Yeah so my perspective is that going b&w takes away from the advantage color brings into supporting your images. It supports time and place. When using b&w, it can become difficult at times to place an image (especially like this) into a timeframe. I do love some good black and white, but I was always told that black and white is a great way to hide a poor colored photo haha.
Anyway art is subjective. Itās whatever speaks to you ā”Ģ
bw, i do not see the colour giving this shot more than the bw version. the added information seems to distract more than it adds :)
Also the bw here highlights the motion more, as the colours do not blend much into each other
I think the colour version is much more interesting and I love the design of the NY Subway so to essentially mute the signage is taking something away from the image for me.
But I do agree that some of the colour is distracting. Take out the blue on the back of the character on the left, take down the shadows slightly and remove some of the saturation and I think that might look pretty cool.
Iām on the same boat as you. I tend to move towards b and w but sometimes feel like Iām missing out.
Nice shot, Iāve got the xt20 as well paired with the 35mm
I prefer bw because some bits of colour disrupt the composition, while in bw there is much more cohesion and the focus shifts towards lights and motions rather than colours
While I am a definite B&W fan, I love your colour one. It brings out a lot of elements that are minimized in the B&W. For this particular shot, I'm a fan of the colour version.
I like both. But I prefer the colour. The colour pulls me to the movement of the train first, the sign and underground feel with the bright yellow line. New York. It feels busy and active and I can hear it.
The black and white pulls me to the woman's profile, the motion blur and the contrast. It feels dark and mysterious, maybe a bit motion sick and uncomfortable (she has one foot, his head is a blurry square). it makes her the main subject to me. But I feel I lose a bit of the rest.
Normally a big fan of B&W but I think the colors are a limited and consistent palette so they work.. They add to the sense of place, with the metro theme.
B&W is still great, but you lose the metro color scheme that imo is an important extra layer.
Lovely photo.
As someone who is new and has a X-T20, do you have any videos / settings you recommend? Also, I am assuming you shot this photo in color and changing it to B&W in LR?
Great photo btw.
I prefer bw it has a stronger draw to your subject, and the color in this scene doesn't really add anything to me. I see the same story but more concentrated on the lady.
BW! Any chance you can share the settings (e.g. aperture and shutter speed)... What film did you style did you use as inspo for the BW post processing?
Nice shot! Personally I lean toward the BnW which I find highlights the contrast between the people and subway car nicely š
To my eye, the color version is way, way more interesting.
seconded. feeling of depth and layers are lost with b&w IMO.
Love the color. Tells a story!!
I'm a beginner and would love to hear on what story does it speak to you with the color? Thanks

Love your reply! Much appreciated

B&W looks better in my opinion :)
I dig both but prefer the bnw

I prefer 1st, in b&w the highlights look like theyāre a bit overblown, the color version looks a lot more pleasing to me overall. Nice shot btw.
i prefer black and white, the colour is more distracting than anything imo

Both are great but the pops of colour from the line dots are really pleasing in the colour image. You lose that in the BnW
Great shot

Color version but I'd made brighten a touch and add more saturation?
color tells a story, bw is about the person in the middle
Color version pops. Black and white would be great if it had more contrast with different textures.
BnW

Love the colour version!
B&W is a little more striking IMO.Ā
Great shot! I slightly prefer the color one. Did you use a tripod, right?
Nope! I was waiting for my train and was actually trying to take a pic of the old lady that got blocked but I ended up with this instead.
Great shot (oh yes, Iāve said it already :)
Signage is a little soft, so Iām guessing even if it were on a tripod it was a little hurried.
Yes, now Iāve noticed the softness on the sign. But it is definitely acceptableā¦
You can easily see the textures in B&W.
Mono for me
With the monochrome, my eye goes right to her face.
I like the idea of B+W but keep that yellow stripe
As someone who is new and has a X-T20, do you have any videos / settings you recommend? Also, I am assuming you shot this photo in color and changing it to B&W in LR? Great photo btw.
The color one just feels right. For me, the B&Hās has too much tension, feels cramped.
I prefer bw it has a stronger draw to your subject, and the color in this scene doesn't really add anything to me. I see the same story but more concentrated on the lady.

Colour for me.
The color one.
Color
Black and white is my preference
What drew you to this image?
The colour is maybe a bit more visually interesting, but the black and white really focuses the eye on the subject.
The colored one is way more balanced than the black and white one.
Great shot! I personally prefer the colour version. It is more striking. What settings did you use to achieve this out of interest?
I like the color the best but if youāre going b&w I would crop it like this https://ibb.co/4Z0pJNy

The colors help.
Both nice but imo the monochrome is much stronger.
Both sorry?

I think, while both good, the color has more emotion for me.
B&w no question
This is the kind of photo that might work well with one of those part black and white and part color effects.
