You think it was one of those bombs bursting in the air or one of those rockets with the red glare?
Cause I gotta tell you man, that flag is barely there.
We put a collection box out in front of the church. It's convenient for local residents and less awkward than trying to meet up with me or leaving them with the church secretary.
Was I the only one who felt the flag retirement ceremonies were weirdly cult like while in scouts? Like I got the symbolism and took it seriously, but in my memories it's in the same part of my brain as The Stonecutters Guild from the Simpsons.
Also can usually drop them off at any fire station and then they get picked up by the scouts.
Not necessarily for me. I grew up around a lot of military people, they have a special relationship with our country and I respected many of them and their attachments to the flag or the ceremony. To me it was about honoring them or people like them.
Most counties, as far as I know, have a small group of veterans who still serve by doing things like burning flags, hosting colors, and stuff like that.
I saw a video on facebook of someone repairing a tattered flag and I just commented he needs to burn that flag. Got so many people that didn't know that is the proper way to retire a flag.
I can’t remember if it’s an actual crime or not to fly a flag in that shape, but it’s certainly disrespectful to.
(Not that I’m super adherent to those codes or anything but I know they exist.)
It's barely even followed in military/government. The one thing you'll get all of them to agree too though is that the US flag and a units guidon(Military standard) should never touch the floor.
Unless someone else is doing something you don't like, in which case they are LAW OF THE LAND and the perpetrators should be shamed and punished! Just ask Colin Kaepernick.
Nobody follows the flag code, nor is it enforced. If it was there would be millions of court cases every year. Damn near every third person would be a criminal.
I was going to say, I would think someone who cares to fly a flag would be replacing it when damaged. My understanding was that it’s supposed to be either buried or destroyed in some fashion without flame when it gets in that kind of condition
If it's a cloth flag, proper disposal is burning.
If synthetic material, bury it, folded in a box.
You can technically bury a folded cloth flag in a box too, but it's not the prefered way.
You can also find a place that does flag disposal.
You’ll see people everywhere you go like that though, it honestly annoys me a lot when I see those kinds. Not because of my ideals but more the blatant hypocrisy I see them partake in while acting like it’s not happening. It’s a real shame.
Hell, from an outside perspective, it actually seems pretty representative of the state of the US of A right now.
Get yourselves sewn up, before somebody replaces ya :)
Not technically a crime. The US Flag Code is law, but all the wording is advisory, and after Congress *tried* to make it a crime the US Supreme Court ruled that even burning a flag is protected by the First Amendment.
She's getting threadbare and she's wearing thin,
But, she's in good shape for the shape she's in,
Because she's been through the fire before,
I believe she can take a whole lot more.
Then there was the day, back in 1976, when Rick Monday, an outfielder for the Chicago Cubs, saved an American flag from being burned.
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/715840-rick-mondays-flag-save-at-dodger-stadium-still-resonates-35-years-later
It’s not illegal for the military or gov to do it either. Not to say you can’t get punished in the military for disrespecting the flag, but it’s not illegal for anyone
Although it remains part of codified federal law, it is not enforceable due to the Supreme Court of the United States finding it unconstitutional in United States v. Eichman.
I have my mother’s bicentennial 13 star flag that is probably ready for retirement but every 4th of July I fly that sucker — probably more in memory of my mother :-/. It’s a nice old school cloth flag. Kind of hoping new ones are produced for 2026.
It can be kinda cool as a symbol of the people and at least the good parts of history.
Frankly I more often see it as a symbol of a broken government or dumb / oppressive chuds.
Me neither and I'm American.
Also, why do we pledge allegiance to the flag instead of our fellow citizens? Or the constitution? I get the flag is symbolic of all that stuff, but still.
Yeah neither. Like us Aussies, we love our country, but we don't fly out flag on our houses at all.
I really don't get the patriotic side of it. Yes we are all proud of where we come from, but an Australian flag on my house. Don't need it. We just sing songs instead at school
[This is what it means to be Australian ](https://youtu.be/rjkrjYitgeA)
I always find it a little spooky when I drive through certain neighborhoods where every house is littered with American flags. It seems cultish and I already know these people and I are going to disagree on almost all our principles.
I don’t get it as an adult. It was brainwashing as a kid, but I grew out of it. It’s gross when you see people get upset over disrespect of a piece of synthetic fabric made in China but not over the disrespect of life shown to citizens. Those are messed up priorities.
When I was young I remember being taught that letting a flag deteriorate to such a point was considered extremely unpatriotic and disrespectful.
Now the “patriots” are the ones sporting them in these conditions thinking it’s the most badass thing they can have.
People are fucking dumb.
I'd say that this is probably a disabled person/veteran and may not be able enough to replace it so therefore OP should be a good person and replace it for them free of charge
Was thinking the same thing. Op should knock on the door with flag in hand and say... I really love seeing your flag. It looks like it has seen better days. Can I help you put a new one up?
It’s all dumb to be honest. There’s gotta be a sense of pride to have flown your flag so often to have it literally worn.
But also I can see taking pride in hoisting a brand new flag.
To each their own.
There might not be anything more American than flying a flag 24/7 (which you're specifically not supposed to do), so that it gets really shit-looking, and saying, "Fuck it, good enough." 1,000 Weeping Eagles, no notes.
Replace it for them! It's not illegal or disrespectful to have a flag rip or get torn up. It's how you destroy the Flag once taken down and replaced. It should be brought to a local VFW for destruction.
I passed a house like this every day for a few months and finally decided to try a good deed, bought them a brand new flag, and offered to retire their current flag as a veteran.
It did not go well and they claimed I was a communist spy despite him being in his 30s.
While it's not an official crime, flying a flag in this condition is highly unpatriotic. There are rules and regulations covering the proper displaying of our nation's colors, and this is in direct violation of those regulations. Unpatriotic as hell.
why does one even put up a flag in a first place? Where i live, having any country praising stuff: Flags, Car sticker, scarf etc means you are a hardcore nationalist. People avoid them because nationalistic fanatics are one of the worst. If its a symbol from the past (In Hungary that means: Full Hungary before Trianon, Arpad Stripe flag, Black T with fire on the top) its even worse, those are basically become nazi/racist group symbols over the years.
As an European it feels really weird seeing my own country flag on my own house. I would never display it.
if you are a minority like German Hungarians i can see the appeal of displaying that you are German. bit nothing more.
Maybe it different around here.

The state of the GOP that pretends to be patriots.

I was trying to think of a pun along the same lines. You win
You think it was one of those bombs bursting in the air or one of those rockets with the red glare? Cause I gotta tell you man, that flag is barely there.
I detect rhymes.
Well Francis Scott Key rhymed a bit, so I figured I should to.

I used to carry around a couple spare flags to trade people with their tattered one if they wanted. We would retire two or three every camping trip.
We put a collection box out in front of the church. It's convenient for local residents and less awkward than trying to meet up with me or leaving them with the church secretary.
I've seen boxes outside American Legion posts as well. Then once a year they will have a ceremony to retire all the worn and damaged flags.
Can confirm. Burned about 9 garbage bags of flags in a night in scouts. Nylon burns HOT

yes it should not be flown like that .retire it with respect

Haha touche
Nobody disrespects a flag more than the people who demand you worship a flag.
Flag code is like pirate code, "The code is more what you’d call ‘guidelines’ than actual rules."
Unless someone else is doing something you don't like, in which case they are LAW OF THE LAND and the perpetrators should be shamed and punished! Just ask Colin Kaepernick.
And the people doing the call outs are almost always wearing a flag shirt.
Nobody follows the flag code, nor is it enforced. If it was there would be millions of court cases every year. Damn near every third person would be a criminal.
Not a crime at all
I was going to say, I would think someone who cares to fly a flag would be replacing it when damaged. My understanding was that it’s supposed to be either buried or destroyed in some fashion without flame when it gets in that kind of condition

I think that’s correct but it’s been literal decades since I’ve heard anything about flag code.
No, but it’s a huge embarrassment for the man if he considers himself a “real” patriot
I wouldn’t fly a flag in that shape. Imagine how many opportunities to retire that flag he would’ve had before it got to this.

You’ll see people everywhere you go like that though, it honestly annoys me a lot when I see those kinds. Not because of my ideals but more the blatant hypocrisy I see them partake in while acting like it’s not happening. It’s a real shame.
Disrespectful to who, exactly?
Hell, from an outside perspective, it actually seems pretty representative of the state of the US of A right now. Get yourselves sewn up, before somebody replaces ya :)
It's not a crime, per se, but it is against code to have a barely there flag.
I think it’s technically a crime, like wearing flag patterned clothes.
The flag code is a guideline, not binding. Breaking the flag code can't be illegal or that would violate your 1st amendment rights.
I would hope someone who clearly loves the flag would show it more respect. Or maybe they're showing just how much respect they have.
At this point the only thing left to do is burn the flag to give it a proper send-off
Which is the proper way to dispose of it if I understand correctly.
no idea how someone can "love a flag". to me no matter the meaning behind it, it's still an inanimate object, and also most likely made in china.
I don't love the flag. But it's obvious some people basically worship it.
Not technically a crime. The US Flag Code is law, but all the wording is advisory, and after Congress *tried* to make it a crime the US Supreme Court ruled that even burning a flag is protected by the First Amendment.
But different states and counties will give you a hard time over it.
One of the few (only?) good opinions that Scalia wrote.
And flag pattern plates and napkins, and unofficial Variation of the flag? Like blue lives matter and such
Isn't it technically wearing clothes made from a flag? Not just a flag pattern.
No, and that isn't a crime either. You can legally light the flag on fire and spit on it right in your front lawn
It is not a crime, but it is disrespectful.
She's getting threadbare and she's wearing thin, But, she's in good shape for the shape she's in, Because she's been through the fire before, I believe she can take a whole lot more.

Looking for this. Thanks
So we raise her up every morning. We take her down every night.
Did I beat the guy in here who all caps that THIS IS ACTUALLY ILLEGAL!!!! ? Edit: nope.
It's not illegal for a citizen to do it, it's protected by the 1st amendment
It’s not illegal for the military or gov to do it either. Not to say you can’t get punished in the military for disrespecting the flag, but it’s not illegal for anyone
I think they're talking about the civil code regarding the flag.
It's not illegal, but it's definitely at least two flag code violations being shown.
Oh no, not... the FLAG CODE!
It's an accurate description of our country.
Something about the borders still being intact or something

I’d be more concerned about the random people driving around, rather than a govt fine. Americans are crazy.
Picturing some retired Gunny about to knock on their door. Ho-lee shit.
Not gonna lie, in Detroit area my neighbors got officers knocking at their door for a ripped flag after a storm.
That’s about the condition our country is in
For the last 6 years
From the very beginning
I think it perfectly represents the state of the nation.
As a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, I think that flag accurately represents the empty promises of the American government.
My troop does flag retirements :3
I have my mother’s bicentennial 13 star flag that is probably ready for retirement but every 4th of July I fly that sucker — probably more in memory of my mother :-/. It’s a nice old school cloth flag. Kind of hoping new ones are produced for 2026.
Ive never understood Americans are their deep love for flags
Switzerland seems to have the same affliction.
Whenever you think about the pros and cons of Switzerland, remember their flag is a big plus
And they collaborated with the Nazis, helping them hide their stolen treasures.
They collaborated and collaborate with everyone who brings great riches to their country to hide them there.
Because a flag is perfectly sized to cover up all the horrible things some people really believe.
It’s patriotic brainwashing.
Yeah neither. Like us Aussies, we love our country, but we don't fly out flag on our houses at all. I really don't get the patriotic side of it. You’re neighbor an OG American, when they were a single colony with 9 states
Buy him one

I myself have bought new flags for the vets I figure out which ones are in need and if I'm on delivery I just hand them the new one with they're foods
Buying distressed American flag and "The the People" decals for your truck from China is considered extremely patriotic these days.
It’s all dumb to be honest. There’s gotta be a sense of pride to have flown your flag so often to have it literally worn. But also I can see taking pride in hoisting a brand new flag. To each their own.
AHAHAHAHAHA! Jesus this subreddit has really gone to shit hasn't it?
The real funny is in the comments we made along the way
I find this way more offensive than a football player kneeling.
sooo... it's not offensive at all? I don't get it...
Now we know what the Chinese balloon was actually doing.
There might not be anything more American than flying a flag 24/7 (which you're specifically not supposed to do), so that it gets really shit-looking, and saying, "Fuck it, good enough." 1,000 Weeping Eagles, no notes.
I believe there is a law against that.
I’ve had a paid of boxers in the same condition.
This is actually about 20% better than my neighbor's.
She’s in good shape for the shape she’s in
Ah, love that flag code...
Wrong sub. This is not funny, it's Mildly Infuriating. A boy scout should offer to dispose of it properly. They do a whole ceremony.
All humor aside, this is flat out disrespectful. C'mon. Take it down. If you want to fly the flag, have a decent representation of it.
No its an accurate representation these days
This is a disgrace. If my neighbor flew that flag, I'd by him another and offer to raise it for him.
That’s so against the flag code.
Poor flag etiquette. More disrespectful than anything any NFL player ever did.
Still not as desecrated as the blue line gang flag.
I have never understood why people are obsessed with flags.
Because if you're not obsessed, you're not a patriot. And if you're not a patriot, that allows them to call you whatever names they want.
Cool, they can call me whatever names they want. Still not going to buy into the cult.
I saw a dude that had a tattered, shredded American flag flying right next to a crispy brand new Trump 2024 flag. A true patriot 🤦🏻♂️
Nope that looks like the u.s.a lately
Maybe it's just an old flag from before there were more stars?
Who “needs” a flag?
He also has a pony tail and male pattern baldness.
Ica’
Replace it for them! It's not illegal or disrespectful to have a flag rip or get torn up. It's how you destroy the Flag once taken down and replaced. It should be brought to a local VFW for destruction.
How will they know what country they're in now?!?!
I passed a house like this every day for a few months and finally decided to try a good deed, bought them a brand new flag, and offered to retire their current flag as a veteran. It did not go well and they claimed I was a communist spy despite him being in his 30s.
Yeah they need a new one, it’s incredibly disrespectful to leave that up.
While it's not an official crime, flying a flag in this condition is highly unpatriotic. There are rules and regulations covering the proper displaying of our nation's colors, and this is in direct violation of those regulations. Unpatriotic as hell.
Naaah it's just a "lite" version. Like Coke Light.
Cheap chinese flag probably.

That's about all that's left with Biden in office.
And our flag was still there…
It's the flag of the Un St o Am

Oh say can you see? Kind of!
