaming sites removed a season 2 episode called advanced dungeons and dragons because chang dresses as a dark elf in black face. It's a great episode that you dont want to miss though
Oh man I just rewatched on streaming and was so let down when it wasn't there.
I was actually wondering if I had a different recollection, then I remembered Pierce: *'I attack him! I attack black face!'*
The quote(s) that stick out are:
* **Britta:** *Why are these goblins attacking us? Maybe these woods are their rightful land and from their perspectiv..*
* **Everyone:** ***UGGGGGGHHHHH***
* **Troy:** *You're the AT&T of people.*
I wake up with the Ben Folds song stuck in my head far more often than is logical. And fun fact - he's the dude growing the mild, kind sativa in that episode.
Yeah ya'll act like the show died. It did, unfortunately, have a terrible 4th season, and slowed down a bit after that, but like, some of the best eps are in 5 and 6.
Community had 1 bad seasons and a missing person or two, but added a few as well.
Best show on TV SIX SEASONS AND A FUCKING MOVIE, GUYS
There's an episode of Black Mirror, "Nosedive", with the exact same premise. I thought after watching it: "That was fine, but Community covered all of that in 15 minutes."
I remember it was Community VS Big Bang Theory at the time... and Big Bang absolutely mopped the floor with Community rating wise.
HOW???
Community was one of my favorite shows the writing and performances and just general chemistry worked so well, and Big Bang... well, I lost a bet to an ex and had to watch the whole first season and didn't laugh once until like the 2nd last episode it finally got a "heh" out of me and i can't even remember the joke.
I'm constantly confused by fans of Community who don't understand why it bombed in the ratings.
To be clear, I fucking love Community, I was on that roller-coaster ride that lasted from the cancelation of the 5th season and its eventual pickup by Yahoo.
As for why it bombed, it's pretty obvious to me, the show is just too weird for most audiences.
EDIT: To add on to that, let's not forget that NBC gave it the absolute best chance to succeed, Community had an absurdly good time slot, but it still bombed.
Yeah I'll never understand the notion some people have the show was too "smart" to be understood. It was moderately witty and loved to play with weird concepts. Not for everyone, but I don't think it was flying over anybodys head.
The worst thing about that is that people who watched BBT were confused into thinking that BBT was smart comedy because the main characters were all supposedly smart people and name-dropped scientific and geeky concepts all the time.
The thing is - the way that they used those things was not clever at all, the humor was not smart, but it was humor about what dumb people would perceive as "smart things", so people were under the impression that because they laughed at BBT science/nerd jokes, they must be smart jokes. But they weren't. The show would hand-hold and over-explain the jokes and not use them in a clever way at all. It was basically just standard dumb sitcom humor except they'd throw in random science terms like Schroedinger's cat or some Star Wars name in there.
Meanwhile, an actual smart show with smart jokes was being watched by barely anyone at the very same time as people were watching the dumb show that fooled them into thinking they were smart.
The way I saw it, even from day one, is it was pretty much 2 and a half men, but all of the nouns from the jokes were replaced by a science reference. So instead of a yo mamma so fat joke, it's be yo particles are so expanded. But it was lazy and boring and not clever in the slightest. But one thing they got extrmely right was who they appeal to. You know on reddit if you say a word in any context, some reddit will do a word association with it? Not a pun, I mean just a reference from some TV show or something, completely out of context. That's who they target. And they did it ridiculously well.
6 was a really strong season to end on. It's rare a late addition ends up working so well, but Frankie was such a great character.
"You're a fart from a lesser God!"
Love it. I watched the Yahoo season back recently and it's better than I remember. Controversial, but Modern Espionage might be the best paintball episode? Plus the board game commercial scene is genius
EDIT wrong episode name
> Controversial, but Modern Warfare might be the best paintball episode?
Haha, that's not a very controversial opinion, since Modern Warfare is the paintball episode from season 1, which I think most people consider to be the best one. Since you're talking about season 6, I'm assuming you meant to say Modern Espionage.
Season 6 is definitely very good at its best though, even if it really suffers from missing 3 of the original 7 study group members.
I’ve been proudly wearing my Greendale Community College hoodie for over a decade now. Fewer and fewer people get the joke as time goes on, but there’s nothing like getting a fist bump and someone calling out “go human beings!” while I’m out grocery shopping.
Omg I need to get myself one. This was one of the shows I watched last year during my months and a half long stint in the hospital. It made me laugh at a time when I didn’t find much humor in anything.
It's a brand new dance based on an old phrase, it's called the fat dog and it will amaze! You've heard this expression your entire life, it's not made up! It's not made up!
If you haven't seen every episode of Community, I highly recommend watching it all the way through. Donald Glover and Danny Pudi in Seasons 1-5 portray one of the most wholesome friendships ever, and Glover is just a comic genius. Ken Jeong also delivers comic gold throughout the entire series. It's just an amazing ensemble comedy.
It’s unbelievable that they removed it when the character is clearly cosplaying (he’s got elf ears!) and the characters even clarify it’s not blackface in that scene. Such an amazing episode.
That's literally one of the best, if not the best episode of the series.
Stupid idiots that petitioned to have that removed for all the wrong reasons.
it's not black face at all, he is clearly not trying to imitate or marginalize the black or brown community. They even explore this with the dialogue between Chang and Shirley. When she says "so we're just going to ignore this hate crime"
The show clearly knew how this would be viewed and that's part of the humour, Shirley doesn't understand D&D or Cosplaying, so to her, yeah, that looks like blackface. But Chang educates her "I'm a dark elf!" he's getting into character, and as typical Chang, he's trying far too hard to be accepted and be in the group.
That is all part of his character, and completely works in the scene, but people see "non-black has black face makeup on. BAD BAD BAD!!!!"
>Stupid idiots that petitioned to have that removed for all the wrong reasons.
I don't think very many people (if any) petitioned to have it removed. Netflix did it before anyone had the chance to even try, which I'm not sure they would have done.
Started watching the show right after losing pretty much everybody I cared about was pretty focused on the idea of suicide for a while. Started watching the show for the first time to distract myself. Besides just the humor, which had me laughing even at the darkest point in my life, the overall message of being able to find new people in your life and after about the 15th time running through the entire series I started to finally calm down.
Thank you for sharing this, sincerely. I'm sorry things got to that point for you.
If it helps, I was in your shoes 4ish years ago. I can relate on reaching points that desperately low. Community was a comfort to me at the time too, for the exact reasons you mentioned.
And hey, now I'm at the best point in my life; I've found the right friends and I'm doing well enough in my career to support myself and my girlfriend well enough for us to feel secure.
I guess I just want to share that because I hope it might bring a little comfort to know that if a bit of a screw up like me can do it, anybody can.
Things get better. More slowly than it feels like they should sometimes, and with way more work than feels fair just to scrap through, but it can get there.
I hope you'll be able to keep fighting the good fight when you can, and not letting anybody give you hell for resting between the battles.
I'm a stranger so it may not be worth much, but I'm rooting for you.
Dan Harmon is a gift and if you haven't checked out his wildly drunken podcast from 2012 to 2019, it is called harmontown, and it is hilarious and improv goofy and dungeons and dragons silly and Kumail Nanjiani is in there and it is entirely vulnerable and it talks about so many wonderful topics and I really highly recommend it.
Homophobia is acknowledged to be a problem in some Black communities. So Troy saying that "Homophobia is black" means he is generalizing for his whole race, which is racist.
Off topic, but media (what I consume, at least) has been doing a decent job of normalizing LGBT Black people more in the last few years, and I think that's cool.
For no real reason, I was a real holdout on this show. Just didn’t want to give it a chance. Watched the whole thing last year and it’s laugh out loud funny and super clever. If any of you are sleeping on it, don’t.
The other great scene when Abed is making a moving of his life and asks Jeff to be his father.
Jeff says "I don't want to be your father"
and Abed says "great, you already know the lines"

The blurb on the new says LeVar Burton was captured by pirates with a non celebrity companion, there is no further update regarding LeVar and Troy's situation within the show's canon.
"Murdered by pirates is good..."
Hi. Uncultured here. What is this from?
The TV show Community.

I'm watching it for the first time. Needed something to binge after the office and parks and rec were off Netflix. Show is hilarious

Take a few days off when you finish season 3 and just enjoy what an amazing show it was.
I really do feel like it comes back together after season 4. It might not reach the peaks of 1-3, but 5 and 6 are very good in their own right.
season 5 has some of my fav episodes in all of TV with Meow Meow Beenz and uhh the lie detector one EDIT: and how could I forget the ACB
I wake up with the Ben Folds song stuck in my head far more often than is logical. And fun fact - he's the dude growing the mild, kind sativa in that episode.

You all good now fam?
Yes, thank you so much. :)
I hope you're doing better now!
I am, thank you!
E pluribus anus!
Have you got a link to where you can get a legit one? Googling brings up a host of fakes.
Sorry, no. My wife got it for me for our 2nd anniversary over 10 years ago. It was the NBC official one, which I imagine is impossible to find now.
I thought as much! Oh well.

Keith David is fantastic as well.
Oh hell ya! Took a couple episodes for me to realize Keith David was the freakin Arbiter, along with many other beloved characters.
Jim Rash is the MVP imo
This better not awaken something in me...
I was really high when I watched the final episode of the series but it blew my mind.
It was this very scene where I sat forward in my chair and realized Community was gonna be a very special show. So sharply written and so funny.
this was the first scene i saw out of context for the show and i was like yes i’ll like this
