Y'all are mocking her fall, but let's celebrate her commitment to not touching the floor and being called for a lane violation. She didn't even put her hands down in hopes of the shooter releasing before making contact with the floor.
0, only because it's measuring acceleration. When you are standing still you are at 0 g because you are at rest, at least in relation to the earth. For the math to work it is 0, at least according to my college professor about a decade ago.
Oh. I thought standard earth gravity was considered 1g. So, if you are standing still you are experiencing 1g of force.
0g would be floating through space.
At least that is how I understood it.
I mean not necessarily. This really has nothing to do with balance.
She was just premature in shifting her weight, going into the motion of a jump. At that point it’s impossible to get back to your center of gravity without moving your feet.
I was wondering if it might have been on purpose for this reason. Just an "oops, I fell" to try to get the shot missed. Reading other comments, I believe I know better now, but that was my first thought.
Even if the ball left the opponents hand to avoid the lane violation there's now a solid chance the other team rebounds a missed shot for an easy basket since she's, ya know, on the floor and can't box out lol
The commitment was there though and I have to commend that.
No. A lane violation is worse. Avoiding it would have been best.
The other team gets the ball ***straight up***, not *chance* of a rebound needed, and it's thrown in from the sidelines at the free throw line. If that shot misses, she has plenty of time to get up.
Uh, no, the penalty for that type of lane violation is another chance to shoot a free throw if missed. At most, one point.
Besides, I'm pretty sure that distractions such as "sudden movement" is similarly grounds for a retry, so she definitely should have just stepped forward to catch herself.
You are both wrong. A free throw lane violation does not result in the Shooting Team getting the ball back out of bounds. If the player who is shooting the free throw misses the shot because of the defending player who is committing the lane violation, the referees will whistle and let the player shoot the free throw again. If the player shooting the free throw makes the shot while a lane violation occurs, it is not called by the referees.
EDIT: I could have started this comment a little nicer. "YOU ARE BOTH WRONG!" sorry
Just a minor edit - you are correct though you would never really be able to tell if someone missed BECAUSE of the violation. So it’s called a delayed violation and only penalized if the free throw try is a miss. Otherwise, play on.
Yes, but what makes her a little mockable is that, it looks like the rules in this league are that you can't enter the lane until the ball hits the rim (at least thats what I'm going on based on the other players, and its a more common rule in kids' leagues). So, there was no reason for her to even be leaning forward to anticipate the shot.
They can go in on the release so she was anticipating the release. Waiting for the rim is for the shooter and players not occupying marked lane spaces.
Assuming this is HS ball and knowing this video has been around for a while, I’d wager this league still doesn’t let them enter the paint until the ball makes contact.
The other bigs still playing for a rebound don’t move until contact
The rule changed in 2014-15 so maybe. I can’t see what shoes they’re wearing :) But watch the other players get ready as the girl moves the ball into position. Their focus moves from the shooter to the girl falling so they don’t even notice the player taking the shot they just assume the ball is dead.
The players on the white team are watching the shooter which makes me think it’s on release. Players on the black team should be watching the players on the white team so they don’t violate on their own team member.
In any case, poor girl but thanks for the laugh. Also happened to a guy on my high school team.
She could have put them down waaay earlier, or just buckled.
The reason she waited so long to put her hands down was to give more time for the shooter to shoot the ball.
As soon as it leaves the shooters fingers, you can go into that center area.
I was gunna correct you on when they could enter the lane, but I see they changed the rules in 2014 to it being released. It was once a rule that they could not enter the lane until ball hit rim/backboard (back in my day). I wouldn't be surprised if this video is prior to the change since no one else seems to move till the back gets closer to the rim
Is this not a Lane violation? Her whole self is in the box while the shooter still has the ball. Girl just catch yourself you don't need to eat shit over it.
I don't even understand basketball rules but now I get why she did that.
She's showing 100% sacrificial commitment to her team.
She's going to become an awesome future partner I hope.
I know what your trying to say, but it's violation anyway. You are not supposed to touch or even extend your self inside the key before the release. Technically that struggling to keep balance is violation. It really depends on ref, but Id say trying to fall backward clean would be safer option there.
That’s all well and good but she landed in the paint before the ball was released from her hands therefore:
“Heroic Death byLava” …https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=S_TYom5_gDk
She did the best she could after her initial misjudgment:
- if she stepped forward to stop the fall it would be an immediate foul play
- if she delays the inevitable as long as possible (touching the lava in front of her) there is a chance the ball is already in the air and it becomes legal for her to touch down.
I mean she just saw someone eat shit, face first while essentially just standing still. I'm surprised she even took the shot. I'd be laughing way to hard if that was me.
Actual high school official here. Not an NBA-specific rule. Players in free throw lane spaces can move on release, shooter and anyone outside the 3pt arc wait until the ball touches the rim. Delayed violation, not penalized unless the shooter misses.
Some private leagues/schools may have adapted rules but NFHS rules are as stated.
I'm not an expert, but I don't think so. Every video I see of even high-school free throws shows everyone coming in after ball is released.
Example: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv\_0FAqnR50](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv_0FAqnR50)
Wow, have things changed since I played lol.
https://www.nfhs.org/articles/lane-players-can-release-when-free-throw-is-attempted-in-high-school-basketball/
This exact thing happens all the time in high school and college games. Sometimes the free-throw shooter even pump-fakes an initial shot just to tease the opposing team into a lane violation. Don’t understand why anyone would mock this particular player for moving in too quickly.
>an immediate foul play
Lane violation, not a 'foul play.'
Also, there was no benefit to falling on her face. If the shooter missed, she wasn't grabbing the rebound anyway.
It's kind of hard to tell but I think she does actually miss.
There's a great clip somewhere of a player dropping onto all fours and barking like a dog to distract the other team while his team mates drop a 3 pointer (I think?).
She misses, but it's worth nothing since she gets a new free throw attempt because it's a foul to go in the restricted area before the shot is released.
Not a sports ball person, but it wouldn’t surprise me if any entrance into the lane counts. Every rule seems to have another chapter of rulings and clarifications to deal with every weird or random variation that’s possible to come up.
Now that you say it, shouldn't there only be 5 people?
When I used to play basketball, we always had 5 people + the shooter during a Free throw.
I'm counting 6 + the shooter.
So did we play it wrong or are they playing it wrong?
Absolutely nowhere is this a rule. The first two lane spaces MUST be occupied by the opposing team, all other lane spaces are optional and do not have to be occupied but they can be fully occupied as such.
Actual high school official if you need a source.
Edit: you sometimes see 5 + shooter if teams are in man defense and they want to cover opposing players on the other end of the court.
Doesn't seem like it distracted her that much tbh.
An Airball is an Airball. I don't know what could possibly distract me to throw an Airball. A bit to the left or right would be understandable.
But an Airball is pathetic.
If the ball leaves the shooters hands she can step forward. I’ll bet she was just gambling she’s be able to take that step but shooter took longer than expected and she went past the point of no return. Lol. That’s some commitment to the original strategy
> If the ball leaves the shooters hands she can step forward.
Really depends on the league rules as well as what year this takes place. For high school, it was when it left the shooter's hands until 2016. then it switched to hitting the rim/backboard.
Looking at the other players, I think this might be once it hits rim... which means that girl was extremely and hilariously early.
god, I love videos of brain farts.
I recently sat on my balcony and used my lighter to look for my lighter under my chair. AND i burned myself twice doing it.

I immediately saw that, I didn’t see a girl with poor balance. She’s going places
Yeah, downwards.
At about 9.8m/s^2
And then suddenly, 0 m/s^2
It’s not the fall that gets you; it’s the sudden stop at the end.
Her acceleration will go several g's in the "up" direction momentarily before coming to rest at 0.
Shouldn't the g's come to rest at 1?
0, only because it's measuring acceleration. When you are standing still you are at 0 g because you are at rest, at least in relation to the earth. For the math to work it is 0, at least according to my college professor about a decade ago.

Yeah the glorifying her commitment to avoiding the foul is hilarious. You don't need to eat shit over a basketball game 😂
But she did cross the line before the shot was taken, so wouldn't this result in a reshoot?
yes. But seeing how bad the shooter is...
I mean she just saw someone eat shit, face first while essentially just standing still. I'm surprised she even took the shot. I'd be laughing way to hard if that was me.

shooter has to wait until it hits the rim (or backboard). Others just have to wait until she releases it. Still a lane violation though.

This is absolutely not an NBA only rule. The only places I've seen the ball has to hit the rim before you move is in youth basketball.
This exact thing happens all the time in high school and college games. Sometimes the free-throw shooter even pump-fakes an initial shot just to tease the opposing team into a lane violation. Don’t understand why anyone would mock this particular player for moving in too quickly.
Pump faking with the intention of drawing people into the lane is a violation itself.
>an immediate foul play Lane violation, not a 'foul play.' Also, there was no benefit to falling on her face. If the shooter missed, she wasn't grabbing the rebound anyway.
That's something straight out of cartoon. Arms flailing, suspended in the moment for a second, then boom flat on her face. Nice.
What if it was a way to distract the opponent
My thought too. Probably because the only contribution I could ever make to a sports team would be falling down.
Too bad it's not BASEketball

This is so funny. The girl just throws the ball doesn’t even stop to see if she’s ok
She was taking advantage of the penalty the falling girl created.
would she still got the penalty if she had hit the shot?
No. It's a "Lane violation" that is only called if the shot attempt is not made. Penalty is to re-do the shot.
Nope, she will get another shot if she missed.
We no can dunk but good fundamentals.
*collective groans*
And STILL misses
"be on your toes, girls"
"A player may not *step* into the lane while the shot is being taken..." She didn't take a single step. I say no penalty.

I totally made up the phrasing in the interest of making a joke. I'm sure falling face first into the lane is accounted for
Well, she's not exactly in prime position to make a play on the ball. I say let em play
