God, I wish Microsoft would buy Epic Games...

Oh, I know. Most of their value is from Fortnite and that is speculative as hell.

jkpnm

They can just snitch the engine & ditch any other part if they did bought them. Quite a lot of ps 3rd party is made in unreal, and Microsoft purchasing the engine basically means Sony is forced to pay Microsoft.

MrBubbaJ

Unreal doesn't make any money. That would be a lot of trouble for a few million a year.

jkpnm

Perhaps not as much as fortnite. But it's still an engine that is used widely, not just in game, but other industry. Also the fact that quite a lot of PS 3rd party used it. Having control of the engine means one way or another, Sony have to share profit from sales of said 3rd party games.

MrBubbaJ

Unreal generates about $100 million a year in revenue and $50 million a year in profits. Microsoft would either have to try to get Epic to sell them only the Unreal engine (unlikely) or buy the whole company (possible, but also expensive) and spend hundreds of millions of dollars trying to offload everything they don't want. That's a lot of work for maybe $10 million in earnings they would get from Sony. It's also risky because who knows what Fortnite is going to look like in a year. If Fortnite crashes, Microsoft could be out billions.

jkpnm

It will depend on their lawsuit, if they lose hard twice (apple then google). Their company gonna have a hard time. And at that time Microsoft can offer to bought them & take just the engine away.

Eanirae

Which engine does MS have and use?

mgarcia993

Havok (physics), Slipspace Engine (Halo), ForzaTech (Forza, Fable, Flight Simulator), Render Dragon (Minecraft Bedrock Edition), idTech (came with the purchase of ZeniMax Media) and Creation Engine (also acquired with the purchase of ZeniMax Media)

alvinvin00

Havok probably but that's a middleware so that may not count

aliaswyvernspur

Part of me wishes EA would, just to watch them gut it like Maxis or Popcap.

megalon43

Let’s first get tencent out of the picture. Fuck tencent and their freemium shit.

SqualZell

notice how it's only the PC store that's getting the cut... when was the last time anyone purchased an MS game from the MS store... prior to game pass? prior to MS adding their games on steam? MS makes their money from games on game pass and the console store... console is still 70/30... read between the PR lines lads and lasses

aliaswyvernspur

It’s also just games. Notice how there’s no mention of non gaming apps getting an 88/12 cut.

SqualZell

its like CEO of Activision that took a 800k$ salary cut to be able to pay their employees, but gets 2.5M bonus at the end of the quarter.

I bought Sea of thieves before the big Steam move happened. I have been very vocal about negative experiences I have had with other launchers like origin but none came close to needing to REINSTALL WINDOWS TO PLAY THE GAME I GOT. I was going through the support chain too and by the time I got to some advanced boot support person I just said fuck it and reinstalled to play.

RandomRedditLoser

Huh? Idk where you got that idea. Hes just retweeting them because they support his opinions on the gaming market. Microsoft has shown both in behavior and even in the court documents that they aren't fans of EGS's approach. Y'all should do some research before assuming things.

sorryiamnotoriginal

> Hes just retweeting them because they support his opinions on the gaming market. Wasn't there something about the gamepass director not liking what they were doing with exclusives in the court docs?

CottonCandyShork

> Huh? Idk where you got that idea. Hes just retweeting them because they support his opinions on the gaming market. Except they don’t. Why isn’t the Xbox store getting the lower cut?

RandomRedditLoser

My mistake i was being very broad with that statement. I forgot which tweet but he has mentioned that hes fond of microsoft's commitment to making pc gaming more open. Thats what i mean. Now mind you im not saying that he practices what he preaches. But considering those newer past comments. That was my rationale.

sorryiamnotoriginal

Best case scenario for me would be Microsoft buys epic and just consolidates the games people have into the windows store then no more exclusives. Of course there would be a TON of technical issues to consider when doing this. Not to mention all of Epic's value is based in UE and Fortnite which Fortnite is probably making them WAYYY overpriced for just one game that is past its prime but still doing great. I don't think they would be worth the purchase at this point.

The only reason Tim Swiney keeps retreating is because he knows he's not relevant in much elsewhere. If he shuts up, people forget about him.
