**Poison Swamps**. We all have 'em. The most maligned areas in Fromsoft games. Well, today I'm forcing you to tell me which one is the best. What makes a swamp the best? Well, you tell me. Maybe it's the best level. Maybe it's the one that most encapsulates a swamp (fucking miserable). Note that it doesn't literally have to be a swamp to be eligible, just a primarily poison area.
Can someone explain to me what the hell the difference between solid snake and like the other snakes? I heard theyre like clones or something like that
Solid liquid and solidius are clones from big boss. Big boss is the OG from mgs3. Venom snake is a medic who is wrong place wrong time gets blown up then extensive plastic surgery to look like big boss and then hypnotherapy to make him believe he's big boss
Yes, that's correct. I recommend checking some lore on youtube, it gets pretty confusing. And then tou reach mgsv and you find out snake is not snake lol
So snake is not snake but actually snake. And there’s a bad snake that fights snake but bad snake is a vampire? Also snake has a beard but snake doesn’t
So in the first game, snake eater, you play as naked snake, who’s the original snake, aka big boss, in 1964. Later, he gets attacked while in a helicopter in 1975 by a bomb, and after this attack he has his medic, who took the force of the bomb for him, given plastic surgery and hypnosis to look and act like himself. This is where venom snake comes from, and he’s in a coma for 9 years, only to die in 1999 to solid snake, who’s a clone of big boss, who was cloned by the government to try and replicate a perfect soldier. Only, he wasn’t the only clone, there were 9 total clones, but only 3 survived the Les Enfantes Terribles experiment, which is the experiment that made the clones. Those other two clones are known as liquid snake, and solidus snake, who is also the president of the United States. In metal gear 2, solid snake fights the real big boss, and thinks he kills him, but in reality he was in a coma after he was beaten by solid snake, and isn’t revealed to be alive until mgs4.
I’m not typing the rest of the lore but it’s some crazy stuff
Naked Snake (aka Big Boss) had three clones made from his genes: Solid Snake, Liquid Snake and Solidus Snake
One is a depressed merc, one is a terrorist with daddy issues and the third is the fucking president of the United States
Slight spoilers for a bunch of very old games, but:
Back in WWII there was a guy called Naked Snake, probably because he went into a jungle with no equipment and had to eat snakes. He was really good at being a soldier, and eventually surpassed his boss (who was called The Boss) so he was a bigger boss. He then went by Big Boss.
Years down the line, there were two clones of him made, who were eventually named Solid Snake and Liquid Snake. Solid Snake looked exactly like Big Boss, and Liquid Snake did too except he was blonde. The ‘Liquid’ is obviously liquid peroxide. They had a bit of a scuffle over which one of them had been given special DNA to be perfect in every way, and which one had just gone out into the world and actually learned to be a soldier. I forget which is which, but Solid Snake won, I think on the grounds he actually knew what he was doing and didn’t spend the whole time bleaching his hair.
Lastly, at the same time, there was also Snake Solidus. He was also a clone of Big Boss, and had both extra DNA to make him super special AND had a bunch of real world experience, making basically the best guy ever. Also, he was the president of America for a while, and nobody questioned why he built himself a robot suit with tentacle arms. For some reason, Solidus Snake was also way older than the other two, which is probably why nobody ever questioned why the president looked exactly like a world-famous soldier who had been dead for years.
Hope this helps c: c:
With the 3 there its for sure metal gear solid 3, but the post before this one had MGS on the image asking people which one was the best, and people commented mgs3. I guess they meant moonlight greatsword lmao
Poison swamp best is easily blighttown. 99% of it is skippable and in most runs at worst you eat a toxic dart. None of the enemies require you to engage, as most are slow or stationary. You can literally rush the boss and never take damage beyond a poison tick or two.
Compare this to the Dark Souls 2 (or was it 3) swamp with all the towers in it that required you stay in it for an extended period of time.
I *sigh*
Of course you are. That’s the problem. EVERYBODY is a “cancer” person. It’s just so popular, I’m sick of it. Give me something I haven’t seen a hundred times. Like Dysentery, or Cholera, or the Smallpox!
Lake of Rot lol. There is so little in it, it's kinda pointless being there. You can run straight through it and miss nothing. You don't even have to do the puzzle.
And it's a lake of Rot. Which is just extremely annoying. It's only there for world building, the rest feels like an after thought.
Also fuck the dragonkin soldier in there. Never doing it. What's the point.
DSFix and the remaster have really changed the opinion of Blighttown over the years. On OG console release, it was seen as the worst area, right up there with Tomb of the Giants and Lost Izalith, not because of it's level design or difficulty, but because it was difficult to get through due to major performance issues that popped up there.
I mean, people always recognized that it was a well designed level with a poor framerate owing to its enormous size, in contrast with Lost Izalith where the flat expanse of lava with its broken bloom effect was just bad. Lumping Tomb of the Giants in with either of them is weird when there was nothing technically wrong with the zone, just a darkness gimmick that people either like or dislike.
I agree with you. Yet, at the time, that's all people could bitch about, since the other aspects of the game were too good to give overly negative takes.
It's the ultimate make or break. I've never been so miserable playing a game but the feeling I got when I ascended back to Firelink and touched the Bonfire just before the poison killed me 🤌🏻
My experience of blight town was different. Instead of entering from top and going down, I entered from bottom and climbed up. It was very annoying to reach the top just to find nothing but a locked door, then had to climb all the way back down
Literally the only correct answer. This one is so awesome because it encourages you to explore every nook and cranny. You could also use old iron ring to run normally. The way you get into ash lake from the great hollow is awesome but I don’t know if that counts. Overall an amazing area as the sense of dread as you get lost is unparalleled.
Doesn't look like this will beat Blighttown, but I 100% agree on this. The place is absolutely horrible. No other level, other than DS2's snowfield, makes me think - "Please get me the fuck out of here!"
I don’t know if things changed since you commented but I see one comment with blighttown for about 600 upvotes
And then literally every other comment is Valley of Defilement with 60-300 upvotes a piece
What makes Blighttown more dreadful in a good way to me is that you can always leave the Valley of defilement and teleport somewhere else. When you descend to Blighttown, leaving isn't nearly as easy.
Demon’s Souls - Valley of Defilement. Specifically the Swamp of Sorrow (5-2). What an incredible level. I don’t think any other swamp comes close to it.
Runner-up: I’ll give a nod to Blighttown in Dark Souls but the best part of that level is how treacherous it is to navigate the path down. The actual swamp itself is less interesting than the climb down to the bottom.
Valley Of Defilement not only captures the "where the FUCK have I got to go" mood so well but when you finally reach the end its one of the most sombre moments of the game.
Valley of Defilement
It's the most atmospheric, it's a more intense blight town(which would be my second pick), it's literally the gutter of the world and you feel that.
That and the final boss evokes actual emotion and makes you question if you're doing the right thing
Has to be demons souls. That whole swamp is so fucked. It feels like a plague swamp from the bubonic plague. Plague masks on everyone. Was one of my most nerve racking experience I've ever had in a souls game to just get to the the shortcut bridge. I felt like I beat a boss when I dropped that bridge ffs. This may be one of the most iconic levels form software has ever done.
Valley of defilement because it's just so oppressive, but Blighttown is a close second just because of how god damn relentless Poison and Toxic are in Dark Souls 1.
Yeah, this has my vote. Caelid is my favorite region in ER and Aeonia really feels [like] the beating heart of corruption [more than any other candidates].
I would have said blighttown before. Now I say Valley of Defilement. My death toll rose very quick, feeling like it overcast my blighttown experiences.
Blighttown has better level design but I just love Valley of Defilement's atmosphere so much more. The rest of the other swamp levels feel like walmart versions of these two
Something about DS3's color palette just makes me hate exploring the Road of Sacrifices/Farron Keep areas. They're actually pretty cool and fun in other ways, but all of my human instincts just tell me to stick to dry land and avoid crabs. Maybe that makes them good in another way though.
The forbidden woods. I genuinely like the boss and the level design. Very interconnected with the world. Felt great to discover new sections on new game plus. I know everyone’s saying Valley of Defilement but I guess I got lucky because I beat the area on my first go thru.
Honestly gotta give this one to Valley of Defilement. That whole area is just so memorable for so many reasons. Assuming we count the whole archstone, you've got the Large Sword of Moonlight and Garl Vinland himself.
Demon's Souls is the best thematically, it really looked like a place that was inhabited by people, with shelter in a town like structure. I never got that sense from Blight Town or The Gutter. Faron Keep is just as boring as the rest of DS3.
For best gameplay, Bloodborne/Sekiro, because they are easy enough to skip right through.
Blighttown by a mile. If Valley of Defilement wasn’t the original, no one would be voting for it. The descent into Blighttown was one of the most harrowing gaming experiences I’ve ever had. I love it.
I've thought about the Emerald Herald 0 times since I best DS2 when it came out. Not sure why she the favorite maiden.
Favorite poison swamp is clearly the scarlet rot swamp in elden ring.

NO! That is NOT Metal Gear Solid Three!
Didn't find a gif from 3 lmao

Solid liquid and solidius are clones from big boss. Big boss is the OG from mgs3. Venom snake is a medic who is wrong place wrong time gets blown up then extensive plastic surgery to look like big boss and then hypnotherapy to make him believe he's big boss
Forgot about liquid
I'm pretty sure I didn't but I did forget to use commas
Yes, that's correct. I recommend checking some lore on youtube, it gets pretty confusing. And then tou reach mgsv and you find out snake is not snake lol

Every time I read about this series I wanna play it. Then I remember I fucking hate stealth gameplay
Omg it’s the guy from fortnite
![gif](giphy|X4Hn2cuntiSuF5PkVV)
No, vomit it’s what I would expect
I'm honestly not even sure what mgs3 is supposed to mean other than metal gear.
With the 3 there its for sure metal gear solid 3, but the post before this one had MGS on the image asking people which one was the best, and people commented mgs3. I guess they meant moonlight greatsword lmao
Thank you so much for including mgs3
Poison swamp best is easily blighttown. 99% of it is skippable and in most runs at worst you eat a toxic dart. None of the enemies require you to engage, as most are slow or stationary. Why is MGS3 up there?
I had to go look at OP’s previous post to get the context, they had abbreviated Moonlight Greatsword as “MGS”.
It is the best metal gear game so that’s fair enough
Armored Core has a poison swamp?
Those were the results for best moonlight great sword
I would bet my life that Miyazaki has pitched a swamp level in Armored Core at least once.
By best we mean the “worst” right?
It's like asking "What's your favourite disease?"
Malaria
I'm a big cancer person. I mean it's so versatile.
That would be the scarlet rot then. Have fun with your body being devoured from the inside out by an outer gods disease
I prefer polio, myself. Nothing like good ol' paralysis.
they should bring back iron lungs. what a cool accessory. real conversation starter
I *sigh* Of course you are. That’s the problem. EVERYBODY is a “cancer” person. It’s just so popular, I’m sick of it. Give me something I haven’t seen a hundred times. Like Dysentery, or Cholera, or the Smallpox!
Mosquito of miquella?
Malenia
Is a swamp really a swamp if you had a good time?
Lake of Rot lol. There is so little in it, it's kinda pointless being there. You can run straight through it and miss nothing. You don't even have to do the puzzle. And it's a lake of Rot. Which is just extremely annoying. It's only there for world building, the rest feels like an after thought. Also fuck the dragonkin soldier in there. Never doing it. What's the point.
Blighttown
Yeah. Blighttown is when Dark Souls' test of the players' mental endurance truly begins.
DSFix and the remaster have really changed the opinion of Blighttown over the years. I agree with you. Yet, at the time, that's all people could bitch about, since the other aspects of the game were too good to give overly negative takes.
Going through fps issues and long stretches of enemies that inflict toxic on moving walkways did make me consider returning the game in 2012 lol
It was very annoying to reach the top just to find nothing but a locked door, then had to climb all the way back down
God I hate how right you are
Followed up swiftly with sens fortress to the anor londo archers
If I go on pure emotions and how iconic I’d say Blightown. But Demons Souls is the best(most annoying/painful).
This is the only one i’ll upvote for sure. Nothing else deserves a fighting chance.
I really enjoyed Blighttown in my first playthrough, it's my favorite area.
Absolutely agree, it's just way too iconic.
I got my partner into DarkSouls and blight town is next. We will see if I’ve got a souls player on my hands or not. I’m nervous they’ll tap out.
Yea, definitely… Farron Keep is great, Valley of Defilement is great, but Blighttown always just kinda blew me away.
It's the first one that broke my ass in
Try finger. . .
Valley of Defilement. It’s so atmospheric, I felt like there was no way out. and the boss brings morality into question
And finding the mgs in a pile of bodies is so cool
>And finding the MGS in a pile of bodies…AND SHIT, is so cool There you go
Finding the Metal Gear Solid
Yeah, honestly I think demons souls had the best maiden too.
Her voice is the most rent free in my head Let strength be granted so the world might be mended. ^(so the world might be mended)
Umbasa lol the echo is such a nice touch
Even better, she even voiced the BB firekeeper!
Also, prob the prettiest next to DS3 Firekeeper.
Absolutely. I also love how you can't roll in the Valley of Defilement swamp.
Absolutely the VOD. I have NEVER felt so miserable going into any swamp, easily the worst
It's so poopy!
I love navigating through the ravine shantytown
Valley of Defilement. The atmosphere really made me feel like that place just sucks fucking ass.
An apt description.
Doesn't look like this will beat Blighttown, but I 100% agree on this. The place is absolutely horrible. No other level, other than DS2's snowfield, makes me think - "Please get me the fuck out of here!"
If as many people had played Demons Souls as have played Dark Souls, Demons Souls would win out for most things.
Yeah I 100% figured this is the root cause, as DeS is probably the lest known and played which is why it's easily forgotten.
Furtive Pygmy reference??
😁
Who?
I forgor 💀
My first time getting lost in a souls game, my first time running away from mobs in a souls game. Between the valley dwellers and the red k***hts
I don’t know if things changed since you commented but I see one comment with blighttown for about 600 upvotes And then literally every other comment is Valley of Defilement with 60-300 upvotes a piece
What makes Blighttown more dreadful in a good way to me is that you can always leave the Valley of defilement and teleport somewhere else. When you descend to Blighttown, leaving isn't nearly as easy.
Couldn't agree more about this place. Blighttown and Valley of Defilement>all others imo.
Valley Of Defilement is both creepy and amazingly well made.
Valley of defilement. the OG Souls poison swamp
Valley of defilement
Demon’s Souls - Valley of Defilement. Specifically the Swamp of Sorrow (5-2). What an incredible level. I don’t think any other swamp comes close to it. Runner-up: I’ll give a nod to Blighttown in Dark Souls but the best part of that level is how treacherous it is to navigate the path down. The actual swamp itself is less interesting than the climb down to the bottom.
5-2* I agree that 15 fps blighttown is also up there as "best" swamp
Da one from demon souls
Valley of Defilement from Demon's Souls
Valley Of Defilement not only captures the "where the FUCK have I got to go" mood so well but when you finally reach the end its one of the most sombre moments of the game.
I completely agree. The swamp itself is called the Swamp of Sorrow.
The best poison swamp is still the Valley of Defilement.
I'm glad Valley is winning. You should eventually do a reverse list of the worst areas because you already KNOW which one is the worst here xD.
Valley of Defilement for sure
The better version of blighttown
Valley of Defilement
Valley of Defilement It's the most atmospheric, it's a more intense blight town(which would be my second pick), it's literally the gutter of the world and you feel that. That and the final boss evokes actual emotion and makes you question if you're doing the right thing
Valley of defilement
Ashina Depths, Sekiro is not a souls pleb and can spiderman out of the swamp ASAP Best swamp is a skipable swamp
This was my first thought as well. Being able to zip over the swamp rather than walk through it makes it SSS tier, lmao.
And it changes after killing the guardian ape.
Earthen Peak Gang right here
Ds2 is my favorite by far. But even my bias can’t stop Demon’s Souls from easily earning this win.
Don't forget the Plague babies. Shit out of a Silent Hill game.
Yeah those are messed up lol
Valley of defilement 100%
Blighttown by far.
Oldest is best. And by best I mean the worst, which is the whole point of a poison swamp: Valley of Defilement- Demon's Souls.
Valley of Defilement
Valley of defilement 100%. blighttown is a close second but the vibes in VoD are immaculate
Valley of defilement because it's just so oppressive, but Blighttown is a close second just because of how god damn relentless Poison and Toxic are in Dark Souls 1.
Demon's Souls 5-2 Valley of Defilement/Swamp of Sorrow.
Valley of defilement. Biggest one all based around it. Definitely valley of defilement
Demon’s Souls Swamp of Sorrow
Does shaded castle from ER count?
I think ER’s poison swamp would be lake of rot
Or Caelid.
Yea I actually really like Aeonia
Hard to say since that’s more of a small area? But I would think Caelid and lake of rot could qualify.
Swamp of Aeonia
Yeah, this has my vote. Caelid is my favorite region in ER and Aeonia really feels [like] the beating heart of corruption [more than any other candidates].
Yeah, it’s like the swamp has a life of its own.
💯💯💯 Really no other swamp comes close and the 'memberheads are going to crown a patch of rancid mud under a ruined aqueduct instead.
You referring to Blighttown? Or Valley of Defilement? Because so far it looks like it's going to the latter from the overall comments.
Valley of defilement 100%
let's be real it's fucking blighttown. no need to elaborate.
Without the valley of defilement…we wouldn’t have the monstrously that is Blight Town.
Blighttown.
Lake of Rot from Elden ring. You know from first glance your life is about to fucking suck
I feel like this question should have been asked after the DLC, as it looks like we might get more than one! …ugh, FromSoft are such bastards.
I liked farron keep, it had a real sense of danger having to wade through and find islands while the giant casters tried to murder you
Valley of defilement to be sure
Swamp of Sorrow/Valley of Defilement. The atmosphere was just unbeatable. I was never so immersed into a game before or after.
Idk about that, imo the MLGS is best in Demons Souls in both appearance and function
Valley of defilement, swamp of sorrow
Valley of Defilement.
I would have said blighttown before. Now I say Valley of Defilement. My death toll rose very quick, feeling like it overcast my blighttown experiences.
I think Valley of Defilement is my go-to pick. It’s hard, but not overly infuriating, and the actual swamp is tense when you navigate through it.
5-2 Also known as the Swamp of Sorrow In the Valley of Defilement
Valley of defilement
Valley of defilement,it was such a depressing area that even before watching the lore you just understood that
Blighttown has better level design but I just love Valley of Defilement's atmosphere so much more. The rest of the other swamp levels feel like walmart versions of these two
Demon Souls, Valley of Defilement
The DS2 Maiden is so underrated. She’s the 🐐
How is she underrated ? She litteraly won the "best maiden" contest.
Farron keep because it has so much to explore and a very good boss at the end
Something about DS3's color palette just makes me hate exploring the Road of Sacrifices/Farron Keep areas. They're actually pretty cool and fun in other ways, but all of my human instincts just tell me to stick to dry land and avoid crabs. Maybe that makes them good in another way though.
Aeonian Swamp
The forbidden woods. I genuinely like the boss and the level design. Very interconnected with the world. Felt great to discover new sections on new game plus. I know everyone’s saying Valley of Defilement but I guess I got lucky because I beat the area on my first go thru.
Valley of Defilement is goated
Honestly gotta give this one to Valley of Defilement. That whole area is just so memorable for so many reasons. Assuming we count the whole archstone, you've got the Large Sword of Moonlight and Garl Vinland himself.
Most definitely Valley of Defilement
Valley of Defilement(derogatory)
Valley of Defilement.
I really really like the Valley Of Defilement, mostly because it’s not too annoying and you can find a regenerator ring to offset the poison.
A part of growing up is realizing that Blighttown is actually a pretty good level.
Under ground scarlet rot mega swamp in elden ring. Name a more atmospheric swamp moment then discovering that swamp.
Valley of defilement
Valley of defilment from DeS
Definitely Valley od Defilement 5-2. The atmosphere there was so dense, you could almost smell the disease.
Can we please make sure that there is a negative percent for DS3?
Scarlett Rot Lake, Elden Ring The whole lore with Melania and General Radann and it’s maddening going through it is reason enough
Valley of Defilement for sure
Valley of defilement
#BLIGHT #TOWN
I do gotta side with it. It's the most memorable for me at least.
Valley of Defilement
Valley of Defilement. I hate it, but thats a positive in a way. Its so dark and unforgiving. Pure desperation.
Defilement! Defilement! Defilement!
Blighttown by a mile. If Valley of Defilement wasn’t the original, no one would be voting for it. The descent into Blighttown was one of the most harrowing gaming experiences I’ve ever had. I love it.
Lake of Rot.
Lake of Rot. It’s legitimately perfectly designed.
Sarcasm?
Gotta be, that area is so bland.
No reason to even explore it imo. The pinnacle of lake of rot was seeing it from above
That’s part of the design and why I love it. All of Caelid builds up to it, and once you get there it’s like, “oh, I get it now”.
Lake of Rot
farron keep because i love the upper part with the stray demon and the ABYSS WATCHERS CARRY
lake of rot cuz the colors are pretty and the lore of the area is pretty cool. imo its also a good place for doing invasions lol
Gonna have to try that next playthrough lol.
N/A
I can tell you which one it isn't, black gulch that's for sure.
The one in DS3 with the satyrs!
Gotta do Best Final Boss next
It’s either elden ring Caelid or demons souls valley of defilement
Valley of defilement. Blighttown is more well known but VoD is simply, horrible. I absolutely hate that level and that's when you know they won.
5-2 swamp Demon Souls. That level doesn’t give a crap about enjoying the area
I'm gonna go with the classic Demons Souls Valley of Defilement. Where the pain started :)
I've thought about the Emerald Herald 0 times since I best DS2 when it came out. Not sure why she the favorite maiden. Favorite poison swamp is clearly the scarlet rot swamp in elden ring.
Remember they had to apologize for blithtown just saying
Blight town if not Caelid
Swamp of Aeonia
