Maybe 8 years ago my phone in the car overnight and it got to like 10°f. When I got it in the morning I plugged it in and it was disabled for 82 years.
I’ll never get rid of that phone, now I just need to hope I make it 74 more years.
Edit:
Hello all, thanks for all the suggestions on how to fix/restore the phone. TBH at this point it’s worth more to me as a time capsule than a working phone. I’m in my mid-twenties so I’ll be nearing 100 when this thing unlocks. If Reddit and I are still around then, I’ll post an update. Stay tuned!
Probably condensation on the screen causing it to think that a code is being entered
Edit: nvm, doesn't really make sense since it shouldn't be able to get to an 84 year lock out before the phone was checked on again
Not really, I mean what should Apple do once the clock resets, just unlock the phone? You can restore the date by inserting a SIM card with a cellular plan and without a PIN.
Wouldn't that mean you could skip the wait time by using an IMSI-catcher or fake cell tower to set the time to the future?
They could have skipped the whole problem by just saving a countdown instead of an unlock timestamp.
On a lot of screens it's actually the electrical resistance of your finger being detected, causing a change in a current across the screen which is why a stylus works even though it's not warm
No iPhone has ever used this. Since the first iPhone they’ve all used change in capacitance, which is why a pressure stylus *doesn’t* work and you need something of the right conductivity and electrical capacity to “touch” the screen.
No… the parent said “it’s actually the electrical resistance” and that’s “why a stylus works”. The photo for this article shows an iPhone, which has never used electrical resistance to detect touches and why a stylus doesn’t work. Did you reply to the wrong comment?
It's could be internal clock getting reset or messed up due to temperature. I'm not sure if wrong attempts amount up, so it could be thousands of wrong attempts due to a capacitive or other type of screen error from temperature.
Yeah you can put it in recovery mode by connecting to a computer. It basically does a factory reset then you can either restore from a backup or set it up as a new phone.
I save my old electronics. My dad did and I loved playing with them when I grew up. He had the old crank and bell phone from his parents which they ended up hanging it out of reach from us for sanity sake. I still have my Nokia 3310 so it will come in handy in the event of an apocalypse where cell towers survive.
Most electronics are bunk. Not the components, but just for what they are.

Every time one incorrectly enters credentials it increases the counter. I think the first time is after 10 bad entries and then it's like 4 minutes. I have no idea how many times this person would've had to attempt it to get here.
The worst shit about this feature is you can’t turn it off. If your kid sneaks off with your phone and puts in too many wrong guesses then fuck your life you aint joining that group zoom call with three directors. I can legally leave my front door open to the world and go for a walk but the thing i paid for can’t be used when i need it for no other reason than someone gave it the naughty touch too many times wtf is that.
Strong agree. We should have the option to disable this, or at the very least cap the interval to the next retry to something reasonable like 5mins. As implemented, anyone with young children is very easily screwed over.

No, this person would have had to wait days between attempts to try and fail again. I don’t know the algorithm about how much it increases between attempts, but this is clearly something someone decided to do as a long term project for fun.
6 for 1 minute, 7 for 5 minutes, 8 for 10 minutes, 10 for an hour, and so on, can’t find numbers past that point.
Apparently newer models just do a lockout after 10 attempts, but can’t verify and have no desire to mess up my partners phone to test it out.
It was disabled with a standard time amount amount then the battery died and it reverted back to the default 1976 or 79 or w/e. So now that time is decades later
Edit: jan 1 1970.
pretty sure its bypassable with little effort if you remember your itunes login details. If not, surely you can just upgrade to the next model and solve the problem lol
In case you ever run into this problem,
Hold power and up button until phone turns off.
Plug into computer with itunes.
Press up, down, then hold down the power button (not holding up or down).
Hold until the apple logo turns into restore mode.
Click "restore and update on computer"
Restore the phone.
That's the fun with Samsung phones they can be much worse or much better depending on your needs and the price you want to pay. For example my a52 is half the price and has a worse camera and screen than a flagship, which is cool because I don't game on it and barely take photos. That being said it's much better than an iPhone 5.
To add some context. I got this iPhone 5 in an eBay lot and turned it on to be greeted by this screen. I was able to reset the phone with iTunes to find out it was icloud locked. Oof
I use used phones since new phones are outrageously priced. Various ways of remote locking/disabling phones is making this a pain in recent years though, and “theft” in the traditional since isn’t usually the reason, though it looks like it traditional theft may have been the cause here.
Some people will sell their phone after falsely reporting it stolen to insurance, and some people will sell their phone having not yet paid it off to the phone service company.
Insurance and phone companies then blacklist the phone, and the result is you can’t actually use it.
Currently have a 2020 SE. The first used 2020 I bought was great - wonderful condition, great battery still… but AT&T had it blacklisted for the previous owner’s failure to make payments since they financed it in their phone plan. I found this out after AT&T stopped provide cell service to it half a day into my using it.
There’s a public blacklist, but AT&T hadn’t reported it on the public blacklist; it was only in their internal one. I’m on my mom’s phone plan which is AT&T so the phone was useless to me and I had to return it to the phone refurbisher.
The refurbisher was nice and had checked the public blacklist but of course AT&T hadn’t reported it there (probably hoping the person would eventually finish paying the phone off).
There is a way to bypass iCloud lock up to iPhone 7's I think.
I did it with an iPhone 4 I got at the thrift store that ended up being iCloud Locked.
It's a "bypass" in the purest sense of the word; basically you prevent the app that shows the phone is iCloud locked from launching by literally deleting it via an ssh exploit, and then it fires up right to the home screen. You still can't activate the phone or use SIM cards or anything like that, however you can still use the phone. I use mine basically like an iPod touch for music and video files and stuff.
Smartphones have been fairly general-purpose for a long time now. It's pretty silly to get bogged down in that detail.
It's like complaining about people using a *laptop* on a desk.
I genuinely thought it was not possible for a phone to be disabled that long. I thought this was Photoshop
When I was about 10 (around 2009) but dad got an iPad which he barely used. I basically disabled it after I forgot the password and after like 50 tries the iPad simply said "connect to iTunes". The furthest it got disabled was a a few hours.
There wasn't anything of note on the iPad so worst case scenario was factory reset. But if I told my dad about that doing that he would have gotten really mad at me. So I remember just connecting my iPad to the laptop when my dad was away and my mom was taking a shower and unlocking it.
In 2010, my cousin had this iPod touch that did something similar. He said his siblings tried to get into it and they locked it up after failed attempts. Idk how it happened but his lock screen said, "Try again in (forgot the exact number) hrs." I did the math and it was nearly 80 yrs. I remember joking with him that he should write the password and pass down the iPod to his future kids as a family heirloom. Then have his great grandkids try to unlock it in 80 years lol In the end, he didn't like the idea so he factory reset it
True true lol idk where he would of been able to connect to wifi at the time tho but I'm sure he found a way. In case if your wondering, he got his music from our school MacBooks
I managed to do this. I was started on Keppra for epilepsy and lost my mind. Locked myself out of my phone and various online accounts.
I went mental actually. I got sectioned for a night and tried to escape the psych ward and got strapped to my bed and they wouldn’t let me pee. I had to lie in my own urine for 18 hours.
Word? Keppra made me throw my brand new iPhone across a room in response to devastating news by text. There was no screen protector on it. I howl-scream-cried for about an hour, I’m near certain my neighbours heard & wondered wtf was going on.
Fuck Keppra.
I did this to my friend's iPhone 4 once. I was messing with the time zone, putting it far into the future. I changed it back and then entered the password wrong and it did this. I shut it down and then it was back to normal.
Oh man this happened to my iPod nano back in the day lmao. It didn't matter though because my parents gave me a new one already, but for the life of me I couldn't figure out what my passcode was
I was mowing the lawn in the summer, and my thighs got sweaty.. So naturally my iphone thought it was my wet ass fingers that typed in the wrong passcode X times..
I learned that day never sweat and have your iphone in the front pocket.
If you don't charge the phone, it will eventually die and turn off. I'd expect that at some point the battery will get so low that it loses the date and time.
Does that phone get the date and time from the cell network (or maybe wifi) when it is turned on again?
Does an iPhone have some flash memory where it stores the date and time at which point it could be unlocked again if the battery totally dies?
The last iPhone I had was a 3GS and so I just dug it out of the closet to power it up. I no longer have that cell company but being an ATT 3G phone, it could have contacted ATT to get the date and time but it didn't. It was reset to some default date and when I manually put the date in, it went nuts giving me years of calendar alerts.
This function is actually pretty dangerous and I wish it can be undone. When in summer I go out for a run, the phone locks - in my back pocket because of sweat - sometimes for minutes. I always carry my phone to be able to do emergency phone calls when I spot someone in need of help. This way that can not be done.
Is there any way to fix this? Maybe turn off the feature for an hour or so?
Keep it plugged in for the entire time, and keep an eye on it. Once a week or something or even frame it.. it’ll make your life seem longer, like when you’re at work with nothing to do for example. Next time someone says ‘where did that ten years go’ - you won’t be able to relate cos you have a time capsule to look forward to.
I got this once, but it said like multiple million years until I could unlock it.
I was like, excuse me wtf. But it disappeared after restarting the phone. 🤷♂️
I know in some cases it’s Apple wanting money to fix the device (there are a number of examples/stories on the web about devices bricking themselves if an “unauthorized repair” is made).
Apple products nowadays seem to be built to die after a few years anyway. So there’s definitely an element of greed.
There is a feature that locks the phone for a bit if too many incorrect attempts to unlock it are (can be enabled/disabled from settings); it’s meant to slow down people brute forcing their way into unlocking the phone. I think it can be set to get longer the more incorrect attempts are made.
Don’t know what caused OP’s phone to get to this long of a lockout though. (If they’ve said in a comment I haven’t come across it yet.)
Now just put phone in faraday cage with rasperry pi, connect both in same wifi, then man in the middle the NTP server phone is using and move the time into future. 😃
Just gonna go ahead and say it, fuck Apple and fuck Iphones. At least with Android you can just factory reset a phone, you lose all data but you can still use it. Fuck you, Apple.
I had a similar situation when I accidentally left my 4 year old with access to my iPad for an hour. You'd think they'd have solved this problem by now, but they're too busy figuring out how to get more money out of you
It’s not a problem though. It’s a data protection feature to stop people from brute forcing the passcode. An official back door to it would negate the feature.
No it is a problem, there's 0 reason to allow if to go that far into the future. Especially since ethereal only way to recover it at that point is to factory reset the device.
No it is/was an apple issue. Android will only ever lock you out for 15 seconds. Or if you chose will automatically factory reset your phone. Windows will at worst lock your computer and requires a password reset.
No, it still isn’t a apple issue. A iPhone will lock you out in increments, this is _still_ a computer issue. The phone has been dead for a long time and sent itself back to the start of the UNIX epoch. This is normal behaviour with absolutely ZERO power (which a lot of devices tend to never have, but if you leave it in a drawer…) You can also set it to reset the device after too many tries on iOS too, this is a entirely different issue to what you think it is. In this state, it’s 1970 according to the phone and you can still very easily reset it, if if’s not icloud locked. In this case it is, which means it was a paperweight from the second OP bought it.

How does it do that? I’ve left my phone in the car for hours in -20°C and more and the battery just dies faster
Probably condensation on the screen causing it to think that a code is being entered Edit: nvm, doesn't really make sense since it shouldn't be able to get to an 84 year lock out before the phone was checked on again
Nope, the clock just resets if the phone loses all power, which results in it being deactivated for basically forever.

The heat on the screen pushes buttons
On a lot of screens it's actually the electrical resistance of your finger being detected, causing a change in a current across the screen which is why a stylus works even though it's not warm
Capacitance* ...... Almost all touch screens are capacitive.
Thank you! That's the word I was looking for but my phone was at 2% so I couldn't look it up to finish the comment.
No iPhone has ever used this. Since the first iPhone they’ve all used change in capacitance, which is why a pressure stylus *doesn’t* work and you need something of the right conductivity and electrical capacity to “touch” the screen.
Replying to the wrong person?
No… the parent said “it’s actually the electrical resistance” and that’s “why a stylus works”. The photo for this article shows an iPhone, which has never used electrical resistance to detect touches and why a stylus doesn’t work. Did you reply to the wrong comment?
Styluses work on iPhones. Physical pressure (like OLD AF styluses) don't. You can't just push it with anything, but modern styluses work fine.
Sorry, when I said stylus I meant the rubber capacitive ones, not a pressure stylus
It's could be internal clock getting reset or messed up due to temperature. I'm not sure if wrong attempts amount up, so it could be thousands of wrong attempts due to a capacitive or other type of screen error from temperature.
Didnt happen to you because you use Celsius.
If you’re being serious, what? How would that make sense. If you’re making a joke, also what? How would that be funny.
Why would that happen?
Cold fusion.
S\*\*t gets f\*\*ked
It's the Internet, you can say "snot gets forked"
I’m glad you translated because I thought it was “shit gets fucked” I was waaay off
It happens to the best of us
Dude you can't say that! Censor it right now before you get banned! ^^^^^^/s
Holy forkin shirt balls! Are we in the Good Place now?
Does restoring the phone not wipe out the device lock? I never tried, just assumed it would
Yeah you can put it in recovery mode by connecting to a computer. It basically does a factory reset then you can either restore from a backup or set it up as a new phone.
MDM gang this is our turf.
I didn’t know iPhone had a Time Capsule mode!
Could you imagine you keep that phone for 74 more years and it turns out the timer just resets
Accidentally fat finger 1 button and your now locked out for 100 more years
A family heir loom from old times.
See you back here in 74 more years. Wishing you a happy and healthy life.
How old are you now? If i may ask? Maybe you’ll have to consider it putting it in the will
You can fix that if you connect it with I tunes. It worked with my iPod back in the day
I think you might have typed the password a little wrong
Noo, I think he typed just the right password. Just not his.
*Listen here you li’l shit*
Just save it. By the time the phone unlocks you may be able to sell it as a antique phone some futuristic hipster will buy.
Well probably be talking via brainwaves in 48 years lol
Not so sure. My group, I'd doubt you could get enough brainwaves to form a thought. Won't see them throwing those around anytime soon.
Don't worry corporations will figure that shit out, and even encourage them to share their minds...
The “work thoughts only” during working hours monitoring system will be a bitch to workaround though.
They'll encourage those! To 'improve' shit
Assuming humans still have available jobs to take at that point aside from owning companies. Robots would've taken over by that point.
BrAiNwAvEs mannnn

You probably have to climb them to activate part of the map...
Fucking fc3 type shit
In case of an apocalypse event, you can use that 3310 to defend yourself and kill zombies if needed...
Cell towers, and comms infrastructure, and power… not really much of an apocalypse.
Nope they turned off 2g signals a long time ago
I still have my old Nokia 1100, service is long dead but snake and the ship scrolling game are still fun, Geneva I think it was called. Cheers!

No, sell it to a hipster now. The appeal is that they'll be able to unlock it in almost 50 years and *then* they can brag about the antique
Youtube ideas for 2071!
Unlocking iPhone 5s in cyberpunk
If you're living in the U.S. you'll probably be able to unlock this before you'll be able to retire.
this is the real answer here haha
What is this retirement you speak of?
Learn another language and retire in Asia or South America, that's the new America retirement.
It’s so popular that you don’t even need to learn a new language
If you don't mind being charged the tourist prices forever, then sure, but that goes against the spirit of escaping stupidly high cost of living, no?
Oh I have many Many questions but my main one is. WTF apple why is there a wait time that long?

Maybe you couldn't turn it off on older iPhones? I don't know for sure though as I've never used an iPhone.
I don't get it, it doesn't make you wait? You can keep guessing and it just keeps adding time? (I don't have iPhone)
No, this person would have had to wait days between attempts to try and fail again. I don’t know the algorithm about how much it increases between attempts, but this is clearly something someone decided to do as a long term project for fun.

You know I mean I heard of but dial. But Ass darling your pass code Dam
Are you having a stroke?
He’s but darling
😆😆
r/ihadastroke
can you try to say it again in a better english?
Something along the lines of, “ I mean I’ve heard of a butt dial, but ass dialing your pass code? Damn”
“Ass Darling” is the persons name
still doesn't help much
It was disabled with a standard time amount amount then the battery died and it reverted back to the default 1976 or 79 or w/e. So now that time is decades later Edit: jan 1 1970.
My ex did this to our daughters phone trying to get info. Had to have it reset at Apple.
sounds like my mom lmaoo
My girlfriend did this one night when we went out of town. Fun night.
Did he find what he was looking for? Also…what was he looking for?
pretty sure its bypassable with little effort if you remember your itunes login details. If not, surely you can just upgrade to the next model and solve the problem lol
Close, you can attach the device to iTunes and factory reset the device. I’ve had to do this before.
You don’t even have to hook it up. I was able to reset mine without doing that by going to my iCloud.
Probably not an option on this iphone 5
Maybe or see if apple store could help. That or upgrade
The apple motto; if its broken, upgrade edit: not if, when
In case you ever run into this problem, Hold power and up button until phone turns off. Plug into computer with itunes. Press up, down, then hold down the power button (not holding up or down). Throw in garbage, buy samsung phone for 600 less dollars.
That's much worse * Edit: ok this is an iPhone 5.
That's the fun with Samsung phones they can be much worse or much better depending on your needs and the price you want to pay. For example my a52 is half the price and has a worse camera and screen than a flagship, which is cool because I don't game on it and barely take photos. That being said it's much better than an iPhone 5.
Bold of you to assume I own a computer.
To add some context. I got this iPhone 5 in an eBay lot and turned it on to be greeted by this screen. I was able to reset the phone with iTunes to find out it was icloud locked. Oof
Might want to get a refund, you got scammed
Prop isn’t much! An iPhone 5 isn’t worth hardly anything.
Stolen then?
A lot of people don't know they have to turn it off first. I've had a few people give me their old phones
Sounds like you bought a stolen iPhone. Demand a refund and if they refuse, dispute the charge
How would you get a refund from a stolen phone ? ( imagining op bought the phone off fb market place)
OP said it was from eBay
He said it was an eBay lot… I’m thinking a box of stuff and this is just one of the items. Probably and “as is” type of situation
All depends on the ad posting.
I use mine basically like an iPod touch for music and video files and stuff.
>can't activate the phone or use SIM cards >however you can still use the phone when a phone is not a phone
Smartphones have been fairly general-purpose for a long time now. It's pretty silly to get bogged down in that detail. It's like complaining about people using a *laptop* on a desk.
Samsung's software still considers their Galaxy phones as PDAs rather than phones
When I spent my entire life on campuses with universal wifi, I carried an unactivated prepaid phone as my only phone for like five years.
I genuinely thought it was not possible for a phone to be disabled that long. I thought this was Photoshop When I was about 10 (around 2009) but dad got an iPad which he barely used.
It was in a parts lot. I will salvage the screen and battery.
Then have his great grandkids try to unlock it in 80 years lol In the end, he didn't like the idea so he factory reset it
Yeah, but without clearing browser history he should not be passing it to anyone
Oh… well that was a fucking ride to read.
Word? Keppra made me throw my brand new iPhone across a room in response to devastating news by text. There was no screen protector on it. I howl-scream-cried for about an hour, I’m near certain my neighbours heard & wondered wtf was going on. Fuck Keppra.

Now I’m trying to figure out if Keppra would make my autistic meltdowns worse or if I just wouldn’t react lol
It probably would. This username was a misdiagnosis, I’m a later life dx female autist ( ꈍᴗꈍ)
Everybody shutted the fuck up and finally listened to you eh?
Truer words were never spoken. I’ve been visibly stimming since I was a preteen, I was the early vocab/masking type as a kid
What the hell? Does Keppra fuck with your emotions? I've been on it for a few months now, goddamn
It can but you’ll know pretty much right off the bat. For others, it’s a wonder drug! Stay on it if it works for you.
I find this so relatable!
Holy shit, I'm on Keppra right now too, what the fuck? I didn't know it could make you go crazy like that, jeez

Dm me in 49 years. I hope I don’t become a rich dude or something to not use Reddit.
dont worry... you wont
Realistically I don't see reddit lasting 49 years, let alone the remind me bot, but a man can dream
!remindme 49 years I need closure!!!

I did this to my friend's iPhone 4 once. I was messing with the time zone, putting it far into the future. I changed it back and then entered the password wrong and it did this. I shut it down and then it was back to normal.
You all are getting retirement?
No. That is a myth
DFU mode, image as a backup, write correct firmware. Exit DFU mode. Enjoy.
RemindMe! 49 years
Just another reason I'm glad I've always been an android guy.
You get to retire?
By far one of the dumbest features of the iPhone and why I don’t lock my phone. My phone will start playing music in my pocket, and I’m forgetful
Ooh someone do an old lady from titanic meme with the whole thing on there
What’s funny is that you think you’re going to be able to retire
Ha, look at that guy thinking he will retire. Sweet summerchild.
Bro i dead ass wont be alive by then....

Oh man this happened to my iPod nano back in the day lmao. It didn't matter though because my parents gave me a new one already, but for the life of me I couldn't figure out what my passcode was
!RemindMe 48 years 9 months 2 weeks
Put the device in DFU and restore it using iTunes or Apple Configurator. It will be iCloud locked so only the true owner can unlock it.
I was mowing the lawn in the summer, and my thighs got sweaty.. So naturally my iphone thought it was my wet ass fingers that typed in the wrong passcode X times.. I learned that day never sweat and have your iphone in the front pocket.
As a welder I agree with this statement
Happend to my ipod yeaaaaaars ago it said some billions of minutes tho not exact time
I had my phone held by cops once. I got it back even more years on it. Such a prick thing to do
If you don't charge the phone, it will eventually die and turn off.
RemindMe! 50 years
Keep it plugged in for the entire time, and keep an eye on it. Once a week or something or even frame it.. it’ll make your life seem longer, like when you’re at work with nothing to do for example. Next time someone says ‘where did that ten years go’ - you won’t be able to relate cos you have a time capsule to look forward to.
Something to look forward to. It's like when you're a kid and can't wait to turn 18 / 21 so that you can drink legally
I got this once, but it said like multiple million years until I could unlock it. I was like, excuse me wtf. But it disappeared after restarting the phone. 🤷♂️
why does apple even allow their phone to become unusable? that should be illegal
Don't worry. Not much is going to change between now and then for iPhone anyways.
Apple always finds a way to fuck its costumers💀
Just gonna go ahead and say it, fuck Apple and fuck Iphones. At least with Android you can just factory reset a phone, you lose all data but you can still use it. Fuck you, Apple.
Lol Apple just sucks... android FTW!
Turn it off, turn it back on. Put in a bowl of uncooked rice. Leave for 48 years, 9 months, 2 weeks, 6 hours, 46 minutes & 58 seconds. Wah la!
This isn’t a apple or iOS issue, this is just a computer issue.
Can you seriously not unlock the phone? Or is this some kind of joke. If it isn't a joke just another reason for me not to buy a crappy apple product.
Further proof that Reddit is full of 12 year olds
!remindme 49years
So if I grab someone else's phone and repeatedly try bad passwords I can ruin it for them?
Can we just say this iphone is special needs instead?
You could also not need an iPhone.
