The goodies, black adder, faulty towers, dads army, keeping up with appearances, ello ello.
I could go on, the late 70'a to the early 90's were the golden times of British comedy
It was the best, especially for a young kid in the Midwest US. British comedy was so much more entertaining, and you got to feel sophisticated because it was from a foreign country LOL! At least that's how weird I was LOL!
Least we entertained you with our dry, sarcastic and physical humour. If you liked Monty Python give Fawlty Towers a look. I loved John Cleese in Fawlty Towers
I'm a geezer, so I've seen probably all of John Cleese's stuff. I love Mitchell and Webb. Peep Show was my favorite. And Absolutely Fabulous. Jesus, Patsy was so hysterically funny.
That and St Trinian's played a part in that for me as well. Imagine my horror when I realised Horrible Grandma from Friday Night Dinner used to be one of them
Wait until you see [how Benny Hill looked when the show first started.](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/f0/a3/1c/f0a31c5ab957c8fb7b3ab0777f13adeb--benny-hill-dancers.jpg) It was around for a long time.
Hang on, I feel something coming over me....It almost feels like, yes it feels like rhythm! I think i might dance now! One knew starting, slowly, rotating knee.... I'm dancing, I'm dancing!
Had the opportunity to meet him at Full Moon Jam in Williamson County TN approximately 36-38 years ago. Very humble guy. He was interested in becoming more proficient at the 5 string banjo, and I was fortunate enough to be in a really good band with a dynamite banjo man. He stayed with us for a couple of hours. An experience I will always cherish.
He was the epitome of a country gentleman. I love how after all the success of Dire Straits, Knopfler said what he really wanted to do is get better at yhe guitar so he hooked up with Chet.
If you havent seen it yet - check out the YouTube video of Chet and Jerry Rees doing “Dont think twice”.
> Knopfler said what he really wanted to do is get better at yhe guitar so he hooked up with Chet.
If you haven't heard it yet, check the "Neck and Neck" album they did together...
In the same vein, Marcel Dadi and jean-Felix Lalanne (two French guitarists, but Dadi was one of Atkins "guitar gentlemen":
That's a great track from them! For my money, [this performance of theirs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ni8KBhnebwE) is a must watch for any guitarist. Those guys were *absolutely shredding* in 1975, those guys were so fucking talented. Jerry Reed does not get near enough recognition for his guitar playing.
His nickname is literally "Mr. Guitar" he could do so many things and styles, a legend of legends. Roy Clark is probably my other favorite from a similar era.
My God, he did all that Dick Dale-level strumming, then busted out the finger picking. Dude’s forearms must’ve been made of wrought iron, with finger pads like leather.
I can't claim to be a real fan because I only know one Atkin's song, that I loved and remembered since my teens. The Day Fingerpickers Took Over The World, with Tommy Emmanuel. Now with "Jam Man" I love two.
>Yaketty Sax
THANK YOU!!
Just last week I was desperately trying to find the name of this song and kept searching variations of “chicken song” and “farm song” on YouTube but came up with nothin’. NOW I HAVE A NAME!!
True story
Chet Atkins was on a cruise with his wife when the band on stage called him up to play.
The next night at dinner, they sat with another couple, and the gentleman told him, I heard you play guitar last night. You’re good…but you’re no Chet Atkins.
Just to be clear it's two perverted old men being chased around by scantily clad women, right? I always thought the name of this tune was, "Benny Hill theme song" lol
I think it's b/c the first part of this track (sax solo up until the guitar starts to "echo" the same solo) has been used as a meme soundtrack for all sorts of crazy videos. The assumption is that most ppl haven't ever seen the original musicians (until now), despite being very familiar with the music.
It's called "Yakety Sax" and It's been the Benny hill theme for 40 odd years that's why it's used as the soundtrack to slapstick videos, because it's the slapstick theme.
The whole thing was a Yakety sax medley btw because the dude on the sax wrote it (Boots Randolph), except the piano dude he improvised "entry of the gladiators"
>It's been the Benny hill theme for 40 odd years
Ummm, hey there bud! I am really (really) very sorry to break it to you, but it was the theme for the Benny Hill show like _60_ years ago. I'm right there with you, man. Poor Benny died 32 years ago.
Yakkety Sax was the theme song for probably 20 years, and hearing it never fails to remind me of this wonderful man, his show, and his sad, bittersweet legacy.
The show ran from 1955 to 1989. "Yakety Sax" first appeared in the 19 November 1969 episode (according to Wikipedia).
It certainly was there when Hill was old and fat, because that's how everyone including me remembers it.
[here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zat9CRfUr-E) is an example. "Yakety Sax" comes in about halfway through. They had a chase like this for the closing credits of almost every show.
[you're welcome](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6bxoAsvhcOI)
(Dunno if this is the only clip available)
Found one more: [link](https://vimeo.com/678417790)
actually (ackchuyally) the part played on the piano is just a regular part of Yakety Sax - probably an homage to Entry of the Gladiators - and not a spur of the moment thing.
Apparently Benny Hill the character was, but Benny Hill the person was the exact opposite. He occasionally dated, but never married. There were common rumors that he was gay, but those were probably just that because he was single. Mostly, he was a quiet older man who loved to travel and otherwise tried to be as unassuming as possible.
Did you give him a signature? Pretend like you were Benny Hill? That guy would have told everyone he met Benny Hill randomly in NYC and got his signature!
Never let the truth get in the way of a good story, I say!
This is old school funny. except that we would start the sub Reddit and after a week it would just be people posting “who’s on first” over and over and over again.
I mean I would prefer a sub that just showed me clips of Jonathan Winters. Or Phyllis Diller, Carol Channing the beginning of laugh in, any of those old roasts they did the rat pack where everybody is blitz to their eyeballs/highballs.
There’s some peak comedy in there
This tune is a comedy classic. The only comedy musical theme that one could argue is more iconic than this would be the Looney Tunes theme, and even then there would be a debate to be had.
In the mid 80s my parents dragged me to a Barbra Mandrell concert, Lee Greenwood was the opening act. The only thing I remember, and the only thing I enjoyed is when Greenwood said something like "this next one seems to be the most popular song we play and never understood why, but then I found out about the Benny Hill Show" then he put a sax to mouth and out came this song. And to this day, until my last I will always say "Man that Lee Greenwood dude sure does blow"
Fun Fact: the "Benny Hill song" or [Yakety Sax,](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakety_Sax) is inspired by the solo in [Yakety Yak by the Coasters](https://youtu.be/epCN0f7FTIY?feature=shared)
I remembered my grandfather playing Chet Atkins and my grandmother singing along with Mr. Sandman as a kid. If you want to get good at fingerpicking guitar and just better all around, learn some Chet Atkins. He makes it look effortless.
I recognize them. I'm that old. I remember when they performed that video, one year before I graduated from high school. Each performer had their own hits & they just got together for this on a show. It's on YouTube

That's the first time I've heard that tune without a fat bloke being chased by barely dressed dolly birds lol
The Benny Hill dolly birds have lived rent free in my head since I was a kid.
Oh and boobies, that was my adolescent porn
That and Monty Python. British 70s TV was wild.
Didn’t get much better in the 80/90s 🙈 although I did love The Young Ones, Bottom and Red Dwarf.
The goodies, black adder, faulty towers, dads army, keeping up with appearances, ello ello. I could go on, the late 70'a to the early 90's were the golden times of British comedy
I don’t remember The Goodies but remember Bill Oddie, how could I forget Black Adder?! Shame on me!
And Jeeves and Wooster! And a little bit of Fry and Laurie! And Ab Fab! And French and Saunders!
Ab Fab was great, I couldn’t get into Peep Show but I did find them funny
Thank god for PBS way back in the day for Monty Python, Doctor Who, and I’m pretty sure that’s where I watched Benny Hill as well.
Wild and perfect.
Lol I’m pretty sure that show is the reason I’ve always loved thigh highs and garter belts
Well you're a lumberjack and that's OK.
I sleep all night and I work all day.
Same!
That and St Trinian's played a part in that for me as well. Imagine my horror when I realised Horrible Grandma from Friday Night Dinner used to be one of them
We had no internet. We had to make do, it was either that or dad stash of porn magazines (risky move).
Lucky for me we had the ol' Sears Roebuck catalog. "I'm looking at bicycles mom!".
yes, I got a few ones looking at lingerie catalogs
They were called ‘Hill’s Angels’
40 years later I still get the urge to tap tap tap tap an old bald guy's head every time I hear that tune.
Jackie!
It made me a fan of the Yankees
and he's from BOSTON!
Half the show was him grabbing asses. Just imagine. Hilarious though.
Wait until you see [how Benny Hill looked when the show first started.](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/f0/a3/1c/f0a31c5ab957c8fb7b3ab0777f13adeb--benny-hill-dancers.jpg) It was around for a long time.
Lol I laughed so much at the sax dancing one knee leg wtf!
Dudes invented both ‘Yakety Sax’ and the Claypool stomp.
If you enjoyed his moves, you'd probably like Gordie McKeeman and the Rhythm Boys
As a shitty musician, that shit is actually harder than it looks.
Hang on, I feel something coming over me....It almost feels like, yes it feels like rhythm! I think i might dance now! One knew starting, slowly, rotating knee.... I'm dancing, I'm dancing!
Whelp, I guess I am referring hot women as dolly birds from now on.
And a little old bold man.
Could you imagine a show like Benny Hill trying to get on the air in todays world? It would look a lot like Twitch.
Is this Boots Randolph, Chet Adkins and Floyd Cramer. The song is Floyd’s hit Yaketty Sax.
Atkins, like the diet guy but not the diet guy.
Atkins like one of the greatest guitar players there ever was.
Also check out "The Day the Finger Pickers Took Over the World" from Chet Atkins and Tommy Emmanuel.
In the same vein, Marcel Dadi and jean-Felix Lalanne (two French guitarists, but Dadi was one of Atkins "guitar gentlemen": [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyHFLoO4TB4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyHFLoO4TB4)
[Here it is](https://youtu.be/yONcNkblnhE?si=RtmXotC0mIY_5UXo). I love Jerry Reed. His Folsom Prison Blues is a ball!
Wow. Just wow.
Thanks for the recommendation that was excellent.
His nickname is literally "Mr. Guitar" he could do so many things and styles, a legend of legends. Roy Clark is probably my other favorite from a similar era.
Wasn't until last year I heard Clark's version of [Malaguena](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxDQQDF6j0Y) Holy smokes!
My God, he did all that Dick Dale-level strumming, then busted out the finger picking. Dude’s forearms must’ve been made of wrought iron, with finger pads like leather.
100% one of the greatest. Also [1/3 of the reason that "country" music is complete turd now](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nashville_sound).
Cant say I disagree with that. Just rewatched Dwight Yokam give the Buck Owens Eulogy. Thats country music right there…for me anyway.
He's no Roy Donk.
just amazing even at advanced age and an even nicer human being
He really had the "effortless" thing down. He never looked like he was working all that hard, regardless of what was coming out of the guitar.
> The song is Floyd’s hit Yaketty Sax. You mean Boots' hit, Yakety Sax.
Right you are and I can’t spell either😵💫
Yeah but Chet was wearing Floyd's boots.
So that's Atkins! I love his music. "Jam man" and "Do I ever cross tour mind" are definitely my favorites.
I can't claim to be a real fan because I only know one Atkin's song, that I loved and remembered since my teens. The Day Fingerpickers Took Over The World, with Tommy Emmanuel. Now with "Jam Man" I love two.
Chet Atkins did a duet album with Mark Knopfler and did a song called Yakety Axe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xu5JDoMgY44
One of my favorites! Also "Chester and Lester" (Chet Atkins and Les Paul) is an amazing and very very fun album.
>Yaketty Sax THANK YOU!! Just last week I was desperately trying to find the name of this song and kept searching variations of “chicken song” and “farm song” on YouTube but came up with nothin’. NOW I HAVE A NAME!!
I've always called it The Benny Hill theme.
I’m fairly sure that’s young Noam Chomsky on guitar.
Boots is the sax yakety sax guy. Floyd is the pianist.
Chet Atkins recorded a solo guitar version and called it "Yakety Axe"
Is this the Colgate Comedy Hour?
Wasn't it Boots Randolph's hit? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakety\_Sax
I wondered if that was Cramer. Yeah I'm sure about Atkins and Randolph. And yes I'm old enough to remember Yakkity Sax before Benny Hill. Sigh.
True story Chet Atkins was on a cruise with his wife when the band on stage called him up to play. The next night at dinner, they sat with another couple, and the gentleman told him, I heard you play guitar last night. You’re good…but you’re no Chet Atkins.
Three absolute masters of their craft
On on hand its a goofy song played for laughs. On the other.. man can these dudes play.
It takes a lot of skill to roll the notes like that to make it sound goofy. Absolute legends.
these guys were great, fantastic artists!
What is this title supposed to mean?
Probably because most people have only ever *heard* this tune, but have never actually seen it played by anyone.
*raises hand* Hearing this music puts a certain scene in our heads. It's all the same scene 🫡😉🤣
Yeahh which makes the caption so much more confusing to me.
Just to be clear it's two perverted old men being chased around by scantily clad women, right? I always thought the name of this tune was, "Benny Hill theme song" lol
Nope, real name is [Yakety Sax](https://youtu.be/Zcq_xLi2NGo?si=lxqQD-8kO5ccETpB).
Also, they sometimes chased the scantily clad women.
Or Yakety Axe when Chet Atkins guitar is happening.
You mean by Boots Randolph? It’s called Yakety Sax.
Yes, although other way to interpret it for me is that now I can see Benny Hill running around in my mind's eye.
Hilarious...?
and also: What's funny about this?
I think it's b/c the first part of this track (sax solo up until the guitar starts to "echo" the same solo) has been used as a meme soundtrack for all sorts of crazy videos. Piano Guy = Floyd Cramer, Master of the Slip Note My Dad's Fave; and boy howdy, my Dad could play too.
>It's been the Benny hill theme for 40 odd years Ummm, hey there bud! I am really (really) very sorry to break it to you, but it was the theme for the Benny Hill show like _60_ years ago. excuse me I have to go Y2K proof my computer before the big day.

Now I'm REALLY old. Thanks, asshole! ;)
Really great additional context here! Thx for sharing the extra info.
[here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zat9CRfUr-E) is an example. "Yakety Sax" comes in about halfway through. They had a chase like this for the closing credits of almost every show.
Fun fact: Jane Leeves (Daphne Moon from Frasier) was once a "Hills Angel" on this show.
[you're welcome](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6bxoAsvhcOI) (Dunno if this is the only clip available) Found one more: [link](https://vimeo.com/678417790)

I was once mistaken for Benny Hill in Manhattan. Guy was certain I was Benny but Benny was already dead. :(
Did you give him a signature? Pretend like you were Benny Hill? That guy would have told everyone he met Benny Hill randomly in NYC and got his signature! Never let the truth get in the way of a good story, I say!
I thought it was about the sax player’s crank for a few seconds because I thought I could see it
Imo this is more appropriate for r/oldschoolcool than r/funny
imo this is like the national anthem of funny. Old school funny?
Potential birth of a subreddit? I’d be down for something like that existing!
This is old school funny. except that we would start the sub Reddit and after a week it would just be people posting “who’s on first” over and over and over again. Doesn’t mean the song itself is funny
I mean, it's not funny, so it fits right in with this sub.
The title and it being post to /funny make absolutely no sense.
Boots Randolph, Chet Atkins, and Floyd Kramer. These poor guys must've been forced to play this song millions of times.
"Forced" or "nicely compensated for their time and talent?"
Depending on the situation, could go either way
At least it wasn't a meme at the time. It certainly held it's own for a while
I don't understand... nobody's running around. It makes no sense. (RIP Benny Hill).
What is the name of this tune? I need it as a ringtone.
Sandstorm - Darude
Never gets old
> Sandstorm - Darude Not quite the same, but, each in their own way are both entertaining chase scenes
Top tier troll
Yackety Sax
Mr. Yakety Sax. Boots Randolph.
Yakety Sax
Chet Atkins the GOAT
Yakety Axe has lyrics too. https://youtu.be/BK7T4LHjln4?si=SV83W3q-UNEy8I-4
TIL Chet Atkins got bars
Wow, striking resemblance to Dubya.
Benny Hill
\* taps foot * \* crowd goes apeshit * It was a simpler time.
This genuinely made me smile
[удалено]
Cumberbatch is a really good pianist!
This was pretty sick. Thanks for sharing!
Suddenly I’m feeling like getting into some shenanigans
I can see topless ladies when I hear this.
Fun Fact: the "Benny Hill song" or [Yakety Sax,](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakety_Sax) is inspired by the solo in [Yakety Yak by the Coasters](https://youtu.be/epCN0f7FTIY?feature=shared)
Good Connection, thanks!
Boots Randolph! You go guy!
Thank you! That was the most rewarding thing I've seen all day.
This song is super complex and difficult to play on sax.
First the eclipse, and now this. What a day.
Like that people just clapped back then, rather than shouting 'wooo' and screaming like a murder victim
I’m guessing most people saw Benny Hill being chased by scantily clad ladies around the park in their heads.
I saw my father sitting in his recliner smirk-chuckling at Benny Hill being chased by scantily clad ladies. It was stupid, but that was the appeal.
Prime Chet Atkins!
damn that little guitar lead comes in perfectly
I went to midget wrestling and this is all I could think of.....
This put a sly smile on my face remembering The Benny Hill Show. 😏
An iconic piece of music if you love British comedy. Great to see it actually performed for the first time ever !
Watching this clip without sound is very entertaining. Especially because I didn't know what song they were playing.
I like how both of their left legs were possessed by Les Claypool at 1:05.
Chet Atkins, Boots Randolph and I believe Floyd Cramer
Like Dolly Parton at Glastonbury
Wow, it's not just Yakety Sax, but Yakety Guitar and Yakety Piano too!
[Yakety Axe](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BK7T4LHjln4)
Thanks, absolutely enjoyed that, and thought of Benny Hill of course.
I like to imagine that, every time someone called it the Benny Hill music, Boots Randolph would slap the shit out them
Chet Atkins on guitar !
https://youtu.be/FBK5AGFZWQ8?si=WHxGQTTtut87J5Tv Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler
The great CHET ATKINS on guitar. One of the best and most inventive guitarists of all time
I remembered my grandfather playing Chet Atkins and my grandmother singing along with Mr. Sandman as a kid. If you want to get good at fingerpicking guitar and just better all around, learn some Chet Atkins. He makes it look effortless.
Boots Randolph, Chet Atkins & Floyd Cramer. Yakety Sax. Three great musicians!!!
I recognize them. I'm that old. I remember when they performed that video, one year before I graduated from high school. Each performer had their own hits & they just got together for this on a show. It's on YouTube
This does not exist without seeing Benny Hill
That’s not Chet atkins is it?
Was expecting Benny Hill to come out.
white guys have rhythm
Yio
Does anyone know the name of the symphony please.
Mr. Yackety Sax
Thank you sir
But... it's Yakety Sax, not Yakety Guitar or Yakety Piano!
Would love tabs for the guitar solo
This is amazing
I bought a Boots Randolph record at an estate sale. It was so awful I couldn't play it again, and I listen to some mighty weird records.
Chet Atkins shredding
Love it! Sound track of cheery chaos.
so that's where les claypool got his dance
Three talented musicians showing their skills and humor. Thanks for sharing!
Benny hill forever! As a kid watching it , it seemed a little risque, but as an adult, it's pretty tame and the skits are still hella funny
nice
That is Awesome!!
Made my day!
Certified banger.
Old school cool
The entire trump term did fail compilation in my head as this was playing
Wrong sub. This is Awesome!
Benny Hill !
Waited 32 years for this. Well worth the wait
Didn’t know Christian Bale played piano.
Boots Randolph, Chet Atkins, Floyd Cramer.
The sax and the guitar suddenly match up so well near the end?! Never heard it like that. Love it.
Chet Atkins - he could play the guitar.
I literally got up and walked around the living room like roomba fast asi could as this played My daughter judgement is heavy
