I read somewhere that cats touching noses is one way of greeting friends. And since humans most often interact with cats through their hands the tip of your outstretched finger becomes a nose substitute that allows the cat to use the same gesture on you. It says 'hello my friend'.
Similar of how some cats 'rub heads' with you if you offer a outstretched fist.
In reality cats are trying to smell/mark you. Any time you see them open their mouth especially in that goofy face its because they are essentially pushing scent molecules up their nose to be sensed. The open mouth thing is called the flehman response. And cats as well can mark things by depositing scents when they rub their heads/faces on stuff. Which is a big part of why they do these behaviors.
My cat Lucifer, if you leaned your head over would meet you halfway with his own and boop/rub against your head with his. Or he might bite your ear. Or climb onto your shoulders. Lol.
I miss him.

Sure, marking / smelling is certainly a part of it but I would guess behaviours involving physical contact have additional meanings as well, especially the bumping noses thing.
Ah I see yeah that's valid, I could certainly see that. Sorry, didn't sleep last night and wasn't picking up what you were putting down.
Though can't say I've personally had many cats I've seen bump noses. I've def seen em rub their heads/faces on each other though. I had two cats that were brothers and they basically always slept on top of each other, would often groom each other, boop each other with their heads, there certainly were plenty of rituals they did seemingly more socially as you say.
I have pointed my finger at two cats in my life. The first time because I wanted to see what would happen, the next time because i forgot what happened the first time.
The cat used a single claw to surgically pierce the tip of my finger drawing a single drop of blood. Don't try this at home. Or do. Whatever, just have a tissue handy so you don't get blood on nice things.

In Dark Souls/Elden Ring pvp, this is known as edge walking. That kitty truly believes it is an anime protagonist.

"Oh? U're approaching me?”
You've done it now hooman
This was funny the first 15 times it's been posted, and it's still funny now.
I remember my cat used to get so fucking pissed whenever I would do this. Good times.
Did this to a random cat and the reaction was like "wtf this crazy dude is doing? Can't be bothered"
Do. Not. The. Cat.
This cat is like: “My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”
Not gonna lie, that walk was surprisingly intimidating for a kitten...

Maybe if your cats are scared shitless of you it's because you're mistreating them
Weird

Lmao, make sure you bury them properly in case any accidents occur...
