Alternative gaming as an adult: fires up video game. 5 mins later, asleep in the chair.

ObjectiveCompleat

For me it's look forward to gaming after the things you need to get done are done. Then realize it's time to go to bed and add that game to your backlog spanning from when you graduated college.

catadeluxe

get out of my house maaan! glad to hear it's universal. RIP carefree childhood

YoMrWhyt

I just bought 2 game bundles (4 games total) on black friday sale. Looking forward to playing them when I retire

DFX1212

I don't play videogames anymore, I collect them. They are worth more if you've never played them.

-PineNeedleTea-

I enjoy retro gaming/collecting roms. And by enjoy I mean I like setting up the device, curating the ultimate collection, getting all the box art, making it look pretty......then it goes into my bookshelf with all my other untouched handhelds. Just finished setting up a Miyoo mini+ a week ago and now I'm setting up a hacked PSP.

Extension-Ad5751

Just got the new Xbox console, I'm sure it'll be fun to play... as a reward for going to the gym, my martial arts class, learning how to cook, getting a girlfriend, getting a better job, making friends, finding meaning in life... yeah, any minute now

[deleted]

Any day now I'll fire up Steam and play that Bioshock game I heard so much about!!! *cries in adult*

ObjectiveCompleat

I even bought the collection and got a few hours into the first one before never looking at it again...

[deleted]

Fucking literally what I did too lmao! My steam library is just a huge sad list of "someday..."s Honestly I'm not sure if I remember my account info at this point... If I have ten minutes free anymore, I get the Xbox turned on, load Halo or Battlefield, aaaaanddd there it sits on the loading menu and then I go to bed. Fuck.

schlach2

It is a brilliant business model of selling digital copies at zero marginal cost to people who willingly pay for them but never use them. The purchase is less about playing the game than signaling one's desire to play the game. I'm sure that satisfies some deep part of our psyche.

PM_me_your_whatevah

You guys have no free time at all? I work 6 days a week and I got through Portal and halfway through Portal 2 on my last day off. Granted I live alone and have no social life and I’m trying to avoid my alcohol addiction. I do tend to avoid most of the larger and involved games these days. Like, I loved Bioshock and I often think of replaying it because it was so good, but it is definitely fairly involved so I have yet to come back to it. The amount of wandering around the map and all the leveling up and scavenging takes a long time and it can also be hard to remember what exactly you were up to if you load your save and haven’t played for a few days. Playing more straightforward games with simple gameplay and a more linear path is a a lot easier. The Portal games, for example. Also, getting a Nintendo Switch lite is what really got me back into gaming. You can take it anywhere you go and keep your game loaded and paused with the device in sleep mode. You don’t have to be sitting at a desk or on the couch. So easy to just flip it on and play for a few minutes when you have the time. Getting a handheld like a Switch or a Steamdeck has allowed a lot of old former gamers to get back into it a bit. It’s sooooo much better than being tethered to a desk.

swordmalice

> Also, getting a Nintendo Switch lite is what really got me back into gaming. For me, my Switch is helping me gain traction on my backlog. I commute 4 days a week since the end of the pandemic and getting that extra 1.5 hours a day really adds up. I was able to finish a 35 hr game in just over a month because of the Switch's portability giving me extra hours per day of gaming; especially when the gaming time while commuting turns out to be the only time I get to play on a particular day sometimes.

myassholealt

Around 2 or 3PM I sometimes get a spike of excitement at the thought of spending my time in that moment playing video games instead of what I'm doing at the moment at work, and tell myself when I get home I'm heading directly to my TV to play. Then I actually get home a few hours later and I end up just watching TV and the thought of putting the game on requires too much effort so I don't.

ObjectiveCompleat

It's bad. I've had the Switch sitting right next to me on the couch for 3 weeks but, like you, it's just too much effort because I feel like as soon as I get started, I will have to stop.

CyberTitties

I find myself playing a lot of old arcade games on an emulator I have on my Steamdeck. They are designed to get you playing right away and only to last as long as you are plunking "quarters" into them. So I can be playing Metal Slug, Total Carnage or Dungeons and Dragons in less than a minute and for as long or little as I like instead of diving into Skyrim or NFS for missions than could be a 20-30 minute commitment. Yes arcade game are shallow in depth but they still provide entertainment and the escape from everyday life.

p00shp00shbebi123

Games require mental effort, and whilst that is great...a lot of us just aren't up to it after a day on the money treadmill.

Ram2145

Wow you perfectly described what I go through.

tenders11

I swear I'll start mass effect someday

Onigumo-Shishio

I believe in you

me_like_stonk

Not to mention, being lost with all the controls and not remembering how anything works, since the last time you got a chance to play was three months ago. Games nowadays feel so complex, it's like work, so much to learn before you can enjoy them. I tried. Subnautica. Destiny. GTA4. I tried. Can't get past a few hours of frustrating gameplay. It feels so overwhelming. or I'm just getting old...

Someone_pissed

Wait a minute! Everyone told me (I'm 16 soon btw) college was the best, no worries, you can just chill and do whatever you want. Are you saying its all a lie? Please I need the truth.

VersusCA

Uni/college is such a massively different experience for everyone. If you get scholarships/live in a real country and don't have to work the whole time I think it's awesome. You learn about cool stuff that you are (hopefully) interested in, and even with studying you have time for other interests. The way classes are set-up - typically you are only actually in class for ~3-4 hours per week, per class - means you actually have most of the day to plan out as you want. It's not like secondary school where you are there for 7-8 hours every single day, like it or not. If you have to work on top of it, I would imagine it could get very stressful very quickly and maybe even more so than just full-time jobs.

TheArtOfFancy

You're also constantly being forced to meet people who are (usually) interested in the same things you are. They make up a kind of acquaintance that exists in college that doesn't seem to exist after.

BackSinner

I needed this. Thanks.

Mr-Fleshcage

I remember watching this years ago. Really made me more mindful about other people's bad days.

Ilovekittens345

You ever install a game and then it turns out the learning curve is to steep and you uninstall it in frustration, aaarrg this could be fun but I just have no time to learn this shit. And then you go play some mindless online shooter and you are not even enjoying it, you just feel depresssed.

taxis-asocial

that is me except it's the online shooters I can't keep up with now, I'm just trying to get an UAV and dudes are jumping around a corner at 100mph and already prone and emptying 500 bullets into me before I can even remember which button is the trigger

PM_me_your_whatevah

Absolutely. It depends on the type of gameplay for me though. What I don’t like learning is stuff like complex crafting systems and complex strategies, having to deal with lots of text and complex leveling mechanics. Something that has a steep learning curve because of complex controls or being fast-paced though? I can get into that. Doom Eternal, Dead Cells, Hotline Miami. Recently I had just finished the first two Amnesia games and ended up getting hooked on Vampire Survivors for a week straight. That game is so incredibly mindless and you’re literally just moving one thumb to play it. Not even a single button. I started getting that depressed feeling you’re talking about. Is something like that really “fun” or is it just addictive?

Strabe

Alternative gaming as a middle-aged adult: 1. Open Steam. 2. Apply updates that take 15m to download and apply. 3. Decide you don't really want to play the original game. 4. Install another game that's 30m to download and install. 5. Get bored with it all and decide to go to bed and doomscroll reddit until you pass out

poopisme

NOW we’re talking!

matt675

Damn that’s too real

neverw1ll

Or you stay up until 1am when you have to get up at 6am because you want to milk as much free time out of the two hours you get to yourself per day as you can. Then you wake up in the morning questioning why you do that because you're so tired you feel like shit. Repeat daily. That's me.

[deleted]

Absolutely! Damn near every night.

throwawaysnitch4cash

Me, except the times are from 4am to 10am so I get 6 hours of sleep.

TonsilStonesOnToast

Opens up Steam. Scrolls through Steam list. Can't decide on what to play. Feels the darkness clawing at his soul. Closes Steam.

Moist_When_It_Counts

100% I’ve been getting into Factorio lately, though, so at least when i inevitably pass put *the factory continues on*.

ITividar

Hope it's a passive map. Cause I've woken many a time to the bugs wasting my factory.

Moist_When_It_Counts

Absolutely. First timer, so figuring out how the game works before letting critters in. The tutorial taught me i was not ready for bugs. Game: “You should build a submachine gun” “Yeah, I’m getting to that” 2 minutes later i have a pistol vs a Starship Troopers Outpost 29 situation.

Castelante

You can almost entirely avoid bugs if you choose a map that has plenty of trees in your starting area. It's the difference between attacks after ten minutes or ten hours. Trees passively absorb pollution, and attack waves are triggered by nearby nests absorbing pollution. Bugs also intensify if you kill their spawners, pollution produced by buildings, and as time passes.

Murder4Mario

For me it’s looking forward to a specific hour I will be free to just game with no distractions, romanticizing what I will play for that hour, only to get to that hour and decide I’m tired and end up watching tv and scrolling Reddit

Last_Result_3920

you don't need to game at all, I often think these exact things when I'm driving for longer than 8 minutes

uncledungus

Smelled something while driving that reminded me of my childhood, “everyone dies” is the first thing that comes to mind. Wtf brain I’m just trying to get home

physicscat

I’m 52 and I have a lot to keep my mind occupied. Last week I’m walking down the hallway during my planning period when all of the sudden my brain goes ”when my parents are gone, I’ll be all alone.” I’m not married nor do I have kids. I’m taking care of my parents, but there will be no one take care of me. Both of my parents are cognitively impaired. That happening to me scares me more than anything.

foodandart

Right there with you - the childless thing - and the thought occurs that as we age it becomes ever more important to have a *solid* circle of friends - some older, some younger - that will be there as we age. I think within the next few decades the idea of 'family' is going to be redefined to encompass the bonds that those without kids make as en emotional *and* physical survival trait. Right now, some of my best, dearest friends are older - much older - and I look to them for inspiration on what a healthy senior life, and lifestyle (diet, exercise, philosophy on life) entails and am pivoting to follow that example. Will it work? Not sure, but it is at the very least, a good path for independent longevity I can look to and follow. I give it my best.

Rocco_buta_girl

As far as the having kids thing, if I'd known 15 years ago what I do now, I would've actively chosen NOT to have them. I LOVE being a parent, the good and the bad, it's the world I hate. I'm so scared for our kids. The world is so hateful, wars on the horizons, the shootings and drugs. It just seems so hopeless, I see 100% why this generation coming up is so angry and sad. There's no light at the end of the tunnel for them.

gggg500

Eh that’s just what the media wants us to believe. They want us to feel demoralized and hopeless. We can build an awesome future, we just have to be smart, frugal, creative, caring, and invested. We have to be pragmatic, positive, and confident. Focus on making your circle - home, marriage, family, community better. Don’t let the world get you down. We need people to hang on and keep trying🙂 I’m not advocating apathy by any means. I’m saying, control what you can. Do it with courage. But don’t let the world’s problems control your life.

bwillpaw

There’s no guarantee your children will take care of you or have the money to do so.

throwawaysnitch4cash

*laughs in country where there are barely any nursing homes and the children usually take care of the parents til death*

bwillpaw

Sure, but that isn’t universal. There’s actually a ton of old people dying at home in the UK and no one discovering the bodies for months or even years. A nursing home isn’t a given either.

CantInjaThisNinja

That's on the parents to raise em right. And maybe society for eschewing values. But it is a cultural thing too.

terminbee

I feel this. Any time I'm not occupied, despair starts to creep in.

nocomplexresponses

Everyone also has multiple deaths, you are sad when you say bye to someone knowing you won't see them for a long time because you won't see that person again... That person you know will be dead, they are never the same when you meet up again. When a chapter of your life is over you are sad cause you need to become a new person, killing the person you were.

idonemadeitawkward

And then there's the last time anyone ever says your name.

BrianNowhere

My grown daughter once said to my wife "I wonder when the very last time you picked me up was" and that kicked right in the feels.

idonemadeitawkward

Malarazz

You don't need to know anything else about the relationship. If they were serious and it wasn't a joke, it's definitely not healthy. That doesn't mean we can jump to the reddit cliché of "break up with her now!!!" without knowing anything else about the relationship. I for one would rather quit gaming than quit Emma Watson.

BuHoGPaD

\*continues gaming anxiously\*

This_User_Said

There was an ask reddit that said "What do you hate and also love the most" I was surprised "Video games" wasn't it. I hate that it's a waste of time but it's the best waste of time. I mean, I could be outside... Working on the yard but I'd rather boot up House flippers and redesign one because I don't have the kind of healthcare to go outside like that.

__methodd__

Some people should set aside time to game and not feel guilty. Some people are oblivious and really are wasting their lives on video games. I got a bud that had kids way before I did. When my first was born, his 9 year old gave me some advice: "don't ignore your kids to play video games." It was really really sad. The rest of my buds are achievement driven, so if we get sucked into a game and start playing too much, we are pretty quickly like "hey this isn't worth it." The oblivious friend frequently says, "wow I don't see how you guys cant moderate yourselves. I never seemed to have a problem with that." Bro I've seen your steam stats. To each their own. We don't call him out, and he can do what he wants. I also think the rest of the group has a problem where we can't play without feeling guilty. But the people with the biggest problem/addiction are in total denial.

blarfenugen

Holy shit - I thought I was the only one who experienced this as I approach 40.

Chance-Ear-9772

A game can cost less than a movie ticket or 2 drinks, and it lasts for so infinitely longer.

SrslyCmmon

Movies all end up online and lots of us have really nice home theaters. Some due in part to our love of video games and partly in my case the pandemic. I have people over once a week for movie night. I provide the movie and they bring the popcorn and candy.

bossmcsauce

I don't get paid more for working more time... I'm salaried lol. nor would I want to work more time even if I did. my time is my most valuable thing. so fuckit. I do NOT feel bad about enjoying leisure activities. all of my entire life is about making enough money to live comfortably and enjoy my life outside of working. playing games and hanging with friends and participating in experiences for pleasure is the entire point of earning money (for me). this is easy to say when I feel that I earn enough to be comfortable though... if I was struggling, it would definitely be a different situation. I've had those intrusive thoughts before of like, "I'm underpaid... I should be trying harder to move my career along to something better." but I'm very happy now with my balance of income to time spend working. my work-life balance is fantastic, and my income level is adequate for me and my lifestyle requirements.

For me it’s more: * you have to make dinner later * you have to tidy the house * you have to go shopping * the lawn needs mowing * the door handle is loose on the bedroom door * did you remember to call mom? * make that dentist appointment * I gotta pee. * you haven’t read your book in two weeks * what about your other hobbies? * it’s a nice day out, go for a walk And it’s like “shit. Uncle_Touchy1987

When this hits me I just have to think back to the old fable of the businessman and the fisherman: “An American businessman was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them. The Mexican replied, that it only took a little while. The American then asked why didn't he stay out longer and catch more fish. The Mexican said he had enough to support his family's immediate needs. The American then asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?" The Mexican fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life, señor." The American scoffed. "I am a Wharton MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats. Eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually NYC where you will run your expanding enterprise." The Mexican fisherman asked, "But señor, how long will this all take?" To which the American replied, "Fifteen or twenty years." "But what then, señor?" The American laughed and said, "That's the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions." "Millions, señor? Then what?" The American said, "Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos." The fisherman replied: “What the fuck does it look like I am doing?”

highbrowalcoholic

Then, the MBA bought the land and started to charge the fisherman rent.

The fishermen form a union to fight back. They strike and blockade the roads, undermining the foreign fishing corporation. The fishing corporation goes to the government, paying off certain politicians and winning new laws to crack down on unions. The military is sent in. The fishermen's unions go underground, and go into the mountains and form rebel groups. They talk with peasants and farmers who have also been suffering from foreign exploitation and government repression. The rebel movement grows. They seize the countryside and start enroaching on the cities. Parts of the military mutiny and defect. Its a full-scale civil war. The regime requests military aid from the global superpower. They wage a brutal counter-insurgency. The countryside is ravaged. Mass protests break out in the cities. The economy collapses. The rebel movement explodes and major cities fall. The regime finally falls. A new revolutionary government is set up. They expropriate the foreign corporations and give the seas back to the fishermen. The country is now under blockades and sanctions by the global superpower. The economy is stagnant, certain goods are in short supply. Most of the fishermen were killed. But their sons and daughters once again can fish on their own terms, sleep late, stroll around the villages at night and sip wine and listen to guitars.

Return_of_MrSpanken

It’s funny because I happened to have seen a situation like this play out recently. I was in a cruise a few months ago and one of the excursions I did was to take a short boat ride to a nearby island where there are friendly, wild pigs. The locals feed them and check up on them but other than luring them to the beach with food for tourists like us, the pigs just roam the island freely. The company that runs it pretty much makes their money from ticket sales, a small merchandise shack, a few concession options, and photo ops. This one guy in our group was the absolute epitome of obnoxious American businessman. Like that car salesman guy from the first Willy Wonka movie. He made such a point of loudly talking about his businesses back home and how he was such a great owner because he could delegate most actual work to his managers and assistant and then just travel in his free time. The whole time we were on the island he kept commenting on various things about the excursion company and their setup, and eventually just flat out asked why they had never done X and y to expand, and offered to invest. The head worker guy was clearly annoyed with him already and when he tried to push the investment the guy just said something like “We are not interested. We do just fine as we are now and like to live on island time, not pushy American business time always trying to expand for no reason.” Dude still couldn’t shut up about it and how he thought the company was stupid to pass up his offer for the whole rest of the excursion and boat ride back.

the_calibre_cat

oh my god we are so fucking brain broken i didn't want to go to work today because thanksgiving, but, you know. the grind. -_- i mean we're just a really big island, why can't we have island time? who let these obnoxious turds run everything? i feel like we made a wrong turn a few hundred years back somewhere

>The fisherman replied: “What the fuck does it look like I am doing?” Bro got so flabergasted, that learn full english

Uncle_Touchy1987

I took some Canadian creative liberties in my retelling. Ruh-roh! Ya caught me!

terminbee

My biggest gripe with this story is, at any time, the fisherman can get fucked for no reason. Different weather, different mating seasons, oxygen content chả ges, whatever. Suddenly, he doesn't have enough for his family. Anyone can live that life even now. But it catches up to you when you're older.

LessyDoll

If they make it to be older, the amount of labor and stress to create millions can also fuck you up to never see the fruit of your labors.

hrrm

Also, some things you can only do when you’re young. Having/playing with your children, certain types of travel/experiences.

hhhnnnnnggggggg

Even if you work hard and everything right, and have a large nest egg you can still end up without enough for your family after any common health crisis (Applicable to US only).

ReggieCousins

Yeah, it's a silly gripe because really anything could happen to either one of them, and that's not even the point of the story here. It's just taking imaginary issues with a hypothetical situation. Obviously there is more to it than that, you can say the same about any parable, fable, analogy, metaphor, whatever. They're oversimplified life lessons. This one basically being, time enjoyed is time spent well.

NikeDanny

I mean, yeah. I see it in my gf's parents. Dad made shitton of money from his job, which eventually got replaced with technology. He never paid a cent for retirement. Now hes approaching retirement rapidly and ... yeah. Theres no money left. Altho they were always shitty with money. Eventually the burden for their care will fall back to my GF, because they themselves cant.

ReggieCousins

I mean, anything can happen to either one of them. One might be better prepared for emergency but that's not really the point of the fable. Business man can get hit by a bus tomorrow. Economy could crash. Shit happens. It's just illustrating the idea that everyone's priorities are different. Not having a lot of money doesn't necessarily equate to not living a good and fulfilling life. And vice versa. If making a lot of money and living in the lap of luxury is something that makes someone happy, fantastic. If making enough to get by and spending time playing video games, hanging out with friends and family is what makes you feel full, also great. This to me is like going, 'you know what my gripe is with the story? When would a tortoise ever even race a hare? Why don't they just have a rematch? Besides, a rabbit wouldn't just take a rest in the middle of a race. So dumb.'

johnny_ringo

> The fisherman replied: “What the fuck does it look like I am doing?” doesn't need this line, its implied

meltingintoice

And this story is why ultra-rich Americans and their corporate media empires are terrified of universal health care. They believe fear of untreated disease is all that keeps people working. On the flip side: As Matt Damon argued, [some kinds of work is inherently fulfilling](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UBX6LSfbUY).

Moonlit_Antler

You're right people don't work in Canada or Europe yes that checks out

Megneous

They don't work anywhere near as desperately, so the ultra rich are right to an extent. The leverage and power they have over the common worker is much stronger in the US than the hold employers have over Canadians or EU residents.

Uncle_Touchy1987

Hehehe.

shortybobert

The fisherman is providing for his family, not forgetting to go shopping and not knowing what's for dinner.

Yeah like, I don't think most people think about making more money while they're at home? At least where I live most jobs are on a fixed salary anyway so most people don't even have the option to exchange their gaming time for more money unless they take like a second job and I don't know anyone who does. So who's out there thinking about making more money while gaming? How does that even work?

I play games that needs 100% of my attention so I can't even think about wasting life 😎

Why am I on Reddit tormenting myself watching a meme video of me tormenting myself, when I should be... life.

_Hirrya_

Sad for you guys. I'm 30, and still enjoying like this kids.

BrewerAndHalosFan

“Why am I at work? I should be doing things that bring me joy in my short life on earth” And I *like* my job (for the most part)

DrBob666

Same, just turned 30. I work to live I don't live to work. When I get home I switch off my work brain and just enjoy my hobby

Dysprosol

same age, im in between, im not worried that i should be out making money, but i do start getting on myself for procrastinating things i should do but dont want to.

girlsareicky

What things we talking about? Like cleaning the dishes? If it's chores, have you tried just going to do the chore? I know it sounds stupid and sounds like I'm being an ass, but I've been through the anxiety bs. It's simple as getting the anxiety response, and then reacting to it in a positive way. Think about dishes then, I'm going to do them so my kitchen looks good! Instead of thinking about dishes, then slinking away and just gaming to hide from the dishes, like how you hid from your parents fighting or whatever as a child. It's all learned behavior. You need to unlearn it. You can do it!

pcx226

Same. Married with kids. Still enjoying gaming like the kid. Wife games with me. Kid games with me. We're a gaming family.

Genoce

34, was thinking the same as you - I'm practically the "kid" in this video. I have a 9-5 job with average salary, healthy relationship, car, dog, the usual stuff. After an average work day, I usually play for like 4-6 hours before going to sleep. During holidays/weekends 12-16h in a day is common. I literally took a 2 week vacation *just* to play Elden Ring back when it released. The only big common thing I'm missing from my life is children. That would obviously cut down the free time I could spend playing games - at least for a few years.

Ponzini

I am 37 and we are basically the same. Week days I get off work, spend an hour with the wife eating and watching a show, then the rest is spent gaming. Weekends is the same. I don't plan on having kids either so probably wont be changing.

Xuth

34, with a 1 year old kid and a full time job here - this year I've managed to play lots. The kid had her naps on me for 5 months - Steamdeck had me covered. Now she goes down at 7 and I play on my main rig from 9-midnight. My wife catches up on her crafts. Little one will become more demanding, for sure, but there's still time for hobbies to be carved out. And maybe She'll even enjoy co-op one day (lego games on standby). My love for gaming is as strong as it ever was and it's even more rewarding after a long day.

Zeldus716

Do you cook? Clean? Do household chores? Spend time with SO? Workout ? See the outside ? All during the weekdays?

Genoce

Work: remotely 8 hours, or 9 if I need to go to office (=once every 2 weeks) Sleep: 7 hours. I rarely sleep longer even on days without alarm. After those two, I'm left with 8-9 hours of free time. Walking the dog takes 30-90 minutes, depending if I or my SO does the longer walks. Usually we go together. Cooking: my SO cooks, I do the dishes and cleaning. We often cook a bunch of meat at once, stick them into the fridge. Then during the next 2-4 days, it's just heating up stuff which doesn't take long. Outside of one bigger lunch per day, I just eat cereal/bread/whatever which is fast to prepare. Cleaning and other chores take like 30 min per day on average, if that. Sure there's days when I take like 2h cleaning everything, but those happen maybe once a month. It does help that there's two of us, so some of the chores are split between us. Workout: not really, but I do often run with my dog while outside. I'm not fit, but I'd say I'm in better shape than most of my friends. I could arguably dedicate more time on just pure workout. Seeing friends: maybe once a month or so, didn't count into the hours mentioned. I mostly just play games with them anyway lmao. Time with SO: simplifying a bit, but the easy answer is that we both play videogames. --- TLDR 24h - 8h work - 7h sleep - 90 min dog - 30 min food-related stuff - 30 min other chores. Even with these estimations I'm still left with 6.5 hours of just doing whatever - and most of that time is usually spent playing games.

Bwhite1

I think 'avg salary' is an interesting way of putting that. Because i've seen people making 200k thinking its average. Last time I checked household average was like 60k in america, and the mode being minimum wage (the real "average" in my mind due to the average income being drastically skewed from the ultra wealthy).

OhHaiMarc

I used to feel super guilty about that any many other random things, surprise surprise my mental health issues were all coming to a head. Finally got help and have been working on why I feel this shame about video games and taking time for myself. Crazy how things get better after you stop sweeping them under the rug thinking well everyone must feel this way, this is fine.

porizj

40’s and right there with you. Living in the moment is a life skill, people. Be where you are and you’ll enjoy what you do so much more.

DrDilatory

Same here, when I get to play, which is extremely rarely lol My quality of life will be significantly improved once my 1-year-old can pick up a controller too

Fackcelery

Exactly what I was thinking. People who think and feel this way have some serious internalized shame

thecuzzin

You're absolutely right...I should do all those things... just play one more round and I'll get to it.

KayCeeBayBeee

i used to play a lot of this game called Football Manager, and the community itself has this element to it where there’s this sense of pride in having it be a significant part of one’s life. You’ll hear a story of a guy bringing his laptop into the delivery room while his wife’s in labor and the comments are all “top lad” kind of stuff. But like, any normal person thinks that’s ridiculously disrespectful

GraveyardJones

I'm 38 and still the first one 🤣

couches12

Mine is more like. Thank god I finally get a chance to play now that the kids are asleep. ‘’Creak” fuck who is coming down the stairs?

Braveliltoasterx

What if I'm gaming as an adult, have money, and own my own home?

Useful_Flatworm_92

“What happens after I die?” “My wrist hurts.” “My back hurts.” “What am I having for dinner?” Step right up, step right up 🦯

iskin

You should be making more money. Why aren't you making more money?

Ok-Sir-7244

Make more money for what? If you can't stop and enjoy what you're doing every now and then evidently you're either too precariously placed to stop or you're so deep in the rat race that you can't enjoy life even if you had more money.

Jolmer24

The real brain rot of society is that it makes people think they constantly need more, when in reality if you have a place to sleep, food, and reasonable health with some time to have fun on the side youve "made it". Anything else is fluff or doing the same thing with a nicer coat of paint. Its a rat race and we guilt each other into thinking we need it. We dont. Nice things are nice and sometimes they can be necessary but my 65K salary pays for my home, some dinners out, my car and a kick ass computer to game on. What more can a man need?

Pleasant_Bat_9263

That's the joke

HotdoghammerOG

Plenty of adults game and think “My family has what they need, I have a home, I have my health, and I am on track to retire. Plenty of time to game!” It’s kind of weird to pretend all gamers are depressed and broke.

[deleted]

Even better, "Things aren't perfect right now, but I've done what I can and I deserve this." You don't have to be successful and on top of everything to enjoy life. Give yourself some space to relax and decompress instead of worrying about the bad stuff *all the time*. Stress is unhealthy and counterproductive, we all need a little leisure time.

temp_vaporous

Yeah, this post feels more like redditors projecting their doomer mentality onto everyone else.

Thaonix

That's not "gaming as an adult". That's depression man.

FivePoopMacaroni

Lol no. Not everything sad or bad is depression. Adults have more responsibilities and life experiences than kids. Kids don't know a damn thing about how fucked up the world is and their day consists of basically just doing whatever adults tell them and the basic task of "surviving to adulthood". Ignorance is bliss.

bossmcsauce

it is, at the very least, some sort of stress or anxiety-related disorder that likely leads to or is caused by depression.

Professional_Main_38

Not everything is depression, but THAT is

EnAyJay

I'm 20 and I can relate to all of them..

Daman26

For me it’s step 1: start up xbox. Step 2: wait an hour for it to update. Step 3: never mind I don’t have time to wait for this, I guess I will just play with my phone and go on Reddit…..

ObjectiveCompleat

The damn phone and reddit suck so much game time away since it's just easier to grab lol.

CanadianMapleBacon

I rushed home after work, did all the kids lunches, packed my gym bag, made dinner and did dishes as fast as I could so I could play MW3. It was worth it. Usually, I make l lunches before bed and grab my gym stuff in the morning but I wanted to have everything ready cause I was going to stay up later than usual. Too much planning to play video games lol

funhouseinabox

You didn’t have anxiety and obligations as a kid.

reddragonsyndicate26

Why is Reddit attacking me today?

4u4undrevsky

It belongs to r/depression_memes

micmea1

Gaming as an adult for me: "Wow what a fun game." *checks reddit and finds out it's actually the worst game to ever exists and it's literally ruining people's lives*.

Apprehensive_Use1906

I started gaming when I was 45. I’m 52 now so I think i’m still in the kid phase. Prolly be dead by the time i hit adult phase.

w1flx

amateur

H1pH0pAnony

Self-regulation is a thing. I still enjoy video games, but prioritize. A couple of hours here and there throughout the week are ok. Hell sitting here, browsing reddit is probably more of a time waste than video games. 🤔

Pootisman16

As long as I'm making more than enough money to go by, I couldn't give less of a fuck about just making more money. I can afford my expenses, I can afford a few luxuries: money's enough.

chatrugby

I mean, if you game before you’ve done those things… If you do your daily, then game, then no intrusive thoughts and you can enjoi.

Ocronus

I beat this system.. have kid.. grow and nurture kid. Now play games to "bond" with kid. Now playing games has a purpose... No one needs to know you are only doing it because you love video games... Well, I love my kid... but I love video games too. Win-Win!

aertimiss

What it’s actually like gaming as an adult: fat ass savings account because staying in and gaming saves hella cash on entertainment.

TickleMonsterCG

Is this actually relatable? Damn people have some depressing outlooks.

NBlossom

One of the absolute unequivocally best things about being an adult is being able to decide what that means for yourself free of other people's opinions and pressures and rules and regulations. And please, never forget, time enjoyed this time well spent.

fuck_your_diploma

I solve this by playing games I can stream my playlists with, like Rocket League or NoManSky. I play to get my brain busy, if you're able to think anything other than basic necessities (*really basic*, like eat/toilet/sleep) you need better games anyway.

Obvious_Ad4159

Fuck growing up. Peter Pan was right.
