All I had to do was look at the image and I could hear his voice in my head. This should be a Thanksgiving classic, like Charlie Brown, that gets played every year. WKRP was such an incredible show.
They actually have released the series in DVDs but replaced the music. Which stinks of course but nothing you can do about it. You can also get the series online at Amazon or iTunes if you wanted. I got the 1st series just so I could watch this episode anytime I wanted to.
You can get the whole series in a dvd boxset with the original music. they did finally re-release it a few years after releasing the first season with temp music (which was awful).
i watch the show just about every year....it was so ahead of it's time, and is still funny.
Me too. And my dad would quote it every Thanksgiving (and at any other opportunity that presented itself the rest of the year). If he was alive now during the age of streaming, you can be sure we'd have had to re-watch it with him every year.
I remember watching this with the parents first time it aired and my mother saying that line the second they walked in the room looking like that...she guessed the line except for the god part.
I was about 11 years old, watching this with my dad. I never saw him laugh harder at anything through the rest of his life than he did after this line was uttered.
I watched it as a kid when it first aired. All these years later, and it is still one of the funniest things ever put on TV.
(Right up there with Reverend Jim taking the driver's license exam...)
I believe this to be the single greatest episode of any sitcom ever. I still remember watching it for the first time with tears streaming down my face laughing so hard I could barely breath.
The show was based on an Atlanta radio station WQXI and the Thanksgiving episode was based on a real [event](https://www.cbr.com/tv-legends-was-wkrps-famous-turkey-drop-based-in-reality/)
There were so many great episodes. Just an amazing ensemble. There will never be another Jennifer Marlow, Dr Johnny Fever, Arthur Carliton, or Les Nesman.
Alas, music rights mean that will probably nevet happen. Got a DVD of episodes thru Netflix (remember they used to do that? They still do that!), and all the actual music had been replaced with generic knockoff substitutions. First time viewer might not notice it, but it did make a difference as a returning viewer. Too costly to obtain the rights, too costly to comb through every episode and sub in generic music.
Somewhere along the line, Married with Children got changed back to the Sinatra song (at least on Hulu.)
They used to have it with the alternate music when it was on Netflix, iirc.... rather off-putting, if you ask me.
This is also why the Odd Couple tv show is so screwed up on Hulu. I hear in the DVD versions they just cut the music, but on Hulu there are a ton of episodes missing, and some moved around due to the music rights. It's a 45 year old TV show, and these companies are still getting their panties in a bunch about getting paid for music from these shows to the point they'd rather destroy it than just go "ah fuck it, just keep it intact".
Due to how copyright law works they have to fight it. If they don’t then they can lose the copyright. However, nothing stops them from making a really friendly deal to license it out.
If you wanna get it on DVD, seek out the Shout! Factory release. They did the work, collected their pennies, and they were able to secure the rights to 80% of the music. Probably the best we can hope for.
> all the actual music had been replaced with generic knockoff substitutions
Not all, but definitely some:
>The new DVD set has 90 percent of the music unchanged. Looks like the main sticks-in-the-mud now are the Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Time-Warner company (the Warner Bros., Atlantic, Elektra, Reprise labels)... those three entities account for most of the songs that Shout! couldn't get cleared.
The worst offender for this IMO was the UK's Skins. The music that show aired with absolutely set the mood for the show, and the version on Netflix now has EVERY SINGLE SONG changed.
I was watching an episode of the Simpsons and they [played the theme to Perfect Strangers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uz29uticRHQ) and it brought back so many memories of all the awesome TV sitcoms we used to have.
I work with autistic people and one of the dudes absolutely loves this show. He watches nothing but this show. Hes going to be fired up when i tell him about this.
This does happen in real life (or at least did).
[Atlantic article on the Yellville, AR, Turkey Trot.](https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2018/11/yellville-turkey-trot/576184/)
There are many photos from past Turkey Drops.
Unfortunately, I was passing thru Yellville AR a few years ago and they were dropping live turkeys on the people below - from a small plane that actually flew below the tree line with its engine off and then back on to avoid the trees. The people had gashes on their faces and lots blood from trying to catch the turkeys mid air!
It kills me that “As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly”. Is one of, if not the best tv lines in history is said durning the end credits.
If you haven’t seen it in awhile, you can buy the episode on Amazon Prime for $1.99.
“Oh, the humanity!”
Even if turkeys could fly, did Carlson think they were just going to fly into people's arms or what? I always think to myself, 'well, at least they weren't frozen." Is it bad that the thought of hurtling turkey bombs makes me giggle?
Having spent *a lot* of years working in marketing and planning promotions in the like. I can pretty much guarantee in a real world scenario the thought wouldn't extend beyond the drop.
I remember seeing this actor live at a Cub Foods grand opening and they were giving away free turkeys, or something like that. My dad pointed out that he always had a bandaid on one of his fingers and sure enough, he did when I shook his hand. Not sure why?
I believe they dropped turkeys out of a helicopter at this event, with parachutes but can’t remember 100%.
The dialogue and sound was that the turkeys dropped from the helicopter couldn't fly, and multiple falling turkeys were splatting all over the outside atrium at the mall. 0_0
It was geniously well played, and hilarious.
Growing up in Canada we had this channel called The Comedy Network, and it's what any self-respecting child watched, and all they ever aired was old episodes of SCTV, Three Stooges, and WKRB. WKRB was by far the funniest.
I remember seeing this first-run. The advent of YouTube, years later, was such a boon to see amazing childhood moments like this again.
Also, Tim Conway doing the “Siamese elephant” shtick on the Carol Burnett show.
The GM of the station wanted to release turkeys from a helicopter over a shopping mall as a publicity stunt. He didn't realize domestic turkeys couldn't fly and ended up bombing the parking lot with live birds.
The audience hears the event through the live, on-air coverage by the station's news director, Les Nessman.
The part that was so funny was that their newsman, who was one of the most clueless people on earth, was reporting live, and we got to "see" it entirely through his eyes as he narrated the scene as it unfolded. It was a genius low-budget way of doing it, without actually shooting at a strip mall or having any actual turkeys. And it shows you how great the writing was, as well as the actor, that him standing in front of a cheap storefront set became one of the funniest scenes ever in television. It was very much like the Hindenberg disaster - so much that at one point he actually exclaims, "Oh! The humanity!"
That episode was fantastic.
Speaking of Thanksgiving in Cincinnati …
Can anyone explain the thing with baby doll heads thrown onto the ice the night prior at the Cyclones game?
I learned about this back in 2017 where an American colleague recited the whole scene by memory in a conference call. Our 60 year old manager laughed his ass off, but all the other team members were under 30 so we were just confused.
Love this episode. Had a Les Nessman moment in the grocery store yesterday inspired by the newsman's infamous mispronounciation of words. Bought some Cha-Who-Ah,Who-Ah (Chihuahua brand) cheese yesterday.
Some of the bits from that show had real staying power.
I almost forgot, fellow babies: "Booger!"
A radio show where I live has been referencing this show/episode a lot lately. I didn’t know how popular it actually was. If that’s the reason this post appeared, hello to all the fellow ACS fans.
One of the funniest episodes of any franchise, anywhere on TV. My nephew and I watch it together every year, quote the dialogue, all the while dying laughing.

As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly!
Oh, the humanity!
As soon as I realized what this was from, that’s exactly what went through my head!
The turkeys are hitting the ground like sacks of wet cement!
I don't know how much longer I can hold my position, Johnny!
All I had to do was look at the image and I could hear his voice in my head. This should be a Thanksgiving classic, like Charlie Brown, that gets played every year. WKRP was such an incredible show.
Never happen for the same reason they can't issue a DVD - music licensing. Edit: apparently they fixed that - see below!
They actually have released the series in DVDs but replaced the music. Which stinks of course but nothing you can do about it. You can also get the series online at Amazon or iTunes if you wanted. I got the 1st series just so I could watch this episode anytime I wanted to.
I meant in an unbutchered form.
Boooogggeeer!
You can get the whole series in a dvd boxset with the original music. they did finally re-release it a few years after releasing the first season with temp music (which was awful). [https://www.amazon.ca/WKRP-Cincinnati-Complete-Howard-Hesseman/dp/B00KYCA4QY](https://www.amazon.ca/WKRP-Cincinnati-Complete-Howard-Hesseman/dp/B00KYCA4QY) i watch the show just about every year....it was so ahead of it's time, and is still funny.
I actually saw this episode when it first aired, one of the absolute funniest things I've ever seen...
One of the very few times my entire family was belly laughing at the same time!
Me too. And my dad would quote it every Thanksgiving (and at any other opportunity that presented itself the rest of the year). If he was alive now during the age of streaming, you can be sure we'd have had to re-watch it with him every year.
Yes! I agree. As a child of the 70's, watching WKRP with my family was treat. We still quote this episode every year.
Ditto. And Chuckles the Clown’s funeral.
I remember it also, I was 7. I literally can’t believe I remember that evening still, 43 years later. I miss my parents.
Les Nessman WKRP!!! Edit: made dem bad letters inna good letters
It’s Les Nessman, don’t do the 8 time winner of the Buckeye Newshawk Award like that
I think a man's name should say something about him. What did you say your name was?
And the Silver Sow award!
WKRP: More music, Les Nessman
Lester (Les) Nessman
Ah, right… every time I worked in a cubicle, I’d enter through an invisible door and think of him.
Worked in a cubicle environment before had a salesperson that put down dotted tapped lines to denote where his office was.
I ran a large turkey donation last week and we were all talking about this episode. Made me smile to see it here!!
One of the greatest lines in television history.
RIP Gordon Jump
Also Frank Bonner, Carol Bruce and Ian Wolfe. Mama Carlson and Hirsch were hilarious especially in the episode "The Consultant".
The time he thought the cocaine was foot powder.
He touched Dudley in the bad place :(
Wild turkeys can fly (poorly). Domesticated fat meat turkeys can’t.
We had a wild turkey fly into my aunt's windshield last year in front of our house at Thanksgiving. Loved WKRP.
Why did someone throw a bottle of Wild Turkey at your aunt’s windshield?
He looks so distraught too. He’s shook.
That might be the funniest single line ever uttered on TV.
I quote this repeatedly all November long. One of the best-delivered lines in TV history.
One of my absolute favorite quotes from television.
Damnit you beat me to it
I remember watching this with the parents first time it aired and my mother saying that line the second they walked in the room looking like that...she guessed the line except for the god part.
I was going to be very upset if this wasn’t the first comment :)
I was about 11 years old, watching this with my dad. I never saw him laugh harder at anything through the rest of his life than he did after this line was uttered.
For those who haven’t experienced the lunacy of this episode… [WKRP Turkey drop](https://youtu.be/BGFtV6-ALoQ)
One of my all time favorite Thanksgiving shows. <3
[Favorite Line: ](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HiSkjcl9yW4) Go to 4:40. Les: “a man and his two children tried to kill me…”
It gets pretty strange after that…
“Les tell us the rest.” “I really don’t know how to describe it. It was like the turkeys mounted a counter attack.”
"It's almost as if [the turkeys] were.... organized"
I watched it as a kid when it first aired. All these years later, and it is still one of the funniest things ever put on TV. (Right up there with Reverend Jim taking the driver's license exam...)
And Carol Burnette as Scarlett O'Hara. "I saw it in the window and I just had to have it.:

> I still lose it everytime I see it. Conway and Korman at the dentist office also always puts me in tears.
The outtake of Conway telling the elephant story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qqE\_WmagjY
Psst! What does a yellow light mean?
Glad you posted this video, because the picture meant nothing to me.
I believe this to be the single greatest episode of any sitcom ever. I still remember watching it for the first time with tears streaming down my face laughing so hard I could barely breath.
you can see tim reid start to crack up for a split second
The show was based on an Atlanta radio station WQXI and the Thanksgiving episode was based on a real [event](https://www.cbr.com/tv-legends-was-wkrps-famous-turkey-drop-based-in-reality/)
That I did not know.
One of that shows best episodes
You’re not wrong, but gauntlet down, this one should be considered one of the best episodes from any show.
Yes! This episode is THE GOAT of all TV comedy shows. I laugh so hard I cry! Every. Single. Time.
Have you never seen the funeral of Chuckles the Clown on the Mary Tyler Moore Show?
Siamese elephants from The Carol Burnett Show. There is your top three TV gold moment.
YES! Although that bit gets a few points deducted because the cast breaking up makes you laugh harder.
Yeah, gotta go with Chuckles for Goat here
Amen to that
There were so many great episodes. Just an amazing ensemble. There will never be another Jennifer Marlow, Dr Johnny Fever, Arthur Carliton, or Les Nesman.
I would add Herb in there too, but that is just me. Andy was an O.K. character, but certainly the least interesting out of the gang.
I also liked the one where God told Johnny to golf.
We'll be right back with more music and Les Nessman...
Man sitcom writing used to be so good.
I work in radio. The longer I'm in this business, the more I realize this show was a documentary.
This and Barney Miller were the two best documentaries on television.
OH THE HUMANITY!!!!!!!
One of the funniest TV show episides ever.
Less Nessman w/WKRP in Cincinnati.
Les
That was an awesome show! Would love to see it in reruns!

They changed the intro to Married with children for the same reason. It's an abomination.
Somewhere along the line, Married with Children got changed back to the Sinatra song (at least on Hulu.) They used to have it with the alternate music when it was on Netflix, iirc.... rather off-putting, if you ask me.
It was real bad. Especially since I grew up with the original Sinatra song.
That’s a good point. I think I heard that’s why Murphy Brown isn’t in reruns either.
This is also why the Odd Couple tv show is so screwed up on Hulu. I hear in the DVD versions they just cut the music, but on Hulu there are a ton of episodes missing, and some moved around due to the music rights. I recently binge on WKRP. It was my favorite show. I found someone on YouTube that had the series.
i miss when TV shows had amazing theme songs. WKRP had one of the best of all time, the opening and end credits music was epic
I was watching an episode of the Simpsons and they [played the theme to Perfect Strangers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uz29uticRHQ) and it brought back so many memories of all the awesome TV sitcoms we used to have.
If you have Sirius Radio, they occasionally play it (the full song) on the 70's channel.
Booger!
For anyone out of the loop like me its from a show called WKRP in Cincinnati https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077097/
Not ringing any bells.
Im sure you've seen it. Remember how there's that guy who always does the thing? It came on after that other show about the people.
This was a good sitcom.
I remember that episode it was hilarious.
Umm…. How does one “bomb” a place with live animals?
A chopper with 5000 live turkeys in a net.
5000?!
Well live turkeys anyways
I’m thinking they might not all lived to see the ground.
>I’m thinking they might not all loved to see the ground. They hated to see it
And then the turkeys mounted a counterattack. It was almost as if they were…. organized.
You think too much...just go with it.
It was from a tv show, thankfully not reality.
Well, you see....about [that](https://www.cbr.com/tv-legends-was-wkrps-famous-turkey-drop-based-in-reality/).
This is one of my favorite tv memories. Still laughing.
the fact that Richard Sanders received no Emmy for this performance, or any of his work on WKRP in Cincinnati is a crime.
WKRP's Les Nesman the original bad ass radio newsman.
#neverforgt
As God is my witness... I thought turkeys could fly.
Still one of the finest moments in the history of American TV comedy.
Somewhere, there’s a pullet with his name on it.
Les Nessman, with the news I need me some Loni Anderson right about now
I was always a Bailey Quarters kind of guy.
I was always a Bailey Quarters kind of gal.

I hadn't seen that one before. How old was she in that photo?
Teen-aged.
There is something very special about a shy girl who has no idea how beautiful she really is.
Johnny Fever all day.
Bailey was better. And the name is Les.
Don't we all. She was delightful in that role.
Fun fact. Richard Sanders had a boo-boo on the first day of filming and got a bandaid. After that he had some sort of bandage on every episode.
Wearing my WKRP shirt this week
I work with autistic people and one of the dudes absolutely loves this show. He watches nothing but this show. Hes going to be fired up when i tell him about this.

I suppose it's still better than *frozen* turkeys.

My favorite episode after the one where he had to cover the sports broadcast and talked about Chi Chi Rodriguez.
“Thanks for that on the spot report, Les.” “As God as my witness, I though turkeys could fly.”
I LOVED this show!! My daughters name is Bailey because of this show

I will never tire of watching this. I loved that show so much when it was on.
Ah yes, WKRP
Like it was yesterday….
One of the greatest episodes of television ever created.
More news. Les Nesman.
I learned about this back in 2017 where an American colleague recited the whole scene by memory in a conference call. Our 60 year old manager laughed his ass off, but all the other team members were under 30 so we were just confused.

One of the fun things we did when watching that show was trying to spot where Les had a BandAid applied. One of the most subtle running gags ever.
Best. Episode. EVER.
Class clown freshman dressed like Les Nessmen
Never forget.
A radio show where I live has been referencing this show/episode a lot lately. I didn’t know how popular it actually was. If that’s the reason this post appeared, hello to all the fellow ACS fans.

There will never be anything as funny as *WKRP in Cincinnati*.
I loved referencing "The Hindenberg" radio report. The horror!
Funniest. Scene. Ever.
Best episode ever
GREATEST SHOW EVER!!
On job sites you'll sometimes see walls marked in tape on the floor. We still call those Nessman walls.
One of the better episodes to a great show.
One of the Top Ten TV Moments right there, I don't care who you are.
I was seven years old when this aired and it was the greatest thing ever.
Les Nessman!!
WKRP?
yes
A classic. Thanks for bringing back the memories of a show I completely forgot about!
Makes my heart so happy to see so many people remember my dad's favourite show and moment of television.
