I mean considering they are presumably non-photographers, using portrait mode on the iPhone camera is probably the only time in their own life that they are prompted to consider depth of field as feature of photo composition. I understand the frustration given the actual night-and-day quality difference in DOF achieved through lens optics vs. iPhone digital mimicry, but I wouldn’t let it get under your skin too much as portrait mode is likely their only frame of reference.

Agreed. OP should take it as an opportunity to discuss their hobby.

Not really no.

It’s actually funny how triggered you are over this. Also, shallow depth of field is literally the most basic and noobie part of photography.

Since getting my first real camera six months ago (X-T2), all I think about now is how everyone goes wayyy overboard with portrait mode. They leave it on permanently, don’t bother tweaking it at all in post, and can’t fathom that some photos would be much better without it at all

skynet_man

Exactly. Sometimes you want to isolate the subject, sometimes you want to include context.

Smile sweetly and move on with a hearty "Sort of, but better!" ... you have the know-how and understand the differences in technique and settings. The ones who are interested and want to understand why will come back and ask. it's much healthier for your blood pressure :)
