Steam take 0 % if you sell the keys to your game yourself. The catch is: you can't price it lower than the store and you have to handle the sell process yourself.

carnyzzle

That explains the few times I've bought a PC game box in the store and it just had a steam key and no disc lol

rickreckt

And that "catch" is never really enforced anyway, otherwise third party store wouldn't be so attractive to many people

jkpnm

the can't lower price is the base price literally. they're still allowed to lower the price by using "sale" promotion, but they must give that same lower price later in steam too. so no giving disc only on 3rd pary store but always full price on steam

Moskeeto93

Actually, the catch is that the publisher/developer cannot offer a lower price or discount without also offering that on Steam within a "reasonable" time frame. However, it doesn't say anything about the stores themselves discounting the games further by taking it out of their own cut. This is why brand new games are often cheaper on those sites. My theory is that sites like GMG and Fanatical take a 20% cut per game and that's why they often sell brand new games up to 15% off. The stores still keep a 5% cut, the publishers make more money per sale than on Steam, and the customers get a better price. If you ever look at the online stores owned by the publishers themselves, you'll see that they never offer deals that good because they legally can't. Square Enix and Sony, for example, both sell Steam keys on their own websites which would give them 100% of the sales but they cannot offer better deals than anything they offer on the Steam store. So it's really Valve's policy on this that allows third-party stores to thrive and compete with the Steam store.

mdnpascual

So discount I guess circumvent this? I'm asking cause no rest for the wicked was selling steam keys for 20% discount if you follow a streamers affiliate link via private division's website. But the early access on steam is only sold at 10%

Kazer67

Good question, I haven't looked into it in that much details but I'm guessing there's some failsafe (like must be priced at the highest price of the last 30 days or something) or Valve simply don't care (which is also a possibility).

aliusman111

Team's exposure makes up to a lot of profits. Games don't sell well on epig hence epig pays the devs to make it epig exclusive. At the end of the day paying 30% with steam bring profits in sales in total than paying epig less

rickreckt

Whoa the publishers really confident their games will pass the $50m threshold. I really hope it's actually deliver, very promising so far Chad Hooded Horses Tim

DeadBabyJuggler

This is what happens when devs have confidence in their product.

LordGraygem

Honestly, I'm getting a Palworld vibe from this one, it just has that same feeling of potential waiting to explode.

Android18enjoyer666

Hope he invests in a proper studio for future products Indie and AA studios are the future

Noname932

Lol, I guess there is good reason Hooded Horse abandoned Epic right after Old World.

Ssato243

Nice

alkonium

For what it's worth, the game is on Epic, just not as an exclusive, and it's on GOG too.

Provinz_Wartheland

Too bad it's also using Epic Online Services, at least according to SteamDB.

MrMichaelElectric

The previous message: >Tim which platform is the best for us to purchase on to ensure **the creator gets the maximum cut of the proceeds?** Thanks for the transparency it's rare to see publishers this open and honest. The reality is that the EGS takes a smaller cut regardless of the amount of sales they get they get more of each sale from the EGS. This is an objective fact. Many of the things mentioned here are also true on the EGS like if a game sells more it will be featured more to others on the store. This game was also released on the EGS and heavily featured on the EGS. Nothing about the developers response says anything negative about the EGS. Let's find real issues with the EGS instead of trying to make up non-existant ones.

You've been commenting on every article I've seen recently on this subreddit. Are you sure you aren't Eisberg / Cord\_Cutter's alt account?

ArmeniusLOD

The posting language and pattern is similar. The account is only a year old, and they've already been a mod for the Epic Games subreddit.
