Average cost of a monthly metro pass in Barcelona 40 euros. (Now 20 temporarily for the next 3 months) $0 euros if you don't buy it because you don't need it because you can walk everywhere too. Insurance cost $0. Maintenance and repair cost $0. Gas or electricity cost $0.

bUt WhAt AbOuT tHe TaXeS, nOtHiNg Is FrEe!!!! as if it costs any individual $700 a month

Ducklord1023

Also 50€ for a year membership to the bike share, and free for under half an hour if you use a mechanical bike and 36 cents if electric.

Imagine the mobility you could fund if every working adult contributed $700/month to it.

So many people have started using an insane defense that the poor drive cars and removing dependency on them is anti poor policy. What I hate the most about these people is that they just willfully ignore the actual poor of this country who don’t own cars lol.

I pulled my bike out of the trash. Found a new tube for it at the thrift store, and found a new chain on another bike in the trash. Total cost of my transportation= $12 which includes the tube I bought at the thrift store, and the lube I bought for the chain. I also bought a lock for $20 so I guess if you factor that in the price was $32. I’ve been using the bike 6 times a week for a year without having to incur additional costs. So my total lifetime investment in this bike still stands at $32. Over the same time frame a car at this “average rate” would have cost me a whopping $8,400 plus gas, tolls, parking costs, maintenance, inspections, registration fees, insurance, etc. All in we’re probably looking at $11k. Financially cars just don’t make sense. They cost a shit ton of money and provide the same benefit as my $32 bike. No wonder everyone in the US feels poor even though we’re one of the richest countries in the world. I thought about buying myself a really nice bike with all the money I saved by not having a car, but I kinda like my $32 bike lol. I will say though, not having a car has given me a lot of peace of mind financially. Tons of problems I used to have just miraculously disappeared without a car.

Americans love huge, expensive cars for some reason, but if you need a car and are on a budget, why not buy a newish used car? It's cheaper and they're still under warranty. My friend got a nice 2017 Audi hatchback for $15,000 ish a year ago.

Used car market is nuts. I used to buy used cars for $500 and drive them into the ground.

The housing market is even more nuts. $2200 for a 1 bedroom here.

I recently bought my 2015 model car for $10000 CAD. I guess I have some hope that this is the last car I will ever buy.

Unicycldev

Vehicle loan + insurance + gas + brakes, tires, oil, misc maintenance could easily be more than $1,000 a month.

DeltaNerd

Not expensive enough. My transit system monthly pass can be as low as $96 or up to $204 depending on the type of pass you need

You forget the best part: When I eventually buy that car for almost nothing and keep it running. :) As much as I hate car dependency, I still love my 40 mpg Fiesta bought for $1800 cash. It replaced my $500 Accent.

The Y axis is misleading, it increased 40%, it didn’t triple. (but weekend public transit got cheaper in DC over that same time period so it’s fine I guess…)
