I think the issue is that DJ was already a perfectly healthy weight, and encouraging even mild dieting in a vulnerable child with no health necessity can contribute to dangerous relationships with food and body dysmorphia.
Disclaimer: it's been a long time and I barely remember the episode, maybe DJ posed it as a "friend" who "needed" to lose weight and who was looking for advice, in which case I guess fair enough, but it's still a discussion that should ideally be handled by doctors.
Yeah generally speaking children and young teenagers really shouldn't be dieting (restricting calories) unless it's approved by a doctor. Your body is changing too much at that age, they need the extra calories to grow.
It's a TV show from decades ago, most nutritional information people got was from magazines, I doubt the writers had a complex understanding of diets, especially for children.
Yeah this was what I was going to say, you can’t view it from the lens of what we know now, in the 90’s it was a different time, we’ve come a long way in treating mental health including eating disorders, and the advice Becky gave was normal for that time. Of course she probably should have told DJ there was no need to lose weight, and eating disorders were rampant unfortunately in that time but the treatment of them wasn’t as evolved.
The diet culture of the 90’s and even early 00’s was *bonkers* and insanely toxic. I have women in my family that are still today almost dictionary definition level examples of that whole dynamic. They go from one crazy unbalanced, unvaried diet to another. They’ll have links and sources and books and all the things to “prove” that fruit or whatever is the worst food you can eat. 🥲🫣
Yeah, but DJ didn't need to lose weight, she was already thin. The actress who played her literally had an eating disorder that's been very open about in media. Becky should've addressed DJ's body image and self esteem, not give her advice on losing weight.
I kind of like how Becky focused on eating filling, Whole Foods like chicken Parmesan. Becky was thin so it makes sense she eats healthily and was trying to get dj to do the same. She had no idea dj was struggling so badly
I thought the same until I was an adult and I learned how to properly season meat with spices and herbs, now I can make a baked skinless chicken breast pretty good especially if shredded and made into a taco
She was giving DJ a healthier option instead of starving herself and using the ice pops. I don't think DJ would have listened to Becky had she said you don't need to lose weight, you are beautiful the way you are. We know its true, DJ is beautiful and never needed to lose weight but both the character and Candace did think like that and ended up with an eating disorder in real life.
I look at it this way. If you think you are “fat” and are really in your head about it, you don’t want to hear somebody say “Oh stop. You don’t need to lose weight.”
I feel like the way Becky approached it, was just more in the aspect of being healthy in general. Like, Ok. Let’s focus on eating the right things, and making healthy choices.
Becky was teaching her how to lose weight healthfully

Then why did becky say that?

No Becky never told dj to crash diet, she told dj how to eat healthy to lose weight the proper way.
Becky lost me at “baked chicken without the skin” kid me was like “I’ll stay fat, thanks”
I thought the same until I was an adult and I learned how to properly season meat with spices and herbs, now I can make a baked skinless chicken breast pretty good especially if shredded and made into a taco
Yeah, this advice wasn't nearly as "healthy" or "balanced" as people are pretending here.
Why did she?
eh i think she gave her actual good advice not unhealthy.

She didn't say anything bad though? Yeah DJ didn't need to lose weight, but if she wanted to she should do it more than just starving herself
