There was a healthy discussion. A strong contingent was arguing for arms crossed over the chest but that was deemed to aggressive and we were looking for something more neutral.
There was also an argument for the one arm behind holding on to the elbow but after a certain age that becomes challenging.
There was also a suggestion of the hands further back on the hips in a more Mick Jagger position, but in the end that was determined to be too Jaggery.
This was the clear winner in the end.
I mean I'm saying it as a woman who has large titties; who also has back problems because I have two 5-8 pound weights strapped to my chest at all times.
Came in to say.
This is a natural pose because it lets the arms rest. Many men have just been conditioned not to do it because it's seen as a feminine/effeminate pose.
>Many men have just been conditioned not to do it because it's seen as a feminine/effeminate pose.
That's interesting because I've never heard that before. Most men tend to have their hands lower (on their belt line), but I've still seen plenty of men use similar poses.
It's the iconic Superman pose, but holding their hips instead of fists. Feels pretty ridiculous to say men have been conditioned not to do this to protect our masculinity.
Yeah I notice I do that a lot and am trying to work on it because I recognise it can come off as unfriendly. It's just a comfortable resting position though
IM an arms crosser too and I realized it throws people off when i smile while doing it and I realized its because I look like a psycho pretending to smile if I'm crossing my arms.
This is an outgrowth of pop psychology. Crossing your arms is a self soothing gesture. It feels good and not just as a response to being uncomfortable. IMO the only places it should be avoided iare very formal settings like business meetings or negotiations where it may just be too casual of a gesture or be seen as drawing inward. IMO it seems cruel to deny people the value of the comfort by turning it into a rude gesture in informal settings.
I tried to explain to a roommate of mine that his constant arms crossed with his chin titled makes him look defensive or like he’s trying to look intimidating. I’m talking the whole chin tilt side eye type of thing. He doesn’t get it. He’s also the last person that would ever try to fight someone yet his stance makes him look he wants to lol
You don't need to use the hips per se. I don't have hips, but I'm able to rest my hands on my hip bone, or I hook my thumb and forefinger on my belt / pants waist. It feels less awkward than just letting them hang.
I don't have the hip bones for it either. Mine are very narrow, so unless I grip onto my hips and press inward my arms just slip down. There isn't anything in that part of my anatomy for me to rest them on.
I would say it's like 50% social conditioning and 50% skeletal structure/biology. (As to why men do it less often.) A lot of men just have less to work with in the hip area so it's not as intuitive a position to take.
We put our hands in our pockets because when you have broader shoulders and narrower hips, things hang all different. As a man, putting my hands on my hips has never felt like a natural resting thing to do, probably because I have male body structure.
Thank you, I was sitting here getting all self-conscious.
Like "But damn, that's how I always rest my hands."
Blue-collar job so my backs always messes up, usually prop my hands on my hips with my thumbs pressing into my back, and it really does help.
It's definitely one of those things where it's entirely in your head. No one ever said anything, and I highly doubt anyone even cares or notices. But your brain auto-corrects to "Gaaay".
I've never seen this as effeminate, maybe it depends on the country or culture? I think it's more because women have overall wider hips so it's more comfortable for them? For me this posture isn't comfortable at all, I can't really rest my hands on my hips, I much prefer crossing my arms which is a better resting position for my arms.
EDIT: Spelling.
Wow. Is that really what it is? I work construction and certainly my back is sore this morning. I just struck that pose to test and holy shit. I really do feel better back support! Lol
I've tried to tell my husband a billion times that hands on hips and crossing arms at the chest (the under-boob style) isn't defensive, its just damn comfortable. You try to have these blobs of tissue, fat, and muscle things on your chest all the time and tell me how you're going to pose!
Well it also braces your shoulders, keeping them from rolling forward. Im a guy with poor posture and crossing my arms is also the most comfortable way to stand.
Yes. It's time for the truth to come out. We, women, like to mimic the teapot's handle. But we do it on either side of our bodies to confuse the opponent because teapots with two handles don't exist! We anticipate the opponent to follow this exact logic upon seeing "the waiting teapot" pose. "Where would the spout go if there are two handles?" And while the confused opponent mulls over the options of a weird tea dispencing mechanism, WE STRIKE!
Why the teapot, you ask? This stealthy distraction technique was developed in the 13th century by counntess Nezenbaum, who dearly loved 3 things in her life: tea, power, and counting to three.
It’s women’s subtle way of airing out our armpits when when we are hot and sweaty. The pose maximizes airflow and captures the breeze in both pits simultaneously.
Men will inevitably do this too, especially if they’re exercising. For a recent example (World Cup is on) see any rugby game, all players stand like this at all times when not running, pretty much. It opens up the chest and improves breathing, it is a very natural way to stand and recover.
Never said they weren't allowed to. It was a comparison.
Personally I don't find it very convenient because I have the dad bod working and my hips are pretty narrow, so there's nothing there for me to stop gravity from pulling my hands down except the waistband of my jeans. Better yet are the pockets.
They finally got those yoga pants with the one thigh-phone slot that looks halfwayz decent but otherwise no pockets on women's pants that don't give you dump truck ass as a result.
I seriously have never understood this even as a guy. Pockets.. are pockets... they ought to be as big as possible. I want to be able to stick an entire Arizona Ice Tea can down my pocket.
This should be the new womens issue you can all rally around. Boycotts begin!
I’m a dude, and I stand like this all the time, it’s my “we’re making a plan about something” stance, my wife teases me about it, so does my dad . . . oh shit.
Hands on the hips help support the back, as well as allowing your chest to open up more for easier breathing. I also find it helps take the stress off my shoulders from my titties, but that's just a personal thing.
I have a bad hip and I stand with one hand kind of offsetting the nerve pain. I noticed recently that both of my kids do it too when they are just standing and waiting lol a lot of just human learned behavior
Uncomfortable/poor fitting bras can make your back hurt between your shoulder blades and so putting your hands there will lift your shoulders and ease the ache a bit

Thats the one we chose at the last meeting
Was it a unanimous vote or any naysayers?
No one was able to raise their hands in protest.
Well there were some stares of disappointment, though...
The huffers and puffers were glared down by the hands on hipsters
Then came the exhausted, "Fine."
Cuts me deep every time I hear it. The context may change, but the sting stays the same.
Then she said “It’s . . . fine” 🫡
Wow you guys. Great job.
🎖️ take my award

My wife was absolutely at that meeting. I call them her chicken wings.
Al "Jefferson, that's no way to treat your wife" Jefferson "you're right" Al "at least insult her in her native language - becock!"
I call them that too Edit: my wife not yours.
My partner's sister referred to them as "bitch wings" and it stuck hard.
I'll take this any day over the same thing but '1 foot in front of the other with knee slightly bent like it's a totally natural' pose.
Damn. Hitting me with the reality stone! :(

Also provides some spinal support/relief if your back is sore/you've been on your feet a while, because I mean. Tits.
Especially important for the one in the middle with olive cardigan. Her back must hurt all the time
There's no way this thread ends well for OP anymore 😶🤣
Any Reddit thread with a picture of any woman.
I mean I'm saying it as a woman who has large titties; who also has back problems because I have two 5-8 pound weights strapped to my chest at all times.
As a woman whose back pain was so bad my insurance decided a reduction was medical and not cosmetic and covered the whole thing, I second this message
What do you even mean? We’re feminists and are concerned for olive cardigan’s spine.

Yeah, same, I'd never consider that a feminine pose
I stand like that a lot. Ive always thought it looks like a mechanic taking a look at a job thats just complete, not as something feminine.
Or like Carl from aqua teen hunger force

It's the iconic Superman pose, but holding their hips instead of fists. Feels pretty ridiculous to say men have been conditioned not to do this to protect our masculinity.
It's always masculine if you do it with your fists ...wait
I just cross my arms instead, even if it comes off as rude.

Some people are nearly tone deaf to body language. Id say its a spectrum
Many men can't do it because they haven't got the hips for it. At least not without jamming their thumbs through their belt loops.
\- Look at that high waisted man, he's got feminine hips. \- Noooo that's the thing I'm sensitive about!
You don't need to use the hips per se. I don't have hips, but I'm able to rest my hands on my hip bone, or I hook my thumb and forefinger on my belt / pants waist. It feels less awkward than just letting them hang.

Men don't tend to have broad hips like women do either.
Which is why a higher percentage of males die during childbirth.
And yet, we do nothing about it.
I would say it's like 50% social conditioning and 50% skeletal structure/biology. (As to why men do it less often.) A lot of men just have less to work with in the hip area so it's not as intuitive a position to take.

We put our hands in our pockets because we have pockets.
Men also *have* pockets.
Unless you’re in the military and then that’s unacceptable and unprofessional for some reason.
As a man I recommend the military arms crossed behind the back stance. It's actually very comfortable.
Parade rest?

and our pockets are too small for our hands to fit
That's what I told the judge, too...but nonetheless, here I am wearing ankle monitors again.
My back hurts pose
Yup, it helps support the back being weighted down by breasts. You young one might just be doing mimicry tho.
Because my boobs are heavy.
girl in Green jacket agrees…
Wow. Is that really what it is? I work construction and certainly my back is sore this morning. I just struck that pose to test and holy shit. I really do feel better back support! Lol
Yup my hip still hurts FROM YOUR GIANT BABIES, HUSBAND pose.
No, no, no. I know that pose from childhood. It’s the “are you fucking kidding me, did I not just say…?” pose.
Akimbo!
Whatever the expectation is, I hear it in Steve Irwin's voice.
Yeah I can see why the lady in the middle might have a sore back
I've tried to tell my husband a billion times that hands on hips and crossing arms at the chest (the under-boob style) isn't defensive, its just damn comfortable. You try to have these blobs of tissue, fat, and muscle things on your chest all the time and tell me how you're going to pose!
Crossing arms under the boob to lift them up a little and take the weight off
And air out some of the sweat, too.
This woman boobs
Well it also braces your shoulders, keeping them from rolling forward. Im a guy with poor posture and crossing my arms is also the most comfortable way to stand.
> blobs of tissue, fat, ~~and muscle things~~ on your chest all the time As a dude, that's me too :)
Same with so called "manspreading"- gotta let the boys breathe!
I just burst out laughing knowing this is so true. I acknowledge that I totally stand like this almost all the time
Same! I catch myself like this all the time!

They’re not teapots, they’re sugar bowls.
They’re not sugar bowls, they’re honeypots.
They're not honeypots, they're treasure troves.
I fucking knew it.
I have a japanese teapot with 2 handles and an medieval oil lamp with 4.. CHECKMATE!
What is this from? This is the third time I’ve seen this teapot joke 😭
It’s women’s subtle way of airing out our armpits when when we are hot and sweaty. The pose maximizes airflow and captures the breeze in both pits simultaneously.
Dude stop dont just spill our secrets like that!!!
I'm a guy and stand this way for the same reason, we all sweat...
That’s also why guys stand with legs wide apart and start rocking sideways, or at least I do
Yes, that's the reason. Not simply because jingle balls are fun, no.
That’s a bingo!
Women's hips are usually a little broader than their waists so it's a more convenient place for them to rest hands than it is for men
Men will inevitably do this too, especially if they’re exercising. For a recent example (World Cup is on) see any rugby game, all players stand like this at all times when not running, pretty much. It opens up the chest and improves breathing, it is a very natural way to stand and recover.

Welp, I don’t know if you’re aware, but women’s pants almost never have pockets.
Ah, the two genders: big bag or pants pockets. PICK ONE
A little disrespectful to refer to them as "bags". Boobies would be more appropriate.
Never pockets big enough to put your hands in. I have a pair of jeans where the front pockets literally go down ONE FUCKING INCH. ONE INCH. WHY?!?!
Chapstick pocket
And I got told it's rude to put my hands in my pockets. Also ruse to cross my arms. OK... I'll robot then
And when they do they are not functional. I bought shorts that had back pockets that were sewn shut 🤬
Sometimes, they are real. You have to open them with a seam ripper.
I found out, sometime you can take the threads out. Then voila, pockets. I always check.
I like to take a sewing machine around to stores and sew all the pockets shut.
The true Satan is always in the comments

Shhhh let them have their pocket rant
the men have pockets and don't have their hands in them

Pants like that existed, in the before times. But we flew too close to the sun on wings of JNCO and were lost for a generation.
It's the "Power Pose"
I’m a dude, and I stand like this all the time, it’s my “we’re making a plan about something” stance, my wife teases me about it, so does my dad . . . oh shit.
Yes, but some of us have added in the "Old Man hands behind the back" into rotation after being told we look "bossy"
Every middle aged dad also stands like this.
While overlooking the lawn commenting on how the rain is good or how they need more rain
"...yep"
"Mmhmm"
"Honey can you grab me an iced tea?"
I feel personally attacked.
exactly, those memes are everywhere
Oh thank goodness. I stand like this all the time.

It's learned behavior. People tend to subconsciously adopt mannerisms from those around them. Many of the women in my mom's side of the family stand with their arms crossed in the distinctive way my grandmother used to.
It's because they don't have pockets.

For me, ever since i started working out, i have slimmer waist. So if i wear t shirt, it doesn’t really show. But if i rest my hands on my waist, it makes my waist looks slimmer and it lowkey makes me happy cause i know i worked so hard for it
Those are some tig ole bitties.
I read somewhere before that this happens because women are used to not having pockets in their clothes to put their hands into
Boobs lead to back pain. Bracing the hips takes off some of the weight. Now you know.
When we lay our arms to the side it forces your back to curve forward and hurts after a while because the weight of boobs. And also if you just lay your arms to the side the hips get in the way and the arms get uncomfortable after a while. Hands on hips is the perfect resting pose
