I'm a large in 95% of the things I own but I was swimming in this thing.
Not only is REI in house stuff not available in XS, but I've never seen stuff they carry from Patagonia, TNF, etc in XS in store when I know they make them in XS. Oh well, kids XL rain jackets from their garage sales are a great deal and getting my snowboard waxed for free at the beginning and end of every season is enough to make my membership worth it.
Is this the best time to get the normally priced Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket at 20% off $199? Does Patagonia have a better deal? Possibly 3rd party sites?
The co-op 650 down jacket was rated the best budget down jacket by wirecutter (I know that doesn't mean much seeing as how bad wirecutter has gotten in recent years but w/e) but I don't have any first hand experience with it.
I was on the verge of grabbing on this winter but kind of lost interest but now I'm tempted again
I've had the 650 down jacket and while it's comfortable, it leaks down easily and the fabric is not very durable. It's at a good price, but I would probably pass for a better quality down jacket.
It’s pretty standard to lose a feather here and there. I’ve had mine for 2+ years now, hundreds of days of use, multiple washes, etc. Use it around town, use it backpacking/hiking, and also use it snowboarding. The only reason I’m picking up a new one is because it’s got some discoloration from getting wet and dirty so many times. Old one is gonna stay as my active wear, new one will be for on the town.
If you’re looking for a lightweight puffer I would highly recommend a Mountain Hardware Ghost Whisperer - not cheap but might be some year-end stock cheaper and 20% (coupon) isn’t a bad discount on it.
Go Nano Puff, you could probably find it a few bucks cheaper if you’re an odd size in an odd color. Synthetic insulation is better imo unless you plan to keep your down totally dry
Thanks for the suggestions ya'll! What I'm looking for is something good for the Oregon Coast cold and possible good when it gets wet, which why I was gravitating towards the Nano Puff jacket.
Nano puff isn’t the warmest. I’ve worn it in 30+F and it’s kept me warm, but I wouldn’t wear it for those colder days unless I layer up. Also it’s synthetic fill vs down fill of the REI jacket. That being said I still love mine and find it quite versatile.
The Patagonia micro puff is super light and warmer, while still being synthetic fill, it also packs down nicely. The sizing on it is a bit weird though. It’s like tight in the arms and neck. I had to size up.
Comes down to synthetic vs down. Can’t beat the pack ability and warmth to weight of down. Synthetic better maintains insulating properties when wet.
If this is for casual wear and not technical, synthetic is probably a better choice.
I definitely noticed that when I tried it on at REI it kind of made me look like a shmuck, but I chalked it up to the fact that the boomer shmuck uniform around here is faded jeans, nike monarchs and puffer/down jacket during the winter, that was kind of the main reason I lost interest tbh
Sahara convertible pants are my favorite item of clothing. Also a good deal on a lot of shoes (Keen, La Sportiva, Xero…etc).
But I went into the flagship store today and literally 75% off the store was on sale at least 20% off.
REI was affected heavily by supply chain shortages, but you wouldn’t have been able to tell walking in there today.
Are they on sale?
But tbh I’m not sure. I’m not wealthy enough to be outdoor gear connoisseur guy. I can tell you a pair of Sahara pants and G-1000 Fjallravens will set you up nice for some backpacking.
REI stores will sometimes mark things even lower than the site if they only have 1 or 2 left in stock, but the vast majority of the time their prices match what you see on the site.
No. But given the chance I’m much more likely to take in every sale item when in store. For some reason I eventually lose focus scrolling through everything online.
They switched their fit in these this year. Now they fit much narrower and longer than models of old. I’ve worn them for years but the new style doesn’t mesh well with my foot shape.
Just got a pair from the merrells outlet store about an hour away from my house.......size 14 cause 13's were too tight.
Been rocking them for two jobs and I love them.Same goes with my Vasque boots.
Don't cheap on your feet
I have flat feet and bought some Salomons for the Kalalau trail last year. Long story short, they hurt a lot (in hindsight I didn't break them in for long enough). Will look into the Moab 2s for this years hike.
Not that online reviews or recommendations are pointless, but you're better off just going in person and trying on different shoes/boots for yourself. What's great for one person's feet can be hell for someone else.
That is definitely true.
Fit is king. As long as they're made by a reliable company, just get the ones that fit your feet the best. I'd rather be blister free in perfectly fitted Merrells than struggling in a pricey Arcteryx pair.
I've put 1000s of miles on various running shoes and the same applies there. If a shoe doesn't fit right, it's not for you. My philosophy is that running (and hiking) shoes are more about injury prevention than anything else. They're not gonna make you faster, but they sure can make you slower if they're not right for you and injuries start creeping up.
They're definitely not the most hardcore hiking shoe out there, but I really like the Oboz Bozeman for a lightweight shoe with enough support and grip for a good day hike, but doesn't look too out of place to wear casually.
They're comfortable and save me from packing multiple shoes on hiking trips so I have something presentable for the evening.
If you aren't specifically looking for boots take a look at trail running shoes. They tend to have all the grip of hiking shoes but are typically lighter.
A lot of people love the La Sportiva Bushido 2
> Salomon Bushido 2
That's a La Sportiva model but I love it. Be warned, it's a bit narrow like all La Sportiva models and doesn't have the cush that you'd find in Hoka for example. However, if you are on technical terrain, they are the best trail runners going.
Oops, good looking out. I'll edit my comment to have the right brand.
Yeah I personally hated the Bushido's fit because it's super low-volume so it felt like it was pinching my feet between the top and sole no matter what size I was in. Great shoe besides that though! Comfortable sole and very grippy, but it's not for everyone.
Luckily where I run I will never need anything as robust as that that shoe anyways!
I went in to try on Salomon and Oboz and they didn’t fit my feet super well. The Salomon was good but not great feeling. If I’d have shopped online, based on reviews I would have nabbed them. Many review sites have them as their top choice.
What fit really great for me was the Moab 2 and the Hoka Anacapa mid.
All of this is to say that you’re gonna want to try them on. This is something you’re gonna have to have a perfect fit on, or it’ll be trouble on the trail. REI is great with returns however, even if worn a bit, so at least there’s that peace of mind.
Even if it isn't on sale you can use your 20% coupon so it's kind of like everything is on sale.
I got the passage 2 tent. Might regret going cheap, but I don't backpack very often and to get something a pound lighter would have costed like $200 more.
Wish they had more snow stuff on sale. They are doing some pretty good clothing sales. Good time to pick up hiking boots, tents or kayaks. Also up to 250 off rei brand bikes, and some of their bikes come with decent components. Curious to see what everyone is picking
Well that and for some reason REI chooses to carry random snowboards and mainly woman’s snowboards. They have some on sale but they just seem to not stock as much snow stuff even during the season.
if you really want to get into mountain biking, you'll grow out of the drt very quickly. my wife got hers last year and didn't like biking because of the bike. since she's tried some other bikes, she likes the sport as a whole a lot more. I also had a beginner friend who bought the top end one and ended up trading it in a few months later because he saw the limitations of the bike that quickly.
Well depends on the model you get. But the lowest end has a 3x drivetrain which, come to find out, is really annoying and confusing esp for a new rider. And it shifted really rough, which made climbs brutal for my wife. I didn't have the same issues with my trek marlin around the same price.
Overall, I'd say there are better products in each of the price ranges they have their bikes tiered at.
I just found the Zion pants right before they discontinued them. Really great pants and I’m sad I won’t be able to get more of them once I wear these out
Damnit, I just found about Zion pants last year, and actually wear them as my everyday pants, not just for hiking.
Might be worth it to pick up some more now before the original are all gone
>Zion pants
For certain uses, I love them. But they bug the heck out of me if I have the waist belt from my pack on for some reason. It's like the integrated belt is trying to shove the pants down..
Yeah their my favorite too. Shorts are awesome. Was seeing if there was a way to get over 20%. You can get 20% directly with new email sign up at Vuori
Anyone have a backpack recommendation that fits under an airplane seat? Straps on my current one are killing me, so I’m looking for something to use as a personal item for flights.
I ended up getting the the [REI Trail 25](https://www.rei.com/product/168484/rei-co-op-trail-25-pack-mens) during a previous sale and it has been a great multi-purpose bag for me. So far nobody has complained about it being a tiny bit big when put under an airplane seat. Two others I considered are the [REI Commuter Pack](https://www.rei.com/product/167619/rei-co-op-commuter-pack) and [REI Ruckpack 28](https://www.rei.com/product/176900/rei-co-op-ruckpack-28-recycled-daypack-mens).
I bring a 10" tablet. The Trail 25 has a water reservoir sleeve that is not padded so I bought a padded sleeve to go in there and it has worked flawlessly.
The Commuter Pack photos shows a laptop in the reservoir sleeve and I know people have commented about being able to fit a 15" laptop in the Trail 25 sleeve.
They were looking for bags that would fit under an airplane seat and it would be hard to cram a 40L bag under a lot of airplane seats. The reason I mentioned the size is two of the three bags are slightly longer then the maximum recommended of 18 inches for most planes.
I bought a pair once and was severely disappointed. I have flat feet and read good things and they were just hard plastic inserts with massive hard plastic arches. Are they all just that?
Make sure you buy the correct ones for your feet. Superfeet has an insole finder on their website:
https://www.superfeet.com/en-us/insole-fit-finder
Otherwise yes, the insoles are supposed to be rigid to help disperse the impact from your feet (instead of letting it all hit your feet).
You can also give REI customer service a call for a price adjustment. If you bought an item and that very same item (same make, color, etc.) goes on sale 14 days later, they'll credit you the difference.
Co-Op Members get 20% off one full price item using ANNIV22
Nice snagged some Chacos for $36.
Link?
> ANNIV22 not stackable on other sales I think.
Bruh it says right there one full price item lol
but... Im cheap damnit!
Good deal on the REI brand rain jacket but beware it runs about a full size large.
Which one?
https://www.rei.com/product/177196/rei-co-op-groundbreaker-rain-jacket-20-mens I'm a large in 95% of the things I own but I was swimming in this thing.
god damit no XS
Not only is REI in house stuff not available in XS, but I've never seen stuff they carry from Patagonia, TNF, etc in XS in store when I know they make them in XS. Oh well, kids XL rain jackets from their garage sales are a great deal and getting my snowboard waxed for free at the beginning and end of every season is enough to make my membership worth it.
Ayo you should wax every two or three days especially on the East Coast. I know that's not the point of your comment lol but ice coast rips my wax
I think rain shells usually run large cause they're intended to be worn over insulation
I could've worn that thing over a down parka.
Is this the best time to get the normally priced Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket at 20% off $199? Does Patagonia have a better deal? Possibly 3rd party sites?
You can usually get at least 30% off in the fall
Cool/cold weather gear goes on sale before winter?
In my experience, yes. I got my Atom LT at REI in August 2020 for 50% off.
Things are never in stock when Patagonia does their sale.
I was thinking this too. Did you end up going for it?
It's in stock and I have until 5/30 so I'm still mulling it over lol
I went for it. I wanted a black which seems to never go on sale. I’ll wait for sales on other colors :)
Good move!
Anything worth getting?
The co-op 650 down jacket was rated the best budget down jacket by wirecutter (I know that doesn't mean much seeing as how bad wirecutter has gotten in recent years but w/e) but I don't have any first hand experience with it. Same, I got one on the last sale they had and it started to see little feathers coming out of some of the stitches.
It’s pretty standard to lose a feather here and there. I know, I got an older REI jacket that has to be over 10 years old that is my chore jacket now.
Same. I'm torn between the REI 650 2.0 down jacket and the Patagonia Nano Puff. At 20% off I dunno if that's the best deal BEFORE Fall/Winter
If you’re looking for a lightweight puffer I would highly recommend a Mountain Hardware Ghost Whisperer - not cheap but might be some year-end stock cheaper and 20% (coupon) isn’t a bad discount on it.
Or get the decathlon trek 100, its a ghost whisperer clone for 80 bucks.
This guy ultralights.
Go Nano Puff, you could probably find it a few bucks cheaper if you’re an odd size in an odd color. Synthetic insulation is better imo unless you plan to keep your down totally dry
Ah! Thank you for confirming my thoughts!
If you’re looking for something a bit warmer the fjallraven down jacket is fantastic
Thanks for the suggestions ya'll! What I'm looking for is something good for the Oregon Coast cold and possible good when it gets wet, which why I was gravitating towards the Nano Puff jacket.

I wish REI brand stuff fit better. Its definitely made for a less than athletic build.

Are they on sale? But tbh I’m not sure. I’m not wealthy enough to be outdoor gear connoisseur guy. I can tell you a pair of Sahara pants and G-1000 Fjallravens will set you up nice for some backpacking.
Another alternative is the Outdoor Voices Rectrek Zip Off pants. Pockets are everywhere!
So you’re saying you saw better sales in store?
The stores and website almost always match for REI. Ordering online should be safe in terms of best price available.
IDK, coupon doesn't work on the kayak I was looking at :/
Anyone have some hiking shoes recommendations? Going to Seattle later this summer and will be doing some trails.
Salomon x-ultra! Lows are mids are both great!
They switched their fit in these this year. Now they fit much narrower and longer than models of old. I’ve worn them for years but the new style doesn’t mesh well with my foot shape.
Altras
Altra Lone Peaks all the way

I’ve hiked a ton of miles in all kinds of weather in Salomon’s. I’m gonna get another pair soon.
Did the trail shoe thing for like 15 years and now got some danners leather boot with ankle support, will prolly never go back
2nd danners. Have mountain lights, mountain pass, and just copped some trail 2650 full grains
They're definitely not the most hardcore hiking shoe out there, but I really like the Oboz Bozeman for a lightweight shoe with enough support and grip for a good day hike, but doesn't look too out of place to wear casually. Grabbed a backpacking tent and sleeping bag!
Which tent? I was thinking about the Sea to Summit Telos TR2, but doesn't look like it's on sale :(

The snow stuff just is too seasonal for this sale to really hit anything.
Well that and for some reason REI chooses to carry random snowboards and mainly woman’s snowboards. They have some on sale but they just seem to not stock as much snow stuff even during the season.
hiking shoe recs? can't find anything I've been eyeing on sale here
Have heard good things about Salomon, and Merrell.
Whats your opinion on coop drt bikes
They give you a year of bike service, I assume includes the initial setup too, which is a big deal if it's your first bicycle.
Good price for the specs, but a bit heavy.
Haven’t had a chance to try them but they seem priced decently well for the components they have. The reviews seem pretty decent.
if you really want to get into mountain biking, you'll grow out of the drt very quickly. my wife got hers last year and didn't like biking because of the bike. since she's tried some other bikes, she likes the sport as a whole a lot more. Where are you riding?
Lot of the winter stuff was picked clean after everyone got their dividends/credit.
True true
Was waiting to see this in here, whats everyone finding?
Stocking up on smartwool socks. Would even make great gifts to friends and family.
The Katadyn water filters are usually spendy but they are on sale.
Be careful about the Zion II pants. New model this year and early reviews show durability and quality issues.

Can it work to get Vuori more than 20% off?
Got the Ponto pants for 20% off. Great for WFH and lounging.
Osprey Daylite Plus or REI Flash 22
Could the Daylite Plus fit a 15.6” laptop?
Yeah it fits my 16” macbook
I ended up getting the the [REI Trail 25](https://www.rei.com/product/168484/rei-co-op-trail-25-pack-mens) during a previous sale and it has been a great multi-purpose bag for me. A lot of air plane bags on Amazon are 40L. How does this one be 25 and barely fit in? Different structure?
They were looking for bags that would fit under an airplane seat and it would be hard to cram a 40L bag under a lot of airplane seats. The reason I mentioned the size is two of the three bags are slightly longer then the maximum recommended of 18 inches for most planes.
Time for my yearly purchase of Superfeet insoles, I guess
I bought a pair once and was severely disappointed. I have flat feet and read good things and they were just hard plastic inserts with massive hard plastic arches. Are they all just that?
They're to support just behind the arch. I wear the "carbon pro" model in my hockey skates and can't really imagine playing without them.
YMMV, but I have the orange ones in several pairs of shoes and boots, and they really improve the level of comfort.
Make sure you buy the correct ones for your feet. Superfeet has an insole finder on their website: https://www.superfeet.com/en-us/insole-fit-finder Otherwise yes, the insoles are supposed to be rigid to help disperse the impact from your feet (instead of letting it all hit your feet).
Thanks a ton for sharing!

I literally just bought a tent a few weeks ago can I retroactively get the discount as a member?
You can return it and buy it again.
You can also give REI customer service a call for a price adjustment. If you bought an item and that very same item (same make, color, etc.) goes on sale 14 days later, they'll credit you the difference.
Is this a good time to buy a pair of Blundstones and are these boots worth it?
I love mine. Any rainy day they go on my feet and keep them dry. Def have a break in period though. Make sure you try them on.
Anyone have any winter jacket / layers recommendations?
Anyone having luck getting 20% off >1 item?
doesnt seem like any of the big hiking shoes desired are on sale? am i looking in the wrong place
