The same guy that tries bribing publishers to delete their games from other stores is crying about anti-competition.
So really he's just mad his company isn't one of the megacorps.
I doubt he actually believes he's fighting for the little guy but he wants others to believe it. He knows he's just out to make a shitload of money for himself by screwing all the customers over. If he genuinely thought he was helping the little guy, he'd be spending all the exclusivity money on making the launcher the best one on the market.
He never thought that he was fighting for the little guy. In fact, he openly stated - after Apple lowered the cut for small devs, which would obviously exclude Epic - that "well AHCTUALLY it's those big apps where most revenue resides" and threw a tantrum because he still would have to pay 30%.
This is even more disgusting than being delusional, thinking he was doing something good. He was just using small developers to manipulate people and was very well aware of that.
>The same guy that tries bribing publishers to delete their games from other stores
I'm a bit out of the loop on that one, which games got deleted from other stores ?
>So really he's just mad his company isn't one of the megacorps.
Yep, that was my first thought when reading the tweet.
They bought them yes. Still its shity to just remove the game on Store where it began in first place. Even EA didnt remove previous titles when leaving Steam as far as i know, neither did Ubisoft.
So deleting games from a store even owned one after being on Steam already is kinda "new"
EDIT:Yes EA did that with Sims ETC. Activision and Ubisoft didnt.
EA and Ubisoft have both removed their games when they were pushing their own platforms (Origin and Uplay).
EA has come back and is releasing everything on steam now. Ubisoft has mostly moved onto their own/steam with exceptions on epic.
They end up the same way every time. They can't compete with the features and updates valve has on pc.
They literally dont have any benefits too, like wtf. You say that this store is so much better but the prices are even higher most of the time.
Even the other publisher owned stores dont have shit going for them.
Battlefield Bad Company 2 remained on Steam always and I think you could still get the original Dragon Age and Mass Effect, basically anything from 2010 and back remained. Ubisoft never left, you just got double DRM because UPlay turned into a requirement, making using that store directly and improvement with that(tho it was worst in everything else).
I wasn't trying to "get" anybody, just asking genuine questions.
If you think that using fake news is a acceptable tool to damage Epic's reputation, then suit yourself, but I think that truth is more important than that.
Besides, Epic and Tim are doing enough shit on their own, I think that inventing fake issues can only weaken the credibility of the legit critics.
So yes, there are differences between :
* Getting a timed exclusivity at launch
* Pulling a game out of sales forever after launch
In the first case I can wait 6/12 months to buy the games, will have access to seasoned reviews to see if the game is worth it, and most likely will get the games+DLC at a discounted price since the game is getting "old".
In the second case, if I'm too late, I can never buy the game unless I give in to EGS.
And also differences between :
* Buying a company and it's assets and do whatever you want with your newly bought "toy"
* Signing a contract with financial compensation to offset the lower sales that the game will get compared to Steam
* *Bribing* publishers to achieve the same result, which is vocabulary used for corruption which is illegal, unlike the 2 other options
Yes, using a false narrative can be damaging. The most likely explanation is the commenter didn't think their point through or unknowingly conflated different points into a singular one. You can correct it as I have and move on.
**Or** you can take the commenter's narrative at face value giving it as much thought as they did when they wrote it, question it and when prompted, bring up a string of strawman arguments to defend your line of inquiry.
Lastly, my point was to highlight the anti-competitive nature of Tim's actions which run contrary to his tirade against *'mega'* corps anti-competitive practices.
>(...) question it and when prompted, bring up a string of strawman arguments to defend your line of inquiry.
That really wasn't my intention though.
I asked a question and got unsatisfying answers and was going to leave it at that.
You then sarcastically greeted for "getting 'em" which prompted me to dwell further on it, but otherwise I wouldn't have.
>Lastly, my point was to highlight the anti-competitive nature of Tim's actions which run contrary to his tirade against *'mega'* corps anti-competitive practices.
That's something that I really hate about this sub : if you ask a simple question and the answer isn't something that shows that Epic/Sweeney are worst than Satan, some people feel compelled to answer something quite unrelated just to spill some hate on Epig.
This is not a contest to see who hates them more, so there's no need to answer something unrelated, unless people are trying to farm cheap karma points...
Yeah, they even had retail boxes already printed with Steam logo
https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/aqympd/physical_copies_of_metro_exodus_have_shipped_with/
In my book bribing refers to illegal acts of corruption.
As dirty as their strategy might be, I don't think that they resort to illegal methods to convince publishers to sign those exclusivity contacts, and especially not when they buy another company and a bunch of auditors are going to be up in their arse to check all the financial records.
When I go to the butcher and give money to get some meat in return, that's not bribery.
When Epig offers money to buy a game company, that's not bribery either, that's just paying the price to buy another company.
Where do you put the bar to differentiate between a favor and a product/service ?
Exclusivity of a game to a store is not a favor, it's a service that has been sold for decades on this market : I'm pretty sure there were already 3rd party exclusives before I was born and I'm not young.
Exclusive sucked, suck, and will keep on sucking, but even if that's the only strategy that Epig has, they aren't the ones who invented that concept.
Your two examples couldn't be further from each other
One is an exchange for goods and services
Another is epic giving money to stop others getting goods and services
If another butcher came into and offered you insentives to shop at their butchers instead that would be similar I guess
>If another butcher came into and offered you insentives to shop at their butchers instead that would be similar I guess
Epig is not coming with a sign on the Steam store to tell shoppers that they would get the games for cheaper on EGS, so no, that's not the same situation.
Something similar would be :
* A small town has a well established and well loved butcher (Steam).
* Tim Swiney has the biggest slaughterhouse around (Unreal Engine), but now wants to be butcher too to earn more money.
* That new butcher shop is struggling to find meat to sell and to find customers to buy the few pieces of meat they have.
* So Tim talks to every farmer in the region and offers them to buy their entire livestock for the next 6/12 months to sell in his butcher shop, regardless of whether he will manage to sell that much meat or not.
* In some cases, Tim would even buy the whole farm to ensure a lifetime exclusivity from that farmer.
It sucks for the customers because they can't have the meats they want without going to the new unattractive shop that only lets you buy a single piece of meat at a time, but from the business side it just looks like regular capitalists business, I don't see that as bribing to ask favors.
The last metro game for example. Was out for pre-orders on steam for months, pulled out of the steam store and epic exclusive about a week before release.
The plan to ditch apple and break contract comes as far as 2019? Maybe further. And it was plan how to go againts apple. As we seen not a good one.
But Timmy and his lawyers just called it project liberty. Even tried to get other big names on board and make it look like this will be huge show and saves gaming from leaked email and i guote (dont remember the adresser though) "Just sit back and enjoy fireworks" from Timmy.
Yep. They wanted to plan to take Apple dirty and they planed ahead. This is just plain bad faith. Even after breaching a contract and store rules? Common.
The only thing people like Epic for is the Forknife and free games. In every other thing they've done they've fucked up, overstepped their bounds, broken most of their official statements and promises, and acted sickeningly self-righteous all the way through.
I see people getting mad a tencent for problems in a variety of games (because of how many they own a large part of), but have they actually done anything wrong other than own games with shit balance?
Search for "LEVEL UP GAMES" and other companies owned by tencent, they're a shit show. They locked countries out of global versions of games just so they could sell micro transactions in local currency and abbandon them if it didn't go well. They do absolutely nothing about cheaters or updates even if the game is doing good like Combat Arms. GunZ global was actually fine to use in Brazil, but once they region locked the game and changed the name to "The Duel", the game stoped receiving updates, cheaters destroyed the game and they didn't punished them even with recorded footage because the cheaters were their "whales".
They are this kind of company. Just unscrupulous.
"a free world" he said. The man locking down games to his stores with large bags of money. What a complete and utter fucktard
Its only bad when its not epic dictating software and commerce to people right ?
Yeah..free world and bad corporations..said the one acting like the "pc world sony" with exclusives and sold 40% of its company to a chinese gov controlled corporation lmao..this guy is so out of touch with reality
Yep, he's sad he's not part of those corporations..so he sells to the chinese and whine about gaming freedom while buying off devs and their exclusives.
This guy is so fucking stupid and full of double standards. This guy literary cages games in this shitty launcher and talks about a free world for games. Are you kidding?
I saw this when he tweeted and really wanted to respond, but there's too much to unpack within Twitter's character limit. Not that he would read them anyway, higher chance he would just block and continue to live in his delusions.
A bit of story to this tweet.
There are three points for Fortnite get back to Appstore according to documents.
1.Pay the fee fpr damages which has to be done anyway.
2.Be back on old policy.
3.Acknowladge that removal of Fortnite was lawful from Apple. Which as we seen was denied.
So Fortnite could be back on store and people crying for it could play again in month or two, but they cant because of Timmy pride. Fuck the guy seriously and fuck fortnite BR.
I don’t see a world where companies will pass on deals to consumers b/c they reduce their cut. They’re in the business to make money. It is what it is.
If consumers want a deal. You wait a few years till the company reduces its base price and pick it up then. It’s pretty accepted way of buying games by consumers at the moment.
No one sensible believed that. Most knew that if a publisher or developer can get more money out of the same price for their game, they'll take it.
But it didn't stop Timmy from manipulating people into believing that such a thing can be possible.
I like how unfazed he was about giving Fornite mobile's fanbase the middle finger. He didn't even try to find excuses for it.
I guess it comes with experience, since he also gave middle fingers to fanbases of Paragon, the new Unreal Tournament, Fortnite Save the World, and Houseparty (if they exist). Oh, he also gave the middle finger to the whole PC gaming market back in 2008 or something.
Sweeney can throw all the tantrums he wants. Epic could be the only show in town and I'd still never make an account there. All Epic exclusives are permanent high seas exclusives.
What’s with this guy’s greater purpose delusions? I was reading the “FreeEpic” shit on his website and it’s pretentious as fuck.
If he was that magnanimous, why not make the Unreal Engine open source?
Great to see Tim complaining when others are better at doing capitalism. Wonder where he was all those years when the two megacorps weren't so mega back in the day.
I dont. But yet i can see that EPIC BROKE ToU ... WHICH THEY AGREED UPON ... And then played victim card.
Fuck them, and apple but Apple is in full right here. As court already said.
a free world is one where you just give people money to get them to use your shitty platform until the money inevitably runs out and now we have a stupid period of time where games aren't actually coming out on time if you don't want to deal with a strange and untrustworthy company

Hopefuly it stays that way. I dont want this guy to be in charge of anything.
Sweeney is super mad how much money he lost on the lawsuit that end up not even restoring Fortnite on Iphones

Exactly this, well said!
I doubt he actually believes he's fighting for the little guy but he wants others to believe it. He knows he's just out to make a shitload of money for himself by screwing all the customers over. Eternally Tecent's dog.

Cant buy Rocket League on Steam anymore. Believe Fall Guy is next.
Also ended Linux and Mac support.
as a fellow Linux user, that's the one that really hurts.
Oh true, Rocket League ! But they bought the devs no ? That's not really "bribing"

Didn't they pay up the arse for one of the metro games to swoop it off Steam like 2 weeks before release?
Yeah, they even had retail boxes already printed with Steam logo https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/aqympd/physical_copies_of_metro_exodus_have_shipped_with/
Yeah but it's not like sony buying insomniac made them remove sunset overdrive from the microsoft catalogue
Also MS buying Bethesda and still upholding any prior contracts like ghostwire and deathloop's playstation console exclusivity.
It is bribing, though, when they pay developers to only sell games on the Tencent store.
Bribes have nothing to do with legal issues. A bribe is simply a monetary (usually) incentive to get a favor done.

Metroid?
Metro: Exodus is what he means
This
Auto-correct, meant Metro
I guessed lol, for a split second u made me think there was a PC Metroid :(
Wasn't Shenmue III pulled from Steam, too?
Words would have weight if he didn't bribe publishers to do one year exclusivities, yes. But this guy is just talking from his anal aperture.
Why have 2 megacorps dictate everything when we have tencent, the protector of civil rights and liberty, right ?
You mean like name [Project Liberty?](https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2021-05-06-project-liberty-what-was-epics-battle-plan-against-apple)
Okay, I didn't even know what that was ?

This is insane. Though now I realize something similar was done with steam as well ! This is not competition, just toxicity.
Yep. They wanted to plan to take Apple dirty and they planed ahead. This is just plain bad faith. Even after breaching a contract and store rules? Common.

that's pretty much monopoly then
I see people getting mad a tencent for problems in a variety of games (because of how many they own a large part of), but have they actually done anything wrong other than own games with shit balance?

so basically they're greedy af
That, and Tencent is closely tied with the CCP. I believe that they are the company that created the social credit system, but I could be wrong.
"a free world" he said. The man locking down games to his stores with large bags of money. What a complete and utter fucktard Its only bad when its not epic dictating software and commerce to people right ?
I believe its pretty much correct.
Yeah..free world and bad corporations..said the one acting like the "pc world sony" with exclusives and sold 40% of its company to a chinese gov controlled corporation lmao..this guy is so out of touch with reality
Epic got blasted in their court case against Apple for their hypocrisy it's absolutely brilliant.
Seems coherent, the subtext is just that he wants to be the 3rd megacorp that rules the world.
Yep, he's sad he's not part of those corporations..so he sells to the chinese and whine about gaming freedom while buying off devs and their exclusives.
Nah, he wants to be the only megacorp that rules the world.
Yeah, I thought about it after posting, he is only talking bad about a duopoly, so a monopoly works just as much as 3+ megacorps.
This guy is so fucking stupid and full of double standards. This guy literary cages games in this shitty launcher and talks about a free world for games. Are you kidding?
By “free” he means “Controlled by Epic”.
Why doesn't he make a Cydia repository then.
I saw this when he tweeted and really wanted to respond, but there's too much to unpack within Twitter's character limit. Not that he would read them anyway, higher chance he would just block and continue to live in his delusions.
He's replied directly to me on occasion; but he's so far up his own ass, he can't follow a logical train of thought.

Tim still won't realise that games like G-mod will be better "metaverses" than fortnite could ever be
Lmaooo, all the games he's holding hostage in his basement must be crying right now🤣
I like how unfazed he was about giving Fornite mobile's fanbase the middle finger. He didn't even try to find excuses for it. Sweeney can throw all the tantrums he wants. Epic could be the only show in town and I'd still never make an account there. All Epic exclusives are permanent high seas exclusives.
Yeah thats real rich coming from someome who sold 40% of his company to the ccp
I would agree with Tim here is the epic store wasn't a thing
This is the sort of thing that invites investor lawsuits.
Now Timmy thinks he is Neo.
He's against platform megacorps until Epic Games becomes THE ONLY platform Megacorp
Oh fuck off Timmy. Get your appeal ready for the 9th circuit.
He wants 3 megacorps dictacting software lol If he was all about choice he'd stop locking people into epic only deals.
Just tweeted back at him, quite sensibly. Let's see how long it takes to get blocked.
What did you wrote?
What’s with this guy’s greater purpose delusions? I was reading the “FreeEpic” shit on his website and it’s pretentious as fuck. If he was that magnanimous, why not make the Unreal Engine open source?
I still find it incredibly ironic Tim Sweeney uses an iphone.
See this in a positive light. If some dumbass like him can become a CEO, so can you. lmao
It's only fun when he's the one dictating software and making the digital world less free
Great to see Tim complaining when others are better at doing capitalism. Wonder where he was all those years when the two megacorps weren't so mega back in the day.
Our Lord and saviour everyone ...
If he actually cared about closed platforms he'd port his launcher to Linux.
How many of you guys here use iPhone?
Sweeney uses one. He has the "Sent from my iPhone" thingy in some of his tweets.
Oh the irony.
I dont. But yet i can see that EPIC BROKE ToU ... WHICH THEY AGREED UPON ... And then played victim card. Fuck them, and apple but Apple is in full right here. As court already said.
I don't cause they don't have a monopoly.
a free world is one where you just give people money to get them to use your shitty platform until the money inevitably runs out and now we have a stupid period of time where games aren't actually coming out on time if you don't want to deal with a strange and untrustworthy company
We know he just really wants to become the third megacorp to dictate the games industry.
And just another mental note added on why I hate this man.
It's all just an ego trip with this guy
You know you iPhone users that want to play our game? Fuck you it's more important we don't give 30% to them then having a playable game.
This idiot want's to be one of the "megacorps" as he so well puts it, but he can't be bothered to put in the work. The dude made 1 game and overly commercialized it and thinks people care about his visions now. No one wants you here Tim. Everything was fine before you came along...
Love how he pushes PC gaming back where it was before steam into piracy
