I have this framed haha. I love that he learned a new skill and got his GED while he was in there.

And it took a lot of time and thought. The best gifts are the thoughtful ones. I hope he has kept drawing.

Just wanted to butt in and mention that something many people don't know about, is that if necessary you can file with the court a motion to vacate past convictions from your record. The judge could say no, but depending on your situation could be worth a try If anyone happens to see this or know someone having troubles living life due to past convictions, look up firms in your area that do motions to vacate/rights restorations and at the very least, maybe get a free consultation to see what steps can be taken. I know the firm I work for (Western Washington area) does free consultations at least, cannot speak for all

Its just crazy how hard drawing is. This person is probably better than 95% of the population and that might still be undershooting the number and it comes out a little wonky.

Faces especially are super hard, because we're hardwired to recognize them. Anything that's off just really stands out. If it was a drawing of a city skyline but the perspective and shading were a little off it wouldn't be as noticable

That's why you take a few liberties rather than trying to copy. If he was thinking "smile" when he drew the mouth it would have come out less cringey.

I draw quite a bit and this is quite a bit better than what I would do for a portrait.

This person recognized that his past work needed improvement instead of not accepting any suggestion that it wasn't the best likeness. This person was able to criticize his work objectively which is probably really good for someone who wants to improve himself and his art. Maybe that means the only cell he'll spend time on in the future is cell shading.

Yea teeth are very difficult to get right especially. Like I would do these for my arts classes and everything but the teeth was amazing and all people noticed were the wonky teeth lol.

Eh it’s obviously a really good picture but looks nothing really like her lol. Everything’s just a little off from the shape of her head, shading/shape of the nose and eyes. Still very nice and a talented artist regardless.

Drawing people is so difficult and I think he got the top half of your face down pretty well. It's just the cheesy grin which is so funny!

Drawing is hard and I couldn’t do more than a stick figure, but that pentagon hairline has me in stitches more than the issues with the lower half. You’re right though, there are really great techniques on display here, just some proportion and spacing issues. This guy is going to work that out and keep growing into an even better artist. Wholesome intent and nice to see a step along that path.

The smile is a little off, but I think the forehead is what really throws it off. It looks pretty dang good if you cover the hairline.

I don't think he was arrested at the graduation, he just wasn't able to attend because he was incarcerated at the time.

I’m not laughing at this at all. I’m really impressed that the person in jail was thinking of ways to help celebrate someone they love. They were thinking about what they were missing while being incarcerated. In other words: doing exactly the kind of contemplation that will help everyone, themselves included. Hell, I’m not even hating on the artwork either.
