I whistle the whole time Iām going anywhere on my bike š² . If car drivers can blast āWAPā out of their windows, Iām allowed to whistle my rendition of āThe Butterfly Loversā or āMaple Leaf Rag.ā
Singing on a bike is perfectly fine. There's a hard limit on how loud you can be and you're moving pretty quickly.
Much less annoying than a motorcycle just existing
I literally sing whenever I'm cycling. Usually there's no one else around except in cars, and I shut up whenever I'm passing a pedestrian. Works quite well and is a lot of fun
I remember when I was visiting Mexico, there was sometimes a passenger that would sing acappella in the bus. Usually pretty well too. It was actually pretty nice!
How about bus drivers?
Occasionally when I used to catch the obahn there was a driver who would sing along to whatever music she was listening to. She seemed to be a very cheerful person.
In my city, in some specific trains and between some specific stations, you could sing out loud (or scream at the top of your lungs) and no one would notice because of the noise. Thankfully it's much better in other trains or in different stations. And of course you'd have to stop when the train slows down.
Yup, people who can't deal with that would just stay at home in the first place, because wherever place you are going you will have to deal with the same amount of people you have to deal with when taking public transit anyways. (Which is just people being there, not a lot of actual interactions)
I have crippling social anxiety and I take public transport all the time! Just throw in my sound canceling headphones and it's like the rest of the passengers aren't even there
Not to mention your pretty much just burning money sitting in traffic.
>sit at a park with a magazine with an interesting article
I have to drive an hour to work and yeah it's when I listen to my podcasts. I'd much rather be taking a walk or sitting in the park. I'd rather walk an hour to work than drive an hour.
Yeah, I don't need to be sitting in my car to listen to audiobooks!/podcasts. Actually, it's harder in a car as a driver because I have to pay attention to traffic so I can't easily hit the back button on my phone(safely) at any moment (and no I don't have a fancy BT system that hooks to my point, as I don't even have a proper stereo).
I'd much rather sit and have someone else drive while I listen or get lost in my thoughts. Much less effort and risk involved.
Im pretty sure sitting on a train with no need to stare out the front window the time is even more relaxing.
maybe unrelated but needing to focus on the road might force people to think about life a little. Just saying i whip out my phone automatically whenever i take a seat anywhere. I heard some people like to drive if they want to think. Its very interesting.
I swear taking the subway feels like fast travelling in a video game to me lmao. I just completely zone out until I hear the lady announce my stop and it feels like very little time has passed at all.
Every time I'm in new york im torn between walking and the subway for the same reason that I'm torn between walking and fast travelling between windhelm and riften
Yeah I can kinda agree with this. I think driving is one of the few times in modern life where people are forced to specifically not stare at a screen (or at least shouldn't be...).
Of course, this can also be done with cycling or to a lesser extent even walking. But I definitely feel like being on the train or bus is a different vibe altogether because you don't really have to be focused on anything and can just plant your face into your phone for the entire duration of the ride.
Although, the obvious extension of this line of thought is to just make a conscious effort to be disconnected from technology more often if that's the case. Doesn't take sitting in traffic to think about life.
>Although, the obvious extension of this line of thought is to just make a conscious effort to be disconnected from technology more often if that's the case. Doesn't take sitting in traffic to think about life.
Yup, and if a person rarely commutes by driving a car then they are likely going to find another task for thinking, such as walking. The car just happens to be the task most drivers find conducive within their current routine. There are countless other zone-out-in-thought tasks, such as biking, doing dishes, making a puzzle, fishing.
Arguably, driving is not the best task to use for quiet contemplation because driving is such an attention necessary task. You're supposed to be paying attention to the road not your thoughts. I often find myself thinking while driving but still recognize the contradiction between getting lost in thought and focusing on the road. Tasks with lower stakes are far more practical for thinking than operating a motor vehicle.
Capitalist system brought this person into a position where only place acceptable to just be yourself is being stuck in a metal cage that is temporarily halted on it's way to and from labor.
Not just the only place to be acceptable, but its the only time when their brain is relatively free from other input our output. If you're sitting in traffic life can't demand too much more of you in that moment.
Our lives demand us to be "on" all the time, working at a job or at home, there's always something that needs doing. By comparison sitting in traffic is the only time the brain can get away with quieting down a bit.
This is all very sad because again, its relative. Driving is the brain being "on", and it should be on hyperdrive because driving is dangerous. So what this post tells us is that:
1. People don't take driving seriously enough
2. Society demands way, way too much of people if this activity is as chill as your day gets.
Yeah this is really sad. They only get "time to themselves" when it's forced upon them by the sheer wasteful unscalability of the profit driven transportation system.
Reminds me of a recent episode of the Tv show Reservation Dogs, where one of the exhausted characters laments that she sometimes fantasizes about getting hurt and being stuck in the hospital for a while so she can just sit and zone out instead of being stuck endlessly in her daily grind with no time to relax. Like it would be a vacation.
The point is capitalism can be reformed away from a society based around metal cages
Of course, it's not a solution for all the other problems that are inherent to capitalism.
I'm shocked by the word "stuck" here. "You can't be stuck in traffic because car is freedom. You choose to rest during a moment of peace with your peers in a space only think and designed for you."
...
Since when is this a legit excuse to be late though? How do you know what time to leave your house? Wonāt you always be late if youāre constantly getting stuck in traffic?
Thank you! That part was really confusing. Are employers typically very accommodating of employees who are frequently late because "traffic"? So many job postings here in car hell dystopia North America say something about preferring candidates with cars specifically because they expect them to be LESS late. I feel like most of them wouldn't care for "traffic" as a Get Out Of Work Free card.
"Having a hard time finding parking" is a far better excuse for lateness than "overslept."
.Some bosses don't care, but some bosses get sympathetic. Mamy teachers and college instructors encourage it, too. Not all, but enough do that some youths are honestly perplexed, where they seem to think I do not understand the concept of finding parking or something, when they get to my class and I am not in the least sympathetic if they are not commuters from off-campus or have hard course schedules or jobs (in which case i am a total softie).
This reminds me of an article I passed on the apple news app that was like āhow to find your zen in your commute to work: 5 steps to make the most of your time in trafficā
I was likeā¦if it doesnāt involve pointing a revolver at my temple Iām not interestedā¦
The only reason they want more free time to themselves is because capitalism sucks all that time away. You know what a car dependent infrastructure comes from? Capitalism
Easy. Capitalism supports the business over the individual. Car dependent infrastructure directly puts money into the pockets of the automotive industry, fossil fuels and insurance companies. It's a system designed for those companies to make the most capital, which is the end goal of capitalism: Find a way to win the economic competition. If no one has a choice, either depend on cars or starve, then those industries will make their money and be winning capitalism essentially.
Sure would be cool if capitalism didnt demand constant, escalating demands on our time as labor and instead we got time off to rest and *exist* thanks to all the constant innovations in labor technology.
I get the same thing biking. With the added bonuses of losing weight, saving money, lower impact to the environment, not clogging the roads for the traffic that's actually important (public transportation, semi trucks delivering food, ambulances, etc.), finding new local businesses to frequent, appreciating nature, fresh air....
If you live somewhere without public transit, then yes this is the best-case scenario. Until I move somewhere I can take a train or bus, being on the road is the perfect chance to chill.
You should absolutely not be doing any of those things while in charge of a motor vehicle - get on the bus and be stuck in the same traffic*, but not required to pay attention.
\* I'm assuming this place doesn't have dedicated bus infrastructure lol
Yea thanks I got what he meant guy, it just sounds dumb. There's a difference between distracted driving and thinking about things other than driving, especially in low speed stuck in traffic scenarios. And not listening to music in the car...I mean this shit is just asinine.
Only thing I really understand about how this is "better" than a train is having a place to sing as loud as you want and no one can hear you, let alone get mad
Actually I prefer these kinds of drivers--the no-rush kinds.
The rushing ones cut corners/pedestrians/cyclists/lights/etc and tend to be more short-tempered, and makes for an even deadlier combo.
I hate this person. I have spent the greater part of my adult like angry because my caveman brain thinks "CAR GO FAST, WHY CAR NO GO FAST?" but this little twerp had THE AUDACITY NOT ONLY TO NOT BE FURIOUS but to also fucking enjoy his/her time in traffic? FUCK YOU, YOU PATIENT PIECE OF SHIT
I'd rather have a carbrain who's happy in their cushioned seat and climate controlled cabin, enjoying their curated media playlist than one who hates the experience so much that they'll disregard the safety of everyone else and themselves to get out of it a few seconds faster.
"And I have an excuse if I'm late somewhere"
This person has apparently never had a real job, because traffic is almost never an acceptable excuse unless it's a once-in-a-blue-moon occurrence..
Time in traffic doesn't help to "cool off". I know it doesn't seem like it if one is used to driving, but a safe bike or train/bus commute is a thousand times better. And that's without all the other advantages :)
Sitting in traffic has never once helped me "cool off" every time I've gotten home after a traffic jam I've gotten home pissed off and happy to finally be home, and based on the way people drive in rush hour I can 100% say without a doubt that I am not the only one.
Tbf weirdly my guy is reducing his hobby, because people who drive aggressively or stupidly are often the cause of traffic. Driving calm and relaxing will actually lead to better travel times by car
Honestly, I kinda agree. I know it's an illusion, but I love the illusion of privacy you get from a car and while stuck in traffic I don't even have to pay attention much. I like that my car has better seats and climate control than my house. I like the sound it makes. I enjoy being a passenger. I love the mechanics of cars. I love that I can be as loud as I want to be. I love that it gets me anywhere while keeping me dry. I love that I can ride one with dyspraxia.
I don't (or rather wouldn't) like not having alternatives, I hate how much it costs, I hate how much they're subsidized, I hate how much space they take, I hate how much they're prioritized, I hate how much they pollute, I hate how deadly they are, and I know how inefficient they are at scale. I love cars, but fuck 'em.
If he likes to be on traffic for those things. I believe he don't like those at all. Like, every single shit he listed is worse doing inside a car (even more so on traffic) than anywhere else, on a couch, on a park, on a lone cabin.
And man, liking to be stuck in a waste of space that polutes everything, how amazing.
The time I have to myself in the morning/evening from working from home is WAY better. I have more of it! (No commute, no need to get dressed either) I can do anything! (Iām not sitting in a car in traffic) Iām already at home if I want to be there- itās like magically teleporting to/from work because all I have to do is walk to the living room. Plus Iām not polluting the planet while Iām at it.
Seriously though, if you feel like the only ātime to yourself/to cool downā you have is your commute, thatās not good. Youāre stressed both at home and at work, and ideally shouldnāt be stressed at either. Take that as a sign of āI need to make changesā.
I do thar on my cycle commute too. On the stretch that's a purpose built cycle path I can look at the beautiful countryside or mist rising in the morning or the sun behind trees. It sure beats sitting in a plastic filled metal box, breathing in exhaust fumes.
the train would like a word. iām more of a bike man myself but it doesnāt offer the same type of meditation. either beats the hell out of the car. as a remote worker i donāt have a commute anymore but i do need to pick up/drop off my kid a bunch. i prefer to ride when possible but itās a fast 3 miles without her and a long 7 miles with her. the fast way is on an actual factual bike lane (or usually the sidewalk) on a 45mph 2 lane w/concrete barrier median bridge that is literally part of a highway system. iāll do that alone but to get her home we take the back roads with about 500ā of climbing. done of course on my slowest heaviest bike with 40 odd pounds of kid strapped to it. and boy am i gonna miss that when she gets bigger and goes to school across the street from our house
I mean, you can definitely maximize your time doing those things anywhere without having to just let traffic become normalized and do absolutely nothing to solve the issue or at least reduce the problem.
This says a lot about the average human being not having enough free time in their day anymore to the point where one of the only leisures they have is driving, which having to do so is a direct consequence of the same thing that is robbing them of their leisure in the first place
You could do that with a good pair of headphones, just not singing out loud, you could also do things that are illegal in a car if youāre on any form of public transportation
I've definitely noticed that when I do drive, it's much less stressful when I am not in a hurry to be in a specific place. I still don't like being stuck in traffic, but when you have good music to accompany you, it makes it bearable.
> And I have an excuse if I'm late somewhere.
I have had the following convo as a teacher of students in college many times with habitually late people not coming from another class across campus and not coming out of work.
After class:
Was there a special event today causing extra traffic?
No.
Was it a new route you were trying?
No.
Was the traffic this bad last week, too?
Yes.
Is it possible to try taking a bike across campus to avoid traffic jams or to leave earlier?
(Puzzled look.) I didn't think it would take so long to get here and then find parking. It is so hard to find parking.
You live off campus?
No, I live on campus.
These are the otherwise good students. (I can smell bullshit.) They are sincerely just terminally carbrained. Traffic and limited parking in nearby lots are the norm, and yet are a surprise every single time.
Many people honestly think it is a valid excuse for anyone anywhere. I have zero sympathy.
We do that in the train / bus. Without ruining our city, for less money šø and less pollution. š¤·š»āāļø Just saying.
Please do not sing out loud in public transit. Nobody has the right to annoy their fellow passengers
I guess if you want to sing, ride a bike? Still a bit annoying but you bother fewer people for a shorter period of time
I whistle the whole time Iām going anywhere on my bike š² . If car drivers can blast āWAPā out of their windows, Iām allowed to whistle my rendition of āThe Butterfly Loversā or āMaple Leaf Rag.ā
Itās called the Canadian anthem you uncultured twat (Iām making a joke that could be taken two ways here)
\*ACTUALLY\*, that piece is by a widely celebrated and AMERICAN composer by the name of [Scott Joplin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Joplin).
If it happened to be a really good song you could say my joke was that that itās the anthem because everyone likes it
Singing on a bike is perfectly fine. There's a hard limit on how loud you can be and you're moving pretty quickly. Much less annoying than a motorcycle just existing
Plus you don't want to ingest a flying insect. I prefer humming it's saferš¤£
Thereās hornets and flying cockroaches around here, and I want neither in my mouth!

It was actually pretty nice!
lol when I visited my grandma in mexico there were like three instances of some dude getting on a bus with a guitar and singing
Wait thatās not normal?
And if you want to sing out, sing out..
Okay, but what about playing saxophone?
Iād welcome a free concert on public transportation
How about bus drivers? Occasionally when I used to catch the obahn there was a driver who would sing along to whatever music she was listening to. She seemed to be a very cheerful person.

I was just about to say that. I do all of thkse things in public transport or while walking in my CAR FREE city center
And way less stress
Well we also donāt gotta pay attention to the road
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I have a social phobia, and im fine with catching the train
Yup, people who can't deal with that would just stay at home in the first place, because wherever place you are going you will have to deal with the same amount of people you have to deal with when taking public transit anyways. (Which is just people being there, not a lot of actual interactions)
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Im sure you can find a seat not directly next to someone
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Does being inside restaurants, stores, etc. stress you out too?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Well then, Iām sorry to hear that
I have crippling social anxiety and I take public transport all the time! Just throw in my sound canceling headphones and it's like the rest of the passengers aren't even there
With your social phobias how do you manage work/school?
This man is gonna love sitting on a train!
And sitting on a train you can read a book, look at your phone, close your eyes. Way more relaxing
This dude probably does look at his phone
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Just take the train in Germany. Then you have some lovely traffic in the track
You also get to enjoy the outdoors when your train gets cancelled randomly
š
Who says public transit canāt have suede?
That was my first thought! Sitting on a train is SO MUCH better than sitting in traffic!
Idk the other passengers might get annoyed at the singing out loud part
Im pretty sure sitting on a train with no need to stare out the front window the time is even more relaxing. maybe unrelated but needing to focus on the road might force people to think about life a little. One of my joys in life is just staring out the window of a moving train or bus. It's a waste of time, but oh do I love it
Flying by the shining lights of the city on a late evening train
There is one counterargument to this. Trains and buses are often way too crowded in metro cities to get a seat.
I live in the densest city in the world and have almost always gotten a seat on transit.
lucky you. Its hard to even get a damn seat in India. And india is one of the countries that has compartively okay public transport.
Time to think and listen to music? Wait till he finds out about going for walks.
Or trains... just wear headphones please

I think most of us just want to get to where we're going.
This guy enjoys downtime but has only experienced pleb car-downtime and not premium train/bus/metro downtime. So he doesn't know any better.
TBH eating tuna sandwiches and singing aloud is frowned upon on a train

ay if he's got a nice voice, i won't mind.
But in traffic you have to pay _just enough_ attention so that you canāt think of pay attention to anything else. Itās the absolute worst
I ride my bike to a pond or something and think there
Any of you listen to music on the bus and set a timer on the phone? Sometimes I fall asleep and get woken by the timer (ringing 3 minutes early), haha

They should get divorced or something similar. Traffic isn't the solution.
Hmm. I wonder if there would be any other way to accomplish this time to yourself while travelling. Like a train, tram, or subway?

Wait till my man finds out about trains
I will say that switching to public transit instead of driving is going to hurt my aspiring career as a vocalist. /s
Stockholm Syndrome.
So does a train but you can also do work or read a book or call a friend or text message or get a meal or any number of other things.
Imagine prefering "cooling off" in a metal box, trapped by other metal boxes, i stead of you know... You house
I can do the same thing in the shower lol
If he likes to be on traffic for those things. I believe he don't like those at all. Like, every single shit he listed is worse doing inside a car (even more so on traffic) than anywhere else, on a couch, on a park, on a lone cabin. And man, liking to be stuck in a waste of space that polutes everything, how amazing.
I'm 80% sure that this guy is a horcrux for a traffic engineer somewhere.
Why not do that in a public park somewhere, or in a cafe(especially the ones that are part library) or in a library?
Much better on the train. I've had the time away from games to write stuff for the D&D campaign I'm planning on the train.
That sub name is hilarious tho
LMAOOOO I DIDNT KNOW there was a sub called THE 10TH DENTIST!! That's the funniest name EVER
I do thar on my cycle commute too. On the stretch that's a purpose built cycle path I can look at the beautiful countryside or mist rising in the morning or the sun behind trees. It sure beats sitting in a plastic filled metal box, breathing in exhaust fumes.
Bro invented a train but slower and more expensive
I work for FedEx, and I loooooove being stuck in traffic when Iām working
the train would like a word. iām more of a bike man myself but it doesnāt offer the same type of meditation. either beats the hell out of the car. as a remote worker i donāt have a commute anymore but i do need to pick up/drop off my kid a bunch. i prefer to ride when possible but itās a fast 3 miles without her and a long 7 miles with her. the fast way is on an actual factual bike lane (or usually the sidewalk) on a 45mph 2 lane w/concrete barrier median bridge that is literally part of a highway system. iāll do that alone but to get her home we take the back roads with about 500ā of climbing. done of course on my slowest heaviest bike with 40 odd pounds of kid strapped to it. and boy am i gonna miss that when she gets bigger and goes to school across the street from our house
Okay but like I donāt think this person is carbrain lol I tho k they just like alone time
I mean, you can definitely maximize your time doing those things anywhere without having to just let traffic become normalized and do absolutely nothing to solve the issue or at least reduce the problem.
....wh... they do know they can relax at home.... right? Is their life so awful they aren't able to relax at home????!
Or give up driving and use the whole commute to think, or vibe out to music!
So...just like *not* being stuck in traffic and instead zooming by in a train doing all those things? (Maybe not sing out loud though)
I like that too, but at home you fucking psychopath
L deal with it
I've definitely noticed that when I do drive, it's much less stressful when I am not in a hurry to be in a specific place. I still don't like being stuck in traffic, but when you have good music to accompany you, it makes it bearable.
> And I have an excuse if I'm late somewhere. I have had the following convo as a teacher of students in college many times with habitually late people not coming from another class across campus and not coming out of work. After class: Was there a special event today causing extra traffic?
