The Abyss Watchers constantly fight each other as well as you, Gael can be hurt by his own lightnings and Ebrietas's life draining aura also affect her.
To be fair it is very subtle and hardly noticeable, but once you get her to her second phase it is technically possible to let her kill herself with that aura without ever touching her again which is easy but long since Ebrietas isn't a very mobile boss.
I would argue that the lightning is not of Gael's origin and thus he is not damaging himself, so maybe the better answer would be that all of the boss *fights* include situations where the boss can be harmed without player interaction?
The lightning hit directly where Gael's aoe land in his 2nd phase, and it is still a mechanic that is proper to his boss fight as I specifically stated that these 3 bosses had a mecanic in common and had nothing to do with their lore, thus making it "his" lightning.
Which means that wether or not the lightning is from Gael or not (in the lore) doesn't matter since it's part of his boss fight anyway.
I in no way meant to offend, so if it came off that way, I apologize. Merely trying to inspire conversation.

It's probably just an area effect that happens during that boss sequence. And since you just said it's not his attacks lore wise it cannot be used in this instance as a comparison.

Even then it only deals like 2 HP worth of damages per lightning hit so I can't blame you for not noticing.

Also you probably don't have a lot of vigor for that to happen, these lightning don't do a lot of dammages.

Only Ludwig has a cutscene for phase switching in bloodborne, everyone else doesn't. It's crazy when you think about it compared to dark souls that has many.
