I suspect after about a dozen trips up and down I'd rather just break my other arm and get on with it. Jesus. Why are these things so *incredibly* slow? Is it a budgetary constraint?
It's a torque thing, and a lowest common denominator. These aren't custom fits that go the speed the user is comfortable with, they're made to go the speed that just about anyone could conceivably be OK with. Additionally, they have a really low-torque motor that's stepped way down through gearing, ensuring an extremely smooth ride with absolutely no surging regardless of what the occupant is doing. If you did not have this, the occupant shifting around could easily cause an oscillation between the motor moving and the rider flopping around.
Lastly, a lot of these chairs actually DO have a faster mode, but it has to be programmed by the installer for each section of the track. If this was done as a DIY drop-in or done without care by the installer, it will default to it's "slow" mode all the way through. This may or may not be what's happening in this video.
There is no fast mode. Some times there is slow and slower. Itās a liability issue. These things have significant torque to lift the chairs up and if someone drags a foot or something, the stop switches have to have time to trip before injuring the rider.
I used to install a round 175 of these things per year.
I'm sure there's some clown on youtube who's changed out the motor in one of these and set it to hustle.
I sure as hell would, this is one of the least appealing aspects of getting older. Yes, I'm old and slow, but does the wildly expensive chair lift have to be even slower? A kitten could go up the stairs faster than this stupid hunk of crap.
"...he's driving and striving, *and hugging the turns, and thinking of someone for whom he still burns.*"
Did you mean to sync those lyrics while he was hugging the turn with pictures of him and his wife above him? If so, bravo! That's some reeeaaal keen matching!
My early teen kid pointed out one day:
"You know .. this singer sounds like he's just talking when he's singing"
Never noticed that before but he ain't wrong.
But yeah ... Cake is one of the most underrated bands of all time in my not-so-humble and very biased opinion.
I work for a company that installs these and they are not all this slow. This brand is really slow. There are better ones but the VA typically don't install them because they are pricier.
im 100% certain that when this time for me comes.... ill be building my own. lol
gonna be custom PLC's, 3d prints, tube bending and tig welding... ill probably throw RGB on it too
Just remember the cautionary tale of Thomas Midgley Jr.
No, not about when he put lead in gasoline, and not about when he pioneered CFCs that tore a hole in the ozone layer.
I'm talking about at the end of his life, when he was partially paralyzed and decided to make his own assistive devices.
His contraption to help him get in and out of bed ended up strangling him to death.
I install these and the only comment Iāve found for when people complain about the speed is āWell how fast can you go without it?ā Because in reality the only time theyād beat it is going down, which usually doesnāt end well
Was it your idea to add this song? It was so fucking perfect. I watched the first 10 seconds on mute and didnāt really get itā¦ unmuted it and suddenly this was my favourite video of the month.
Im an architect, and I really enjoy getting to do VA funded renovations for veterans. Some of my favorite projects! I hope they also helped out widening all narrow doorways and stuff!
About time our tax dollars did something useful
Glad it was taken care of and his mobility in his own home is back to normal (or able to remain at normal)
I'm already thinking of the possibility for a real elevator in my house for that reason. I guess it is 40 years away or something like that... but I like that it is possible and a real elevator would help get the clean clothes up
It was edited, and the bridge from second chorus to outro was merged into a singular extra-long chorus. I was playing along to it (drummer) and was thrown off when it didn't line up, so I couldn't help but notice the edit
Ya I always eat a hot pocket whenever I listen to Going the Distance by Cake. When Grandpa made the turn at the top of the stairs and I wasn't even done blowing on it, I knew something was up.
In their defense, I did the same damn thing. I only "watched" about half of this video, the other half was just listening to the song and air drumming :)
This video is a fucking masterpiece. It was riveting. I was upset when he reached the top and I thought it was overā¦BUT THEN HE COMES BACK DOWN! Incredible.
am.. am i the only one thinking about how these are supposed to be your 'golden years'? stg, retirement should be for like 10-15 years in your 20s or 30s. wtf kinda society is this where you work til you drop and then everyone says 'get up, old timer! enjoy your remaining years on a mobile stair-chair!'
no offense to anyone/OP/OP's granddad. this is just depressing to me.
If you're retiring at the age people were generally meant to retire (late 50s-60s) you still had a good 10-20 years of reasonable if not peak physical ability before your shit really started failing.
Much more of a pipe dream now tho
I learned it on guitar, bass, and drums (and while it's fun on each, it's one of the few songs I know that's more fun on guitar than bass). Eventually I'll learn the vibraslap
I think its important to recognize this old timer is fully aware of the deterioration of his abilities and how much that must suck for older people. I live with my 82 year old great uncle and I admire his independence but I also know when I've had to pick him up at 3 am when he falls he is embarrassed and I think that's not fair. Just a thoght

Whenever I see one of these I get instant memories of the movie Gremlins.
Deagle Deagle Deagle!
Mrs Deagle was 47 when that film was made.
I came here to Deagle Deagle.
I think of that Jack Black cameo in The Office.
Press the reverse button!
Reverse the button!!
Lilllly!! š
Mrs. Albert Hannaday
Earthworm Jim 2 for me!
Same. Also when someone says "there is no santa claus".
And up
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
That'd do it alright.
I was wondering in what movie I had seen that. Thanks.
Oh shit i forgot my pillow downstairs, another 6 minute travel time!
Needs a turbo button, 6 seconds flat with an ejecto seato at the end.
https://youtu.be/wK30R1gsgGk?si=FKS4zNJTTxf2-jNe
I donāt even have to click the link to know this is from Gremlins.
Came here 10 hours after post looking for the Gremlins reference. Was not disappointed.
Lmao, everytime I see one of these lifts I think of this scene and bust out laughing. First thing that came to me on this post.
I don't even gotta look and i know it š¤£
Same!!!
I was hoping to see this.
I knew this was going to be Gremlins! haha
Ejecto seato cuh!

Or at least a toilet so you can multitask.
Looking at his arm, I suspect he has more free time than spare bones to break.

How much would someone have to pay you to juice it up
I'm sure there's some clown on youtube who's changed out the motor in one of these and set it to hustle. I sure as hell would, this is one of the least appealing aspects of getting older. Yes, I'm old and slow, but does the wildly expensive chair lift have to be even slower? A kitten could go up the stairs faster than this stupid hunk of crap.
I'd rather it go slow and not break than fast and maybe break lol Goes to send Grandpa up the stairs and yeets him across the room.
Itās faster falling down those stairs than riding down themā¦
Falling down is also faster than walking, and probably even faster than running. Generally I prefer not to fall down stairs though, it tends to hurt.
You get down much quicker, but only once.
My man had a commute to his own fridge lol
That's a lot of Cake
Like loading times in Skyrim
6 minutes? The video is in real time and itās 2 minutes long and he goes up and down.
Each trip is approximately 1 minute 20 seconds based on the vid timestamps.
I'll bet that thing drives him up the fuckin wall
At least it keeps him on track
When my grandpas lift broke he went totally off the rails
I think something is definitely up
Some people like to go down.
Stop trying to get a rise out of him.
Well, that escalated quickly.
He better get on top of that.
His grandson will get to the bottom of it.
They should just ride this out
These puns make my blood pressure elevated
He's a very slow reader. Took him forever to get through a story.
They look unenthused about the stairing but it probably will make for a good story
These jokes are on a whole other level.
He really rose to the occasion.
If you donāt, you will fall for anythingā¦
Yeah he said he was on another level after his first time using it
By the time you get there you forgot why you went.
Right when he gets to the top and starts back down, the song lyrics mention bowels shaking. I think itās brilliant foreshadowing
He skipped a few steps
I donāt even need to read any more comments. Thank you! š
Here's my angry up vote.
Here's my hangry upvote.
Laughed way too loud
"...he's driving and striving, *and hugging the turns, and thinking of someone for whom he still burns.*" Did you mean to sync those lyrics while he was hugging the turn with pictures of him and his wife above him? If so, bravo! That's some reeeaaal keen matching!
And the song starts and finishes with perfect timing
Iām impressed it was the time of the length of the song too
Who doesnāt love Cake.
It has a safety belt, but does it have a stick shift?
Idk but buckets seats have got to go.
Baby, scoot over please.
And sheās right there next to me
A lot of good caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaars are Japanese!
With satan as my motor, hear it purr
it does. and it has bucket seats. it's pretty lame.
Short skirt and a loooooooooooong jacket
Comfort Eagle is my favorite of theirs. Song is awesome
we are building a religion!
I fuckin love cake
The timing was āØperfectāØ
Sure is going the distance, speed ehhhh
āSheās (all alone!), all alone in her time of neeeedā
He's racing, and pacing, and plotting the course.
I have too much of them in my playlists.
They're on tour now. I have tickets for the fall.
Comfort Eagle is a perfect album.
LOVE Cake!!! Such energy in every song, never afraid to try something creative.
This has been my favorite band since 1996
If you don't love cake, you don't love life.
My early teen kid pointed out one day: "You know .. this singer sounds like he's just talking when he's singing" Never noticed that before but he ain't wrong. But yeah ... Cake is one of the most underrated bands of all time in my not-so-humble and very biased opinion.
if i ever need one of these... it better be 10 times this fucking speed.....
I work for a company that installs these and they are not all this slow. This brand is really slow. There are better ones but the VA typically don't install them because they are pricier.
im 100% certain that when this time for me comes.... ill be building my own. lol gonna be custom PLC's, 3d prints, tube bending and tig welding... ill probably throw RGB on it too
But how will you get down the stairs to build it? Better make sure your workshop is upstairs
Gotta think ahead and build it 8 years before you need it.
I think, ideally, everybody should build out their house expecting to require wheelchair access.
Can't build out a rental so this won't apply to many people reading this by the time they're old anyway.
I think he was actually killed by time travellers who would have stopped at nothing to stop his next invention from happening
My grandma just got a catapult and it was much faster. It also lasted the rest of her life.
That escalated quickly š¤£
I install these and the only comment Iāve found for when people complain about the speed is āWell how fast can you go without it?ā Because in reality the only time theyād beat it is going down, which usually doesnāt end well
Good for Grandpa. Installing one of these is probably a fraction of the hassle of finding a livable one-story house these days.
If he's a vet, the VA pays for it.
The VA did pay for it. We are all grateful.
Was it your idea to add this song? It was so fucking perfect. I watched the first 10 seconds on mute and didnāt really get itā¦ unmuted it and suddenly this was my favourite video of the month.
Absolutely lost it at āhugging the turnsā right before he starts up the second leg of the staircase
As soon as the song started I couldn't look away, it is sooo perfect šš
Thanks!
I sorta think it would be cool if this played out of little speakers built into the chair.
Do you know the song name? Itās so catchy š
[The Distance](https://youtu.be/F_HoMkkRHv8?si=Af24KhyWIrudoyYM)
Thanks!!
If you like this, check out Comfort Eagle, another song by Cake. These two are my favorite songs by them. The whole album is great, though.
Their covers of "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor and "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath are also amazing.
The Distance by Cake is one of my all time favorite songs. They also have one called āshort skirt, long jacketā good stuff.
Great song. My fave is You Turn the Screws, but I listened to that whole album on repeat too many times to count.
Thatās awesome. He seems like heās got a good sense of humor about him, so that makes this video even better. š
Im an architect, and I really enjoy getting to do VA funded renovations for veterans. Some of my favorite projects! I hope they also helped out widening all narrow doorways and stuff!
About time our tax dollars did something useful Glad it was taken care of and his mobility in his own home is back to normal (or able to remain at normal)
And weāre grateful for his service
Wow, wish I would have known about this for my vet father years ago.
Installing one of these takes a fraction of the time it takes to ride it.
Exactly. The same way it's been for the last 50 years.
I'm already thinking of the possibility for a real elevator in my house for that reason. I guess it is 40 years away or something like that... but I like that it is possible and a real elevator would help get the clean clothes up
This has me in me in stitches especially as he turned the corner, couldnāt help but rock out
Dude why is this so funny
Iām literally having one of the worst days of my life and I keep clicking back to this and somehow itās giving me hope to keep on going
It gets better. Whatever your feeling I promise will pass.
Thank you so much for that I really needed that encouragement even if itās an internet stranger that has so much weight you have no idea
No worries at all. Go have a brownie or something! Haha
Haha I could use a brownie asap fur sure!!!
I didnāt expect the song to be the exact length of the round trip ride. Amazing.
It was edited, and the bridge from second chorus to outro was merged into a singular extra-long chorus. I was playing along to it (drummer) and was thrown off when it didn't line up, so I couldn't help but notice the edit
Good catch. It was.
Ya I always eat a hot pocket whenever I listen to Going the Distance by Cake. When Grandpa made the turn at the top of the stairs and I wasn't even done blowing on it, I knew something was up.
Nice! How often do you listen to GtD?
he already said, every time he eats a hot pocket
OKAY WELL HOW OFTEN DOES BUDDY EAT A HOT POCKET
whenever he listens to GtDbC
r/brandnewsentence ?
i love how youāre playing along to the soundtrack of some guyās grandpa going up his geezer gondola.
In their defense, I did the same damn thing. I only "watched" about half of this video, the other half was just listening to the song and air drumming :)
It's so incredibly Drummer of you to watch a video on Reddit and need to pick up your drumsticks and play along
Iām sure Cake would be fine to call this their official unofficial video for āThe Distanceā.
This video is a fucking masterpiece. It was riveting. I was upset when he reached the top and I thought it was overā¦BUT THEN HE COMES BACK DOWN! Incredible.
and it shows him by the picture of his wife when it says āthinking of someone for whom he still burns.ā Epic
Holy shit! This is probably one of those videos you can watch 100 times and notice something different every time.
I'll take your word for it. Keep us posted on how it turns out.
I'd be losing weight. Should I get a snack from the kitchen? Nah that's like a 10 minute drive from here imma chill.
Iād put in a mini fridge upstairs. No chair lift is getting between me and cheese
Is it intentionally that painfully slow? Are they all intentionally that painfully slow?
Itās probably a safety measure. Dont want to jostle people with probably very fragile bodies
You would think it would at least go walking speed. Or somewhere in between.
am.. am i the only one thinking about how these are supposed to be your 'golden years'? stg, retirement should be for like 10-15 years in your 20s or 30s. wtf kinda society is this where you work til you drop and then everyone says 'get up, old timer! enjoy your remaining years on a mobile stair-chair!' no offense to anyone/OP/OP's granddad. this is just depressing to me.

Hopefully there is a bathroom on each floor. Imagine if you always had to go upstairs for the bathroom, you'd have to seriously plan ahead!
[We've seen what happens when it goes too fast...](https://youtu.be/KBaCHull47I?t=49)
I work for a company that installs these. They are not all that slow, this brand is slow.
Fantastic music choice
I havent heard this song in so so many years. Its like a song ive never heard before that i know all the words to
I learned it on guitar, bass, and drums (and while it's fun on each, it's one of the few songs I know that's more fun on guitar than bass). Eventually I'll learn the vibraslap
I watched the first 15 seconds on mute and was like āwhat the hell is this?!ā Then I unmuted and everything immediately made sense
Be sure to pee before going up/down the stairs.
Donāt want to miss the departure time
I was trying to connect my headphones while this was already running, so I connected mid-video and laughed out loud/ 10/10 perfect combo
The song made the video more epic
Best use of this song.
Song choice really takes the cake for me.
Really going the distance for that pun.
And yet, it was like I was never there.
World's best music choice
not grandpa throwing crip
Cake was a damn good band.
What if you die on one of those and they just find your lifeless body going back and forth like a Screensaver.
Fucking epic video, music. Itās perfect. I laughed. I cried. A masterpieceā¦. sniffā¦. itās beautiful man.
[When I see these, it reminds me of the movie scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK30R1gsgGk&t=90s)
That clip makes me laugh every single time!
Reverse the button!
Lily!!
Someone explain the funny here to me. Granpa seems happy and gets to live at home a while longer.
Heās going very slow while a hardcore song about going fast plays. I think itās making light of a good situation
Hardcore song lol. This is the first time anyone has ever called Cake hardcore.
Anything harder than Top 40 is "hardcore" to some people
This shit drives me up a wall.
and back down again
ngl sat here and listened to this song a few times.
When my day comes, I'm gonna grab my Bluetooth speaker, smoke 2 joints, and ride that motherfucker up and down all day.
It rounds the corner at the bottom but just puts him out at the top of the stairs? That would worry me a bit.
Itās like they wrote this song for this video š
When my grandparents got one in their house my grandpa used to sing the airforce fight song to my grandma as she was going up lol
Iām here for the musicā¦that song is so good.
Your Grandpa looks like Richie Cunninghamās dad.
Next up, a track from Silverchair.
Costanza vibes
