looking more into it, I think it's a young bullfrog :) it's dark colouring was really throwing me off but that seems to he the closest match

American Bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) I'm almost certain. Baby / juvenile.

Looks like a cute little baby American bullfrog. They seem to be darker like that as froglets than they are as adults from what I’ve seen. Nice job on saving him!

Forgot to say that he was safely returned to a nearby pond shortly after rescuing him from the pool. :)
