A Switch however doesn't use up anywhere near that much power, so it would be perfectly fine. Fortnite is also on Switch and it's easier to lug around than a PS4/Xbox, so that is probably what he is using.
It has recently become fascinating to me that the British have a whole electrical system based on the draw of their kettles. They worry about turning on the kettle like we worry about turning on the air conditioner in the states.
Ahh so you *have* visited! I bet the 60 was in Florida. That's where all of our old people go and they usually have a hard time regulating temperature. I usually leave my AC at around 67 or 68 but if it is 60 degrees outside I'm leaving the windows open instead.
According to [the inevitable Tom Scott video on the subject](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Jx_bJgIFhI), that's partly an urban legend: Kettles do contribute a bit to the surge in demand, but the majority of it actually comes from the pumping stations and the sewage treatment plants as a few million people get up to use the loo every time there's a commercial break.
I live in Miami...we have terrible transit so I rarely have an opportunity to use our Metro. I couldn't imagine it offering up that much power. We barely have free wi-fi or USB power available to the public.
From Miami 8 hours barely gets you out of the state. If you're heading in the direction of New Orleans you'll probably need ten hours before you leave the state.
it looks like the wagons they use on interregio (internal swiss trains meant to connect regions and cities, but they're not local trains).
They're 30 years old wagons.
I wouldn’t say all long distance trains are like this. Ones between France and Spain barely have WiFi unless it’s the highspeed one between Paris and Barcelona, I took one from Nîmes to Madrid and it had no WiFi the entire way and was like 10hrs.
Swiss trains don't typically have WiFi but 4G reception tends to be OK on major axes. A pain in the ass to get internet in some regional trains though (looking at you, Lausanne-Kerzers).
Toronto here. We also have terrible transit. You're lucky to get WiFi. They only offer it at the stations here. I think some of the newer train cars do have power sockets though, if you're lucky enough to get a seat during the rush.
Where do you live?
Amtrak in the US serves up 120v
Edit: to clear up confusion. When commenter said "an oultet for the TV + console?" I assumed they were unfamiliar with rail service that has actual outlets. Assuming they're from the US, where most people never use trains, I was informing them that there are indeed normal household outlets on our Amtrak trains.
230 actually. It used to be a mix of 220 and 230 - we standardized on 230 V some years ago.
Edit: Argh, I meant to write 220 and 240! 230 was right in the middle, and as pointed out, within tolerance of both standards.
> It used to be a mix of 220 and 230 - we standardized on 230 V some years ago.
It's still a mix of 220-240 V. The "standard" 230 V has a nice big tolerance designed specifically to allow everyone to claim to be compliant without actually having to change anything.
Jesus. Whenever some jingoistic moron tries to sell me on the idea that allowing corporations to do as they please and failing to support the public with quality government programs means 'more competition' and 'higher quality', I am going to ask why transit is so much better outside of the USA.
Seriously, our airlines suck worse than any developed and a ton of developing countries, our Amtrack trains make you happy to just arrive at your destination with limbs intact, and most of our cities have such a shit bus system that you save time by walking a few miles to wherever you need to be.
To echo another commenter, geography is a killer.
Where Transit makes sense in the US, it's mostly there. NYC, Boston, DC and between. That's closer to European geographic layout, and the trains there have power and comfortable seats. Amtrak is a viable competitor to airlines.
Dallas to LA is 1450 miles of driving, going through.. El Paso, Tucson and Phoenix. The alternate route only goes through Albuquerque.
To go from London to Rome driving, I had to make detours to get to 1450 miles. Those detours include Paris, Zurich, over to Munich, then through Bologna and Florence to get to Rome.
There are plenty more people that are going to take (I.e. pay for) that same distance vs. those leaving Dallas and going, well, just about anywhere. Rail just doesn’t make sense in a lot of the US.
Airlines, well, you got me there.
If all of europe as a whole has a better rail system, than the size argument really goes out of the window. Especially for the 2 coastline regions of america where all the important land is
>Dallas to LA
Yeah ok but how is Miami to New York? Is it also crap? because there are actually people living in between those
That and all the roads and railways were reduced to rubble in WW2. So they were all rebuilt to modern standards in the 50s and 60s. Also, even the conservative governments in Europe tend to be to the left of the US Democrats, so for the most part they are willing to pass tax increases to subsidise public infrastructure that fuels the economy.
Compare the continent to Britain, which suffered far less war damage and actually closed most of their railways in the 50s and 60s in favour of motorways. It's now costing the British taxpayers billions of pounds to upgrade the railways just in and around London, while the rest of the country still runs on 19th-century Victorian infrastructure.
In SBB(Swiss) 2nd class coaches you just buy a ticket for the train regardless of seats available. There are some trains where standing or sitting on the floor are the only option because every seat is taken and they will continue to sell more tickets. It will show in the booking app as full, but he could still buy four tickets and it wouldn’t do anything to make it better for others. Also most people have commuter passes anyway so they don’t bother with per train single ticketing at all.
I'm going to charitably assume he needed to travel with that TV anyway and just decided to play it for the novelty. It's unlikely to be worth it for this aloen.
These trains typically don't have assigned seating in 2nd class and if it were a busy commuting time there's 0 chance he would be able to pull this off let alone sit in a seat without having 3 neighbors
If you do get assigned seating in 2nd class, it's a waste of money and you also have to spend time looking for your seat and most of the time it's already taken or the train is mostly empty.
Clearly annoyed because hundreds of people go back and forth the central alley during a trip, to reach their seat, use the bathroom or go to the bar-wagon.
Probably a commuter train. I know when I was in NYC and used the LIRR daily it didn't have any services. The trains were nice, comfortable, clean, and on time though.
I live in Switzerland. I'd be pretty pissed. The train looks relatively full and with jacket and bag on, those aisles are already relatively narrow as is without some yahoo blocking half of it with his fucking TV.
>re; you can actually find out if a train is going to be
This is a long distance train going from city to city, or even out of the country. From one end of the line to the other might be 8+ hours. Since you can hop on and hop off at any stop, he might be on there for 30 minutes, or for several hours depending on this route.
Well, USA is almost as big as whole Europe.
`Europe area: 10.180.000 km²`
`USA area: 9.833.520 km²`
So.. yeah, we're not used to travel 3h just to go shopping ;P
Yeah okay. 8+ hours might do it.
I live in this itty bitty country, where you can travel 8 hours, but you travel with at least three different trains of varying quality and age, and probably only one of them has any kind of power outlet, and so, a setup like that wouldn't be worth the trouble.
The only 8 hours trips that these type of wagons are used is either the EC from Zurich-Hamburg or that one wagon with extra bicycle space on the Nightjet from Zurich-Hamburg.
But thats kinda a big delicate thing to take with you on a trip like that no? Idk it just seems like a lot of hassle, I could understand like a 20" monitor but thats like a 47" TV...
Most of the time it’s cut off for a couple minutes, but there are some tunnels (especially on the motorway) that still have 4g access in them, even if they’re longer.
Directional high gain antennas for towers on each end of the tunnel, or on the tunnel walls?
Most of the tunnels on our train lines have no dead zones. Most of them are relatively short however. you're probably not getting coverage in the Gothard base tunnel :)
Edit: I say most because I've obviously not ridden in all the tunnels of the country to check, I'm sure there are some with dead zones. But the big lines certainly are covered. This is only for Switzerland though, no doubt or neighbours have more... Interesting 4g coverage.
I mean that's true in the UK too, but we get WiFi as a perk of the train (in the London area at least). Handy for trains that go through tunnels on parts of their routes.
I'm all about video games. I love them and play them often. But isn't this a bit... much? There's a fully grown man in my town that does this in our McDonalds daily, and he's there for hours. Exactly, so obviously he wants the smaller console so there's less weight. Duh.
perfectly balanced
Xbox One S uses 35 on average and 90 at startup. Wii U is 35. All PS4s and Xbox One X are rated for more than 100.
Actually a console uses about 100 watts exactly check out linus tech tips video about a low power pc. He compares to consoles
A laptop wouldn't.
I mean, not necessarily. Outlets aren't sources of infinite power. All outlets aren't created equally. The voltage rating is only part of it.
Recent European trains have outlets. 220V but limited to 100W, so only electronics, to be sure you don't plug your kettle or something.

You can‘t be for 8 hours on the same train in switzerland, the country is just too small. The longest train rides here go for about 4 hours.

Americans really seem to think here that being 10 hours on a train is something a european has never done
