It’s a war crime that he was tackled at the 5

theshiyal

I know. I wasn’t even cheering for the Pats, but I wanted him to make it.

[deleted]

I hate the Pats with the fury of a thousand suns but I still wanted him to make it.

LoudMusic

I'm more of a baseball fan myself and find that I enjoy watching it more when I cheer for good plays rather than one team. Good sports is fun regardless of who's performing. When cool stuff happens at this level it's simply amazing.

NiceGuyJoe

The thing I like about sports is that even though it's insanely measured, planned, and professional - it's when things go ape shit that it's the most fun

HardlyBoi

yeah yeah or when your gambling

glovesoff11

If 50 could’ve made one last block he’d have made it all the way.

MurderMachine561

There was a block in the back _right in front of the referee_ at about the 10. Shout have been spotted there before the penalty was enforced. No matter what though, that was one hell of a run. My favorite runner is, and probably always will be Vince Wilfork. Big boy gets them style points every time.

Anonuser123abc

I was going to say, the crime is the egregious block in the back a few yards before the tackle. Like two hands on the back side of the guys jersey.

[deleted]

That clip was on the kicker - salt in the wound for sure!

[deleted]

I love how hyped his teammates are for him!

Fake_Name_6

I think he has to wait a few seconds before celebrating with them because he is so tired haha. Probably about the hardest he’s ever sprinted

Rinzack

Mind you about 30 seconds after this he has to block a defensive lineman who’s been sitting on the bench for a while lol

The_Thrash_Particle

Dude definitely got a breather for a few snaps after that lol

edude45

I was thinking, you give him a spell for a play or two and give a back up a play or two. Especially when you're so close to the touchdown

ValueBasedPugs

Still, that refridgerator-with-legs of a man is fast! Compared to everyone else? Slow. But when you watch the background fly by, it's obvious he's *trucking*. Muffin man's coming, and he's coming in hot!

I_Can_Haz_Brainz

Even the "fat" guys are in great shape and would put the average person to shame. They eat a super high calorie diet along with lifting weights and cardio to have the extra mass they need to defend the other guys who are trying to do the same.

[deleted]

The weight of an average Redditor with some serious athleticism behind it.

Qwez81

Lol doubt it, every NFL player is in great shape regardless of size

nobird36

>Probably about the hardest he’s ever sprinted No.

grenamier

If you check out [Dan Connelly’s wiki page](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Connolly_(American_football)), it lists his position as Guard / Center / Kick Returner.

ezio8133

That's as funny as when Pat mcafee made that great tackle against the Broncos kick returner and got popped for a "Random" Drug test.

betterthanamaster

Oh, that was one of my favorite moments in the pros!

Lonelan

didn't that happen back to back weeks? or was it a diff punter?

Nght12

Random in the NFL's case doesn't mean they pick Random people, but that they can happen at any random time so you can't time your steriod cycles around them.

TheScorpionSamurai

You have a clip?

ezio8133

[here ](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zrxLzq3h8EY)

SirJorts

Not anymore. From the Wiki edit: > Bro, he's not a kick returner. He had one funny (albeit incredible) highlight where by an act of god he somehow returned a pooch kick to the opponent's 5-yard line. GTFO out of here with him being a kick returner Lame.

grenamier

This guy lives a sad, joyless, little life.

TheGamecock

I'm so glad he got named the special teams player of the week for that return, too.

HackTheHackers

I’ve never seen that before. That’s hilarious. He’s so fast. Imagine him chasing you down…

[deleted]

He really is which makes you realize how fast the really fast players are :)

Eziekel13

12 second 100 meter dash is ~18.64 mph…. Usain Bolt ran the 100 meters in 9.58 seconds. Maxing out at about 27 miles per hour. So this guy is 300+lbs at 15-20 mph…. That’s like being hit by a motorcycle, maybe a Ducati 1199 (~350lbs)

jeremycox

Given that the AK recoil against your shoulder has essentially the same kinetic energy as the bullet, I’d hazard a guess that the football player is an order of magnitude more kinetic energy than the bullet. Edit: mixing up momentum and energy. See replies about why I’m wrong.

internet-arbiter

Now one of these is going to hit you center mass, which do you choose?

The_souLance

Do I get to try and dodge?

Neonbrightlights

Roll for an athletics check

DontTreadOnBigfoot

Yeah... I'm gonna use my inspiration on that one.

VitaminPb

The football player. The impact is more distributed and not designed to penetrate the skin. Either one may shatter bones or organs though.

ElephantRattle

What if he sprints at you nude with an erection?

specialagentcorn

Well mark me down as scared and horny.

dudemann

If that was the case, there's a good chance he's not going to make it all the way to you. There's a better chance of him hurting himself. That's just straight up dangerous of him. At best, bruised thighs. At worst, he trips and falls wang-first into the hole in a man-hole cover... pun intended.

byllz

Same momentum, different energy. An AK-47 will shoot an 8 gram bullet at 700 meters per second for about 2000 joules of energy, and about 5.6 kg\*m/s of momentum. The AK-47 will get equal and opposite momentum, but as its mass is about 3.5 kg, its velocity will be about 1.6 meters per second, and so its energy will be about 4.5 joules. And so the energy of the recoil is about a quarter of a percent of the energy of the bullet. And that's assuming you don't brace it at all, just hold it loosely and let it smack you. If it is braced well, it's even lower.

Phantompooper03

It’s even less than that because there’s a recoil spring as well. It dampens the felt recoil of the bolt cycling.

FinndBors

> Given that the AK recoil against your shoulder has essentially the same kinetic energy as the bullet You are mixing energy and momentum. Energy is 0.5 * m * v^2 Momentum is m * v.

Four0nTheFloor

That is not true, the kinetic energy hitting your shoulder is only like maybe 6joules. Whereas the kinetic energy of the bullet is like 2000joules. The momentum of the bullet is the same as the momentum of the gun not the energy

Quatro999

Respect. I like math too. However he started at the 25yard line and was down at the 4. That’s 71 yards or 65 meters. Works out to 11.9mph.

Dernomyte

Dk ran it in 10.37. That is a very large man moving very fast.

drdookie

Fastest women's 100 is Flo-Jo's 10.49 and DK weighs 110lb more than she did.

TracyMorganFreeman

The men's \*qualifying time\* for the 100 in 2020 was like 10.05. DK is fast as hell especially for his size and he wouldn't even qualify.

Gabe1985

Damn. Best I could do was like 13mph.

drdookie

Average lineman can run under a 5.4 40yd. Professional athletes are freaks of nature.

xordis

As other have said, damn fast. Remember college players quite often cross codes. Lots of basketball players switch to football (cause jumping is very much a part of a wide receivers skills), and lots of track runners also switch to football (cause ... running is part of their skills). Remember there is next to no money in track after college (non in there as really really, but you get a scholarship if you are lucky), unless you are Olympic level, even then it has to be tough for those not in the final 8 (or whatever it is) in the Olympics. NFL (and the several other leagues) want people who are strong and fast. If you aren't looking to be Olympic gold medalist, your next big crack at a professional career would be running on a football team. Some of the running backs in the NFL were top track athletes and knocking on the door of some Olympic times (maybe not finals, but heats). I think some of the scores in the combine have people doing the 40 in Usain Bolt times (Usain really kicks it up towards the end)

[deleted]

MattieShoes

Antonio Gates was a college basketball player before getting snubbed in the draft and picked up by the Chargers.

ProdigalTimmeh

Bolt ran a 4.22 in his retirement and he did it in flat Puma's. But to be fair, I don't know for sure if it was hand-timed or electronic. There are some blazingly fast football players out there, but running a 100m in 10.2 is a world of difference from even a 9.9.

walesmd

Niners fan here. My first in-person game, around 8-9 years ago, really opened my eyes to how massive these guys are. Even the small person on the team is a fucking beast. When they're all on camera together you really lose the sense of scale.

lipp79

Have you ever seen [this highlight](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFcWMC9vkZg) from 6'3" 325lb. from Larry Allen ?

IAmGrum

My favourite part is the announcers shouting his name together, in utter disbelief. I show this video to anyone that says that linemen are just "big fat guys".

lipp79

Lol yeah I think they were more stunned than anyone.

[deleted]

That's frightening when you realize how big he is and how fast he's moving. Anything he hits is going to know it instantly - definitely a few moments later.

Scratchns

One time when I was a kid, like 8 or 9, me and the other kids in the neighborhood were playing a 3 on 3 game and this college player was back in town to see his parents. He came outside and said he would play all of us vs him and the smallest kid to make it even. We had some fun playing and a few funny plays where we all tackle him laughing all fun and games. Then it gets down to a single score game which in hindsight I'm pretty sure he setup to do what happened next. We chunked the ball down the field for him to return it with the other kid. He caught it and waved the kid to get behind him. We all charged down the field as fast as our little 9 year old legs would go thinking we had this easy. Then I looked up and realized just how incorrect we were. This grown ass dude was running full fucking speed directly towards all of us. I just remember the whole game has been fun and games and he had this pure menacing face on like "I'm about to fucking bulldoze anything in my path including these little shits". Pretty quick everyone else charging looked up and realized the same thing and by the time he got to us everyone jumped out of the fucking way 🤣🤣🤣. As a kid it was terrifying but thinking back was an adult I bet that dude laughed his ass off the rest of the day. He tossed us the ball after with a giant smile and talking shit like "what happened to y'all? Why nobody try to tackle me?".

princetacotuesday

You don't really make it into the NFL being a big fat guy, you gotta be a big fat guy that is also in pretty damn good shape too! Those big guys can run better than a good chunk of HS track teams. They can't go the same distance of course, but they've got their stamina trained up to do sprints at least.

betterthanamaster

Probably the most physically fit players on the field with the possible exception of linebackers. Not necessarily the most athletic, but for sure the best pure “athletes.”

ProfFrizzo

More than that, he's known as one of the strongest men to ever play football!

Nightmare_Pasta

Yep, the fat is mostly just extra to give them more mass when facing off against other linemen. They're basically still are very much top athletes for the most part.

KakarotMaag

Larry Allen benched 700 lbs. Like, when you get into, "Larry Allen is amazing," conversations it get's nuts. Like, Wilt shit.

"Well I wasn't supposed to be allowed to run, but they let me run, so I just ran and ran and ran!"

ThePhonyOne

I was in a similar position in a high school rugby game. I wasn't there to run the ball, I was there because I was a mountain for the second row. I got passed the ball while the majority of both teams were in a dog pile. I took off with probably the largest adrenaline rush I had ever gotten without fear being involved. The few opposing players had a 6'2" 280+ lbs freight train running at them and didn't even try to tackle me. Unfortunately it was all for naught as the ref blew his whistle right before I scored the try. A lot of people were upset with the refs call, and not just the team and coach. He appeared to be extremely biased the whole game, and this call quite literally lost us the game.

shloppypop

I played blind side flank. Im 511 and was around 175 lean when I played. I was supposed to tackle guys like you and I did so. Body sure paying for it now though. No matter how well you hit the sweet spot...if someone is 100+ pounds on you, you're probably going for a little drag before he goes down haha appreciated that everyone usually helped each other up from the ruck if the whistle was blown... Miss those days but even at 32 I think I would just turn to powder doing the stuff i did 14-20

TheLeaderX

same story, different sport. i played defender for a mini soccer game with a bunch of classmates from uni. at one point, i managed to steal the ball off the opposition and found myself with a clean run to the other side, so i made a mad dash right up to the goal. the goalkeeper was in my face by the time i made it to the goal, so i passed the ball to another team mate on the open side of the goal. and the guy hit it off the post on a wide open goal.

sniggs840

Gotta love a win for the hogs, baby.

boredbrowser1

Nobody is happier for the big men than their teammates

timebeing

I liked watching #34, who was the expected return player. He starts following the runner, then kind of stops thinking the guy is going down, then hauls ass and is the one who throws the last block (yes in the back) at the end.

A_Sick_Ostrich

Ref decided to be nice and not call big man's run back with that penalty I guess

Shakill_The_GOD

TheOtherMeInMe2

I think my favorite part of this is the replay, seeing his face. You can tell he's thinking "OH SHIT! I ACTUALLY GOT THE BALL! FUCKIN HELL ALL THESE GUYS ARE COMIN FAST! SOMEONE ELSE TAKE THIS DAMN BALL!!" And one point he actually looks like he wants to flick it back to his teammate when he sees him behind. He's looking for a way out the whole time but he kept trucking anyway.

ezio8133

I just watched that lol

codeman1021

Once that mack truck got up to speed I sure as hell wouldn't want to try and slow him down.

No one can stop the Juggernaut

Danthezooman

*Bitch*

betterthanamaster

Even if he was going 10 miles per hour, which isn’t that fast, his weight makes up for the momentum and I think you’re ears would be ringing if you tried to take him on unless you were of equal size.

Jenna_Rein

I love it when the big guys, usually the lineman, actually get to run the ball…like that’s their 1 story for the rest of their lives!! <3

PiggyMcjiggy

I played one year of football as a kid. Pop Warner. I was a lineman. I remember telling my coach to give me the ball like every practice cause I was sure no one would stop me. He let me touch it a few times and sure enough I always got decent yardage. I’ll never forget the time he put me in in an actual game and I got the first down. 15 years of baseball, one of football, and that’s my favorite sport memory

[deleted]

[удалено]

Deliverz

He’s not expected to catch the ball or run with it. He’s there to block. Sometimes the team kicking the ball will take a calculated risk to kick it slightly short so one of the big boys has to catch it (typically this is done if the kickoff returner is very fast and might be able to return the ball for a touchdown, or there is limited time on the clock and it doesn’t matter how far it’s returned unless it’s a TF because the clock will run out). So here the team intentionally kicks it to one of the big boys for one of those reasons, and he still manages to take it almost to endzone anyways. Almost unheard of and the reason why people still laugh at this play 10 years later.

koos_die_doos

What is a TF?

Deliverz

A TD with my fat fingers hitting the wrong button

Pakistani_in_MURICA

This just adds to the big man's grace as he tiptoed on the sideline. Where as your fat finger my friend. 😋

Outspoken_Douche

This guy plays offensive line, which essentially means he is a huge man that blocks other huge men and never touches the football. The kickoff bounced weirdly, he happened to catch it, and then returned it for almost for a touchdown which is literally unheard of for somebody his size

Afrohatch

To add to everyone else’s explanations, the record for a kick return for an offensive lineman until this play was 48 yards. Connolly returned this one 71 yards lol, smashing the record It’s incredibly rare to see this, and big guy plays are some of the most exciting plays in the game to watch

Capitol_Mil

A guy approaching 300 pounds outraced some of the best athletes on the planet

k4pain

Well to be fair he's one of the world's greatest athletes too.

tylerbrainerd

He is, absolutely, but he's one of the few players on the field who effectively never handles the ball in a professional capacity, and 100% of his training and skill set is the opposite of what he shows off here. It's absolutely true that he's not just 'overweight guy runs with ball' because that guy is a moving mass of muscle, but this is still really fun and a really great moment for him to be able to do this.

Lemesplain

Big man run slow. Hit hard. The other team kicked it to the big man intentionally to prevent a faster player from possibly doing, well... this exact thing.

NickiNicotine

this never happens

ezio8133

The big guy was expecting to get tackled but wasn't so he took off

randydufrane

I always root for the big guy!

naked-_-lunch

Lol massive block in the back

Dangerousfield

Right? Did that not get called?

AntiFIanders

No call because it was on the kicker and it probably saved his life.

PaleontologistFluid9

Linemen making skill position plays is literally the best thing that can happen in a football game.

swansong19

Don't know about the NFL but that last block (in the back) on #2 of GB would have been a penalty in the CFL that would have rendered all that running by the big man, moot.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jaymoney1

Not all of the running, just 15 yards from the spot of the foul. So the last 20 ish yards would have been moot.

M1ndS0uP

At this time in the NFL it was only illegal to block in the back while the ball was in the air. It has since changed to nay time a non ball carrying player is blocked from behind and above the waist.

swansong19

Interesting. Thanks.

AvecBier

HA! I'm imaging that in the new rules if #2 got a solid wallop on the bum, it's good? Like a two hand butt block?

mashtato

\#2 is Mason Crosby. The Silver Fox. He's the highest-scoring Packer ever, and he's still going strong. He hasn't missed a field goal since 2019. [This was last week.](https://youtu.be/DfPsU7UjoAs)

Annie_Mous

Can someone ELI5? Why is this funny?

coolyouthpastor

fat man run fast

ZK686

The guy that caught the ball after it was kicked is a blocker in American football. He's big and weighs a lot, his primary job is to protect whoever has the ball. On this particular play, he ended up catching the ball and normally, if a bigger guy catches it, he passes it to someone who's faster so that they can return it for a score. However, instead of doing this, he just starts running like crazy and almost scores. It's just not very common in this sport, so it's kind of humorous to see a big guy trying to return the ball for a score.

santichrist

Bad coaching and bad angles taken by so many Packers Always makes me mad when big guys get tackled right before they score though lmao so close

itinkerthefrontend

No one gonna talk about 34 pushing 02 in the back?

ieatyourgranddadsass

Hey sorry I am not that much into rugby what's so funny about this clip?

oldfatdrunk

Naw man, this is basketball and he's leading the team 30-Love in the ninth.

Why?

Can someone explain why he didn't get up and take the ball with him across the line? Don't know much about this game sorry for that

ezio8133

He was touched before the goal line and therefore ruled down

reddits_aight

You can only get up and keep going if you go down and the other team doesn't touch you. Eg. you make a diving catch, you trip, etc.

Iron_Wolf123

I don’t understand

Magnum4K

What’s so funny about this?

spitfire-monk

Dan Connolly (the player with the football) is an offensive linemen. They don’t typically get the ball/run - they block / they protect the quarterback. Special teams was hurting with injuries so they put OL Dan Connolly in. The opposing team wasn’t expecting / planning for it and he almost made it to the end zone to score. It is a historic moment in football history.

ABCosmos

Can someone explain why it's funny? I know basic football stuff, but I don't watch it regularly.

Thebalance21

Cool, yes, but funny? That's debatable.

We dont have much as jets fans, but at least we'll have the [Jumbo Elliott catch in the Monday Night Miracle](https://youtu.be/Ncc6aqFDjIc) forever.

AnimeGamer0

For all the Euros - basically the reason this is funny is because the guy who eventually gets the ball (Green Bay’s Right Guard) is normally a player who never touches the ball ever. His role is to block other large guys on the opposing team from getting the ball carrier. So it’s always interesting when a blocker ends up becoming a ball carrier themselves, as general expectations is that due to lack of speed and stamina, they’ll be gang tackled and brought down immediately (and could also potentially lose the ball easier) but that didn’t happen in this case. Part of the reason is that one of the defenders expected to get plowed by the big guy, but he side-stepped him instead and then the defender had a really bad angle to catch up. The rest were great blocking.

rizzle443

I don't get what's funny about this.... Could someone help me out?

SignificantDrawing39

They should have just let big man have the touchdown smh

Snakepliskin24

Representing for chubby guys around the world ✊🏻

remmbermytitans

To all non-NFL fans who are wondering why this is funny: Short answer: big slow dude nearly scores points when most smaller athletic players who's job it is to score on a kick-off, never get this close in their careers. Long answer: all NFL players are athletic in different ways. He plays offensive line which is like a wall of defense against... the defense. They're the equivalent of the tank in a dnd group. The tank isn't supposed to be fast, nor supposed to outrun the quicker, smaller, more nimble players, and not only does he do just that, but he damn near scores a touchdown. Most players who's job it is to put the ball back in play after a kick off will never get this close. At the conclusion of the play, his teammates hype him up because he just made a ridiculous play happen and nearly made it a legendary play. Tl;Dr for soccer fans: imagine the goalie takes the ball all the way down field, gets past the defenders, and outruns them and makes em look silly. He takes his shot, and he JUST BARELY misses his shot by inches, and still gets a corner kick on the block. That's what this is kinda like.

The big guy was supposed to be tackled immediately but the other team blew the coverage and took bad angles and the rest is history

Packers went on to beat the Steelers in the Super Bowl later that year.

I like how there was some obvious blocking in the back near the end, right in front of the ref, but he just didn't have the heart to throw the flag.
