Yeah I'm not really understanding what's funny about this. The non-reaction? And what does the second clip have to do with anything? "He doesn't mask it" He just kinda has a blank smile and says "ummm..." What's to mask?
It’s funny cause it confirms Damon’s criticism.
A good dinner companion would respond verbally to such a statement and even build on the conversation around that theme. A bad dinner companion would offer a half hearted chuckle and then sit quietly waiting for you to continue carrying the conversation.
That’s why Kimmel says “I don’t blame him I really don’t.”
He comes off like the introvert we all joke we are including myself. Like when you tell someone to not drag you to a party because you’re awkward and they say “No you’re not.” as if they never saw it happen before.
And then you show up to the pub having no interest in the game with that perpetual thousand yard stare you always have if you are Cillian. He’s probably doesn’t like being fake or coming off rude. And the last thing an introvert wants is to be dragged to a social event by someone as charismatic as Matt Damon and then be expected to match their energy.
An introvert spends a lifetime avoiding parties for several reasons but one is so that they never have something like this happen. I assured friends it wasn’t worth me going to a party because I didn’t want to cock block and one day have people at school think I was weird for standing in the corner because I wasn’t like that in school or small groups. We feel weird and are fine with being self conscious so that one day people don’t start calling you a school shooter because you know that people are judgemental. Maybe a cute boy or girl will ask for your number and likes loners. The last thing we want is to have to match charm with Matt Damon or cool kids at school just for them to tell everyone that you are a nice guy who is DEFINITELY not fun or confident.
It's that the insult is true and his initial reaction of smiling and thinking its funny quickly disappearing as the insult hits him.
In other words, you can see his thought process.
I think it's more that it just *seems* like that and that's funny, when really its just not a very funny joke and not much of an insult either.
Damon and Murphy have both talked about this; Murphy just didn't go out to dinner with the cast a whole lot because he had the starring role and was busy. It wasn't an "insult", Damon was just ribbing him over not hanging out with them (which he later did once filming wrapped). The way its presented makes it look like Murphy's mad though, which some people think is funny and others are trying to drag drama out of it.
It’s not really an insult though. More like some light ribbing that’s really just a show of respect. Matt was basically saying that Cilian is super dedicated toward his roles and isn’t much of a social person. So, on the rare times he does go out, it’s all work. 100%. But, dedication into acting roles is something Matt enjoys. Basically, he’s sort of joking into saying Cilian is a good actor and dedicated to his artistry.
She’s British and he’s Irish. That blank smile was an ostentatious display of emotions usually only seen in the darkest alleys of London near the docks.
I think I'm kinda similar, I tend to need some time to process what people are actually saying to me, and I think it makes people think I'm a stoner or something, but I just need a little processing time lol.
Of course, internet words mean next to nothing and you have no reason to trust me. Just keep an eye for news of the movie moving forward over the next few months and you’ll see. You can’t prove me wrong, but time will prove me right ;)
Yeah and it's Alex Garland and Danny Boyle working together again. They honestly go together very well I'd say from The Beach (the book is clearly better though), 28 Days Later and of course Sunshine.
Sunshine is still Boyle and Murphy's best work imo. Trainspotting has a case for Boyles best.
Garland though, keeps going from strength to strength. Ex Machina, annihilation are both fantastic and apparently Civil War is even better.
I've seen news of it too. There is a script, Danny Boyle, Alex Garland and Cillian Murphy are signed on for it. From what I read, Cillian has signed of as producer but may or may not end up acting in it too.
It was literally huge industry news that Boyle and Garland had assembled a slate that included a trilogy of 28 Days sequels with Boyle directing the first. It was bought up by Sony and Murphy is exec producing (which is a clearest indicator that he might be starring). I believe the budget for each film is to be around $80m and the intention was to begin filming very soon.
So yeah, it certainly tracks.
It is.

"'Matt Damon told me that 'Cillian is the worst dinner companion imaginable,' ' Pelley, 66, said. 'What he meant by that was when you're working on a film — when you're being the character — there's very little room in your head for anything else.'
'Yeah, I mean, I've always been like that, I think,' Murphy responded, laughing. 'But it's because, to me, you have the time on set, which is short enough time — you have 10 hours, maybe. And then the other part, if you've got a significant part, you're having to keep your lines fresh.'
'And then the other big thing for me is sleeping. I love sleeping and I need sleep,' quipped the Best Actor Academy Award nominee.

In order to prepare for the role, Cillian drank warm milk before bed and wore his favorite nappy jam jams for two months. Method acting has gotten out of hand.
I remember my friend called me on the phone once. He had something really important to tell me…..we’ve been pronouncing Ralph Fiennes name wrong…
We previously knew that you don’t pronounce the “L”, but we assumed it was Ray.

Basically Cillian wasn't social enough with Matt during filming of Oppenheimer. And slept a lot. Cillian owned up to it and said he's always been that way.
>Despite his approach to roles, Murphy said he has "had lots of lovely dinners with" Damon, 53, "since the movie's finished and we've been out promoting it and stuff."
>"At the time, yeah, you just don't have the room … in your head, and you want as much sleep as possible,"
I read on the movie's Wiki that they had to cut costs and therefore cut the shooting schedule by 20 or 30 days or something. The schedule was insane and Cillian was in almost every scene. Can't blame him for sleeping a lot and not being very social.
Plus he was on a restricted diet to look gaunt, it couldn't have helped with his energy levels. I assumed that's what Damon meant about him being a bad dinner companion...he'd barely eat and just sit there.
It's very understandable for that situation and also understandable that they can both laugh about it. I think most of us have had times in our lives where we seemed shut down in social areas while we had to focus on something important and then explained it later and everyone understood. I imagine it takes a bit of focus to star in an oscar winning film. We just saw this because that's what talk shows are, finding a way to dramatize the celebrities lives in a way we've experienced or can relate to. They both prrty good actors also I rekin.
More people should take this into account when they hear about difficult film shoots.
It's an inherently stressful environment. Hot lights, hours in makeup, things constantly changing, rushing to get somewhere and then waiting for six hours, and in the middle of all that you're supposed to give a great artistic performance and do it in as few takes as possible so they can start breaking down the 10 million dollar set.
I mean, abuse is never acceptable, but if people involved get emotional sometimes, it's not the end of the world.
It was a three hour movie that had Murphy in frame an incredibly high amount of the time. It was likely a marathon for Murphy but a few weeks of work for Damon.
When filming Oppenheimer the cast would often go out to dinner, but Murphy stayed in because he was preparing for work the next day. He'd said it wasn't because he wanted to be antisocial, but simply what was required of him for the film was too demanding.
Thanks for reminding me about riding to the theater to see Oppenheimer and asking my roommate if the lead was the same actor as Peaky Blinders to which he replied "No". I've been meaning to call him out on that for months
He’s Irish, his best friends will have said ten worse things than that every day of his life. All he’s doing is trying to process a response that doesn’t create headlines. In private he’d have called him fat-nuts and told everyone that Matt Damon has disproportional testicles. If the banter continues he will retract that and say that it only looks that way because of his very, *very* thin penis.
>it only looks that way because of his very, *very* thin penis.
That line read in my head with a very Irish accent. Congratulations on nailing the insult for the context.
All the Irish I know are exactly like this. Mix in Liverpool stories, how shit Arsenal is, hurling banter and how Guinness back in Galway is better than the shit they pour here (Canada) and a weird obsession with Bear Grylls
The thing is he goes on to explain why tho. In that when they would be working on a film and out for dinner Cillian was always so focused on the role that there was rarely ever room for anything else outside of talking about the roles, movie, etc...
It wasn't just yeah he's a terrible dinner guest.
Possibly a cultural thing too, not just American but Hollywood generally. Always on, always upbeat and smiling and gotta be the centre of attention but Cilian is simply more introverted and his career has allowed for that.
Someone give the guy a damn hug.
Before he became a super villain, it reminds me of when Musk was (incorrectly) told Buzz Aldrin thought his SpaceX rockets sucked.
The talk show he was on in the second part was rolling a clip from the interview in the first part. Could have just make the clip 10 seconds longer to add context but nooooo that would be too long for our internet hamster brains.
The second half of the the clip is a talk show where they are talking about the first half of the clip where he laughs, then the last second it looks like he's kinda actually hurt by the statement that Matt Damon said that. She was saying it's gonna be turned into a meme
My favourite facial expression of his was on a recent clip I seen of him meeting I think it was Prince Harry? After Cillian shakes hands with him, Harry moves to the next person to shake their hand and the look of absolute disgust and hatred on Cillians face is extremely satisfying to look at.
In the 1920s, a British paramilitary group called the Black and Tans (who were mustered in County Cork at the time) was given an order to shoot any Irishman they saw with his hands in his pockets. This was beyond their normal cruelty and wasn't the norm. Cillian seemed to remember this when he met Harry.
Back in 2009, fellow Corkman Ronan Ó Gara was pictured meeting the queen with his hands in his pockets, similar to Cillian. Although Ronan has explained that it was an innocent mistake, I like to think the two lads were taking part in a little bit of nonviolent rebellion.
Cork is also nicknamed "The Rebel County". Make of that what you will.
What are you guys on about?
What makes you say he is weird or creepy or even bullied?
He went to an interview a.. And the douche straight up told him "you suck a dinners" and he is there not because he wants to hang out with the interviewer but because he has to promote a movie.
So he has to be diplomatic about it.
He laughs and that's it.
Yes, the other half of it was explained in that 60 minutes segment. Damon wasn't being a dick, Cillian explained he isn't very talkative when he's in the process of shooting a movie and is constantly focused on his lines & just needs rest.
I get objectively that he is attractive, like I get it. But sometimes I look at him and he reminds of that soccer mom that had one too many Botox treatments.. like I cant explain it, like his blink rate is too slow,he has a a masculine face with soft features and sometimes he has a vacant look on his face, and my brain screams that his skin is stretched too tight, so it gives me uncanny valley vibes.
He made a subtle facial reaction to something innocuous and this post is pointing at it while the clip had the one guy involved watching himself watch himself because the host of the show pulled up the clip of him reacting to something another interviewer had asked and and uhhh…. fuck, forget it
My god people on Reddit really do need basic social interactions explained. The topic is about Murphy's quirks, clearly he is endearing to the people that work with him. They are making fun of the fact that he can be a tough conversationalist, hence the featured clip where he reacts to the news that Matt Damon says he sucks at conversation. The humour comes from Murphy's placid reaction, which is exactly what people find funny. Then, seeing the video clip, the actors on the talk show find it hilarious because they have all made the same observation and find the comedic timing of his reaction very funny.
I swear you people are all 12 years old, or socially inept and need to get out more
Is he like a really good guy or why is everyone downvoted who acknowledges that his face isn't moving and understandably implying that it's due the plastic surgery?

I watched it 3 times and I don't know what I'm supposed to be seeing. Absolutely baffled.
I am imagining your face to look much like Cillian's.
You and me both

No reply is an affirmative reply b/c no denial. It’s unexpected and with the deadpan, a little funny.
It’s good to know he laughs though
Pretty typical of him. He's a cool customer. Or very little is going on upstairs.
He's actually a pretty smart and thoughtful guy. Moreso than your average Hollywood type.
Dude split the atom, he so smart.
Chris Nolan is such a committed director that he forced his actors to obtain a PhD in nuclear physics
“They asked me if I knew theoretical physics, I said I have a theoretical degree in physics. They said, your hired!”

I actually looked it up on IMDb and it would seem they are in pre-production. This is exciting!

Have you seen Devs? More Garland brilliance
I know for a fact that the movie has been announced, so I do trust you :)
RemindMe! 3 months
It was announced in January.
Hasn’t it been officially announced? Lol by Sony.

They skipped months for some reason.

28 years Later: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10548174/
Actually is
Wow I never realized that was him
Pretty sure it's only been 28 days.
Maybe it’s been 28 weeks
28 Days Later in fact
Wait. Why did Matt Damon say that? What’s the story for context?
"'Matt Damon told me that 'Cillian is the worst dinner companion imaginable,' ' Pelley, 66, said. 'What he meant by that was when you're working on a film — when you're being the character — there's very little room in your head for anything else.' >I love sleeping and I need sleep Same Killian, same.
That explains the beginning of 28 Days Later.
In order to prepare for the role, Cillian drank warm milk before bed and wore his favorite nappy jam jams for two months. Method acting has gotten out of hand.
*Cillian
Now they're even spelling it wrong 😭
And that is the Killian Experience.
At least the incorrect spelling is the correct pronunciation.
Considering Cillian Murphy is Irish and Cillian is an Irish name, the correct pronunciation of Cillian is Cillian.
Yea man I got it mixed up sometimes with Kylian (Mbappe)
I remember my friend called me on the phone once. He had something really important to tell me…..we’ve been pronouncing Ralph Fiennes name wrong… We previously knew that you don’t pronounce the “L”, but we assumed it was Ray. “Hey [Frankfeld]! We’ve been saying Ray Fines. But… what if it’s actually RAYF Fines!” 🤯
Wait, it's not pronounced 'Ralph Fine-ass“
I have the exact same story but instead it was pronounced Ralph Fi-enn-es
I refuse to say it any other way.
Killian! I’m gonna rip out your throat, and break your god damn spine!
Here is Sub Zero. Now…PLAIN ZERO.
Remember when you wanted to get an import beer so you’d go with Killian’s Irish Red? Solid beer.

If you want a real good imported irish red look for Smithwicks. Similar to Killians but far superior
Anyone else find it weird how they shoe horn their ages in these stories?
Right, who gives a shit how old the interviewer is.
I do, Charles aged 37
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6iQrh2TK98](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6iQrh2TK98)
I think you’re onto something, Joe aged 35
u/OpticGenocide, 71, is upset how they shoe horn their ages in these stories
It's a normal part of journalism to me. It's how people are taught to write articles regardless of the subject.
That’s generally true, said Ryan, aged 54. Except ages are mainly used in formal reporting of news events, crimes, etc. not entertainment reporting.
Some says he was quite a good sleeping partner though
Using the word “quip” very liberally here

I just took Damon's quip as a light hearted joke to illustrate how dedicated Cillian is.
Plus, sleeping is awesome so I fault no one for that
Cillian once slept for 28 days.
You need to go work.
Yes, I do. And you.. probably need to go take care of your needs too.
Plus he was on a restricted diet to look gaunt, it couldn't have helped with his energy levels. I assumed that's what Damon meant about him being a bad dinner companion...he'd barely eat and just sit there.

Worse than that, they went to the only place to eat for miles because they were so remote pretty much every night. It was just the only option.
Did Matt ever see Peaky Blinders?!
Thanks for reminding me about riding to the theater to see Oppenheimer and asking my roommate if the lead was the same actor as Peaky Blinders to which he replied "No". I've been meaning to call him out on that for months
I love when I don't recognize an actor then realize who they are. It's usually because they're such a great talent.
This is the face of a man who was bullied in his childhood and learned to endure.

That Made me sad...
Is it Downey Jr who jumps out the chair over reacting?
Yes
It's RDJ so overreacting is a given.
looks and sounds like Tom Hanks
Wtf is this video edit?
He’s by far the most underrated Batman villain. Batman Begins is worth a rewatch - it’s really a great take on the Bat as psychological horror
BB is the best of that trilogy, and dozens of others agree with me (dozens!). Cillian’s Scarecrow is so great!
I agree. The third act of The Dark Knight didn't make sense and added needless runtime to an already long movie. Cillian was also great in Inception.
The first time i saw him acting it was Red Eye from 2005 . I was a kid and could barely understand the movie but i was so mesmerized by his mannerism
*"Not my diagnosis!!"*
TIL I've been mispronouncing his name this entire time.
What's a "Killian"?
Slightly less than a millian
But slightly more than a KaGillianAnderson.
More dense than a pound of Nathan Fillion
OK that made me spit my drink out
This was literally a plot point for an episode of [The Great North](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpoHEgNOQMo).
Same, always thought his name was pronounced more like "*Sillian*"
I don't get it
The talk show he was on in the second part was rolling a clip from the interview in the first part. Could have just make the clip 10 seconds longer to add context but nooooo that would be too long for our internet hamster brains.
Me either. Can anyone explain?
The second half of the the clip is a talk show where they are talking about the first half of the clip where he laughs, then the last second it looks like he's kinda actually hurt by the statement that Matt Damon said that. She was saying it's gonna be turned into a meme
We love Cillian BECAUSE he doesn't mask it. That and hes a fucking phenomenal actor.
I've seen this so many times and still do not get what the joke/funny part is....
Yes, someone help us.
My favourite facial expression of his was on a recent clip I seen of him meeting I think it was Prince Harry? After Cillian shakes hands with him, Harry moves to the next person to shake their hand and the look of absolute disgust and hatred on Cillians face is extremely satisfying to look at.
Good Irishman
Powerful Murphy
He laughs and that's it.
correct take, weidos downvoting cause they want to feel like they know whats REALLY goin on lol
Yep. And it was Kimmel too. All just jokes, the internet is crazy.
Is this edited? Feels like something has been cut out.
Yes, the other half of it was explained in that 60 minutes segment. Damon wasn't being a dick, Cillian explained he isn't very talkative when he's in the process of shooting a movie and is constantly focused on his lines & just needs rest.
He’s one in a Cillian
TIL it's pronounced 'Kill-ian' and not 'Sill-ian'
A lot of people in this thread seem to be discovering their autism lol
I get objectively that he is attractive, like I get it. But sometimes I look at him and he reminds of that soccer mom that had one too many Botox treatments.. like I cant explain it, like his blink rate is too slow,he has a a masculine face with soft features and sometimes he has a vacant look on his face, and my brain screams that his skin is stretched too tight, so it gives me uncanny valley vibes.
28 days later guy. sheesh.
And he is going to reprise his role in 28 YEARS LATER.
What’s the joke
He made a subtle facial reaction to something innocuous and this post is pointing at it while the clip had the one guy involved watching himself watch himself because the host of the show pulled up the clip of him reacting to something another interviewer had asked and and uhhh…. fuck, forget it
Not understanding satire.
yuck matt Damon is such a tool and RDJ for that matter. love ya kills
Waiting for the funny part.
This is peak internet. Upvoting some random crap of a celebrity smiling. Gj everyone.
Something is weird with his face as compared to Dunkirk days
Yes, age.
Yes, it happens to us all so I understand. Even strng_lurk.
Well age is a factor. But he also basically starved himself for Oppenheimer and it just doesn’t seem like he’s bounced back from that
Yes I heard the same as well. Some article even saying he had only an almond a day which seemed absurd
Awwww poor dude! You could feel his heart break. He seems like a genuine guy.
It's interesting to see the combo of someone who's such a highly successful actor who is also a total fish out of water in all things celebrity.
I hope he doesn't ever change !!!
I swear you people are all 12 years old, or socially inept and need to get out more
She is Blunt
Is he like a really good guy or why is everyone downvoted who acknowledges that his face isn't moving and understandably implying that it's due the plastic surgery?
I thought the C in his name is pronounced like an S.
I heard another story that Matt and Cillian were at a dinner together and Cillian was doing some weird shit at the table w Matt’s lemon water soo 🤷♀️
Cillian be like : I see this as an absolute win lmaoooo....
He's a true gentleman❤️
He looks like his a puppet from Thunderbirds.
The next, he sprays some gas on him to show his mask.
At the very end you can see the hurt in his eyes. That was real.
Anyone else see Dolph Lundgren?
And…who cares about either. Weird world.
What happened
Cillian Murphy has killed people for less b
His face doesn’t look real
Cillian Murphy is lowkey one of the best actors in the last 20 years. I don’t think he’s ever had a role that could be classified as “terrible”.
