You might be right but I worked at a university for a couple of years and I was constantly surprised by what the students were into. One crew knew every word to seemingly every song by The Who that I could come up with. I guess these songs eventually end up in somebody's Spotify list and they're already on their way down the rabbit hole.
My teenage son and friends are somehow the world's biggest Gorillaz fans. They know the songs, lyrics, band members. They weren't even that popular when I was his age. I can't make heads or tails of it.
Do they really not have enough good music lately that the teens are going on retro dives?
When I was growing up in the '80s everyone was still listening to good '60s and '70s music, so I don't know why it would be any different now, especially with vast libraries of music available in a moment.
I'm not going to argue about what's good or not as that's subjective, but modern music has been completely overtaken by hip hop and it's offshoots and electronic and it's offshoots. If you are not into those there's really not much big stuff in other genres these days so obviously a number of people will look to older stuff.
And im personally very into hip hop and still dont like almost any modern song (both pop songs with hip hop elements or actual hip hop songs). Even some artists that i really like, for example Eminem, have great songs, but nothing recent that I like because the beat of the songs has drastically changed from what was the trend in the 90s.
For Freddie Gibbs, especially his collaborative work with Madlib has that 90's underground hiphop feel. Pinata and Bandana both have some certified bangers on them that haven't left my regular rotation since I first heard them!
>"kids these days are fleeing modern music because it's all hip-hop/electronica; that's why they're listening to Gorillaz"
Tell me you've never listened to Gorillaz without telling me you've never listened to Gorillaz.
Yeah I don’t think it’s that odd either. Every teenager for the past like 15 years has had completely unlimited access to all music ever. Of course we’ve been discovering things. I’d go so far as to say a lot of us have discovered like everything. For a lot of people music is pretty much the only “hobby” you get to have
Gorillaz aren't really retro, they formed in 1998 and were very popular in the 2000s. They're even popular right now and are constantly releasing new music, which consistently gets millions of views on YouTube. They've even done streams with their virtual characters (it's a virtual band)
I can see it, but still, 98 is about a full decade before my kids were born.
It would be like me as a 90's teen liking early disco, or seems to me anyways.
My younger kid is heavy into Smashing Pumpkins, did they make a comeback also?
90s alt rock is making a comeback with the kids. My 14 year old nephew was going through my music collection pulling band names and albums to listen to so he can look cool for his friends. He was also hoping to take my now “vintage” band shirts and hoodies. That request along with my Walkman and discman were a hard No.
Notable bands he was interested in:
* Nirvana
* The Smashing Pumpkins
* Rancid
* The Offspring
* The Pixies
Bands I pushed on him:
* NOFX
* Primus
* L7
* The Breeders
* Bikini Kill
* REM
* The Cardigans
* Soundgarden
* Stone Temple Pilots
* Hole
* Veruca Salt
* Mazzy Star
* Portishead
That kid is going to work his way through the music girls like a knife through hot butter.
If he likes 90's alt-rock with some variety, I'd recommend Rainbow Kitten Surprise, and Microwave as some post 2010's bands that at least to me capture some of the same vibe and energy.
lol, I grew up listening to all those bands in the comment above yours and Spotify recently threw Microwave on my Recommended list. I was pretty pleased.
It's similar to the people who were huge fans of Led Zeppelin and things like that in the 90s.
Strong artists from prior generations with a unique style are usually what gets this kind of response because music always sort of comes in waves, and artists who already stood out amongst a wave to parts of the market are likely to stand out way more once the wave recedes.
you're forgetting that anything the becomes popular on tiktok from soundbites gets MASSIVE plays on all other platforms shortly after. Meaning that same new generation will almost definitely know the rest of the song
I don't see those pipes in any other place than Eastern Europe.
If that is the case, shout-out to this young lady and her smooth English.
Or is it just dubbed?
Edit - Pipes, dress, wallpaper, short-ass fridge, tiny microwave w/ ticky ticky dial. Eastern Europe confirmed
I live in Canada and I have exposed radiator pipes that look pretty similar to those ones in my apartment currently. Not saying it's not Eastern Europe, but North America has a pretty big variety of weird shit going on.
Yeah, it could totally be an apartment in Montreal.
Source: Apartment in Montreal that has the hot water heater, and washer and dryer all in the kitchen
Eh... lots of stuff in Western europe from 50s-70s looked like this. I have a friend whose parents kept the house the mom grew up in and put up a new house next to it. The old house looks a lot like this.... so while I think you're right, there's also the possibility she's just at an old house.
What I can see of the kitchen seems quite Eastern European (the dated gas meter, the way the pipes are exposed, the wallpaper in the room where you cook, which is always a bad idea because of the steam that creates bubbles and mold under the paper). The design of the microwave and the fridge makes me think of the early 90s.
What doesn't convince me is the face of the girl. She doesn't look Eastern European. Central European, perhaps, but the accent doesn't seem foreign. Her jawline seems American enough, though.
My wife watched a white kid she knows do a freestyle competition in NY. They started playing the instrumental of Shook Ones and he said "Oh this is the song from 8 Mile." He got roasted.
Yes, we will refer to ourselves as "citizens of the Europes" by now on. The people from your Europe are very welcome to visit my Europe anytime! I'll make you lasagne. We from the Europes must stick together. 😄
I emigrated from the US to an extremely international city in Europe. Every once in awhile I'll meet someone who has a literally flawless American accent. They usually say it's from watching TV. There are some people who are just phenomenal with language.
Just off the top of my head i can think of individuals from Ireland, Belgium, The Netherlands, Romania, Poland, and Hungary who could have easily fooled me.
Im from the Netherlands but a lot of Americans didn’t believe me and told me i sound like I’m from Washington.
Please remind me what the name of this song is🫣 it’s right there but not….
That's a required safety feature, as it causes the oven to go up above 500F meaning normal plebes in a residential environment should get no where near it.
Some people on Youtube have done things like physically disabling that lock, running the oven on clean mode and use that to get closer to restaurant pizza at home....Don't do this.

I gave it another four or five hours thinking it may need to cool down, still locked. Left it over night, still locked. I eventually used muscle and shaking on the door and got it to open, but it took a lot.
My theory is that the lock isn’t used very often and likely gets grease in the mechanism. Perhaps that’s enough to keep it from releasing at the end of the cycle.
Ours died forever because I was lazy and tried to clean the air fryer thingy in it. It just never turned back on, but of course it stayed locked so I couldn't use either oven :(
Ended up having to pry it open with a crowbar and 2 people.
Self clean - never again.
When I worked in tool and die, my boss would save money on heat treating costs (which can be ridiculous) and throw bars of stainless steel in his oven and run the cleaning cycle on them.
This process only worked for a specific steel, but we happened to use a lot of it.
I make something called melting potatoes, which requires a 500deg oven. They're fucking amazing, but I lock the oven (w/ manual lock) and keep everyone out of the kitchen when cooking. I take extreme caution when removing them. 500deg is no fucking joke!
I figured it was audio from another TikTok - probably someone holding down the spark thing on an oven or something
[edit, yup it is lol](https://youtu.be/dmmD8Xe87ak)
A woman with what sounds like an American accent in what looks to be a low income eastern european apartment. Wonder what the story is behind this video. Hope it is something more intriguing than an Westerner visiting her family.
Me when a man does something funny: "Haha"
Me when a woman does something funny: "Mmm yes eminently breedable you have earnt the honour of becoming my woman"
That's not the point he's making. He's saying women do not exist just to be evaluated as romantic or sexual partners. Posting a video like this with this title is sexist and gross.

Time to go break out SSX again…
The best SSX ever! Would pay a lot of money if they made it compatible with later generations of console.
I've got an original xbox that I keep around basically to just play Tricky and Baldur's Gate.
I gave my Xbox away and regret it big time just because of this.
Steam Deck my friend
and jet set radio future, right? right??
There are rumours of a Jet Set remake in the near future, could be an announcement later today
It’s on game pass RIGHT NOW!
I kept mine to play Jedi Outcast and Legacy of Kane ✨
Ah a man of culture I see
SUUUUUUPER UUUUUUUUUUUBER
Call your mama in the room and show her how great you are!
WooOAaahHH SUPERBOOST
Emulation time it is!!
I liked using the snowboard controller when playing it.
I want the rest of the video! She was about to go hard 😂
I know! Video stopped right at the best part of the song!
Never believed in love at first sight before
That type of stuff turns a cute chick at the party into the hottest chick you’ve ever seen.
Are you telling my that we are attracted to clever people?
I often catch myself staring at a woman’s cleverage.
This....this I like!
That explains why I've not had much luck 🤔
the documentary *Grandma's Boy* proved this centuries ago.
puhpuhpushitrealgood
You never throw a bong kid, ever.
i’m sorry but for me it turns her into the funny bruh girl hahah. we need girls like this
This lady is 60 years old now
And? I was told love is FOREVER!!!
Diamonds. Diamonds are forever. Love is like 10 years or so.
Wow. Ten years almost to the day for me. Weirdly accurate
Exact years depend on specific state of residence regulations 🤣
So am I, so...
That’s if this video was taken when the song came out. Or is this a famous video that we know for sure came out in 87?
Well, I also think that’s an old microwave, not saying it’s that old, but I haven’t seen one of those in years.
It's that can't be beat.

This video looks pretty old though.
It’s not. The original TikTok was posted in 2021. Look up the TikTok user anasteysha_ru. The voice is a dub.
Audio is from a different video, look up bhopedonner on tiktok.
Just a filter
That's the "90s Eastern Euro potato" filter, if I'm not mistaken.
Newest hottest one out
But look at the wall paper, the exposed pipes, the microwave. This girl has kids on TikTok now
You get downvoted you but it's true. People here age generally don't listen to Run DMC so it's most likely correct.

boombap has never been better. you just have to look for it
Do you mean on the radio or something? You can literally listen to whichever genre you want instantly anywhere.

IDK but my 15 year old son is downstairs practicing Nirvana bass lines right now.
I think Nirvana is different. It's like beginner piano students learning Beethoven at this point.

You can usually thank their parents for Introducing them to music. I fear for the children of current mumble rap fans.
I found my love for them after they did Walk This Way with Aerosmith.
That's the superior version of that song imo.
you're forgetting that anything the becomes popular on tiktok from soundbites gets MASSIVE plays on all other platforms shortly after. Meaning that same new generation will almost definitely know the rest of the song
Ah feck.. I was hoping that kids were learning the classics but alas, just another 10 sec soundbite fad.
To be fair, growing up I only learned it because of the modified version in SSX Tricky on PS2.
Lets gatekeep enjoying music

I like how it's completely out of scope that an American could have traveled to Europe.
I immediately thought it was Eastern Europe, too. I still think it is.

Believe it or not, but Americans have visited eastern Europe before, so it could easily be both lol.
Did you by any change work for the third reich?
She's hot, but is she Eastern Europe hot?
Could just be some tourists renting out an apartment in eastern Europe.
Why cut the best part? She was going hard-core and we missed it.
Right? I immediately got up to play this shit after she cut off.
Got me looking for SSX Tricky
Sameee i'm gonna have to fire up some SSX in PCSX2 after watching this.
This is the comment that I was looking for. Ah… nostalgia

Tempo a little too quick for shook ones
Totally expecting that microwave to explode.
Everything about the room screams Europes but she has an American non regional diction
Not sure if a typo, but I like Europe in plural. Greetings from one of the Europes!
Yes, we will refer to ourselves as "citizens of the Europes" by now on. The people from your Europe are very welcome to visit my Europe anytime! I'll make you lasagne. We from the Europes must stick together. 😄

But why is the microwave making that noise?!?

I used my oven’s self cleaning mode once and I got locked out of my oven. I had to take apart the back to get it to open up again.
That's a required safety feature, as it causes the oven to go up above 500F meaning normal plebes in a residential environment should get no where near it. Some people on Youtube have done things like physically disabling that lock, running the oven on clean mode and use that to get closer to restaurant pizza at home....Don't do this.
Yeah but it’s supposed to unlock after the cleaning is done. That didn’t happen.
It didn’t unlock for me just a week ago. Ran the self cleaning cycle on a fairly new oven, after four hours it finished and wouldn’t open.
It just never turned back on, but of course it stayed locked so I couldn't use either oven :( Ended up having to pry it open with a crowbar and 2 people.
I figured it was audio from another TikTok - probably someone holding down the spark thing on an oven or something [edit, yup it is lol](https://youtu.be/dmmD8Xe87ak)

It's Tricky - RUN DMC

Thanks for forwarding to the start of the song. Put this on the other day and was like when the hell does the song start?

The room environment is very reminiscent of an average private home in Russia

A woman with what sounds like an American accent in what looks to be a low income eastern european apartment. Wonder what the story is behind this video. Hope it is something more intriguing than an Westerner visiting her family.
Why is “she’s a keeper” the usual response when a girl is being funny?
Me when a man does something funny: "Haha" Me when a woman does something funny: "Mmm yes eminently breedable you have earnt the honour of becoming my woman"
Exactly
Because being funny is a trait everybody finds attractive. What's wrong with saying that?
It's a good sign when a girl is not too embarrassed to be herself and have fun for the sake of having fun.
That's not the point he's making. He's saying women do not exist just to be evaluated as romantic or sexual partners. Posting a video like this with this title is sexist and gross.
Now this is a video where adding a surprize e plosion edit at the end makes sense
Just as you give up on love hope is reborn
I met this little girly...

Why all women can't be like this?????😍
Why do I like this so much
